When Ectothiorhodospira shaposhnikovii VKM B-1525 was used for desuphurization of biogas in the laboratory and in a pilot plant, there was complete oxidation of H2S, the main product being elemental sulphur. Radioactive zinc was used to study the effect of a binary parenteral nutrient solution, composed of amino acids and glucose, on zinc uptake by fibroblasts. The influence of addition of taurine, l-glutamine and of the increase in l-histidine content of the admixture was assessed. The pure mixture was highly toxic for cells and so it was diluted 1/5 in tyrode buffer with 2% albumin. As compared with cells incubated in the buffer containing albumin, zinc absorption was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the presence of the amino acids of the mixture. Amino acids thus increased bioavailability by displacing zinc bound to albumin. When the histidine concentration in the nutrient medium (4.2 mm) was doubled, inhibition was noted after 30 min of incubation and zinc uptake thereafter remained comparable to that in histidine-free medium. The addition of glutamine (4.2 mm), usually not present in binary mixtures, resulted in significant differences as compared with glutamine-free control medium. Taurine (0.8 mm), led to a constant increase in zinc uptake by fibroblasts as compared with that obtained with taurine-free mixture. The aim of the study was to verify whether the infusion of a lipid emulsion causes a rise in vascular pressure related to an imbalance in the production of vasoconstricting and vasodilatating eicosanoids. Segments of umbilical veins were perfused with and without 1.5 μM indomethacin (cyclooxygenase inhibitor) in solutions differing only in their lipid content (control vs. lipid). The lipid-induced higher pressure (p < 0.05) was associated with an inhibition (p < 0.05) in the output of the vasodilatator PGI2, and an increase (p < 0.01) in the production of the vasoconstrictor PGF2. Indomethacin abolished differences in pressure, but produced a rise (p < 0.01) in vascular tone of both the control and lipid-containing solutions by inhibiting PGI2 synthesis. Prostacyclin was the only eicosanoid significantly correlated (p < 0.01) to vascular tone. The lipid emulsion was therefore linked to the inhibition of the conversion of PGH2 to PGI2. The ensuing greater PGH2 availability would result in vivo, in the increased synthesis of vasoconstricting eicosanoids. The lipid-containing solution produced vasoactive responses similar to those reported with tert-butyl hydroperoxide, suggesting that hydroperoxides contaminating commonly used lipid emulsions could be causing a prostanoid-dependent vasoconstricton. 相似文献

The severity of a root rot disease of cereals, caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn AG8, was inversely correlated to the Zn status of plants in field studies in 1989 and 1990. In 1989, a preliminary survey was conducted in a farmer's field in South Australia where Zn deficiency and disease were both widespread. Zn concentration in Spear wheat plants at the 3-leaf to early tillering stage was negatively correlated with severity of the disease. For the elevent elements analysed, a correlation matrix showed that Zn had the highest, and only significant (R2=0.52**) association with disease. The effect of Zn applications and their residual value on disease severity was further studied in a long-term field experiment in 1989 and 1990 to which Zn had been applied in 1986. There was a decrease in the area of Rhizoctonia bare patch as Zn rate was increased, a result consistent with the field survey results; the recommended rate of 2.5 kg Zn ha–1 reduced the area affected by bare patch from 42% to 21% of the total crop area compared with no Zn application, overcame Zn deficiency and increased grain yield from 1.1 to 2.8 t ha–1. In 1990, fresh Zn application treatments were applied to trial plots designed for this purpose, in order to compare the response with the older Zn treatments applied in 1986. The areas of bare patch in the older Zn treatments were approximately 5% greater than those in the fresh Zn treatments. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that Zn deficient plants are more susceptible to root rot caused by R. solani. Testing this hypothesis is the subject of a companion paper. 相似文献

The water fern Azolla pinnata R. Br. was fumigated for 1 week with either 25, 50 or 100 nl 1−1 SO2 . The symbiosis of Azolla with Anabaena azollae (spp.) was severely damaged by atmospheric SO2 even at concentrations as low as 25 nl 1−1 , with significant reductions in growth, reduction of C2 H2 , NH3 assimilation, protein synthesis, and heterocyst development. These disturbances appear to be mainly responsible for the extreme sensitivity of this fern to atmospheric SO2 . Changes in violaxanthin/antheraxanthin and epoxy-lutein/lutein ratios also indicate that free radical products are induced by atmospheric SO2 . These results suggest that the Azolla-Anabaena symbiotic system is a very responsive and reliable lower plant model to study the detailed effects of total sulphur deposition upon the balances between various important plant metabolic processes. 相似文献

