A quantitative triterpene analysis was made of latex stem tissue of Euphorbia lathyris. Young plants seedlings of E. lathyris were incubated with various labelled precursors. Incorporation into triterpenes was obtained from [2-14C]mevalonic acid, [1-14C]acetate, [3-14C]pyruvate, [U-14C]sucrose, [U-14C]glucose, [U-14C]xylose, [U-14C]glyoxylate, [2,3-14C]succinic acid, [1-14C]glycerol [U-14C]serine. Both sugars tyrosine appeared to be effective precursors in DOPA synthesis inside the laticifers. Exogenously supplied mevalonic acid was only involved in triterpene synthesis outside the laticifers. GC-RC of triterpenes synthesized from [U-14C]glucose revealed the origin of these compounds in the latex. The labelled triterpenes obtained after incorporation of the other mentioned labelled precursors were only partly synthesized in the laticifers. For quantitative data on latex triterpene synthesis seedlings were incubated with [U-14C]sucrose, [U-14C]glucose, [U-14C]xylose [1-14C]acetate in the presence of increasing amounts of unlabelled substrate. From the amount of 14C incorporated into the triterpenes the amount of substrate directly involved in triterpene synthesis was calculated, as was the absolute triterpene yield. Sucrose showed the highest triterpene yield, equivalent to the daily increase of the triterpene content of growing seedlings. The possible significance of the other precursors in triterpene synthesis in the laticifers is discussed.  相似文献

Three nuclear polyhedrosis viruses isolated from larvae of the insect genus Choristoneura showed polyhedrins of 28–30,000 daltons, genome sizes of 78–82 × 106 daltons, and guanine plus cytosine contents of 47.9–49.4%. The possibility was considered that osmotic adjustment, the ability to accumulate solutes in response to water stress, may contribute to growth rate differences among closely-related genotypes of trees. Progeny variation in osmotic adjustment and turgor regulation was investigated by comparing changes in osmotic and pressure potentials, soluble carbohydrates, and amino acids in osmotically stressed seedlings in 4 full-sib progenies of black spruce [ Picea mariana (Mill.) B. S. P.] that differed in growth rate under drought. Osmotic stress was induced by a stepwise increase in the concentration of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-3350 from 10 (w/v) to 18 and 25%, which provided osmotic potentials in solution culture of -0.4, -1.0 and -2.0 MPa each for 3 days. All 4 progenies maintained a positive cell turgor even at 25% PEG, due to a significant decline in osmotic potential. Although total amino acids, principally proline, increased, ca 60% of the decrease in osmotic potential was attributable to soluble carbohydrates and glucose was the major osmoregulating solute. There was little progeny variation in any of measured parameters in unstressed seedlings. Compared to two slower-growing progenies, the two progenies capable of more vigorous growth under drought in the field accumulated more soluble carbohydrates (mainly glucose and fructose), developed lower osmotic potential and maintained higher turgor pressure when osmotically-stressed in solution culture. The ability to adjust osmotically and maintain turgor under drought stress could thus be a useful criterion for the early selection of faster-growing, drought-tolerant genotypes.  相似文献

The susceptibility of sorghum to the shoot fly Atherigona soccata Rondani, (Diptera: Muscidae) is affected by seedling age and is highest when seedlings are 8–12 days old. This corresponds with high moisture accumulation on the central leaf which is the path of newly hatched larva as it moves downwards from the oviposition site, towards the growing apex. Studies showed that leaf surface wetness (LSW) of the central shoot leaf was higher in 10-day old seedlings than in seedlings of other ages. Similarly, LSW was much higher in the susceptible sorghum genotype CSH 1 than in the resistant genotype IS 2146. Larvae moved faster towards the growing point and produced deadhearts much earlier in CSH 1 than in IS 2146. They also moved faster in 10-day old seedlings than in seedlings of other ages. It was also shown that the leaf surface wetness of the central shoot leaf is a more reliable parameter of resistance than the glossy leaf trait or trichome density.
L'influence de la humidité de la surface foliaire sur le comportement de la mouche des pousses du sorgho
Résumé La sensibilité du sorgho à la mouche des pousses du sorgho, Atherigona soccata Rondani, est liée à l'âge de la plantule. Elle est plus forte lorsque la plantule est âgée de 8 à 12 jours et la sensibilité est maximale à 10 jours. A ce stade de croissance on observe une forte accumulation d'humidité sur la feuille centrale de la tige. Les jeunes larves traversent cette zone humide lorsqu'elles descendent vers la zone de croissance à partir des pontes déposées sur la face ventrale des feuilles déroulées.Des études ont été menées à l'ICRISAT (Inde) sur la relation entre l'humidité de la feuille centrale de la tige des plantules du sorgho et les dégâts provoqués par la mouche des pousses. L'humidité de la surface des feuilles (HSF) a été estimée grâce à une échelle visuelle graduée 1 à 5 où, 1 = pas d'humidité apparente et 5 = surface de la feuille recouverte de gouttes d'eau. La HSF est plus élevée sur des pousses de sorgho âgées de 10 j que sur les pousses appartenant à d'autres classes d'âge. Les valeurs observées sont également plus fortes pour les variétés non résistantes à ce ravageur (CSH 1,4.8) que pour les variétés résistantes (IS 2146, (2)). La vitesse du déplacement larvaire entre le cornet et la zone de la croissance varie en fonction de l'âge de la plante et des cultivars. Les larves migrent plus rapidement vers la zone de croissance et provoquent la mort du coeur du sorgho plus tôt dans la variété CSH 1 que dans IS 2146. Les larves se déplacent plus rapidement dans les pousses âgées de 10 j que dans les pousses appartenant à d'autres classes d'âge.Des études ont également démontré que la HSF n'est pas directement liée au caractère feuille lisse où à la densité des trichomes. La HSF est faible pour les génotypes résistants présentent où non le caractère feuille lisse. Par contre la HSF est élevée pour les génotypes non résistants présentant le caractère feuille lisse ou non. Aucune relation directe entre la densité des trichomes et les dégâts provoqués par la mouche des pousses n'a pu être mise en évidence. L'analyse des correlations établie pour les caractères de surface des feuilles avec la mort du cur des sorghos indique que les correlations sont faibles et non-significatives pour le caractère feuille lisse (0.49) et la densité des trichomes (0.39 et 0.2). Par contre les correlations sont fortes et significatives pour la HSF (0.82).On conclue que la HSF de la feuille centrale de la tige est un facteur important dans le déterminisme de la résistance du sorgho vis à vis de la mouche des pousses. Les relations entre les processus physiologiques de la plante et les facteurs impliquées dans l'accumulation d'eau sur la surface des feuilles font actuellement l'objet d'études détaillées.

