Increases in nitrogen (N) deposition and variation in precipitation have been occurring in temperate deserts; however, little information is available regarding plant phenological responses to environmental cues and their relationships with plant growth pattern in desert ecosystems. In this study, plant phenology and growth of six annuals in response to N and water addition were monitored throughout two consecutive growing seasons in 2011 and 2012 in a temperate desert in northwestern China. The effects of N and water addition on reproductive phenology differed among plant species. N and water addition consistently advanced the flowering onset time and fruiting time of four spring ephemerals; however, their effects on two spring‐summer annuals were inconsistent, with advances being noted in one species and delays in another. N and water addition alone increased plant height, relative growth rate, leaf number, flower number, and individual biomass, while their combinative effects on plant growth and reproductive phenology were dependent on species. Multiple regression analysis showed that flowering onset time was negatively correlated with relative growth rate of two species, and negatively correlated with maximum plant height of the other four species. Our study demonstrates that phenological responses to increasing precipitation and N deposition varied in annuals with different life histories, whereby the effects of climate change on plant growth rate were related to reproductive phenology. Desert annuals that were able to accelerate growth rate under increasing soil resource availability tended to advance their flowering onset time to escape drought later in the growing season. This study promotes our understanding of the responses of temperate desert annuals to increasing precipitation and N deposition in this desert.  相似文献

The effect of the canopy on leaf decomposition of beech (t Fagus sylvatica) and melojo oak (t Quercus pyrenaica) was studied during a period of 660 days in a mountain forest of central Spain; response of leaves to leaching was also studied to determine the effects of rainfall after leaf fall. Beech leaves lost 5.8% of their weight by leaching, whereas melojo oak leaves lost 13%. Under both types of canopy, beech leaves showed almost no difference in their decomposition patterns, with decay constants of 0.31 and 0.32 respectively. Melojo oak leaves showed quite a different behaviour under both canopies; decay constant was 0.47 under t Quercus pyrenaica and 0.77 under beech canopy. Total immobilization of nitrogen was less in the melojo oak forest. Effects of summer dryness were sharper in the melojo oak forest, where decomposition stopped during the summer. This delay in the decomposition might have been due to the lower canopy density in the melojo oak forest. The decomposition patterns of the leaves of both species, under the canopy of the other species, suggests what might happen in mixed stands. Thus, the presence of melojo oaks in beech forest would increase decay and decrease nitrogen immobilization. The presence of beech trees in melojo oak forests would improve microclimatic conditions and increase decay, whereas beech litter on the soil would immobilizate more nitrogen.  相似文献

The argument that an optimal age at first reproduction evolveswhere the benefits of reproduction outweigh the costs impliesthat where conditions change, age at first reproduction shouldalso change. We studied six captive populations of fallow deer(Dama dama) that differed in the age structure of males, maledensity, and sex ratio. We examined responses of males to changesin competition by simulating the presence of additional malesby providing visual, olfactory, and auditory stimuli. Our resultssuggest that dominance rank was the most important factor indetermining the level of reproductive behaviors exhibited. Theparticipation in reproduction increased with dominance status,and this association held for males that are usually sociallyimmature (3-5 years old). Hence, age apart from dominance wasrelatively unimportant in affecting the reproductive behavior.Male density was positively correlated with the time spent walkingand standing The female-to-male ratio was positively relatedto male-female interactions, but negatively related to male-maleinteractions. In response to the simulations, males older than3 years increased the rate of reproductive behaviors, but youngermales did not change or decreased the rate. We conclude thatonly males up to 3 years of age refrained from reproductionunder competition by mature males. However, past 3 years ofage, investment in reproduction is a function of dominance ratherthan a function bf age. This implies that 4- and 5-year-oldmales do not seems to defer reproduction until socially maturebut that their participation is a correlate of the achievabledominance rank.  相似文献

