The life‐history tactics of the stone loach Barbatula barbatula were studied in a Mediterranean‐type climate stream (Matarranya River) located in the Ebro River basin (north‐east Spain). Maximum observed ages were 2+ years in both sexes (1% of individuals), although only 0+ and 1+ year age groups were well represented. It is the lowest longevity reported for this species in its entire distribution. The seasonal growth period started in June and continued until November, but the pattern observed was different to northern populations. Barbatula barbatula in the Matarranya River was a multiple spawner, releasing small batches of oocytes between April and June. The fecundity of females was higher and the size of oocytes smaller in 1984 than in 1985. The relative fecundity (number of ripening and ripe oocytes g?1 of fish) was lower than in northern European populations. The role of the particular environmental conditions of a Mediterranean stream was discussed in relation to the life‐history tactics of B. barbatula.  相似文献

Stream ecologists often make assumptions about the extent to which transported materials (such as dissolved nutrients, particulate organic matter and pollutants) are mixed across the width of a channel. Transverse spatial heterogeneity arises whenever material enters the channel at a point or restricted source, and is dissipated downstream as mixing evens out concentration gradients. A frequent assumption is that the distance required for complete mixing is negligibly short, and therefore that transverse heterogeneity in transported material is not to be expected. However, few mixing data are available for small (discharge <5 m3/s) channels. We measured mixing distances in three small (0.04–0.1 m3/s) eastern Iowa streams via mid-channel injections of a fluorescent tracer. Mixing distances varied, with effectively complete mixing (to statistically undetectable heterogeneity in tracer concentration) taking as little as 5 m or as much as 100+ m. Mixing was more rapid in more complex stream reaches and across constrictions and pools (vs. simpler channels). These mixing distances are not negligible when compared to typical spatial scales for ecological experiments.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in a small desert stream were influenced by environmental changes caused by recharge of water supply storage basins and an aquaculture operation. Simulium virgatum was the most abundant benthic insect collected in Whitewater Canyon (Riverside County, CA) after April; however, it was never found in trout farm effluent where the ammonium‐nitrogen concentration was > 0.25 mg/liter. S. virgatum densities downstream of the input of water from the Colorado River aqueduct were lower than at other sampling sites in the Whitewater River. Simulium tescorum, an especially anthropophilic black fly, was most abundant during February and March, was not collected from late spring through early autumn, and was found only in the highly enriched, less variable flow of trout farm effluent. The mean concentrations of ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen in the trout farm effluent nearly 1 km from the fish holding ponds were ten and two times, respectively, the ambient levels in the Whitewater River upstream of the effluent discharge point. A combination of factors probably contributed to the presence of S. tescorum in the trout farm effluent including homogenization of the flow regime, enrichment of larval resources, and the development of riparian vegetation that provided oviposition and attachment sites.  相似文献

  1. Intermittent streams (IS) comprise a large proportion of the drainage network in many parts of the world. The non-flow period of IS are known to impact stream biota because aquatic habitats dry out. However, less well understood are the relative effects of the temporal component of these drying events including their duration and frequency.
  2. Here, we characterised effects of temporal component of drying events on abundant and species-rich meiofauna. The effects were assessed in 22 streams in the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula. The duration and frequency of non-flow events was characterized over a period of 250 days prior to sampling the sediment-dwelling meiofauna in riffle zones that completely dried out.
  3. Overall, meiofauna abundances were amongst the highest ever reported for streambeds. Most meiofaunal taxa correlated positively with the frequency of drying events and correlated positively with the length of dry periods recorded shortly before sampling, suggesting that the community was able to recover quickly. Tardigrades were the only group to correlate positively with the longest dry periods, suggesting that they had the best resilience capabilities in streams that had experienced the longest droughts.
  4. On average, nematodes made up half of the meiofauna. We identified a total of 113 different nematode species. The nematode community was more taxonomically diverse in IS, with a smaller proportion of bacterivores and a higher proportion of fungivore species such as Filenchus vulgaris. Thereby resembling the trophic structure commonly observed in soil ecosystems.
  5. Our results show that most meiofauna were positively influenced by drying disturbance, that is being able to quickly recover after them. This suggests outstanding resilience capabilities, and points out meiofaunal organisms as key players for kick-starting stream food webs and functions once flow returns.

Abstract In this paper we analyzed the emergence phenology of a highly diverse chironomid assemblage to test for association between emergence and some environmental variables and for the presence of synchrony in emergence. We used a time series of 48 weekly samples from a tropical low order forested stream (south‐eastern Brazil) to describe how this assemblage varied in an intra‐annual scale. An eigenvector‐based filtering approach was adapted to create temporal variables that could be used in our multiple regression analyses, trying to overcome the problems of temporal autocorrelation. Emergence of the Chironomidae, two subfamilies, concordant species, and of dominant species was not related to rainfall, temperature, moon phase or photoperiod. Taxonomic composition and species richness did not change across time. The number of emerging individuals of the subfamily Orthocladiinae was significantly related to temperature and to temporal filters. The inclusion of the temporal filters into the analyses almost eliminated autocorrelation in the regression residuals. We detected interspecific synchrony in a group of species, but an absence of trends and periodicity in chironomid emergence, which was not related to environmental variables. This suggests that unknown factors, differing from those known to control emergence in temperate regions, operate in the tropics. The erratic behaviour of the analyzed series raises the question of whether chaotic dynamics may generate this variability.  相似文献

