More intense and frequent hurricanes may lead to long‐lasting effects to tropical ecosystems. Here, we describe the immediate impact on the butterfly community of a lowland forest in Belize, following Hurricane Earl. Systemic pools of ATP are elevated in individuals homozygous for cystic fibrosis (CF) as evidenced by elevated blood and plasma ATP levels. This elevated ATP level seems to provide benefit in the presence of advanced solid tumors (Abraham et al., Nature Medicine 2(5):593–596, 1996). We published in this journal a paper showing that IV ATP can elevate the depleted ATP pools of advanced cancer patients up to levels found in CF patients with subsequent clinical, biochemical, and quality of life (QOL) improvements (Rapaport et al., Purinergic Signalling 11(2): 251–262, 2015). We hypothesize that the elevated ATP levels seen in CF patients may be benefiting CF patients in another way: by improving their survival after contracting COVID-19. We discuss here the reasoning behind this hypothesis and suggest how these findings might be applied clinically in the general population. 相似文献

Is it possible to develop a reliable, safe treatment for the widespread COVID-19 pandemic shortly? COVID-19 is characterized by a disruptive cytokine storm, quickly and often irreversibly damaging the patient’s lungs, as its main target organ, leading to lung failure and death. Actual experimental therapies are trying to reduce the activation of some specific cytokines, such as IL-6, somewhat reducing the burden for the patient. However, they are often unable to block the whole storm occurring at the cytokine level. In presence of the cytokine storm, especially in severe patients, antagomiRs, already demonstrated to be efficient and secure in cardiovascular disease, could represent a useful alternative to such treatment, customizable upon the disease specificities and applicable to other coronaviruses possibly associated with such clinical manifestations, while a reliable, efficient vaccine is being distributed. 相似文献

This paper, based on a literature review, presents a quantitative overview of the role of natural disturbances in European forests from 1850 to 2000. Such an overview provides a basis for modelling the possible impacts of climate change and enables one to assess trends in disturbance regimes in different countries and/or periods. Over the period 1950–2000, an annual average of 35 million m3 wood was damaged by disturbances; there was much variation between years. Storms were responsible for 53% of the total damage, fire for 16%, snow for 3% and other abiotic causes for 5%. Biotic factors caused 16% of the damage, and half of this was caused by bark beetles. For 7% of the damage, no cause was given or there was a combination of causes. The 35 million m3 of damage is about 8.1% of the total fellings in Europe and about 0.15% of the total volume of growing stock. Over the period 1961–2000, the average annual area of forest fires was 213 000 ha, which is 0.15% of the total forest area in Europe. Most types of damage seem to be increasing. This is partly an artefact of the improved availability of information. The most likely explanations for an increase in damage from disturbances are changes in forest management and resulting changes in the condition of the forest. Forest area, average volume of growing stock and average stand age have increased considerably, making the forest more vulnerable and increasing the resources that can be damaged. Since forest resources are expected to continue to increase, it is likely that damage from disturbances will also increase in future. 相似文献

AbstractThe lower Maastrichtian deposits of the Mateur-Beja area in northern Tunisia are mainly composed of fine-grained marl and limestone alternations occasionally interbedded by coarse-grained calcarenites and gravel deposits. In the coarse-grained intervals sedimentary structures are indicative of storm-induced high-energy currents in an outer ramp to slope setting and of local reworking by bottom currents in the basin. In deeper environments, fine-grained sediments accumulated mainly while settling from storm-induced suspensions. The lower Maastrichtian deposits contain abundant Zoophycos exhibiting two main morphotypes, skirt-shaped Zoophycos in deposits around storm-wave base and tongue-shaped Zoophycos in somewhat deeper sediments. The types differ in burrow architecture, morphology of lobes, and size of structural elements. These differences are attributed to different behavioral programs modulated by the availability of benthic food that decreased seaward. Storm-affected environments seem to be a prerequisite for these Zoophycos-producers to choose their habitat. 相似文献

1 Populations of the spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus (L.), are known to grow rapidly in storm‐disturbed stands as a result of relaxation from intraspecific competition. In the present study, it was tested whether a second mechanism, escape in space from natural enemies, also contributes to the rapid population increase. 2 The experiment was conducted during the initiation phase of five local outbreaks of I. typographus triggered by a storm‐disturbance in November 1995 in southern Sweden. 3 The impact of natural enemies on the ratio of increase (number of daughters per mother) of I. typographus was compared pairwise between disturbed stands with high numbers of storm‐felled trees and undisturbed stands without wind‐felled trees. 4 Enemy impact was assessed by comparing the ratio of increase in uncaged (exposed to enemies) and caged (protected from enemies) bolts colonized by I. typographus prior to being placed in the stands. The experiment was conducted in the second and third summers after the storm‐felling. 5 Enemy impact was about twice as high in stands without wind‐felled trees compared with in stands with wind‐felled trees in the second summer whereas there was no significant difference between the stand types in the third summer. 6 The result demonstrates that spatial escape from enemies contributes to the rapid population growth of I. typographus after storm‐disturbances. 相似文献

Weekly measurements during the open season at five stations on a small Ontario stream system showed that the size distribution of fine particles in the water varied irregularly. In general, rainfall increased their total amount and also the concentration of dissolved organic carbon. Clearly other local factors affect the supply of particles, and each reach behaves individually and may react differently to successive storms. The behaviour of dissolved material is more predictable, and it is clear that much is rapidly removed from solution. It was shown that high concentrations of particles are associated with high amounts of plant pigments, carbohydrate, and protein. Similarly dissolved carbohydrate and protein are raised when rain increases dissolved organic carbon. These findings suggest a series of mechanisms by which a woodland stream may trap woodland produced energy and cycle it through the aquatic system.This work was supported by a research grant from the National Research Council of Canada to H.
