Multivariate statistical analysis has been applied to time series measurements of aerosol elemental composition from PIXE
analysis of filter samples, and principal components have been resolved that represent distinct particle types in an external
mixture in the atmosphere. In this study, it is argued that a combination of chemical and statistical analyses of the data
may be more powerful in determining chemical species in atmospheric aerosols than studies that employ mainly direct chemical
analysis of chemical species in unresolved mixtures of aerosol particle samples. Sulfur is generally associated with mineral
dust elements. It is reasoned that the association may represent sulfuric acid coatings on particles that can lead to mineral
dissolution and solubilization of significant amounts of aluminum, iron, and other metals.
Upon wet or dry deposition to the surface, the fluxes of these metals in biologically-available form may be sufficient to
affect primary productivity in the world ocean and cause ecological damage in lakes. As a consequence, the fluxes of biogenic
trace gases to the atmosphere may be changed, possibly leading to changes in the tropospheric concentration of ozone. The
inputs to lakes of soluble aluminum, which is toxic to fish, may be partly by deposition directly from the atmosphere, thus
not limited to leaching of soils by acid deposition. Human inhalation of soluble aluminum and other solulilized mineral metals
may account, in part, for the observed geographic pattern of deaths attributed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
that show high rates in cities of the Western US and the southeast region, but low in most of the midwest and northeast. 相似文献

Two new facilities for in vivo activation analysis of patients have been designed, developed, and constructed at Toronto General
Hospital. One of these is for the determination of body calcium for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and other diseases associated
with bone loss. The other is for the measurement of total body nitrogen for the determination of protein status.
These facilities replace old university facilities and take into account the comfort and management of patients. In addition,
in the case of the calcium facility, the precision of the measurements has been improved because of larger detector volume

Iron-dependent formation of ferredoxin and flavodoxin was determined in Anabaena ATCC 29413 and ATCC 29211 by a FPLC procedure. In the first species ferredoxin is replaced by flavodoxin at low iron levels in the vegetative cells only. In the heterocysts from Anabaena ATCC 29151, however, flavodoxin is constitutively formed regardless of the iron supply.Replacement of ferredoxin by flavodoxin had no effect on photosynthetic electron transport, whereas nitrogen fixation was decreased under low iron conditions. As ferredoxin and flavodoxin exhibited the same Km values as electron donors to nitrogenase, an iron-limited synthesis of active nitrogenase was assumed as the reason for inhibited nitrogen fixation. Anabaena ATCC 29211 generally lacks the potential to synthesize flavodoxin. Under iron-starvation conditions, ferredoxin synthesis is limited, with a negative effect on photosynthetic oxygen evolution. 相似文献

High light treatments were given to attached leaves of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) at room temperature and at 1°C where the diffusion- and enzyme-dependent repair processes of Photosystem II are at a minimum. After treatments, electron transfer activities and fluorescence induction were measured from thylakoids isolated from the treated leaves. When the photoinhibition treatment was given at 1°C, the Photosystem II electron transfer assays that were designed to require electron transfer to the plastoquinone pool showed greater inhibition than electron transfer from H2O to paraphenyl-benzoquinone, which measures all PS II centers. When the light treatment was given at room temperature, electron transfer from H2O to paraphenyl-benzoquinone was inhibited more than whole-chain electron transfer. Variable fluorescence measured in the presence of ferricyanide decreased only during room-temperature treatments. These results suggest that reaction centers of one pool of Photosystem II, non-QB-PS II, replace photoinhibited reaction centers at room temperature, while no replacement occurs at 1°C. A simulation of photoinhibition at 1°C supports this conclusion.Abbreviations BSA

An epithermal neutron activation method is used to determine the concentration of mineral elements in human dental enamel.
A large number (252) of samples from ancient and modern origins are analyzed. The analytical results are mathematically processed
using a statistical multivariant method. This allows to differentiate deciduous from permanent teeth and decayed from sound
enamel. It is also possible to distinguish the teeth coming from two different necropoles. The origin and the localization
of determined elements in the mineralized part, or in the aqueous-organic part, of enamel is suggested. Their role, as witnessed