1. Terrestrial dispersal by aquatic insects increases population connectivity in some stream species by allowing individuals to move outside the structure of the stream network. In addition, individual survival and reproductive success (as well as dispersal) are tightly linked to the quality of the terrestrial habitat. 2. In historically forested catchments, deforestation and altered land use have the potential to interfere with mayfly dispersal or mating behaviours by degrading the quality of the terrestrial matrix among headwater streams. We hypothesised that loss of tree cover in first‐order catchments would be associated with an increase in population substructure and a decrease in genetic diversity of mayfly populations. 3. To test this hypothesis, we investigated spatial patterns of genetic variation in the common mayfly Ephemerella invaria across a gradient of deforestation in the central piedmont region of eastern United States. Intraspecific genetic diversity and population substructure were estimated from data obtained using fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. 4. We found that mayfly populations had low population substructure within headwater stream networks and that genetic diversity was strongly negatively correlated with mean deforestation of the first‐order catchments. The large‐scale pattern of population substructure followed a pattern of isolation by distance (IBD) in which genetic differentiation increases with geographical distance, but assignment tests placed a few individuals into populations 300 km away from the collection site. 5. Our results show that loss of genetic diversity in this widespread aquatic insect species is co‐occurring with deforestation of headwater streams. 6. Most arguments supporting protection of headwater streams in the United States have centred on the role of these streams as hydrological and biogeochemical conduits to downstream waters. Our work suggests that headwater stream land use, and specifically tree cover, may have a role in the maintenance of regional genetic diversity in some common aquatic insect species.  相似文献

  1. Mechanisms driving patterns of occurrence and co-occurrence among North American freshwater fishes are poorly understood. In particular, the influence of biotic interactions on coexistence among stream reaches and their effects on regional species distribution patterns is not well understood for congeneric headwater fishes.
  2. Occupancy models provide a useful framework for examining patterns of co-occurrence while also accounting for imperfect detection. Occupancy models may be extended to test for evidence that a dominant species influences the occurrence of a subordinate species and thus evaluate support for the hypothesis that species interactions drive patterns of coexistence.
  3. We examined patterns of occurrence and co-occurrence at the stream-reach scale among three species of darters (Percidae: Etheostomatinae) that occupy headwater streams within a Gulf Coastal Plain drainage in the south-eastern U.S.A. We assessed species occurrences at 97 sites in first- to third-order streams on one occasion each and used data from four sub-reaches sampled with equal effort at each site to estimate species-specific detection probabilities. Following sampling, a suite of habitat variables was collected at three equidistant points along each of the three transects established within a sub-reach. Coarse (stream-segment, catchment, network) scale variables were also incorporated using geospatial data. Single-species and two-species occupancy models were used to examine patterns of occupancy and coexistence.
  4. The occupancy of each species was influenced by distinct habitat variables. Goldstripe darters (Etheostoma parvipinne) were constrained by a stream size gradient, groundwater input appeared to influence the occurrence of Yazoo darters (Etheostoma raneyi), and local habitat heterogeneity (e.g. variation in depth and current velocity) appeared to influence the occupancy of redspot darters (Etheostoma artesiae).
  5. We found no evidence that the presence of one species influenced the occurrence of another within a stream-reach based on two-species occupancy models. Rather, species co-occurrences were best explained as independent occurrences within a stream-reach according to species-specific habitat associations.
  6. Occupancy modelling may provide a suitable framework for evaluating the influence of biotic interactions among congeneric stream fishes along species-specific habitat gradients at the stream reach scale. Our study offers insight into how habitat variation can influence coexistence of potential competitors across a large river system.

After the formation of a drinking water reservoir at Butoniga, Istria, research on the fauna of the Chironomidae larvae was undertaken in the feeder waters and the reservoir itself. Forty eight species were identified, belonging to the subfamilies Chironominae, Orthocladiinae, Diamesinae and Tanypodinae. Chironomidae colonized the reservoir waters relatively more quickly than other groups of macroscopic invertebrates. The similarity quotient (QS) of Chironomidae of the feeder waters and the reservoir is only 37.8%, which points to the formation of new communities in the reservoir. There were qualitative and quantitative changes in the composition of Chironomidae fauna in the river Mirna and in the river Butoniga downstream from the dam after water was released from the reservoir for the purpose of testing the dam. The Chironomid composition of the feeder waters places them in quality grade II. In the Butoniga reservoir the bottom water was assigned to grade II–III, because of the decomposition of the remains of surface fauna.  相似文献

Disturbance, resource supply, and food-web architecture in streams   总被引:8,自引:1,他引:7
We studied food webs comprising fish, macroinvertebrates, and algae (identified to species or morphospecies) in small streams using a consistent methodology at the same spatial and temporal scales. Our aim was to test a priori hypotheses derived from dynamic-demographic and energetics models concerning the effects of disturbance and resource availability on food-web attributes. The regime of bed disturbance affecting the organisms in the webs was measured in 10 streams. We also derived measures of the supply of resources for animals in the webs in terms of algal primary productivity and detritus standing crop. Both web size and number of links per species were significantly negatively related to mean intensity of bed disturbance. Mean chain length had a significant positive relationship with algal primary productivity but not disturbance. No food-web attribute was related to detritus standing crop.  相似文献
