We analyzed the distribution of intermediate filament molecular markers, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and vimentin in the brain and spinal cord of the adult brown anole lizard, Anolis sagrei. The GFAP immunoreactivity is strong and the positive structures are basically represented by fibers of different lengths and thicknesses which are arranged in a regular radial pattern throughout the central nervous system. In the brain regions that have a thicker neural wall, the radial orientation is not so evident as in the thinner areas. These fibers emerge from radial ependymoglia (tanycytes) whose cell bodies are generally GFAP-immunopositive. The glial fibers give rise to endfeet that are apposed to the subpial surface and to blood vessel walls. In the spinal cord, the optic tectum and the lateroventral regions of the mesencephalon and medulla oblongata, star-shaped astrocytes coexist with radial structures. Vimentin-immunoreactive structures are absent in the brain and spinal cord. In A. sagrei the immunohistochemical response of the astroglial intermediate filaments appears typical of a mature astroglial cell lineage, since they fundamentally express GFAP immunoreactivity. A Western-blot analysis reveals a GFAP-positive single band, common to the different nervous areas. This immunohistochemical study shows that the star-shaped astrocytes have a different distribution in saurians and while the glial pattern of A. sagrei is more evolved than in urodeles it remains immature as compared with crocodilians, avians, and mammals. This condition suggests that reptiles represent a fundamental step in the phylogenetic evolution of the vertebrate glial cells.  相似文献

Analysis of placentation in the final stages of development in Mabuya mabouya shows that the placenta is formed by the apposition of the chorioallantois to the uterine mucosa implicating the entire embryonic chamber, because the allantoic vesicle invades all the exocoelom. The chorioallantoic placenta presents the features proper of a type IV allantoplacenta. However, in the mesometrial area peripheral to the placentome, we found that the paraplacentome is an additional zone specialized for histotrophic transfer, and is separated from the rest of the embryonic chamber by a chorionic invagination formed of polymorphic cells. The chorionic areolae are components of the embryonic hemisphere; they are in apposition to an endometrium with columnar epithelial cells and several glands that secrete toward the cavity of the areolae. They are observed only in the preparturition stage, probably operating in maternal-fetal transfer of nutrients during the last embryonic growth stage. The mesometrial hemisphere possesses specializations related to histotrophic nutrition (placentome, paraplacentome, and chorionic areolae), while in the abembryonic hemisphere there is an allantoplacenta of mixed function, with capacity for histotrophic nutrition and for gas exchange. The absorptive plaques are small rounded areas constituted by chorionic cells similar to the paraplacentomal chorionic cells, in intimate apposition with a secretory uterine epithelium. Separating the absorptive plaques are respiratory segments histologically similar to the type I allantoplacenta. The additional histotrophic areas found for this species demonstrate the great specialization of this allantoplacenta, and support the highest degree of matrotrophy among reptiles reached in the Neotropical Mabuya.  相似文献

Aim To delimit the distribution of matrilines of the black iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata), detect potential contact zones between them, and test the hypothesis of geographic concordance in the structuring of matrilines with respect to genetic structuring across the nuclear genome. Location Pacific coast of Mexico in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán in the lowlands adjacent to the western end of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Methods Tissue samples were obtained every 10–20 km along a transect across the range of three previously described mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) clades of C. pectinata. Iguanas were genotyped with 11 nuclear microsatellites and maternal lineages were inferred based on mtDNA sequences. Geographic structure and geographic concordance between biparentally and maternally inherited markers were analysed with clustering methods, FST and NST indexes as well as haplotype networks. Results Geographic structure was evident for both markers and the existence of contact zones confirmed. Nevertheless, the distribution of nuclear and mtDNA genetic variation is not geographically concordant. Four matrilines exist in the area, whereas only two nuclear clusters occur. A contact zone between nuclear clusters extends along a distance of c. 60 km, and introgression is evident in individuals from several localities. Main conclusions High levels of genetic diversity were detected on the western coast of Mexico. Historical and contemporaneous processes seem to shape the distribution of genetic variation in C. pectinata. There are no evident geographic, environmental or ecological barriers that coincide with genetic subdivisions, and the observed mtDNA structure is likely to be the result of past climatic changes. The less structured distribution of nuclear genetic variation is consistent with the homogenizing effect of male‐biased dispersal. Our findings have implications for the taxonomy and conservation strategies for this threatened species, and highlight the fact that geographic analyses of both cytoplasmic and nuclear genetic variation are important for the meaningful inference of evolutionary and demographic histories.  相似文献

