The circadian rhythm in growth of the red macroalga Porphyra umbilicalis (Linnaeus) J. Agardh was investigated under different spectral light conditions in laboratory-grown thalli. A free-running rhythm was observed in constant green or red light at irradiances of 2.5 to 20 μmol photons·m−2 ·s−1 , whereas arhythmicity occurred in constant blue light at 6–20 μmol photons·m−2 ·s−1 . The circadian oscillator controlling growth rhythmicity in Porphyra uses most of the visible sunlight spectrum and possibly multiple photoreceptors with a high sensitivity for blue light and a lower sensitivity for red light. This was inferred from three experimental results: (1) The free-running period, τ, of the growth rhythm decreased with increasing irradiance, from approximately 25 h at 2.5 μmol photons·m−2 ·s−1 to 22 h at 20 μmol photons·m−2 ·s−1 in red or green light, (2) Dark pulses of 3 h duration, interrupting otherwise continuous green or red light, caused advances during the subjective day and delays during the subjective night; the circadian oscillator in Porphyra can discriminate darkness from green or red light, and (3) Low-irradiance blue light pulses (2.5 μmol photons·m−2 ·s−1 ) shifted the growth rhythm in red light of higher irradiance (e.g. 10 μmol photons·m−2 ·s−1 ), and a strong, high amplitude, type 0 phase response curve was obtained that is usually observed with light pulses shifting a circadian rhythm in otherwise continuous darkness. 相似文献

Movement of air under the canopy of a forest affects the gliding of animals such as frogs, snakes, geckos, and squirrels; the dispersal of pollen, seeds, and spores; as well as convective transport of heat and carbon dioxide. Wind speed profiles were measured under the canopy of a lowland rain forest during the morning, afternoon, and night at three sites in Costa Rica to determine the aerodynamic environment in which tree frogs maneuver while gliding. During the course of a day, average and maximum wind speeds were highest in the morning and midday, and lowest at night. Wind speeds under the canopy were highest near the top of the canopy and were lowest near the canopy floor in the morning and afternoon, and exhibited little variation with respect to height at night. Turbulence intensity (a common measure of gustiness) was constant (ca 1) for all times of day, heights in the canopy, and sites, but the absolute magnitudes of wind gust speeds were higher during the day than at night. Power spectral densities revealed that most of the variation in wind speeds occurred at frequencies that could potentially affect the gliding of tree frogs. Tree frogs (and many other gliding animals), however, glide at night and thereby avoid the higher wind speeds that occur by day. Computer simulations of the dynamic motions of frogs while gliding revealed that the night levels of wind gusts have little effect on the direction of gliding of tree frogs. 相似文献

We implemented a non-contact photo-thermo-mechanical recording method whereby a silicon nitride atomic force microscopy cantilever is placed several micrometer above the surface of samples. Samples were illuminated with infrared (IR) radiation after which, cantilever mechanical vibrations were optically sensed. Following spectrometric acquisition and Fourier transformation, true IR absorption spectra were obtained. With multivariate analysis, segregation between different categories of exfoliative cervical cytology was obtained. Absorption and luminescence excitation and emission spectra of newly synthesized 2-(4-methylphenylimino)-3-(2 -benzothiazolyl)benz-alpha-chromene (BCBT) have been studied in the presence of various DNA concentrations. BCBT is characterized by the existence of two different fluorescent systems, exhibiting radiationless fluorescence resonance energy transfer between them. In the range of molar ratios of polynucleotide/dye concentrations from 0 to 50, BCBT preferentially intercalates into DNA due to its benz-alpha-chromene fragment, whereas the 2-benzothiazolyl fragment is responsible for fluorescence. 相似文献

Inosine monophosphate (IMP) and guanosine monophosphate (GMP) elicit an umami taste in humans and synergistically increase the intensity of the umami taste of monosodium glutamate (MSG). Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) studies in rodents indicate that these nucleotides and MSG elicit quite similar tastes, but recent physiological evidence suggests that these nucleotides and MSG may not activate the same population of taste receptors and therefore may not elicit identical taste qualities. This study reports the findings of several behavioral experiments with rats that compared the taste properties of IMP and GMP with each other and with those of MSG. Well-trained rats were able to detect both nucleotides at nanomolar concentrations, but they did not respond to either nucleotide in two-bottle preference tests or brief-access CTA tests at concentrations less than 0.5 mM. Discrimination experiments found that the tastes of these nucleotides could not be discriminated from each other, but both could be discriminated from MSG, even when the taste of Na(+) was controlled. Overall, these experiments indicate the taste properties of the two 5'-ribonucleotides are quite similar to each other, and even though they may elicit an umami sensation, these sensations are not identical to the taste of MSG. 相似文献

