A 10-year monitoring program was developed to quantify the population dynamics of the long-snouted seahorse population in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon. Based on 985 underwater visual censuses, we estimated the long-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus Cuvier, 1829) population size in the Mar Menor lagoon and its reduction in size in the last decades, as well as the effect of eutrophication crises in 2016 and 2019 on the species. The annual recruitment for the 2013–2020 period was estimated by comparing the relative abundance of early seahorse life stages in the ichthyoplankton. The density ranged from 0.0458 specimens/m3 at the beginning of the sampling period to 0.0004 at the end, showing a statistically significant difference between the three analyzed periods (Hgl=2 = 14.0, p = 0.001). The long-snouted seahorse population from the Mar Menor lagoon exemplifies the impact of fishing activities and human pressure, especially euxinic episodes and habitat destruction. As a result of this, the Mar Menor population has decreased from several million specimens to a few thousand, in only three decades. This species showed considerable resilience, the seahorse population began to recover once fishing activity stopped. In contrast, the long-snouted seahorse showed high vulnerability to habitat loss and an episodic flooding event. Adult seahorses showed preferences for highly complex habitats, especially Caulerpa proliferaCymodocea nodosa mixed meadows and habitats of high complexity and anthropogenic origin, such as harbors, jetties, or breakwaters. In contrast, juvenile seahorses preferred monotonous seabeds with low complexity, such as the sandy beds that are characteristic of the Mar Menor lagoon littoral.  相似文献

Widespread drought‐induced forest mortality has been documented across multiple tree species in North America in recent decades, but it is a poorly understood component in terrestrial carbon (C) budgets. Recent severe drought in concert with elevated temperature likely triggered widespread forest mortality of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), the most widely distributed tree species in North America. The impact on the regional C budgets and spatial pattern of this drought‐induced tree mortality, which has been termed ‘sudden aspen decline (SAD)’, is not well known and could contribute to increased regional C emissions, an amplifying feedback to climate change. We conducted a regional assessment of drought‐induced live aboveground biomass (AGB) loss from SAD across 915 km2 of southwestern Colorado, USA, and investigated the influence of topography on the severity of mortality by combining field measures, remotely sensed nonphotosynthetically active vegetation and a digital elevation model. Mean [± standard deviation (SD)] remote sensing estimate of live AGB loss was 60.3 ± 37.3 Mg ha?1, which was 30.7% of field measured AGB, totaling 2.7 Tg of potential C emissions from this dieback event. Aspen forest health could be generally categorized as healthy (0–30% field measured canopy dieback), intermediate (31–50%), and SAD (51–100%), with the remote sensing estimated mean (± SD) live AGB losses of 26.4 ± 15.1, 64.5 ± 9.2, and 108.5 ± 24.0 Mg ha?1, respectively. There was a pronounced clustering pattern of SAD on south‐facing slopes due to relatively drier and warmer conditions, but no apparent spatial gradient was found for elevation and slope. This study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing remote sensing to assess the ramification of climate‐induced forest mortality on ecosystems and suggests promising opportunities for systematic large‐scale C dynamics monitoring of tree dieback, which would improve estimates of C budgets of North America with climate change.  相似文献

The SCO protein from the aerobic bacterium Bacillus subtilis (BsSCO) is involved in the assembly of the cytochrome c oxidase complex, and specifically with the CuA center. BsSCO has been proposed to play various roles in CuA assembly including, the direct delivery of copper ions to the CuA site, and/or maintaining the appropriate redox state of the cysteine ligands during formation of CuA. BsSCO binds copper in both Cu(II) and Cu(I) redox states, but has a million-fold higher affinity for Cu(II). As a prerequisite to kinetic studies, we measured equilibrium stability of oxidized, reduced and Cu(II)-bound BsSCO by chemical and thermal induced denaturation. Oxidized and reduced apo-BsSCO exhibit two-state behavior in both chemical- and thermal-induced unfolding. However, the Cu(II) complex of BsSCO is stable in up to nine molar urea. Thermal or guanidinium-induced unfolding of BsSCO-Cu(II) ensues only as the Cu(II) species is lost. The effect of copper (II) on the folding of BsSCO is complicated by a rapid redox reaction between copper and reduced, denatured BsSCO. When denatured apo-BsSCO is refolded in the presence of copper (II) some of the population is recovered as the BsSCO-Cu(II) complex and some is oxidized indicating that refolding and oxidation are competing processes. The proposed functional roles for BsSCO in vivo require that its cysteine residues are reduced and the presence of copper during folding may be detrimental to BsSCO attaining its functional state.  相似文献