Biotic homogenization reduces the regional distinctiveness of biotas with significant ecological and evolutionary consequences. The outcome of this process may depend on the spatial scale of inquiry (both resolution and extent), the selected taxon and dissimilarity index as well as on the contribution of species extinctions and introductions. In the present research, we try to disentangle the effects of these factors on homogenization patterns comparing six taxonomic groups (pteridophytes, spermatophytes, breeding birds, mammals, reptiles and non-marine molluscs) within and between five Atlantic archipelagos of the Macaronesian Region. Taxonomic homogenization was analyzed by partitioning β-diversity into spatial turnover of species composition and nestedness. Total compositional change was divided into changes related to extinctions/extirpations of native and to introductions of alien species. Analyses were carried out at two different spatial resolutions (island versus archipelago unit) and geographic extents (within each archipelago and across the whole Macaronesian Region). Pteridophytes and reptiles tended to taxonomic differentiation, while mammals and molluscs showed homogenization regardless of scale and resolution. For spermatophytes, the most species-rich group, taxonomic heterogenization traded off with homogenization from the local to regional extent. Birds revealed heterogenization at the island, but not at the archipelago resolution. Extirpations of native species generally led to homogenization at the local extent, whereas the effect of alien introductions varied according to taxon and spatial scale. Furthermore, overall changes in species pool similarities were driven both by spatial turnover and nestedness. We demonstrate that biotic homogenization after human colonization within Macaronesia clearly depended on taxon, spatial scale and the dissimilarity measure. We suggest that homogenization of island biotas is first conditioned by initial dissimilarity related to taxon characteristics, such as dispersal capacity or endemicity, evolutionary processes, archipelago configurations and environmental variation along spatial scales. Thus, similarity change is the outcome of the impacts of number, proportion and distribution type of lost and gained species. Rare extirpated and common introduced species homogenize, while common extirpated and rare introduced species differentiate island biotas. Partitioning of beta diversity helps to improve our understanding of the homogenization process.  相似文献

Aim East Africa is one of the most biologically diverse regions, especially in terms of endemism and species richness. Hypotheses put forward to explain this high diversity invoke a role for forest refugia through: (1) accumulation of new species due to radiation within refugial habitats, or (2) retention of older palaeoendemic species in stable refugia. We tested these alternative hypotheses using data for a diverse genus of East African forest chameleons, Kinyongia. Location East Africa. Methods We constructed a dated phylogeny for Kinyongia using one nuclear and two mitochondrial markers. We identified areas of high phylogenetic diversity (PD) and evolutionary diversity (ED), and mapped ancestral areas to ascertain whether lineage diversification could best be explained by vicariance or dispersal. Results Vicariance best explains the present biogeographic patterns, with divergence between three major Kinyongia clades (Albertine Rift, southern Eastern Arc, northern Eastern Arc) in the early Miocene/Oligocene (> 20 Ma). Lineage diversification within these clades pre‐dates the Pliocene (> 6 Ma). These dates are much older than the Plio‐Pleistocene climatic shifts associated with cladogenesis in other East African taxa (e.g. birds), and instead point to a scenario whereby palaeoendemics are retained in refugia, rather than more recent radiations within refugia. Estimates of PD show that diversity was highest in the Uluguru, Nguru and East Usambara Mountains and several lineages (from Mount Kenya, South Pare and the Uluguru Mountains) stand out as being evolutionarily distinct as a result of isolation in forest refugia. PD was lower than expected by chance, suggesting that the phylogenetic signal is influenced by an unusually low number of extant lineages with long branch lengths, which is probably due to the retention of palaeoendemic lineages. Main conclusions The biogeographic patterns associated with Kinyongia are the result of long evolutionary histories in isolation. The phylogeny is dominated by ancient lineages whose origins date back to the early Miocene/Oligocene as a result of continental wide forest fragmentation and contraction due to long term climatic changes in Africa. The maintenance of palaeoendemic lineages in refugia has contributed substantially to the remarkably high biodiversity of East Africa.  相似文献

Here we described a series of ammonoid specimens from the Early Triassic of Chaohu, South China and recognized the occurrence of Procolumbites for the first time in this area. The Procolumbites layer is about one meter above the first appearance of Chaohusaurus, indicating that the oldest Chaohusaurus is within the Procolumbites Zone of middle Spathian age. This new age constrain is significantly older than the previously suggested Subcolumbites Zone assignment (early late Spathian). To date, Chaohusaurus is the oldest known ichthyopterygian.  相似文献

Autotomy, the self‐amputation of limbs or appendages, is a dramatic anti‐predator tactic that has repeatedly evolved in a range of invertebrate and vertebrate groups. In lizards, caudal autotomy enables the individual to break away from the predator's grasp, with the post‐autotomy thrashing of the tail distracting the attacker while the lizard makes its escape. This drastic defensive strategy should be selectively advantageous when the benefit (i.e. survival) exceeds the subsequent costs associated with tail loss. Here, we highlight how the position of autotomy along the length of the tail may influence the costs and benefits of the tactic, and thus the adaptive advantage of the strategy. We argue that most studies of caudal autotomy in lizards have focused on complete tail loss and failed to consider variation in the amount of tail shed, and, therefore, our understanding of this anti‐predator behaviour is more limited than previously thought. We suggest that future research should investigate how partial tail loss influences the likelihood of surviving encounters with a predator, and both the severity and duration of costs associated with caudal autotomy. Investigation of partial autotomy may also enhance our understanding of this defensive strategy in other vertebrate and invertebrate groups.  相似文献

Mutualistic interactions involving pollination and ant-plant mutualistic networks typically feature tightly linked species grouped in modules. However, such modularity is infrequent in seed dispersal networks, presumably because research on those networks predominantly includes a single taxonomic animal group (e.g. birds). Herein, for the first time, we examine the pattern of interaction in a network that includes multiple taxonomic groups of seed dispersers, and the mechanisms underlying modularity. We found that the network was nested and modular, with five distinguishable modules. Our examination of the mechanisms underlying such modularity showed that plant and animal trait values were associated with specific modules but phylogenetic effect was limited. Thus, the pattern of interaction in this network is only partially explained by shared evolutionary history. We conclude that the observed modularity emerged by a combination of phylogenetic history and trait convergence of phylogenetically unrelated species, shaped by interactions with particular types of dispersal agents.  相似文献
