Surveys of water chemistry and algal vegetation at nine stream sites in the Asir Mountains, Saudi Arabia, were made in March, 1984. The waters were moderately to highly calcareous with a relatively high Mg: Ca ratio and high concentrations of reactive-Si (x = 12.2 mg l–1) and F (x = 0.73 mg l–1). Ammonia typically constituted about one-sixth of the inorganic nitrogen. Filamentous algae (Cladophora and/or Spirogyra) were abundant at all but one site. However two sites, Wadi Habaqah and Al Tanoumah, differed considerably from the others in their overall floristic composition, with various species of Rivulariaceae, Nostoc verrucosum, Schizothrix lardacea and certain other blue-green algae present only here. With one minor exception, heterocystous blue-green algae were absent at the other sites. Tufa was deposited at these two sites, but not elsewhere. Species which appeared to play an active role in calcification included Dichothrix gypsophila, Calothrix parietina, Cladophora glomerata and the moss Bryum sp. A community apparently not previously recorded in the literature was abundant at Wadi Habaqah. This consisted of thick mats of Cladophora glomerata, with a thin surface layer of Zygnemales and numerous colonies of Nostoc verrucosum inside, or towards the underside, of the mat.  相似文献

Species aggregation with detritus was examined in a zoobenthic stream community. Detritus was quantified (dry weight in particle size categories) in contiguously arranged quadrats along four transects within a 40m stream section. Total organism density was found to be positively related to increasing detrital biomass (dry weight) in all transects, although the magnitude of this association was influenced by the detrital particle size distribution in each quadrat. Eliminating certain particle size categories of detritus resulted in substantial changes in the magnitude of association. For example, in one transect, total organism density and total detrital biomass showed no association. However, when one particle size category (greater than 10 mm) was removed a highly significant relationship was found. Total detrital biomass was found to be a useful predictor of organism distribution, however, inordinately high detrital biomass and variance within larger particle size categories can mask a relationship. This result suggests that the use of discrete size categories is necessary when considering species/ detrital relationships.Significant associations were found between the density of particular species and total biomass of detritus. The magnitude, as well as significance, of these associations were found to vary when correlations were calculated with restricted particle size categories of detritus. Species associations were often not consistent between transects, possibly due to local characteristics of detritus or overriding environmental factors. Current velocity was found to be unimportant in determining the detrital biomass held in the substrate. Likewise, few associations were found between current velocity and organism density in three out of four transects. Results of this study suggest that habitat selection by some taxa is influenced by local variation in detrital biomass, as well as detrital particle size composition.  相似文献

Benthic invertebrates in a tropical river (Menik Ganga) recolonised denuded substrates within 2–3 weeks, though full diversity was not achieved until 4 weeks. No well defined succession was observed. All taxa apparently colonised at random from drift, upstream and vertical sources. Traps colonised from only one of these sources developed as abundant and diverse a fauna as control traps in 5 weeks. Strong spatial heterogeneity in the number and composition of colonisers was observed between replicate traps. It is suggested that colonisation resulted from random foraging activities and most colonists were derived from veryshort distances.  相似文献

The invertebrate fauna of a small northern stream was examined within Edmonton, Alberta. Many invertebrates that were common upstream of the city were absent or rare within the city. In contrast, some tubificids and chironomids were very abundant within the city. Diversity and richness (number of taxa) of the fauna were much lower within Edmonton than upstream, while the total density was much higher within the city. These changes in the urban invertebrate fauna were apparently caused by the discharge of organic materials and silt from storm sewer runoff.Chemical analysis of routinely-collected water samples did not show significant differences between urban and non-urban sites. This was probably due to the sporadic nature of storm sewer runoff. Peak levels of contaminants in the stream were usually missed because of the routine nature of sampling. Aquatic invertebrates, which exhibit long-term responses to sporadic runoff incidents, provided a better indication of stream water quality than did routine chemical monitoring.  相似文献

