Catalysis of the disproportionation of superoxide by metalloporphyrins.

The efficiencies of several metalloporphyrin complexes at catalyzing the disproportionation of superoxide have been determined at pH 10 in both carbonate and borate buffer systems. Catalytic rate constants were obtained for the iron(III) and cobalt(III) derivatives of tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridyl) porphine, for tetraphenylporphinesulfonatoferrate(III) and for hemin. In addition, the effects of added bovine serum albumin and imidazole were studied. The order of catalytic efficiency is FeTMpyP greater than FeTMpyP(Im)2 greater than FeTPPS(Im)2 approximately FeTPPS approximately FeTPPS.BSA approximately Fe(EDTA) greater than or approximately CoTMpyP greater than hemin(Im)2 greater than or approximately hemin.     

Entomophthora apiculata (Thaxter) Gustafs. (Zygomycetes,Entomophthorales) as a pathogen of calypterate flies in Nigeria

Entomophthora apiculata (Thaxter) Gustafs. was isolated from the following naturally-infected dipterans: Musca domestica L. (s.l.) (Muscidae); Hemipyrellia fernandica Macquart and Chrysomya chloropyga f. putoria Weidemann (Calliphoridae). This fungus produced rhizoids in vivo but not in vitro. Although it was readily cultured in vitro, experimental infection could not be achieved consistently — which calls for intensive research into the biology of this and other Entomophthora species.     

Effect of methallibure (ICI 33,828) on the pituitary-gonad and the pituitary-thyroid axes of the Indian garden lizard,Calotes versicolor (Daudin)

Summary The effect of methallibure (ICI 33,828) on the pituitary-gonad and the pituitary-thyroid axes of the Indian garden lizard, Calotes versicolor was studied. Following administration of methallibure B₂ (FSH) and B₃ (ICSH) cells of the pars distalis exhibited significant alterations with concomitant changes in the seminiferous tubules, and in the interstitial cells and epididymis respectively. B₁ (TSH) cells exhibited conspicuous hypertrophy and degranulation which was reflected in dramatic changes in thyroid morphology. The caudally localized acidophilic A₁ (PRL) cells also showed hypertrophy, hyperplasia and intense granulation. The rostrally located A₂ (STH) acidophils and the B₄ (ACTH) cells were unaffected by the treatment. The possible mode of action of this drug is discussed in the light of available literature.Supported by a grant from the University Grants Commission of India. Marginal bundles of axoplasmic microtubules at nodes of Ranvier within muscle

Summary Using a special albumin technique, nodes of Ranvier have been examined within frog skeletal muscle, sciatic nerve and rat and frog cerebrum. Initial segments have been examined in cerebrum of frog and rat. Microtubules usually run longitudinally through these regions, but within the bare area of the intramuscular node of Ranvier, annular or helical bundles of microtubules run in a marginal band at right angles to the more centrally placed longitudinal microtubules. These nodal bare areas show a pronounced convexity and it is suggested that the annular microtubules serve to maintain this convexity during muscle contraction.Dr. Westrum is an affiliate of the CDMRC, University of Washington and a recipient of a Wellcome Trust (U.K.) Burroughs Wellcome Fund (U.SA.) Ultrastructural reactions of spinal ganglia to tri-ortho-cresyl-phosphate: Effects of neurotoxicity

Summary The ultrastructure of neurons in spinal ganglia of the domestic fowl poisoned with tri-ortho-cresyl-phosphate (TOCP) shows characteristic changes. The light neurons react to TOCP by a marked increase in the number of neurofilaments. These neurons also contain mitochondria in various degenerative stages. Several of the altered mitochondria show an increasing osmiophilia. Some of the darker neurons display a hypertrophy of the endoplasmic reticulum or a relative increase of neurofilaments. The mitochondria in some of these cells show early stages of degeneration. These changes appear 13 days after TOCP ingestion.     

Parameter identification of the calvin photosynthesis cycle

Summary This article is concerned with the determination of kinetic parameters of the Calvin photosynthesis cycle which is described by seventeen nonlinear ordinary differential equations. It is shown that the task requires dynamic data for several sets of initial conditions. The numerical technique is based upon an algorithm for non-linear optimization and Gear's numerical integration scheme for stiff systems of differential equations. The sensitivity of the parameters to noise in the data is tested with a method adapted from Rosenbrook and Storey. A preliminary set of parameters has been obtained from a preliminary set of experimental data. The numerical methods are then tested with synthetic data derived from these parameters. The mathematical model and the results obtained in the simulation are used as an aid in designing new experiments.     

The N protein of bacteriophage lambda, defined by its DNA sequence, is highly basic.

Nucleotide sequence has been determined for the restriction fragments and cloned DNA from the pL-N-tL1 region of bacteriophage lambda. A unique reading frame for the N gene is defined by the absence of natural nonsense codons and by the presence of seven nonsense codons generated by mutations in N. This reading frame is initiated at two alternative ATG codons, the second of which is probably the in vivo translation start. Reading is stopped at a single TAG codon. The protein coded is therefore 133 or, more probably, 107 amino acids long, rich in lysine, arginine and proline.     

The genusGeitleria (Cyanophyceae orCyanobacteria): Distribution ofG. calcarea andG. floridana n. sp.

The calcifying cave inhabitant atmophytic blue-green algaGeitleria calcarea is reported from new localities in Florida and in the Cook Islands.—G. floridana n. sp., is described from caves in Florida. The calcified sheath has the shape of a quadratic prism and is built of crystalline acicular subunits about 0.1 µm in diameter. The subunits mostly form a rhombic lattice pattern but in some cases, they are not distinguishable and then the surface of the sheath is smooth.This paper is dedicated with gratitude to my former teacher, Prof. Dr.Lothar Geitler, for his 80th birthday.
