This study investigated the habitat preferences of Ningaui yvonneae, a small, nocturnal insectivorous marsupial of the semi‐arid regions of southern Australia. Habitat composition was assessed at both the local (trapping grid) and trap scale. Multiple linear regression revealed a significant positive relationship between captures of N. yvonneae and the abundance of hummock grass (Triodia irritans) at the local scale. At the trap scale, the interaction between Triodia irritans and shrubs was found to be significant. This is thought to reflect the importance of the availability of cover to ningauis. Triodia was an essential component of that, probably because it affords greater protection from predators. This study provides quantitative habitat data that supports the contention of other studies that N. yvonneae has a strong positive association with Triodia spp.  相似文献

In contrast to expectations of the enemy release hypothesis, but consistent with the notion of biotic resistance, we found that native generalist crayfishes preferred exotic over native freshwater plants by a 3 : 1 ratio when plants were paired by taxonomic relatedness. Native crayfishes also preferred exotic over native plants when tested across 57 native and 15 exotic plants found growing sympatrically at 11 sites throughout the southeastern USA. Exotic grass carp that share little evolutionary history with most of these plants exhibited no preference for native vs. exotic species. Analyses of three terrestrial data sets showed similar patterns, with native herbivores generally preferring exotic plants, while exotic herbivores rarely exhibited a preference. Thus, exotic plants may escape their coevolved herbivores only to be preferentially consumed by the native generalist herbivores in their new ranges, suggesting that native herbivores may provide biotic resistance to plant invasions.  相似文献

Many studies have shown that women's judgments of men's attractiveness are affected by changes in levels of sex hormones. However, no studies have tested for associations between changes in levels of sex hormones and men's judgments of women's attractiveness. To investigate this issue, we compared men's attractiveness judgments of feminized and masculinized women's and men's faces in test sessions where salivary testosterone was high and test sessions where salivary testosterone was relatively low. Men reported stronger attraction to femininity in women's faces in test sessions where salivary testosterone was high than in test sessions where salivary testosterone was low. This effect was found to be specific to judgments of opposite-sex faces. The strength of men's reported attraction to femininity in men's faces did not differ between high and low testosterone test sessions, suggesting that the effect of testosterone that we observed for judgments of women's faces was not due to a general response bias. Collectively, these findings suggest that changes in testosterone levels contribute to the strength of men's reported attraction to femininity in women's faces and complement previous findings showing that testosterone modulates men's interest in sexual stimuli.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of zooplankton in relation to two types of land‐use (forested and pastoral‐arable) of a lake's surroundings and to various habitats (helophytes, elodeids, nymphaeids and open water) was examined along 16 parallel transects on a macrophyte‐dominated lake (area – 13.3 ha; mean depth – 1.4 m). The type of habitat was the main determinant of zooplankton community structure. Dissected‐leaved elodeids harboured the richest and most abundant community with typically littoral (e.g., Colurella uncinata) and pelagic species (e.g., Keratella cochlearis). Two species (Polyarthra major and P. vulgaris) selectively chose the open water and one (Lecane quadridentata) the Typha stand. No spatial differentiation in zooplankton abundance was recorded between the two types of the catchment area. One possible explanation may be the shallowness and small area of this lake which may support full mixing and no difference in physical‐chemical gradients. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Light‐to‐dark transitions represent one of the most crucial environmental stresses that photosynthetic organisms must cope with, since substantial metabolism adaptations are required in order to utilize alternative energy and carbon sources. Although signal transduction systems for changing light regimes are not sufficiently understood, calcium has been implicated in plants as a second messenger in light‐on and light‐off events. Much less is known about light signalling in cyanobacteria, but it has been shown that calcium probably performs similar signalling roles in these organisms and other prokaryotes. Herein it is reported that light‐to‐dark transitions trigger a calcium transient in aequorin expressing Anabaena sp. PCC7120. The magnitude of this transient depends on the fluence rate previously irradiated and can reach a peak height over 2 µm free calcium when the fluence rate of light is around 400 µmol photons s?1 m?2. The use of increasing calcium concentration, ethylene glycol‐bis (β‐aminoethylether) N,N,N′,N′‐tetraacetic acid (EGTA), verapamil and trifluoperazine indicated that these transients are originated by a calcium influx probably through verapamil‐sensitive Ca2+ channels and are probably modulated by calcium‐binding proteins. Experiments with different light spectral qualities and the photosynthetic inhibitors 3‐(3,4 dichlorophenyl)1,1,dimelthylurea (DCMU) and 3,5‐dibromo‐3‐methyl‐b‐isopropyl‐p‐benzoquinone (DBMIB) indicate that the calcium transient triggered by the light‐to‐dark transition is not coupled to a specific photoreceptor but rather to changes in the redox state of photosynthetic electron transport chain components other than the plastoquinone pool.  相似文献

