Sea stars adhere strongly but temporarily to underwater substrata via the secretion of a blend of proteins, forming an adhesive footprint that they leave on the surface after detachment. Their tube feet enclose a duo-gland adhesive system comprising two types of adhesive cells, contributing different layers of the footprint and de-adhesive cells. In this study, we characterized the catalogue of sea star footprint proteins (Sfps) in the species Asterias rubens to gain insights in their potential function. We identified 16 Sfps and mapped their expression to type 1 and/or type 2 adhesive cells or to de-adhesive cells by double fluorescent in situ hybridization. Based on their cellular expression pattern and their conserved functional domains, we propose that the identified Sfps serve different functions during attachment, with two Sfps coupling to the surface, six providing cohesive strength and the rest forming a binding matrix. Immunolabelling of footprints with antibodies directed against one protein of each category confirmed these roles. A de-adhesive gland cell-specific astacin-like proteinase presumably weakens the bond between the adhesive material and the tube foot surface during detachment. Overall, we provide a model for temporary adhesion in sea stars, including a comprehensive list of the proteins involved.  相似文献

本文应用弹性分析和边际分析数学方法对离体厚朴叶片衰老中的SOD活性对叶绿素、蛋白质及质膜透性效应进行了研究。结果表明:厚朴叶片衰老中,SOD活性对叶绿素或蛋白质或质膜透性的边际量和弹性系数的效应,是随着外源营养条件和温度变化而变化的。SOD活性与叶绿素及蛋白质的弹性系数呈显著正相关,SOD对它们的效应处于递增阶段,而SOD活性与质膜透性的弹性系数呈显著负相关,其效应处于负效应阶段。  相似文献

Treatment of diseased magnolia plants with Oxytetracycline, Baytril or Tylan did not reduce the number of symptomatic plants, but promoted shoot growth, development of symptomless leaves and flower buds. The most efficient were 500 ppm Baytril, 200 ppm Tylan and 500 or 1000 ppm Oxytetracycline. Lower concentrations of Baytril and Oxytetracycline were less effective and higher concentrations of Tylan decreased the growth of magnolia shoots. All the tested antibiotic treated and untreated magnolias were shown by polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) to contain the AY (16SrI) phytoplasma and two also to contain a phytoplasma related to apple proliferation phytoplasma group (16SrX). The results indicate that Magnolia is a natural host of phytoplasmas belonging to the aster yellows and apple proliferation phytoplasma groups, and support the suggestion that phytoplasmas are the cause of magnolia stunting disease.  相似文献

Two years of giant star grass, Cynodon nlemluensis var. nlemfuensis, in a field plot markedly reduced the incidence of the root-knot nematodes. Tomato planted following the grass showed very little or no root galling and the yield was thrice that of tomato planted on an adjacent field plot previously cropped to tomato. Replicated greenhouse experiments indicated that six varieties of Cynodon were resistant to root-knot nematode but it took up to 6 months of grass growth to appreciably lower the nematode population. The nematodes were eliminated from the soil by all the six grass varieties after 18 months.  相似文献

Disturbances such as disease can reshape communities through interruption of ecological interactions. Changes to population demographics alter how effectively a species performs its ecological role. While a population may recover in density, this may not translate to recovery of ecological function. In 2013, a sea star wasting syndrome outbreak caused mass mortality of the keystone predator Pisaster ochraceus on the North American Pacific coast. We analyzed sea star counts, biomass, size distributions, and recruitment from long‐term intertidal monitoring sites from San Diego to Alaska to assess regional trends in sea star recovery following the outbreak. Recruitment, an indicator of population recovery, has been spatially patchy and varied within and among regions of the coast. Despite sea star counts approaching predisease numbers, sea star biomass, a measure of predation potential on the mussel Mytilus californianus, has remained low. This indicates that post‐outbreak populations have not regained their full predation pressure. The regional variability in percent of recovering sites suggested differences in factors promoting sea star recovery between regions but did not show consistent patterns in postoutbreak recruitment on a coast‐wide scale. These results shape predictions of where changes in community composition are likely to occur in years following the disease outbreak and provide insight into how populations of keystone species resume their ecological roles following mortality‐inducing disturbances.  相似文献

Dental caries affects people of all ages and is a worldwide health concern. Streptococcus mutans is a major cariogenic bacterium because of its ability to form biofilm and induce an acidic environment. In this study, the antibacterial activities of magnolol and honokiol, the main constituents of the bark of magnolia plants, toward planktonic cell and biofilm of S. mutans were examined and compared with those of chlorhexidine. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of magnolol, honokiol and chlorhexidine for S. mutans were 10, 10 and 0.25 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, each agent showed bactericidal activity against S. mutans planktonic cells and inhibited biofilm formation in a dose‐ and time‐dependent manner. Magnolol (50 µg/mL) had greater bactericidal activity against S. mutans biofilm than honokiol (50 µg/mL) and chlorhexidine (500 µg/mL) at 5 min after exposure, while all showed scant activity against biofilm at 30 s. Furthermore; chlorhexidine (0.5–500 µg/mL) exhibited high cellular toxicity for the gingival epithelial cell line Ca9‐22 at 1 hr, whereas magnolol (50 µg/mL) and honokiol (50 µg/mL) did not. Thus; it was found that magnolol has antimicrobial activities against planktonic and biofilm cells of S. mutans. Magnolol may be a candidate for prevention and management of dental caries.  相似文献

Over 20 species of asteroids were devastated by a sea star wasting disease (SSWD) epizootic, linked to a densovirus, from Mexico to Alaska in 2013 and 2014. For Pisaster ochraceus from the San Juan Islands, South Puget Sound and Washington outer coast, time-series monitoring showed rapid disease spread, high mortality rates in 2014, and continuing levels of wasting in the survivors in 2015. Peak prevalence of disease at 16 sites ranged to 100%, with an overall mean of 61%. Analysis of longitudinal data showed disease risk was correlated with both size and temperature and resulted in shifts in population size structure; adult populations fell to one quarter of pre-outbreak abundances. In laboratory experiments, time between development of disease signs and death was influenced by temperature in adults but not juveniles and adult mortality was 18% higher in the 19°C treatment compared to the lower temperature treatments. While larger ochre stars developed disease signs sooner than juveniles, diseased juveniles died more quickly than diseased adults. Unusual 2–3°C warm temperature anomalies were coincident with the summer 2014 mortalities. We suggest these warm waters could have increased the disease progression and mortality rates of SSWD in Washington State.  相似文献