Comparisons of volatile oil constituents were made among samples of juvenile foliage collected from 78 Juniperus virginiana and 28 J. scopulorum seedling sources growing in a “common garden” environment. A canonical variate analysis, a principal coordinates analysis and hybrid distance diagrams of 30 chemical characters indicate both taxa are good species and that they exhibit clinical patterns in the Great Plains. In addition, a possible evoluitonary link between present-day J. virginiana populations in southern Texas and ancient J. scopulorum populations is indicated.  相似文献

Abstract Effect of ammonium on in vivo activity of nitrate reductase in roots, shoots and leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings was studied in relation to light/dark conditions and EDTA supply. Supply of 5 mM (NH4)2SO4 increased the steady state level of enzyme only in leaves and in light, while it had no effect in roots and shoots and in the dark. The substrate induction of enzyme was also little affected by 1 to 10 mM (NH4)2SO4 in roots and shoots. In the leaves the activity in the dark was either inhibited (minus EDTA) or stimulated (plus EDTA) by 5 to 10 mM (NH4)2SO4. The activity was stimulated in the light also in the presence of EDTA at higher concentrations of ammonium. When different concentrations of ammonium were supplied without any exogenous nitrate in the light, the enzyme activity increased at low concentration and was either inhibited or unaffected at higher concentrations depending upon the tissue used. Supply of EDTA with ammonium modified its effect to some extent. It is suggested that the effect of ammonium on nitrate reductase activity depends upon the tissue used and the effective concentration of the ammonium.  相似文献

In the ectomycorrhizal caesalpiniaceous groves of southern Korup National Park, the dominant tree species, Microberlinia bisulcata, displays very poor in situ recruitment compared with its codominant, Tetraberlinia bifoliolata. The reported ex situ experiment tested whether availabilities of soil potassium and magnesium play a role. Seedlings of the two species received applications of K and Mg fertilizer in potted native soil in a local shade house, and their responses in terms of growth and nutrient concentrations were recorded over 2 years. Amended soil concentrations were also determined. Microberlinia responded strongly and positively in its growth to Mg, but less to K; Tetraberlinia responded weakly to both. Added Mg led to strongly increased Mg concentration for Microberlinia while added K changed that concentration only slightly; Tetraberlinia strongly increased its concentration of K with added K, but only somewhat its Mg concentration with added Mg. Additions of Mg and K had small but important antagonistic effects. Microberlinia is Mg‐demanding and apparently Mg‐limited in Korup soil; Tetraberlinia, whilst K‐demanding, appeared not to be K‐limited (for growth). Added K enhanced plant P concentrations of both species. Extra applied Mg may also be alleviating soil aluminum toxicity, and hence improving growth indirectly and especially to the benefit of Microberlinia. Mg appears to be essential for Microberlinia seedling growth and its low soil availability in grove soils at Korup may be an important contributing factor to its poor recruitment. Microberlinia is highly shade‐intolerant and strongly light‐responding, whilst Tetraberlinia is more shade‐tolerant and moderately light‐responding, which affords an interesting contrast with respect to their differing responses to Mg supply. The study revealed novel aspects of functional traits and likely niche‐partitioning among ectomycorrhizal caesalps in African rain forests. Identifying the direct and interacting indirect effects of essential elements on tropical tree seedling growth presents a considerable challenge due the complex nexus of causes involved.  相似文献