为探明微灌与播前深松耕作对夏玉米根际土壤酶活性和产量的影响,以大田夏玉米为研究对象,设计微灌灌溉方式(地表滴灌、地下滴灌和微润灌)、灌水量(分别控制土壤含水量下限为田间持水率的50%、65%和80%)和深松深度(20、40、60 cm)3因素、3水平正交田间试验.结果表明: 夏玉米全生育期内,土壤过氧化氢酶和脲酶活性均呈先增加后减小趋势,磷酸酶活性则呈先减小后增加趋势.地下滴灌0~80 cm生育期平均土壤含水率比地表滴灌和微润灌高6.3%和1.8%,且显著提高土壤脲酶活性、夏玉米根系体积和产量;随着灌水量的增加,土壤磷酸酶活性呈先减小后增加趋势,脲酶活性和产量均呈先增加后减小趋势,生育期平均土壤含水率与根系体积均呈增加趋势;深松40 cm比20 cm的产量和根系体积增加量大于深松60 cm比40 cm的增加量,深松40 cm土壤酶活性较高.从提高水资源、氮肥利用率及作物产量角度考虑,该地区夏玉米种植的最优组合应为地下滴灌、灌水下限为田间持水率的65%与播前深松40 cm.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the influence of cropping variables on nitrogen dynamics in a soil amended with green manure. Surface soil from various long-term spring wheat rotations was amended with15N-labelled legume green manure (Lathyrus tingitanus) and subsequently cropped (canola [Brassica napus] and spring wheat [Triticum aestivum]) or incubated without a crop for 56 days in a greenhouse. Nitrogen mineralization from both the indigenous soil N and from green manure was suppressed in cropped soil. Net N mineralization in the uncropped and cropped treatments averaged 73 and 43 mg kg−1, respectively. This difference was attributed, in part, to enhanced biological immobilization in the rhizosphere. Previous cropping practices also had significant effect on N mineralization, largely by their influence on indigenous organic matter quality. These observations suggest that short-term N mineralization is favored by fallowing soil after green manure application whereas N retention in organic matter is favored by immediate cropping. Summer mortality is a phenomenon severely affecting the aquaculture production of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). Although its causal factors are complex, resistance to mortality has been described as a highly heritable trait, and several pathogens including the virus Ostreid Herpes virus type 1 (OsHV‐1) have been associated with this phenomenon. A QTL analysis for survival of summer mortality and OsHV‐1 load, estimated using real‐time PCR, was performed using five F2 full‐sib families resulting from a divergent selection experiment for resistance to summer mortality. A consensus linkage map was built using 29 SNPs and 51 microsatellite markers. Five significant QTL were identified and assigned to linkage groups V, VI, VII and IX. Analysis of single full‐sib families revealed differential QTL segregation between families. QTL for the two‐recorded traits presented very similar locations, highlighting the interest of further study of their respective genetic controls. These QTL show substantial genetic variation in resistance to summer mortality, and present new opportunities for selection for resistance to OsHV‐1.  相似文献

  1. White‐nose syndrome (WNS) has caused the death of millions of bats, but the impacts have been more difficult to identify in western North America. Understanding how WNS, or other threats, impacts western bats may require monitoring other roosts, such as maternity roosts and night roosts, where bats aggregate in large numbers.
  2. Little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) are experiencing some of the greatest declines from WNS. Estimating survival and understanding population dynamics can provide valuable data for assessing population declines and informing conservation efforts.
  3. We conducted a 5‐year mark–recapture study of two M. lucifugus roosts in Colorado. We used the robust design model to estimate apparent survival, fidelity, and abundance to understand population dynamics, and environmental covariates to understand how summer and winter weather conditions impact adult female survival. We compared the fidelity and capture probability of M. lucifugus between colonies to understand how bats use such roosts.
  4. Overwinter survival increased with the number of days with temperatures below freezing (β > 0.100, SE = 0.003) and decreased with the number of days with snow cover (β < −0.40, SE < 0.13). Adult female fidelity was higher at one maternity roost than the other. Overwinter and oversummer adult female survival was high (>0.90), and based on survival estimates and fungal‐swabbing results, we believe these populations have yet to experience WNS.
  5. Recapture of M. lucifugus using antennas that continuously read passive integrated transponder tags allows rigorous estimation of bat population parameters that can elucidate trends in abundance and changes in survival. Monitoring populations at summer roosts can provide unique population ecology data that monitoring hibernacula alone may not. Because few adult males are captured at maternity colonies, and juvenile males have low fidelity, additional effort should focus on understanding male M. lucifugus population dynamics.

The effect of crop rotation of native vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was studied. Finger millet was grown as the first season crop in 15 plots. In the second season a mycorhizal host (cowpea) and a non-mycorrhizal host (mustard) were grown in 5 plots each, and the remaining 5 plots were left fallow. In the third season cowpea was grown in all the plots. Leaving the land fallow reduced the mycorrhizal propagules by 40% while growing a non-mycorrhizal host reduced it by 13%. Cowpea grown in the third season coincided with a slow build up of mycorrhizal propagules in soil. There was a slow build up of mycorrhizal propagules late in the season irrespective of the treatment in the preceding season.  相似文献

【目的】在无法实现洁净环境的古建筑内,文物易遭受霉菌的破坏,尤其是在闷热的夏季。探明空气中真菌的种类对文物、游客的安全具有重要意义。【方法】采用自然沉降法与撞击法对夏季养心殿正殿内代表性的6个取样位置的气生真菌进行培养并进行ITS1 rDNA序列分析。【结果】利用自然沉降法测得气生真菌22种,以枝孢属(Cladosporium)、曲霉属(Aspergillus)和青霉属(Penicillium)为优势类群,在2个位置(佛堂二层与西暖阁)空气真菌污染超标;而撞击法测得100余种,腐生营养型真菌比例较高,优势类群为链格孢属(Alternaria)、Cladosporium、木霉属 (Trichoderma)、根霉属(Rhizopus)、AspergillusPenicillium,所有6个位置均超标。通过对环境因子与真菌多样性的相关性分析发现,养心殿内真菌丰度与温度、湿度及悬浮颗粒物有着密切关系。在相对湿度较低的6月,温度对丰度影响较大;高湿度时,悬浮颗粒物与湿度对真菌丰度影响更大。丝状真菌的丰度与小粒径悬浮颗粒物、相对湿度存在显著正相关,而空气中的酵母菌与温度相关性更高。【结论】本研究对养心殿正殿空气中真菌的种属进行了鉴定,并分析了与环境因子的相关性,为预防、开放展览以及修缮提供了科学依据。  相似文献