Minimizing the effect of mineral nitrogen on biological nitrogen fixation in common bean by increasing nutrient levels 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Although common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) has good potential for N2 fixation, some additional N provided through fertilizer usually is required for a maximum yield. In this study the suppressive effect of N on nodulation and N2 fixation was evaluated in an unfertile soil under greenhouse conditions with different levels of soil fertility (low=no P, K and S additions; medium = 50, 63 and 10 mg kg–1 soil and high = 200, 256 and 40 mg kg–1 soil, respectively) and combined with 5, 15, 60 and 120 mg N kg–1 soil of 15N-labelled urea. The overall average nodule number and weight increased under high fertility levels. At low N applications, nitrogen had a synergistic effect on N2 fixation, by stimulating nodule formation, nitrogenase activity and plant growth. At high fertility and at the highest N rate (120 mg kg–1 soil), the stimulatory effect of N fertilizer on N2 fixation was still observed, increasing the amounts of N2 fixed from 88 up to 375 mg N plant–1. These results indicate that a suitable balance of soil nutrients is essential to obtain high N2 fixation rates and yield in common beans. 相似文献

Growth inhibition of plants suffering from Al toxicity is generally accompanied by impaired root development which can be quantitatively described by reduced specific root length (m g-1 dry root). In addition, the uptake of nutrients such as Mg and Ca is inhibited. Increased supply of either Mg or Ca can significantly diminish the negative effect of Al on root development and improve the Mg or Ca nutrition of the plants. The positive effect of Ca is well established but the effect of Mg has been observed in only a few plan species. Therefore, the effects of increasing Mg and Ca supply on Al toxicity in plants of seven monocots and eight dicots have been now examined in nutrient solution experiments. In general, Mg appears to be more effective than Ca in alleviating Al toxicity with the monocots, whereas the reverse is true for the dicots. Increased concentrations of Mg and Ca in solution seem to protect the plants against Al toxicity by improving the Mg or Ca nutrition and by alleviating the toxic effect of Al on root development. 相似文献

Incorporating these genes into the maize genome increased accumulation of several mineral nutrients (including Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) in some of the experimental lines studied. The physiological basis for this increase of mineral nutrients in the kernels is discussed. The effect of the Mal gene on the kernel amino acid composition and protein quality was also examined. Abstract Incorporation of [ methyl -3 H]thymidine into bacterial DNA was determined for a range of axenic anaerobic bacterial cultures: fermentative heterotrophs, sulphate-reducing bacteria, purple sulphur bacteria, acetogens and methanogens. Anaerobically growing Bacillus sp. and the obligate aerobe Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were also investigated. Actively growing cultures of sulphate-reducing bacteria belonging to the genera Desulfovibrio, Desulfotomaculum, Desulfobacter, Desulfobotulus and Desulfobulbus , purple sulphur bacteria ( Chromatium vinosum OP2 and Thiocapsa roseopersicina OP1), methanogens ( Methanococcus GS16 and Methanosarcina barkeri ) and an acetogen ( Acetobacterium woodii ) did not incorporate [ methyl -3 H]thymidine into DNA. The only obligate anaerobes in which thymidine incorporation into DNA could be unequivocally demonstrated were members of the genus Clostridium . Anaerobically growing Bacillus sp. also incorporated thymidine. These data demonstrate that pure culture representatives of major groups of anaerobic bacteria involved in the terminal oxidation of organic carbon and anoxygenic phototrophs within sediments are unable to incorporate [ methyl -3 H]thymidine into DNA, although some obligate and facultative anaerobes can. Variability in thymidine incorporation amongst pure culture isolates indicates that unless existing techniques can be calibrated to take this into consideration then productivity estimates in both aerobic and anaerobic environments may be greatly underestimated using the [ methyl -3 H]thymidine technique. 相似文献

Arnica montana, one of the character species of the replacement plant communityViolion caninae on sandy acid humic podzol, is declining in the Netherlands since 1950. Locally, it is even extinct.This process of decline may be attributed to (i) autonomic succession; (ii) increased rate of acidification of the soil and/or (iii) change in competitive relations amongArnica and more productive plant species, such as the successive dominantDeschampsia flexuosa. This paper examines the last two hypothesized factors, supposedly being regulated by atmospheric input of N-input, by (a) describing the habitat characteristics of a seemingly still healthy individual-rich population ofArnica and (b) growingArnica andDeschampsia in mixed humic podzol soil (mainly A1 horizon) fertilized with variously-composed nutrient solutions in order to assess the nutrient supplying capacity of the podzol soil and species-specific nutritional demands related to their respective growth capabilities.The results suggest that an increased rate of soil acidification yielding extra supply of ionic Al and Mn is presumably of less importance. The implications of growth rate differences amongArnica andDeschampsia as related to their nutritional demands are likely far more important.Arnica grows more slowly thanDeschampsia in fertilized humus podzol. The latter species has a much more efficient use of nutrients. Furthermore, both species differ in K-nutrition if NH4
+ is the dominant N-source, a situation normally occurring in acid podzolic soils.Deschampsia possesses the capability to adapt its metabolic nutrition (avoiding nutritional imbalances) to a wide range of nutrient supplies thereby maintaining a rather constant level of growth.Arnica, on the contrary, lacks this capability. These results are discussed in the framework of competitive relations among co-occurring plant species in the plant communityViolion caninae. It is concluded that maintenance ofArnica and likely other character species of that alliance — all characterized by a low growth rate — will only be achieved when the plant community is properly managed by trampling, mowing or light levels of grazing (low stocking rate).