The ontogeny of cranial sexual dimorphism in the Bornean orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) is examined by means of principal-components analysis (PCA). Normalized first components are called allometry vectors or vectors of relative growth and show that sexual dimorphism is present at all stages of growth. Two patterns of sexual dimorphism are present: (1) sexual differences at age groups 2 and 3 are the result primarily of differences in principal component II scores, reflecting mainly shape-related differences, and (2) age groups 5, 6, and 7 show a trend of stronger size-related shape differences with increasing age in the allometry vector along with decreasing differences in principal component II scores, reflecting an increase in size-related shape differences between the sexes. Age group 4 shows a combination of both patterns. Our results support Shea's hypothesis (1985a) that when using multigroup PCAs in closely related taxa, the allometry vector will generally estimate the shape variation resulting from the extension of common growth allometry patterns (ontogenetic scaling). The second and subsequent components summarize shape variation from slope and intercept differences between the groups, provided that ontogenetic scaling is not solely responsible for all the shape differences present. Subanalyses of those dimensions previously found to show ontogenetic scaling and acceleration follow this pattern well. The total sample provides a pattern whereby ontogenetically scaled dimensions possess a stronger influence over accelerated dimensions but still generally follow Shea's hypothesis. Finally, variously derived coefficients provided several interesting findings: (1) strong evidence was found against multivariate isometry for both the pooled and the separate samples, (2) multivariate allometric coefficients for both sexes follow the general growth pattern of negative scaling in neurocranial dimensions and positive scaling in the viscerocranium, and (3) multivariate slopes have a very high correlation with bivariate slopes relative to the same independent X variable, thereby lending further support to Jolicoeur's (1963a, b) allometry generalization. 相似文献

Disks were isolated from young leaves of winter rape plants and grown in vitro at ambient (15°C) or low (2°C) temperatures for two weeks. In the control disks the growth cessation and beginning of chlorophyll degradation were observed after 1 week of culture. In the low-temperature treated disks the expansion of cells was slower than that in the control material but it continued for two weeks and was accompanied by a marked accumulation of dry matter. Practically, no chlorophyll degradation was observed. The low temperature treatment brought about the decrease in the frost killing temperature of the tissue which was associated with its increased capacity to subcool water. A short (18 h) exposure of the cold-grown leaf disks to slight frost (–5°C) increased further their resistance to freezing, despite the fact that the subcooling capacity of disks decreased in result of the treatment. Therefore, the two stages of hardening, observed previously for the whole plants, can also be detected in the isolated material. In the cold-grown disks, a transient accumulation of reducing sugars but a steady decrease in ATP and water-soluble protein contents were observed. These observations indicate that tissue isolation might affect processes involved in the functional adaptation of cells to cold.Abbreviations DTA

Summary Anoxia tolerance, glycogen degradation, free amino acid pool, adenylate energy charge and the accumulation and excretion of end products were monitored inLumbriculus variegatus Müller throughout 48 h of anoxia. A transition period lasting about 4 h could be distinguished from subsequent events during which malate, present in high amounts in the resting animals, is utilized, probably by conversion to succinate. Up to the 12th hour of anoxia there is an increase in concentration of free amino acids, except aspartate. Glutamate increases rapidly during the first half hour but decreases thereafter. Beginning with the second hour of anoxia the alanine concentration increases at the same rate glutamate concentration decreases, but the source of nitrogen during the first hour is unknown. It is argued that the nitrogen required for the synthesis of some of the amino acids is ultimately derived from proteolysis. After about 3 h of anoxia propionate and acetate are synthesized. At first these acids accumulate in the tissues, but after 4–6 h they are excreted into the surrounding medium. Acetate is excreted over the whole experimental period at a constant rate, whereas the excretion rate of propionate decreases slowly with time. The propionate/acetate ratio is in excess of 2. Classic malate dismutation is by far the most important mechanism in the maintenance of redox balance. Depletion of glycogen stores appears to play an important role in determining anoxic survival time. Due to extremely low activity of PEPCK the ratio of the specific activities of PK and PEPCK is very high. Further, the kinetic properties of pyruvate kinase do not support the assumption of a shift of the glycolytic carbon flow at the PEP level.Abbreviations