Epilithic and epiphytic diatoms were collected monthly from 18 June 1979 through 19 May 1980 from both shaded and unshaded sites of Sessums Creek, a shallow, oligotrophic and strongly alkaline stream in northeastern Mississippi. The dominant macroalgae were filamentous green algae belonging to the non-mucilage producing genera Cladophora and Rhizoclonium. Ninety taxa were identified with Navicula minima Grun. and Nitzschia dissipata (Kütz.) Grun. accounting for 50% of all valves counted. Other important taxa were Navicula menisculus var. upsaliensis (Grun.) Grun., N. cryptocephala var. veneta (Kütz.) Rabh., Achnanthes minutissima Kütz. and Cymbella turgida (Greg.) Cl. With few exceptions, the more dominant taxa were equally abundant in the shaded and unshaded sites and also in the epilithon and epiphyton. Species diversity (H') and the number of taxa in a sample in all four habitats showed an identical pattern, being lowest in winter and highest in fall. No one pair of habitats was more structurally similar than any-other pair when compared by a similarity index (SIMI). Apparently, differences in light intensity and substrate type had little effect on diatom distribution in Sessums Creek and it was concluded that the locality sampled supported a single, nearly homogeneous diatom community.  相似文献

The invertebrate assemblages of the River Lambourn and its tributary, the Winterbourne stream, were investigated as part of a broad ecological study prior to water resource development in the catchment. The longitudinal distribution of the invertebrate fauna within the Winterbourne stream was examined in detail and supporting data for the R. Lambourn revealed that the upstream intermittent section of each water course had an invertebrate assemblage which was distinct from the fauna downstream where flow was permanent. Within the perennial zone taxon richness tended to increase downstream.A one-year programme of monthly quantitative sampling on five distinct biotopes (Ranunculus, Berula, Callitriche, gravel and silt) at two contrasted sites (shaded and unshaded) was undertaken in the lower perennial of the R. Lambourn below the confluence with the Winterbourne. On each study site, the taxon richness, numerical abundance and biomass of invertebrates were significantly higher on the three macrophytes than on gravel and silt. There were also statistically significant seasonal changes in the biomass of invertebrates on each site. Estimates of total biomass of invertebrates per site revealed a late spring peak (May/June) and a late autumn (November/December) peak, neither of which coincided with the summer peak biomass of macrophytes. This suggested that, in the lower perennial, the level of food resources (epiphytic algae in late spring and fallen tree leaves plus decaying macrophytes in autumn) rather than available habitat, were a major influence on population levels for most of the year.Quantitative sampling of each biotope on each site continued in June and December only for a period of 8 years (1971–78), during which time the river experienced a minor drought (1973) and a severe drought (1976). The Chironomidae showed a strong positive response to conditions of low flow in June of 1973 and 1976, when exceptionally high densities of larvae were recorded. Although further between-year differences were recorded in several other major components of the invertebrate fauna, which may have been related to conditions of low discharge, they did not have long-term consequences for the fauna in the lower perennial of the R. Lambourn.In contrast, in the upper perennial, the prolonged drought of 1976 resulted in the loss of wetted perimeter and macrophytes, coupled with deposition of silt, all of which had deleterious effects on the invertebrate assemblages. The following year, despite a normal discharge regime and the removal of silt, some submerged macrophytes were slow to return to their pre-drought condition. In the intermittent section, the drought of 1976 resulted in the total loss of flow for a 16 month period instead of a more typical four month period of water loss.Thus, chalk streams encompass within a single system both stable and extreme hydrological regimes which offer unique opportunities for investigating the processes of community formation and maintenance.  相似文献

