The net effect of zooplankton on phytoplankton productivity was investigated through experiments using natural concentrations of plankton in the epilimnion of Castle Lake, California. Zooplankton enhanced algal productivity during July and August, and nocturnal grazers caused greater proportionate increases than did daytime densities. Consumers had neutral or negative effects in September. Animal biomass was associated significantly with enhanced productivity for the experiment in late July, and with decreased growth rates in the last trial of September. The direct relationship between the activities of zooplankton and primary productivity observed in other lakes is qualified by this seasonal change in net effect. The removal of algae by grazing, increases in the productivity to biomass ratio through nutrient regeneration and temporary photosynthetic inhibition from ammonia excretion appear to have shifted in relative impact during the 3 month experimental period.  相似文献

Treeline advance has occurred throughout the twentieth century in mountainous regions around the world; however, local variation and temporal lags in responses to climate warming indicate that the upper limits of some treelines are not necessarily in climatic equilibrium. These observations suggest that factors other than climate are constraining tree establishment beyond existing treelines. Using a seed addition experiment, we tested the effects of seed availability, predation and microsite limitation on the establishment of two subalpine tree species (Picea engelmannii and Abies lasiocarpa) across four treelines in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The effect of vegetation removal on seedling growth was also determined, and microclimate conditions were monitored. Establishment limitations observed in the field were placed in context with the effects of soil properties observed in a parallel experiment. The seed addition experiment revealed reduced establishment with increasing elevation, suggesting that although establishment within the treeline ecotone is at least partially seed limited, other constraints are more important beyond the current treeline. The effects of herbivory and microsite availability significantly reduced seedling establishment but were less influential beyond the treeline. Microclimate monitoring revealed that establishment was negatively related to growing season temperatures and positively related to the duration of winter snow cover, counter to the conventional expectation that establishment is limited by low temperatures. Overall, it appears that seedling establishment beyond treeline is predominantly constrained by a combination of high soil surface temperatures during the growing season, reduced winter snowpack and unfavourable soil properties. Our study supports the assertion that seedling establishment in alpine treeline ecotones is simultaneously limited by various climatic and nonclimatic drivers. Together, these factors may limit future treeline advance in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and should be considered when assessing the potential for treeline advance in alpine systems elsewhere  相似文献

Aim The historical variability of fire regimes must be understood in the context of drivers of the occurrence of fire operating at a range of spatial scales from local site conditions to broad‐scale climatic variation. In the present study we examine fire history and variations in the fire regime at multiple spatial and temporal scales for subalpine forests of Engelmann spruce–subalpine fir (Picea engelmannii, Abies lasiocarpa) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) of the southern Rocky Mountains. Location The study area is the subalpine zone of spruce–fir and lodgepole pine forests in the southern sector of Rocky Mountain National Park (ROMO), Colorado, USA, which straddles the continental divide of the northern Colorado Front Range (40°20′ N and 105°40′ W). Methods We used a combination of dendroecological and Geographic Information System methods to reconstruct fire history, including fire year, severity and extent at the forest patch level, for c. 30,000 ha of subalpine forest. We aggregated fire history information at appropriate spatial scales to test for drivers of the fire regime at local, meso, and regional scales. Results The fire histories covered c. 30,000 ha of forest and were based on a total of 676 partial cross‐sections of fire‐scarred trees and 6152 tree‐core age samples. The subalpine forest fire regime of ROMO is dominated by infrequent, extensive, stand‐replacing fire events, whereas surface fires affected only 1–3% of the forested area. Main conclusions Local‐scale influences on fire regimes are reflected by differences in the relative proportions of stands of different ages between the lodgepole pine and spruce–fir forest types. Lodgepole pine stands all originated following fires in the last 400 years; in contrast, large areas of spruce–fir forests consisted of stands not affected by fire in the past 400 years. Meso‐scale influences on fire regimes are reflected by fewer but larger fires on the west vs. east side of the continental divide. These differences appear to be explained by less frequent and severe drought on the west side, and by the spread of fires from lower‐elevation mixed‐conifer montane forests on the east side. Regional‐scale climatic variation is the primary driver of infrequent, large fire events, but its effects are modulated by local‐ and meso‐scale abiotic and biotic factors. The low incidence of fire during the period of fire‐suppression policy in the twentieth century is not unique in comparison with the previous 300 years of fire history. There is no evidence that fire suppression has resulted in either the fire regime or current forest conditions being outside their historic ranges of variability during the past 400 years. Furthermore, in the context of fuel treatments to reduce fire hazard, regardless of restoration goals, the association of extremely large and severe fires with infrequent and exceptional drought calls into question the future effectiveness of tree thinning to mitigate fire hazard in the subalpine zone.  相似文献

