Analyses for phytate by an indirect precipitation method and for the minerals calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) by atomic absorption spectrophotometry were carried out on 100 foods available in New Zealand. Foods with 1% phytate (dry weight basis) included untoasted muesli, rolled oats, wheat germ, wheat bran, soybean, and some soy products. Most breads contained between 0.35 and 0.60% phytate; legumes on average had 0.62% phytate, as did snack bars. There was a wide variation in Ca and Zn contents: There was a tenfold variation in Ca content among the legume products, whereas there was a seventyfold variation in Zn content among the cereals. The phytate: Zn molar ratio, which is presumed to indicate the biovailability of Zn, was above 20∶1 for two-thirds of the cereals and almost all of the snack bars; it was above 15∶1 for one-third of the breads, almost all of the legumes, and half of the legume products. These high phytate: Zn molar ratios, as well as some Ca: phytate molar ratios above 6∶1, indicate that there might be a reduced biovailability of Zn in many of the foods analyzed in this study.  相似文献

In intact, uncoupled type B chloroplasts from spinach, added ATP causes a slow light-induced decline (t12 ≈ 3 min) of chlorophyll a fluorescence at room temperature. Fluorescence spectra were recorded after fast cooling to 77 K and normalized with fluorescein as an internal standard. Related to the fluorescence quenching at room temperature, an increase in Photosystem (PS) I fluorescence (F735) and a decrease in PS II fluorescence (F695) were observed in the low-temperature spectra. The change in the F735F695 ratio was abolished by the presence of methyl viologen. Fluorescence induction at 77 K of chloroplasts frozen in the quenched state showed lowered variable (Fv) and initial (F0) fluorescence at 690 nm and an increase in F0 at 735 nm. The results are interpreted as indicating an ATP-dependent change of the initial distribution of excitation energy in favor of PS I, which is controlled by the redox state of the electron-transport chain and, according to current theories, is caused by phosphorylation of the light-harvesting complex.  相似文献

An in vitro perfusion system at 37 degrees C for the assessment of rabbit kidney function is described. The purpose of this assay system is to evaluate the effects of cryobiological manipulation on kidney function. The effect of the colloids dextran (MW = 70,000, 80,000, and 180,000) in the perfusate at 110 mm Hg were compared to a reduced perfusion pressure, colloid-free perfusate. Better function was obtained at lower perfusion pressure with the colloid-free perfusate. Less damage was noted histologically on light and electron microscopy. Investigation of energy substrates on rabbit kidney function demonstrated that butyrate, or lactate, in addition to glucose resulted in increased sodium and glucose reabsorption over glucose alone. Substrate-free perfused kidneys exhibited depressed Na transport. Lactate, and to some extent butyrate, decreased net glucose utilization. An alpha-adrenergic blocking agent, isoxsuprine, in the initial flush solution did not appear to be beneficial. An increase of perfusion pressure from 50 to 75 mm Hg resulted in an increase in GFR. Tubular function was enhanced by inclusion of small amounts of BSA in the perfusate.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The formation of digestive vacuoles by starved Tetrahymena pyriformis could be induced by mixtures of latex particles and a variety of potentially digestible solutes. Latex particles themselves had little effect in inducing vacuole formation. Protein, polypeptide, and RNA were highly effective inducers, while glutamate, amino acid mixtures, polysacharides, and glucose were moderately effective. Sodium-β-glycerophosphate had a slight effect and sodium acetate was ineffective. The possible stimulus to endocytosis is discussed. The endocytic response to inducers does not appear to be an all-or-none phenomenon and varies with the concentration of inducer. The stimulatory effect for protein-related inducers seems to be produced by a large number of stimulatory molecules acting upon a single cell and the magnitude of the response appears to be related to molecular size.  相似文献

Résumé Pendant la période de reproduction, les néphrons du rein de l'Epinoche mâle subissent d'importantes modifications de structure sous l'action des hormones sexuelles. Au niveau de chacun d'entre eux, se différencient deux segments distincts par leur fonction et par leur cytologie. Le segment urinaire, très court, est formé de cellules identiques à celles du jeune, qui remplissent leur fonction d'excrétion. Le segment glandulaire, plus volumineux, subit une transformation muqueuse et élabore une sécrétion qui sert à construire le nid. L'évolution de ces deux segments est étudiée au cours de la période de reproduction et les modifications cytologiques correspondantes sont décrites.
Fine structure of the kidney of the three-spined-stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeate L.) during its mucous transformation
Summary Under the action of sexual hormones the nephrons of the kidney of the male three-spined-stickleback undergo considerable transformations during the breeding period. They differentiate into two segments which differ from one another in function and cytology. The cells of the urinary segment are identical to those of the young fish. They have an excretory function. The glandular segment undergoes a mucous transformation and synthesizes a secretion which is used for the building of the nest. The cytological transformations occuring at the level of these two segments during the breeding period are described with special attention to the mucous cells.

The variation of body shape among prosimians is reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on the selective advantages, that is the mechanical reasons, to which variants of the locomotor apparatus can be traced back. There are differences found in the cheiridia, but at present they cannot be explained in terms of mechanics; there is nearly no knowledge about the mechanical meaning of their diversity. Myological characteristics of taxa can be explained mechanically, but this has not yet been done. Well known are variations of body proportions. These discriminate higher taxa, and are largely coincident with the often-used locomotor categories. In spite of this, there are only few sound arguments about the real biomechanic value of characteristic proportions for a given locomotor mode. What is known on this field, is reviewed. Progress can be made only, if the mechanical conditions, set by postural behavior and locomotion, are understood completely. The subtle distinctions between lower taxonomic units can normally be identified only on the basis of detailed and quantified analyses of movements on one hand, and of biometrics on the other. In the few cases in which such studies have been made, the differences of morphology fit to the mechanical requirements of locomotion which also differ only in quantitative details.  相似文献

Photomorphogenesis is a conspicuous feature in conifers. In the case of the shade-intolerant Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), control of stem growth by light is well expressed at the seedling stage and can readily be studied. The present data show that hypocotyl growth is controlled by the far-red-absorbing form of phytochrome (Pfr). However, the Scots pine seedling requires blue or ultraviolet (UV-A) light to become fully responsive to Pfr. Blue/UV-A light has no direct effect on hypocotyl growth and its action appears to be limited to establishing the responsiveness of the seedling to Pfr. This type of coaction between phytochrome and blue/UV-A light has been observed previously in a number of angiosperm seedlings.
