Inland salt lakes are widely distributed in southern Africa: they are particularly common in South Africa, but many occur in Namibia and Botswana. All are shallow, and most are ephemeral with salinities that are not very high (mostly < 50 g l−1). Fringing zones of halophytes or submerged macrophytes are neither well-developed nor taxonomically diverse. The Cyanobacteria, especially Nodularia spumigena, often dominate the phytoplankton. The fauna of the Makgadikgadi area (northeast Botswana) is diverse and is similar to that of East African salt lakes. The aquatic fauna of salt water south of the Makgadikgadi Basin, on the other hand, is extremely depauperate, has no well-defined assemblage confined to saline waters, and appears mostly to comprise tolerant freshwater forms. Lovenula falcifera and Metadiaptomus transvaalensis (diaptomid copepods), Moina micrura (Cladocera) and Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera) are frequently encountered zooplankton species, a few species of insects (Anisops sp., beetles, chironomids and ephydrids) are the principal non-planktonic macroinvertebrates. Artemia ‘salina’ is occasionally present, but may be an introduced form. The avifauna, in contrast to the aquatic macroinvertebrate fauna, is rich, with the greater and lesser flamingo often common.  相似文献

A number of shallow pans was investigated between May 1982 and May 1985 in the Seewinkel region between Neusiedlersee and the Hungarian border. Chemical and zooplankton samples were obtained at three monthly intervals. Analyses indicated some changes during the past decades. Human activity has resulted in some changes to water chemistry and zooplankton composition in a few pans, and many smaller pans have now disappeared.  相似文献

Two alkaline saline inland lakes of Indian arid region were studied during 1984 and 1985, to assess functioning and interaction of various environmental and biological factors. Changes in physical and chemical variables, planktonic composition, chlorophyll content and phytoplankton primary productivity were examined.Salinity in both lakes fluctuated from almost fresh water (1.80), to hypersaline (300) and acted as the main controlling factor for almost all the biotic parameters. Maximum total alkalinities were 2162 mg l–1 and 2090 mg l–1, respectively in Sambhar and Didwana lakes. Dissolved oxygen ranged from completely anoxic conditions to maxima of 11.68 and 7.29 mg 1–1, respectively in Sambhar and Didwana lakes. Nutrient enrichment in the lakes was low.The phytoplankton species composition of Sambhar lake was reduced from an earlier reported 20 genera to only 11 (Nostoc, Microcystis, Spirulina, Aphanocapsa, Oscillatoria, Merismopedia, Nitzschia, Navicula, Synedra, Cosmarium and Closterium). Phytoplankton of Didwana was composed of only 9 genera including Anabaena and Nodularia. Sambhar lake, which once contained Artemia, is now totally devoid of them. On the other hand, Artemia was the most dominant zooplankter in Didwana lake at a salinity range of 15–288. Other zooplankters such as Moina, Cyclops and Brachionus flourished at lower salinity levels in Didwana lake. The seasonal quantitative and qualitative phyto- and zooplankton changes in relation to salinity are documented.  相似文献

Periodic high spring runoff, in addition to lake surface snow and ice melt, is shown to be a major cause of sharp secondary chemocline formation in a small (20 ha) lake arid and south-central British Columbia. Initially detected in 1982 at about 1 m and enhanced by high inflow of low salinity meltwater in spring 1983, the secondary chemocline gradually deepened and broke down over four subsequent years. Associated microstratification layers (major changes within a few cm of depth), exhibited very high temperatures (> 30 °C), and very high dissolved oxygen (> 200% saturation) as well as very low (close to 0% saturation) levels. Oxygen supersaturation resulted from photosynthetic production at the microstratification boundaries. In the springs of 1982 and 1983, formation of an anoxic layer between regions of high oxygen concentration, separated the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities into two layers above the primary chemocline. The several year persistence of the secondary chemoclines and associated interface processes (concentration of particulate organic matter, bacterial decomposition, nutrient regeneration, phytoplanktonic production) attest to their functional importance in this meromictic lake.  相似文献

