Concentrations of soluble aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) frequently reach phytotoxic levels in acid soils. While dose response relationships for these metals are well documented, the effects of combined exposure have received less attention. We have examined the effect of combinations of Al and Mn on growth and metal accumulation in Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. grown in solution culture under conditions of low ionic strength (conductivities typically < 100 µS cm−1). The nature of interaction between these metals varied with the specific physiological response, the part of the plant investigated, and the relative amount of stress imposed. Analysis of growth data provided evidence for amelioration of metal toxicity (antagonistic effects), although this effect was dose dependent. Analysis of metal content data provided evidence for antagonistic and synergistic (exacerbation of toxicity) effects, again depending on dose. Analysis of foliar symptoms also provided evidence for antagonisms and synergisms, with the nature of the response dependent on the specific physiological response and specific plant part investigated. In contrast with previous reports, evidence for antagonistic, synergistic, and multiplicative effects on growth, metal uptake, and expression of foliar symptoms have been obtained under physiologically and environmentally relevant conditions. These results suggest a more detailed analysis of the potential for interactions between metals in the environment is required.  相似文献

We studied settling-site selection and the resulting survival of two sessile scale insects, Ceroplastes rubens and C. ceriferus, in the citrus tree, Citrus unshiu, in central Japan. C. rubens preferred 0-year-old twigs most as a settling-site; the density of nymphs settling on 0-year-old twigs was significantly higher than those on ≥1-year-old twigs, and few nymphs settled on ≥3-year-old twigs. The mean survival rates from settling until reproduction in the next year were significantly higher on more preferred twigs than on less preferred ones. In C. ceriferus, nymphs significantly preferred 1- and 2-year-old twigs to 0- and ≥3-year-old ones, and the mean survival rates on the more preferred 1- and 2-year-old twigs were significantly higher than those on less preferred ≥3-year-old twigs. However, the survival rate on less preferred 0-year-old twigs was slightly higher than those on 1- and 2-year-old ones. Thus, in both species of scale, it was the preferred twigs which were more profitable sites for survival after settling, except for less preferred 0-year-old twigs for C. ceriferus. In both scale species, most mortality was due to growth cessation, which is believed to be related to the twig quality as a food source. Predators and parasitoids were minor mortality factors. Both species showed constant survival rates until the density of settled nymphs exceeded double the “upper-limit” density, whereupon they decreased drastically. Nymphs of C. rubens settling on twigs of high scale density showed a spacing-out distribution, those of C. ceriferus did not. In C. rubens, an increase in preference for originally less profitable twigs at the later stage of the settling season was observed, but not in C. ceriferus. Accordingly, individuals of C. rubens showed a stronger tendency to avoid conspecifics than did C. ceriferus. Although nymphs of the two scales clearly preferred more profitable sites, their settling-site selection did not agree with the predictions from the ideal free distribution theory (Fretwell and Lucas, 1970). The discrepancies were (1) frequent settling on less profitable sites at the early stage of the settling season, (2) insufficient utilization of the most profitable twigs, and (3) virtually 100% mortality on overcrowded twigs under conditions where unoccupied profitable twigs still remained. These discrepancies are thought due to the limited dispersal time of nymphs.  相似文献

Summary Conditional lethality in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., occurred in F2 plants when cytoplasmicchlorophyll mutant Genetic Type T275 was the female parent and when either nuclear mutants T253 or T323 plants were the male parents. Mutant T253 [Mdh1-n (Urbana) y20 (Urbana) k2] is missing two of three mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase isozymes [Mdh1-n (Urbana)] and has yellowish-green leaves [y20 (Urbana)] and a tan-saddle pattern seed coat (k2). Mutant T323 [Mdh1-n (Ames 2) y20 (Ames 2)] also is missing two of three mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase isozymes [Mdh1-n (Ames 2)] and has yellowishgreen leaves [y20 (Ames 2)], but has yellow seed coat (K2). Mutants T275, T253, and T323 are viable both in the field and glasshouse. The genotypes cyt-Y2 Mdh1-n (Urbana) y20 (Urbana) k2/Mdh1-n (Urbana) y20 (Urbana) k2 and cyt-Y2 Mdh1-n (Ames 2) y20 (Ames 2)/Mdh1-n (Ames 2) y20 (Ames 2) are conditional lethals. These genotypes are lethal under field conditions, but plants survive in reduced light under shadecloth in the glasshouse. We do not know if their interaction with cyt-Y2 is due to Mdh1-n, y20, or Mdh1-n y20. The reciprocal cross (cyt-Y2 as male parent) gives viable genotypes. These conditional lethal genotypes should be useful for studies on the interaction between organelle and nuclear genomes.This is journal paper no. Band 3 protein extracted from human erythrocyte membranes by Triton X-100 was recombined with the major classes of phospholipid occurring in the erythrocyte membrane. The resulting vesicle systems were characterized with respect to recoveries, phospholipid composition, protein content and vesicle size as well as capacity and activation energy of sulfate transport. Transport was classified into band-3-specific fluxes and unspecific permeability by inhibitors. Transport numbers (sulfate ions per band 3 per minute) served as a measure of functional recovery after reconstitution. The transport properties of band 3 proved to be insensitive to replacement of phosphatidylcholine by phosphatidylethanolamine, while sphingomyelin and phosphatidylserine gradually inactivated band-3-specific anion transport when present at mole fractions exceeding 30 mol%. The activation energy of transport remained unaltered in spite of the decrease in transport numbers. The results, which are discussed in terms of requirements of band 3 protein function with respect to the fluidity and surface charge of its lipid environment, provide a new piece of evidence that the transport function of band 3 protein depends on the properties of its lipid environment just as the catalytic properties of some other membrane enzymes. The well-established species differences in anion transport (Gruber, W. and Deuticke, B. (1973) J. Membrane Biol. 13, 19–36) may to some extent reflect this lipid dependence.  相似文献

