Populations ofTococa occidentalis (Melastomataceae) and the inhabiting ants (Myrmelachista sp.) were observed for more than eight months in the Peruvian Amazon (Sira mountains). They represent a complex coevolutionary system: the plants offer shelter (leaf domatia, hollow stems) and food (leaf glands), whereas the ants kill all surrounding plants, including large trees up to 10 m, by chemical weapons. Experiments with exposed plants revealed a highly specialized way to attack meristematic tissue and leaf nervature, which leads to a quick decay of the plant individuals. The clearing of the vegetation by the ants allows theTococa population to expand mostly by vegetative shoots to large monocultures (up to 30 m in diameter) free from any other plant species. Artificially introduced plant individuals, from differentT. occidentalis populations, are regarded as a foreign species by the ants.The succession of such aTococa-Myrmelachista system begins with one or a few founder plants on a light place in the midst of the vegetation.Myrmelachista soon inhabits their host plants which otherwise would not survive and begin to clear the place from all foreign plant species.Tococa expands quickly, forming circle shaped populations. Distantly situated canopy trees shade theTococa population after a number of years and cause their decay. The whole place appears contaminated for years and no other plant can establish itself. In the last five years, as HAART has become standard therapy in HIV seropositive or AIDS patients, changes have been noted in the numbers and types of opportunistic fungal infections in these cohorts of patients. Particularly, oropharyngeal candidiasis have become rare in HIV infected patients since the introduction of new anti-HIV drugs of the protease inhibitors type. At the Immunology Institute of the Universidad Central de Venezuela the most frequent protease inhibitors (PIs) used for the treatment of these patients have been: Nelfinavir (ViraceptTM, Roche),Indinavir (Crixivan® Merck),Ritonavir (Norvir®, Abbott),Saquinavir (Fortovase®, Roche).Recently, we observed that recurrent candidiasis was less frequent and no Candidacould be isolated in our patients. A direct relation to the PIs was suspected. In order to assess the in vitro antifungal activity of the afore mentioned protease inhibitors on Candida sp., we used both the well diffusion test and the NCCLS broth microdilution test to assay 100 Candida sp. isolates from HIV seropositive or AIDS patients with syntomatic oropharyngeal Candida infection. In general, the data obtained with the well diffusion test were in agreement with those obtained by the broth microdilution test. All 100 isolates were susceptible to Saquinavir and 32 were susceptible to Indinavir using the NCCLS microdilution test,while 97 were susceptible to Saquinavir and 52 to Indinavir by the well diffusion test. From 17 C. albicans resistant to fluconazole, all were susceptible to Saquinavir by the NCCLS micro method and 16 by the well diffusion test. Fungi of the genus Aspergillus can infect all tissues and organs, causing invasive mycosis (aspergillosis). This disease can be fatal, especially in immunocompromised patients. Microbiological monitoring of these infectious agents is obligatory in modern medical facilities. Mobile elements can be used as markers to identify the Aspergillus species and strains found indoors as well as to diagnose aspergillosis. Genomic sequences of two Aspergillus species, A. fumigatus and A. nidulans, were analyzed in silico in order to detect LTR retrotransposons. These species were found to considerably differ in the composition of retrotransposon families. One of the families, present in both Aspergillus species, was phylogenetically quite different from all known fungal retrotransposons. The majority of its elements were damaged copies. Nevertheless, allegedly undamaged LTR retrotransposon copies were described that contained intact ORFs and might be active. 相似文献

Administration of psychostimulants modulates mRNA of several regulators of guanine nucleotide-binding protein signaling (RGSs) proteins in the brain. In the present study, the regulation of amphetamine-induced decrease of RGS4 expression in the rat forebrain was evaluated. RGS4 mRNA was reduced by amphetamine in an inverse, dose-dependent manner. The lowest dose (2.5 mg/kg) decreased RGS4 mRNA in caudate putamen for up to 6 h after injection whereas the decrease in several frontal cortical areas was detected at 3 h only. Analysis of RGS4 immunoreactivity by western blotting revealed a decrease 3 h after amphetamine solely in the caudate putamen. Systemic administration of D(1) (SCH23390) or D(2) (eticlopride) receptor antagonists blocked amphetamine-induced locomotion but amphetamine augmented both the SCH23390-induced increase and the eticlopride-induced decrease in RGS4 mRNA in the caudate putamen. Further, the down-regulation of RGS4 immunoreactivity by eticlopride was robust whereas the effect of SCH23390 was blunted as compared with its effect on mRNA. These data suggest that, by decreasing RGS4 expression in the caudate putamen via D(1) receptors, acute amphetamine could disinhibit RGS4-sensitive guanine nucleotide-binding protein alpha-subunit i- and/or q-coupled signaling pathways and favor mechanisms that counterbalance D(1) receptor stimulation. 相似文献