Tropical Asian rivers are characterized by their flow seasonality. One (sometimes two) peaks in discharge cause temporary declines in phytoplankton, zooplankton and zoobenthos biomass, but lead to inundation of river floodplains and significant land-water interactions. Fishes undertake lateral or longitudinal breeding migrations within the river system during the flood season, which is marked also by intensive feeding upon allochthonous inputs.Among the diverse human influences upon tropical Asian rivers, three threats stand out. Firstly, degradation of drainage basins (particularly through deforestation and overgrazing) leads to increased suspended sediment loads and extensive flooding. Excessive floodplain siltation alters habitats causing species decline or disappearance. The second threat — river regulation and control — has been practised widely in the region for centuries but, with the planned development of massive projects on the Yangtze and Mekong Rivers, the potential for environmental damage has increased. Flow regulation reduces flood-season peaks, changing the magnitude and extent of floodplain inundation and land-water interactions. Fish breeding migrations may be disrupted, because dams block migration routes or changed flow regimes fail to stimulate reproduction. River pollution is pervasive throughout the region, and constitutes the third threat. Untreated sewage is a particular problem in densely-populated areas, and pollution by industrial effluents and mining wastes is becoming more important. The effects of pollution in tropical Asian rivers are essentially the same as those recorded in north-temperate regions. However, biological understanding has yet to be matched by an ability to halt or limit river degradation.Together, the three threats have led to declines and range constrictions of aquatic animals and those terrestrial species associated with riparian corridors and floodplains. River dolphins and certain crocodilians are particularly threatened, but declines in species of waterfowl, floodplain deer, a host of fishes, macrophytes, and invertebrates have been documented. Reversing the trend is difficult as pollution, flow regulation, and drainage-basin degradation have non-additive detrimental effects on river ecosystems, and enhance the success of exotic invasive species. Moreover, our ability to predict the outcome of man-made changes is hampered by a lack of knowledge of species' life histories and a paucity of data on the trophic basis of production. Despite a lack of detailed information, conservation of tropical Asian rivers will be effected only if limnologists move beyond the bailiwick of science. Ecologically viable management strategies for tropical Asian rivers will succeed only if the socioeconomic context of development plans is taken into account. A failure to rise this challenge will result in the further degradation of these endangered ecosystems.  相似文献

Predictability of stream discharge and particulate organic matter (POM) in the water column was estimated, using Colwell's indices of constancy and contingency, for 6 Texas prairie streams (1 each of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order with intermittent or perennial discharge). Stream discharge in these 6 prairie streams varied between 0 and 36000 1 s–1, depending on the stream and season. Predictability (P) of discharge in these streams ranged from 0.45 to 0.62, within the range of values expected for North American streams. Predictability of stream discharge was not significantly different between streams. Particulate organic matter concentrations in these prairie streams are relatively low, ranging from 0.25 to 4.00 mg AFDM 1–1. Predictability of POM concentration in these streams was high, ranging from 0.75 to 0.85, and was largely the result of constancy of POM concentrations. Within the different POM size classes, Fine POM (FPOM) had the highest predictability (P = 0.89–0.96). In spite of relatively unpredictable stream discharge, POM remained fairly constant providing a measure of habitat predictability and stability.  相似文献

Wild and hatchery-reared 8–12-month-old (5–8 cm) trout, Salmo frurta L., were stocked in tributaries of the River Gudenb. Mortality was examined by means of electrofishing. Repeated electrofishing and handling caused a small increase in mortality. The daily instantaneous mortality rate Z was high during the first 2 months after stocking, ranging from 0.0070 for wild trout to 0.0326 for domestic trout at a stocking density of one trout per m2 and from 0.0206 (wild trout) to 0.0888 (domestic trout) at a stocking density of two trout per m2. Two months after stocking, Z decreased drastically ranging from 0.0007 (wild trout) to 0.0067 (domestic trout). When stocked, first-generation hatchery trout showed Z equal to domestic trout. Wild trout resident in the experimental stream were negatively affected by the introduction of domestic trout and wild trout from another stream. at a stocking density above the carrying capacity. It is concluded that the higher mortality of domestic trout was caused by changes in food, feeding and exercise, possibly combined with the lack of selection in the hatchery. Smolt yield at age 2+ was 3.2% (0+ trout stocked in the fall)-7.0% (1 + trout stocked in the spring) of the domestic trout stocked (approx. one-sixth to one-third of natural populations) and 65.2–68.7% of the domestic trout present before the smolt run. For first generation hatchery trout of wild origin the corresponding figures were 7.3% (age 0 +) and 93.4%, and for wild trout introduced to the experimental stream they were 11.1% (age0 +)and39.8%.  相似文献

The River Todasana is a small rain tropical forest stream emptying to the Caribbean Sea (Venezuela). Fish were sampled by electrofishing at three contiguous sites (pool, riffle, raceway). Nine species were recorded. Their mean biomass and production were: 43.72 kg ha−1 and 36.94 kg ha−1 yr−1, maximum: 55.47 kg ha−1 and 42.33 kg ha−1 yr−1, respectively.  相似文献