A model cyclohexapeptide, cyclo-(Phe-(D)Pro-Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp) was synthesized and its IR and VCD spectra were used as a test of density functional theory (DFT) level predictions of spectral intensities for a peptide with a nonrepeating but partially constricted conformation. Peptide structure and flexibility was estimated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the spectra were simulated using full quantum mechanical (QM) approaches for the complete peptide and for simplified models with truncated side chains. After simulated annealing, the backbone conformation of the ring structure is relatively stable, consisting of a normal beta-turn and a tight loop (no H-bond) which does not vary over short trajectories. Only in quite long MD runs at high temperatures do other conformations appear. MD simulations were carried out for the cyclic peptide in water and in TFE, which match experimental solvents, as well as with and without protonation of the Asp carboxyl group. DFT spectral simulations were made using the annealed structure and were extended to include basis set variation, to determine an optimal computational approach, and solvent simulation with a polarized continuum model (PCM). Stepwise full DFT simulation of spectra was done for various sequences with the same backbone geometry but based on (1) solely Gly residues, (2) Ala substitution except Gly and Pro, and (3) complete sequences with side chains. Additionally, a selection of structures was used to compute IR and VCD spectra with the optimal method to determine structural variation effects. The side chains, especially the Asp-COOH and Arg-NH(2) transitions, had an impact on the computed amide frequencies, IR intensities and VCD pattern. Since experimentally these groups would have little chirality, due to conformational variation, they do not impact the observed VCD spectra. Correcting for frequency shifts, the Ala model for the cyclopeptide gives the clearest representation of the amide VCD. The experimental sign pattern for the amide I' band in D(2)O and also the sharper, more intense amide I VCD band in TFE was seen to some degree in one conformer with Type II' turns, but the data favor a mix of structures.  相似文献

Protein fluorescence is a powerful tool for studying protein structure and dynamics if we have a means to interpret the spectral data in terms of protein structural properties. Our previous research successfully provided this support through the development of individual software modules implementing the algorithms for fluorescence and structural analyses. Now we have integrated the developed software modules, introduced a new program for the assignment of tryptophan residues to spectral-structural classes, and created a web-based toolkit PFAST: protein fluorescence and structural toolkit: http://pfast.phys.uri.edu/. PFAST contains three modules: (1) FCAT is a fluorescence-correlation analysis tool, which decomposes protein fluorescence spectra to reveal the spectral components of individual tryptophan residues or groups of tryptophan residues located close to each other, and assigns spectral components to one of five previously established spectral-structural classes. (2) SCAT is a structural-correlation analysis tool for the calculation of the structural parameters of the environment of tryptophan residues from the atomic structures of the proteins from the Protein Data Bank (PDB), and for the assignment of tryptophan residues to one of five spectral-structural classes. (3) The last module is a PFAST database that contains protein fluorescence and structural data obtained from results of the FCAT and SCAT analyses.  相似文献

Limited data are available on hemispheric lateralization in wild orang-utans. There has been only one previous investigation of limb preferences in wild orang-utans [Yeager, 1991]. We examined the lateralization of limb use in wild Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) with the aim of providing more insight into possible hemispheric specialization in wild nonhuman primates. Here, we report in detail on limb use and preference during arboreal locomotion between trees (N=6) and on feeding involving one limb (N=8) and two limbs (N=6). We distinguished between locomotion between overlapping trees (Type I) and locomotion involving gap crossing (Types II and III). For locomotion Type I, the six orang-utans showed no leading hand preference, however for locomotion Types II and III, all six showed significant right-hand preferences. All eight orang-utans showed individual hand preferences for reaching for food, but no significant group bias was found. Limb preferences for feeding involving two limbs (hand-hand or hand-foot) differed between juveniles (right hand-right foot), adult females (left hand-right hand) and adult males (right hand-left hand). Although not present for all tasks, the results indicate that orang-utans do show evidence of hemispheric specialization, but the use of the hands is not under a strong lateralized hemispheric control and is adaptable.  相似文献

The photoenzymatic cycle of the light-dependent NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (LPOR) was investigated in situ during early stages of development of bean leaves under light-dark cycles (LDC). In the experimental system used in this study, prolamellar bodies developed during night periods and disappeared during light periods. This was accompanied by changes in the photoactive to non-photoactive Pchlide ratio, which was higher at the end of the light period, and tended to increase with the number of LDC's. Flash-induced absorbance changes in the Chlide absorption region (700 nm) were used in order to monitor the formation of short- and long-wavelength forms of Chlide (C670-675 and C682-694), which correspond to free Chlide and aggregated Chlide-NADPH-LPOR complexes, respectively. The ratio of long-wavelength to short-wavelength Chlides after one flash increased with the number of LDC's, and was higher in leaves collected at the end of light periods, compared to leaves collected at the end of night periods. During light periods, photoactive Pchlide regeneration and Chlide phytylation were completed within 1 min after flash-induced formation of long-wavelength Chlide. The results show for the first time that the photoenzymatic LPOR cycle proceeds through similar steps, but at much faster rates, during photoperiodic greening than in the previously studied leaves of etiolated plants. In particular, the parallel formation of two Chlide species always occurs, but the ratio of the two species depends on the ratio of photoactive to non-photoactive Pchlide and on light or dark adaptation.  相似文献