Two field experiments were conducted in Hawaii to determine the responses of lepidopteran pests and their associated natural enemies to broccoli (Brassica oleracea), grown in monoculture or interplanted with chili pepper (Capsicum annuum), or yellow sweetclover (YSC) (Melilotus officinalis). The population responses of Artogeia rapae and Trichoplusia ni to habitat types were not consistent during the field trials. Additionally, their reactions to habitat diversification differed according to non-host plant species. For example, Trichoplusia ni densities were significantly lower in the broccoli–YSC habitat contrasted with the broccoli–pepper habitat on most sampling dates. Similarly, the proportion of plants damaged by Hellula undalis was significantly lower in the broccoli–YSC habitat contrasted with broccoli–pepper habitat. Findings from the study, suggest that biological control agents (e.g., spiders, parasitoids, and␣entomopathogens) are the most significant factors influencing the abundance of A.␣rapae in habitat type and that these agents inflict greater mortality on A. rapae in diculture than monoculture habitats. 相似文献

Summary We tested the adaptive significance of flowering synchrony by means of a quantitative analysis of selection and by flowering induction experiments with the deciduous shrubErythroxylum havanense. Temporal schedules of flower and fruit production were determined for a local population (in three sites) in a Mexican seasonal forest for 2 years (1987–1988). The consequences of natural variation in flowering time (flowering initiation day) on maternal reproductive success (fecundity) were evaluated. We observed high levels of inter- and intraindividual flowering synchrony in 1987, but not in 1988 and this contrast was related to differences in rainfall patterns between the two years. A significant proportion (15.4%) of the phenotypic variation in flowering initiation day was accounted for by environmental variance. The expression of phenotypic variance of flowering time and, consequently, the opportunity for selection to act, are controlled by annual variation in rainfall. Despite the between-year difference in flowering synchrony, we detected a relatively intense directional selection on flowering initiation day in both years, but selection coefficients were of opposite sign (standardized directional gradients were –0.326 and 0.333 for 1987 and 1988, respectively). For both years there was a significant relationship between individual relative fitness and the number of neighbouring flowering plants in a given day, suggesting positive frequency-dependent selection. 相似文献

Summary The influence of the gaseous composition of the atmosphere inside culturing vessels on somatic embryogenesis and on adventitious
root formation was investigated in the quince clone (Cydonia ablonga Mill.) BA29. Leaves taken from in vitro-grown shoots were cultured in glass Petri dishes and exposed to ventilation with atmospheric air (flow rate 25 ml min−1) for 0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 d. Twenty days of ventilation reduced the frequency of embryogenic leaves and a further decrease
was observed after 40d of treatment. Conversely, adventitious root formation in the ventilated dishes was never different
from the untreated cultures. In a second test, leaves were incubated in atmospheres containing different levels of oxygen
(0, 5.0, 10.0, and 21.0%) or carbon dioxide (0, 0.04, 0.15, 1.5, and 3.0%). Anoxia conditions almost completely inhibited
somatic embryo and adventitious root formation, but without compromising callus formation and explant viability. In contrast,
embryo and root regeneration occurred even in totally CO2-free atmosphere. Oxygen seemed to influence somatic embryogenesis according to a quadratic response; a similar relationship
was also observed for root regeneration. Instead, no clear trend could be inferred between embryo or root regeneration and
CO2 levels. Furthermore, in dishes flushed with gas mixtures containing oxygen or carbon dioxide somatic embryo formation was
almost always lower than in confined dishes. A different result was observed for root regeneration, since the number of roots
was never lower than in the control and increased appreciably with 3.0% CO2. These results demonstrate that atmosphere composition of the culture head-space can influence somatic embryogenesis in quince.
The finding that both vessel ventilation and atmosphere replacement with different gas mixtures reduced somatic embryo formation
suggests that gaseous compounds, different from O2 an CO2, present in the gaseous environment may promote embryogenesis in this species. 相似文献