At present, molecular bases of spectral tuning in rhodopsin-like (RH2) pigments are not well understood. Here, we have constructed the RH2 pigments of nocturnal Tokay gecko (Gekko gekko) and diurnal American chameleon (Anolis carolinensis) as well as chimeras between them. The RH2 pigments of the gecko and chameleon reconstituted with 11-cis-retinal had the wavelengths of maximal absorption (lambda(max)'s) of 467 and 496 nm, respectively. Chimeric pigment analyses indicated that 76-86%, 14-24%, and 10% of the spectral difference between them could be explained by amino acid differences in transmembrane (TM) helices I-IV, V-VII, and amino acid interactions between the two segments, respectively. Evolutionary and mutagenesis analyses revealed that the lambda(max)'s of the gecko and chameleon pigments diverged from each other not only by S49A (serine to alanine replacement at residue 49), S49F (serine to phenylalanine), L52M (leucine to methionine), D83N (aspartic acid to asparagine), M86T (methionine to threonine), and T97A (threonine to alanine) but also by other amino acid replacements that cause minor lambda(max)-shifts individually. 相似文献

The evolution of complex signals may be favoured by hidden preferences or pre-existing sensory biases. Females of two species of grey treefrogs (Hyla chrysoscelis and Hyla versicolor) were tested with combinations of a conspecific advertisement call and acoustic appendages. Appendages consisted of aggressive calls and segments of advertisement calls from conspecific males and males of three other species and bursts of filtered noise. When a wide variety of these acoustic appendages followed the advertisement call, the resulting compound signal was often more attractive than the same advertisement call alone. When the same appendages led advertisement calls, however, the compound signal was never more attractive and sometimes less attractive. The order effect was especially strong in tests of H. versicolor in which advertisement-call duration was decreased. These results cannot be explained by a general pre-existing bias for extra stimulation per se. Rather, order and other effects may constrain the evolution and subsequent modification of complex and extravagant signals, examples of which have been reported for a wide range of taxa. 相似文献

实测了不同水肥耦合、经营制度及有效营养面积条件下的大豆(Glycinemax)冠层高光谱反射率与叶面积指数(LAI),并对光谱反射率、微分光谱与LAI的关系进行了分析;采用比值植被指数(RVI)与归一化植被指数(NDVI)建立了大豆LAI反演模型;采用小波分析对采集的光谱反射率数据进行了能量系数提取,并以小波能量系数作为自变量进行了单变量与多变量回归分析,对大豆LAI进行估算。结果表明:大豆LAI与光谱反射率在可见光波段呈负相关;在近红外波段呈正相关;微分光谱在红边处与大豆LAI密切相关(R2=0.92);RVI与NDVI可以提高大豆LAI的估算精度(R2分别达0.79、0.84);各植被指数各有优缺点,应根据需要进行选择;小波能量系数回归模型可以进一步提高大豆叶面积的估算水平,以一个特定小波能量系数作为自变量的回归模型,大豆LAI回归确定系数R2高达0.884;以4个和6个小波能量系数建立LAI回归分析模型(R2分别达0.92、0.93),2个模型LAI预测值与大豆LAI实测值线性回归确定性系数R2分别为0.90、0.92。比较可知,小波分析可以对高光谱进行特征变量提取,进而反演大豆生理参数,并且反演的LAI精度较光谱反射率、微分光谱及植被指数都有明显提高,小波分析在植被生理参数的高光谱提取方面有着广阔的应用前景。 相似文献

Previous studies suggest that facial preferences may be contingent on an individual's environment, yet no study has traced how the preferences of the same individuals change as their environment changes. We therefore sought to determine if, and to what extent, adiposity and masculinity preferences are malleable by repeatedly testing students whose environment was not changing as well as students undergoing intensive training at an army camp. Our results showed that at baseline, the students at the training camp preferred more feminine male faces. This suggests that even before the training commenced, participants in the training camp may have been in a psychological state that predisposed them to prefer more trustworthy (i.e., more feminine) men. Additionally, we found that the students at the training camp reported increases in multiple stressors as well as showed changes in adiposity preferences. More specifically, we found that increases in the harshness of the environment led to an increased male attraction to cues of higher weight in female faces. Such changes in preferences may be adaptive because they allow men more opportunities to mate with women who are better equipped to survive and reproduce. These findings thus provide new evidence for the malleability of preferences depending on the environment. 相似文献