The littoral benthos of 18 lakes in Alberta and Saskatchewan ranging in salinity from 3 to 126 (g1–1 TDS) were investigated twice, in the spring and in the summer of 1986. Multiple Ekman dredge samples were taken at water depths of about 0.5, 1.0 and 2 metres in each transect. Two to three transects were used in each lake according to its estimated limnological diversity for a total of 114 stations. A total of 76 species was present varying from 29–31 species in the three lakes of lowest salinity (means of 3.1–5.55) to only 2 species in lakes exceeding 100. Species richness decreased rapidly in salinities greater than 15.Biomass maximum mean of 10.91 g m–2 dry weight (maximum 63.0 g m–2) occurred in culturally eutrophic Humboldt Lake (3.1) but one third as great in other low salinity lakes. However, biomass again increased to about 4.5 gm–2 in two lakes of 15 As the salinity increased still further biomass declined steadily until a minimum of 0.0212 g m–2 was recorded in most saline Aroma Lake (mean 119). Summer biomass (11 lakes) was greater than spring biomass (4 lakes) because some groups such as amphipods, corixids and ostracods became more abundant in summer. Wet weight biomass averaged 15.8 of dry weight biomass.Seasonality (spring or summer), sediment texture and organic matter content, water depth, pH, salinity (TDS) and the presence of aquatic plants ( plant cover) were considered in the matrix involving species dry weight biomass at each of 117 stations. TWINSPAN classification of the samples yielded a dendrogram with 18 indicator species. Successive dichotomies divided these indicator species into four main lake groups based on salinity, i.e., Group I: 3–10 (Gammarus, Glyptotendipes I, Chironomus cf. plumosus), Group II: 10–38%. (Hyalella, Enallagma,Bezzia), Group III: 38–63 (Hygrotus salinarius, Cricotopus ornatus), Group IV: >63 (Dolichopodidae, Ephydra hians). Each of these main groups was subdivided into smaller groups of lakes based on factors such as pH, seasonality (spring or summer species dominance), organic matter and plant cover. Lake Gallocanta has undergone drastic changes during the last thirteen years. Water level changed from a high level (Zmax = 2 m) to total dryness in 1985. From 1986 to 1988 slow refilling occurred. The water volume fluctuations have been studied in relation to climatic variations recorded for that period. Variations in the major dissolved ions were related to water volume fluctuations from data at two different stages, one corresponding to the drying phase and another to the refilling phase. Mineralogical composition of the salts precipitated at different stages was examined by X-ray diffraction. Interstitial water and mineralogical composition of recent sediments were also studied along a transect through the lake.The water column decrease from 1977 to 1985 is related to decreasing annual rainfall (500-250 mm respectively). The refilling in 1986–1988 is due to high annual rainfall (537 mm). In addition to these fluctuations, seasonal changes of the water level between 20 and 50 cm occurred every year.Gallocanta is a Na-Mg-Cl-(SO4) type lake. During the drying period a typical salt enrichment occurs with linear relationships between TDS, Cl, Na and K. Alkalinity is linearly correlated with Ca at relatively low salinities. As salinity increases a linear relationship between Ca and SO4 is observed. Minerals formed from the brine are halite, bischofite, epsomite, hexahydrite, mirabilite, gypsum, aragonite, calcite and dolomite. The molar ratio Mg/Ca of the interstitial water changes from 1.5 along the shorelines, where calcite and aragonite precipitate, to 40 in the center of the lake. Sediment cores from the central part of the lake show aragonite in the top layers, magnesian calcite and low proportions of quartz and illite, while at 20 cm depth a high proportion of gypsum is present. In contrast, cores from the shore of the lake are mainly composed of low magnesium calcite in the top layers and low magnesium calcite together high magnesium calcite and dolomite between 30 and 70 cm depth. Gypsum deposits only occur in significant proportions at 80–100 cm depth.The refilling process showed relationships between volume and salt concentration following the Langbein model. The salt mass in solution decreased about 50% from the drying to the refilling phase. However, Mg content decreased about 70 % for the same period, suggesting a contribution of this element to the dolomite formation.  相似文献

A Drosophila genomic DNA library in the vector Charon 4 was screened using cDNA derived from the small (6S-12S) poly(A)+ mRNA of 2-6-h-old Drosophila embryos. This fraction of mRNA is enriched for ribosomal protein-coding sequences. The selected recombinants were hybridized to total mRNA under conditions which allowed for isolation of homologous mRNAs. The mRNA from these RNA/DNA hybrids was eluted and translated in vitro. The translation products were analyzed by one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis with authentic ribosomal proteins as standards. One cloned DNA segment was found to contain a ribosomal protein gene, and a sequence which hybridizes strongly to at least 5 other ribosomal protein mRNAs.  相似文献

Abstract: The activities of pyruvate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase, and choline acetyltransferase in rat brain synaptosomes increased during on-togenesis by 3 and 14 times, respectively. Activity of ATP-citrate lyase decreased by 26% during the same period. Pyruvate consumption by synapto-somes from 1-day-old animals was 40% lower than that found in older rats; however, citrate efflux from intrasynaptosomal mitochondria in immature synaptosomes was over twice as high as that in mature ones. The rates of production of synaptoplasmic acetyl-CoA, ATP-citrate lyase were 1.03, 1.40, and 0.49 nmol/min/mg protein in 1-, 10-day-old, and adult rats, respectively. 3-Bromopyruvate (0.5 m M ) inhibited pyruvate consumption by 70% and caused a complete block of citrate utilization by citrate lyase in every age group. Parameters of citrate metabolism in cerebellar synaptosomes were the same as those in cerebral ones. These data indicate that production of acetyl-CoA. from citrate in synaptoplasm may be regulated either by adaptative, age-dependent changes in permeability and carrier capacity of the mitochondrial membrane or by the inhibition of synthesis of intramitochondrial acetyl-CoA. ATP-citrate lyase activity is not a rate-limiting factor in this process. Metabolic fluxes of pyruvate to cytoplasmic citrate and acetyl-CoA. are presumably the same in both cholinergic and noncholinergic nerve endings. The significance of citrate release from intrasynaptosomal mitochondria as a regulatory step in acetylcholine synthesis is discussed.  相似文献

A UV-sensitive mutant, Q31, isolated from mouse-lymphoma L5178Y cells, was studied for excision and post-replication rerpairs. A nearly equal number of UV endonuclease-sensitive sites was induced by UV in L5178Y, Q31, and human Raji cells. L5178Y cells irradiated with 10 J/m2 removed 18% of sensitive sites from DNA during incubation for 24 h, and Q31 cells removed 3% of the sites, a fraction less than the limit of detection, whereas Raji cells eliminated about 60% of the sites. These results indicate that mouse-lymphoma cells are capable of excision repair to a limited extend as compared with human cells and that mutant Q31 cells are essentially devoid of dimer excision. The newly synthesized DNA was of smaller size in UV-irradiated and unirradiated Q31 cells than that in the corresponding L5178Y cells, but the DNAs in both strains increased to comparable sizes after a 2-h chase.  相似文献