Aim Recent forest encroachment into montane and subalpine grasslands has occurred in the Rocky Mountains and many other mountain ranges globally. The timing, rate, and extent of tree invasion can depend on interactions among topography, positive spatial feedbacks, and temporally variable factors (especially climate, grazing, and fire). Here we examine spatial and temporal patterns of tree invasion in the Valles Caldera of the Jemez Mountains. Location This study was conducted in the Valles Caldera (35°50′–36°00′ N; 106°24′–106°37′ W), a 24‐km‐wide volcanic basin in northern New Mexico, USA. Grasslands in this otherwise forested region occur in broad valley bottoms of the caldera floor between 2575 and 2700 m, and on south‐facing slopes and mountain tops up to 3300 m. Methods We used a GIS analysis of orthorectified aerial photos taken in 1935 and 1996, covering a 40,000‐ha study area, to quantify the extent of tree invasion and to assess its relationship to spatial factors. We obtained dates of establishment from 299 increment cores and basal disks from 50 sites in the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) to reconstruct temporal patterns of tree invasion. Results The area of grasslands in our study area declined from 11,747 to 9336 ha (nearly 18%) between 1935 and 1996. Tree invasion increased with slope, elevation, and proximity to the previous tree line, but showed no relationship to aspect. Tree invasion was more rapid and continuous on upper mountain slopes, while the invasion of valley‐bottom grasslands below reversed tree lines was more episodic, and appeared to track mean summer minimum temperatures. Main conclusions The rapid and continuous invasion of steep, high‐elevation slopes suggests that frequent fire was the single most important factor in maintaining grassy communities in these sites. The slower, episodic invasion of valley‐bottom grasslands, and the apparent relationship between increased invasion and years of higher summer minimum temperatures are consistent with the hypothesis that these grasslands have been maintained by low temperatures or frosts damaging to tree seedlings. We encourage prescribed fire to restore and maintain grasslands in the VCNP, especially small patches on steep, high‐elevation slopes.  相似文献

The diet and food selection of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and macroinvertebrate drift are described for a high altitude stream (3 205 m above mean sea level) adjacent to the alpine zone on the Snowy Range in the Medicine Bow National Forest, Wyoming. Diet composition differed between brook trout of two length classes, 150 mm and > 150 mm in total length. The number of prey organisms per stomach generally declined and the proportion of terrestrial prey items increased from July to September, 1985. Bryophytes form the major seedbed for coniferous trees in the subalpine forests of central Japan. Field experiments were conducted on the floor of a closed stand dominated byTsuga on Mt Fuji to examine the seedling survival ofAbies veitchii andTsuga diversifolia in seven substrate types in relation to the morphological characteristics of the seeds and seedlings. NeitherAbies norTsuga seedlings could survive on dwarf-bamboo litter beyond 2 years after the seed rain.Abies seedlings survived not only in all types of bryophyte communities but also in larch litter. In contrast, the survival ofTsuga seedlings was restricted to communities of smaller-statured bryophytes found on logs. The seeds and 1st year seedlings ofA. veitchii were larger than those ofT. diversifolia. Abies seedlings produced hypocotyls taller than any bryophyte community and radicles which were long enough to penetrate into the moist humus layer, whereasTsuga seedling radicles presumably penetrate into humus only in bryophyte communities forming a thin mat on logs. The effect of bryophytes on survival of tree seedlings therefore depends on the relationships between the morphology of seeds and seedlings and the structure of bryophyte communities.  相似文献

 A secondary succession of vegetation on clearcut sites was studied in Western Sichuan. The coverage and biomass of trees, shrubs and herbs at different stages of succession have been surveyed. The result showed that the coverage and biomass of trees and shrubs have changed greatly in the succession. 亚高山森林冬季不同厚度雪被斑块下显著的冻融格局差异可能对凋落物分解过程中钾(K)和钠(Na)的动态具有重要影响, 然而已有研究还不足以清晰地认识这一过程。以川西亚高山森林6种代表性树种凋落物为研究对象, 采用凋落物网袋法, 探讨冬季不同厚度雪被斑块下雪被形成期、覆盖期和融化期凋落物分解过程中K和Na元素释放或富集的特征。整个雪被覆盖时期, 6种凋落物分解过程中Na均表现为富集特征, 且以覆盖期最为明显; 而K表现为释放特征, 以雪被融化期释放率最大。相对于其他雪被斑块, 厚型和中型雪被斑块下凋落物K释放率相对较高; 除康定柳(Salix paraplesia)和高山杜鹃(Rhododendron lapponicum)外, 其他物种凋落物在厚型和中型雪被斑块下Na富集率较高。同时, 统计分析结果表明, 物种和雪被显著影响冬季不同关键时期凋落物K和Na元素动态。除红桦(Betula albosinensis)和方枝柏(Sabina saltuaria)凋落物外, 温度因子与凋落物K和Na动态变化呈显著正相关。这些结果表明气候变暖情景下冬季雪被覆盖的减小将抑制亚高山森林冬季凋落物分解过程中K和Na元素的释放, 但是释放程度受凋落物质量和雪被覆盖时期的显著影响。  相似文献