Reliable identification of Aphidiinae species (Braconidae) is a prerequisite for conducting studies on aphid–parasitoid interactions at the community level. However, morphological identification of Aphidiinae species remains problematic even for specialists and is almost impossible with larval stages. Here, we compared the efficiency of two molecular markers [mitochondrial cytochrome c oxydase I (COI) and nuclear long wavelength rhodopsin (LWRh)] that could be used to accurately identify about 50 species of Aphidiinae that commonly occur in aphid–parasitoid networks in northwestern Europe. We first identified species on a morphological basis and then assessed the consistency of genetic and morphological data. Probably because of mitochondrial introgression, Aphidius ervi and A. microlophii were indistinguishable on the basis of their COI sequences, whereas LWRh sequences discriminated these species. Conversely, because of its lower variability, LWRh failed to discriminate two pairs of species (Aphidius aquilus, Aphidius salicis, Lysiphlebus confusus and Lysiphlebus fabarum). Our study showed that no unique locus but a combination of two genes should be used to accurately identify members of Aphidiinae.  相似文献

针对绿盲蝽Apolyguslucorum(Meyer-Dttr)6种主要寄主,分别于5~10叶期和花蕾期,采用室内“Y”型嗅觉仪和田间罩笼接虫方法,研究了绿盲蝽成虫对不同寄主及其挥发物的选择趋势。田间罩笼接虫试验结果表明:5—10叶期的茼蒿、国抗22及泗棉3号上绿盲蝽虫量居多,绿豆次之,大豆和豇豆上的较少;花蕾期的茼蒿、绿豆、国抗22及泗棉3号上绿盲蝽较多,而豇豆、大豆上较少。以5~10叶期和花蕾期的上述6种寄主为实验材料,以无寄主花盆为空白对照,每期各成对设置17个气源组合,采用室内“Y”型嗅觉仪测定绿盲蝽成虫对这6种寄主气源的选择趋性。不同气源组合测定结果表明,绿盲蝽对5—10叶期植物性气源的选择趋势为:国抗22〉茼蒿〉绿豆〉泗棉3号〉大豆〉豇豆;绿盲蝽对花蕾期植物性气源的选择趋势为:绿豆〉茼蒿〉国抗22〉泗棉3号〉豇豆〉大豆。上述不同选择性试验结果综合表明,绿盲蝽成虫对5—10叶期和花蕾期不同寄主的选择趋势基本一致。  相似文献

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) contains two clpP genes, both of which are essential for viability. We expressed and purified Mtb ClpP1 and ClpP2 separately. Although each formed a tetradecameric structure and was processed, they lacked proteolytic activity. We could, however, reconstitute an active, mixed ClpP1P2 complex after identifying N-blocked dipeptides that stimulate dramatically (>1000-fold) ClpP1P2 activity against certain peptides and proteins. These activators function cooperatively to induce the dissociation of ClpP1 and ClpP2 tetradecamers into heptameric rings, which then re-associate to form the active ClpP1P2 2-ring mixed complex. No analogous small molecule-induced enzyme activation mechanism involving dissociation and re-association of multimeric rings has been described. ClpP1P2 possesses chymotrypsin and caspase-like activities, and ClpP1 and ClpP2 differ in cleavage preferences. The regulatory ATPase ClpC1 was purified and shown to increase hydrolysis of proteins by ClpP1P2, but not peptides. ClpC1 did not activate ClpP1 or ClpP2 homotetradecamers and stimulated ClpP1P2 only when both ATP and a dipeptide activator were present. ClpP1P2 activity, its unusual activation mechanism and ClpC1 ATPase represent attractive drug targets to combat tuberculosis.  相似文献

Generalized reciprocity (help anyone, if helped by someone) is a minimal strategy capable of supporting cooperation between unrelated individuals. Its simplicity makes it an attractive model to explain the evolution of reciprocal altruism in animals that lack the information or cognitive skills needed for other types of reciprocity. Yet, generalized reciprocity is anonymous and thus defenseless against exploitation by defectors. Recognizing that animals hardly ever interact randomly, we investigate whether social network structure can mitigate this vulnerability. Our results show that heterogeneous interaction patterns strongly support the evolution of generalized reciprocity. The future probability of being rewarded for an altruistic act is inversely proportional to the average connectivity of the social network when cooperators are rare. Accordingly, sparse networks are conducive to the invasion of reciprocal altruism. Moreover, the evolutionary stability of cooperation is enhanced by a modular network structure. Communities of reciprocal altruists are protected against exploitation, because modularity increases the mean access time, that is, the average number of steps that it takes for a random walk on the network to reach a defector. Sparseness and community structure are characteristic properties of vertebrate social interaction patterns, as illustrated by network data from natural populations ranging from fish to primates.  相似文献

Studies of wild mountain gorillas have demonstrated strong preferences among new mothers for the silverback. Protection against infanticide has been theorized to be the primary cause for this attraction. We examined social partner preferences in captive western lowland mothers during the 6 mo after parturition and found that juveniles and females were the primary members of the new mothers' social network. Mothers spent significantly more time in close proximity with both of these subgroups than with the silverback. Proximity patterns changed over time: new mothers spent more time near females in the month after parturition than in the month prior to parturition, and spatial proximity increased again in months 2-6 postparturition. These findings differ from those reported for wild mountain gorillas, which may reflect the lack of infanticide risk in captivity. Given current hypotheses that infanticide may be a limited in western lowland gorillas, the social partner preferences observed here may be indicative of patterns in wild populations.  相似文献