Partition coefficients of the insecticide γ-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane (trivially, lindane) were determined in model and native membranes. Partition in egg phosphatidylcholine bilayers decreases linearly with temperature, over a range (10–40°C) at which the lipid is in the liquid-crystalline state. Addition of 50 mol% cholesterol dramatically decreases partition (2100 falls to 100, at 10°C) and abolishes the temperature dependence. First-order phase transitions of dimyristoyl-, dipalmitoyl- and distearoylphosphatidylcholines (DMPC, DPPC and DSPC) are accompanied by a sharp increase in lindane partition. Apparently, the insecticide is easily accommodated in bilayers of short-aliphatic-chain lipids, since the partitions were 2450, 600 and 50 in DMPC, DPPC and DSPC, respectively, at temperatures 10 Cdeg below the midpoint of their transitions. The lindane partition sequence in native membranes is as follows: mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, myelin, brain microsomes and erythrocytes. This sequence correlates reasonably well with the relative content of cholesterol and is similar in liposomes of total extracted lipids, although the absolute partitions showed decreased values. Therefore, the presence of proteins in native membranes contributes to the insecticide partition, probably by favouring its interaction with lipids.  相似文献

Nitrogen is the major growth-limiting nutrient for marine algae. One potential source of nitrogen for marine algae is ammonium released by invertebrates. Many mid-intertidal reefs in northeastern New Zealand are dominated by a close association between the honeycomb barnacle Chamaesipho columna and an encusting brown alga Pseudolithoderma sp. Growth of Pseudolithoderma was enhanced in the presence of live C. columna, which released ammonium at a greater rate than the maximum rate of ammonium uptake by Pseudolithoderma. Algal tissue on barnacle tests had a lower C:N ratio than tissue located more than 2 cm from the nearest barnacle, suggesting the barnacle is an important source of nitrogen for the alga. The role of nutrient exchange in determining ecological patterns of species in marine communities is discussed.  相似文献

A computer algorithm, CLIX, capable of searching a crystallographic data-base of small molecules for candidates which have both steric and chemical likelihood of binding a protein of known three-dimensional structure is presented. The algorithm is a significant advance over previous strategies which consider solely steric or chemical requirements for binding. The algorithm is shown to be capable of predicting the correct binding geometry of sialic acid to a mutant influenza-virus hemagglutinin and of proposing a number of potential new ligands to this protein.  相似文献

The sex ratio of the Arkansas 1 isolate of Heterodera glycines was determined in experiments in which ''Lee'' soybean was inoculated with either one or two larvae. A 3:1 male to female sex ratio was established for this isolate under the test conditions used. No influence of one nematode on the penetration and development to adult of another nematode in the same root was detected in double larval inoculations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The study of plant-herbivore dynamics was carried out using Aphis rumicis L. The insect is oligophagous to the genus Rumex. It utilizes its food plant by means of phloem sucking. Here, in this study, organic nitrogen as a form of a pellet fertilizer was used as a limiting factor. The major aim of the study is to find out the tripartite relationship among soil nitrogen concentration, the plant, and the insect. Observations were made from both the natural habitat site and the manipulated field site. The result shows that Aphis rumicis responded positively to increased N concentration of leaves (p< 0.005). The application of organic nitrogen did not alter the pattern of the population dynamics of Aphis rumicis over the study period. However, it may determine the time for the optimal exploitation of resources by the insect. It is also suggested that the growth efficiency of the insect relates to the C: N ratio in the phloem.  相似文献
