Rediscovery of Anthias salmopunctatus Lubbock & Edwards, 1981, with comments on its natural history and conservation

After c. 30 years without sighting or capture, Anthias salmopunctatus was rediscovered at the type locality, St Peter and St Paul's Rocks, Mid-Atlantic Ridge. To date, the known distribution is restricted to depths varying from 35 to 55 m in vertical drop offs around the perimeter of the islands ( c. 400 m). This may be the smallest geographic range known for a marine fish species.     

A NEW RHEOCRICOTOPUS THIENEMANN & HARNISCHIA (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMIDAE) FROM TAIWAN PROVINCE CHINA

Abstract  Rheocricotopus (Psilocricotopus) taiwanensis sp. n. from Taiwan, China, is described as male imagines. The species is allied to R. (P.) chalybeatus (Edwards) but it is easily separated from the latter in lacking setae in all reins, much lower AR and more pronounced crista dorsalis in gonostylus. The genus is new to Taiwan Province, China. The specimen is deposited at the Department of Biology, Nankai University, Tianjin.     

Taxonomic Review of the Genus Eudorylas Aczél (Diptera: Pipunculidae) in Korea

The Korean species of the genus Eudorylas Aczél have been studied. A total of 16 species are arranged herein. Among them, E. paraappendiculatus sp. nov. is new to science, and E. nomurai Morakote et Yano, 1990 is newly recorded in the Korean fauna.     

A New Species of Poorly Known Mayfly Genus Paegniodes Eaton (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae) from Vietnam

A heptageniid mayfly species Paegniodes dao sp. nov. (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae) is described from Vietnam. The larva is distinguished by round anterolateral margins of pronotum, triangular‐shaped labrum, rudimentary lamella and well developed fibrillae of gills 1, and light brown body that lacks distinct markings. Diagnosis, line drawings, material, and habitat data are provided.     

Evidence of stenotopy and anthropogenic influence on carbon source for two major riverine fishes of the Lake Victoria watershed

Stable isotope analysis was used to investigate the migratory status and to determine the relative contribution of allochthonous and autochthonous sources of carbon for the major riverine fish species ( Barbus altianalis and Labeo victorianus ) in rivers draining the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria. The two fish species derived carbon from both C4 and C3 plant sources, although L. victorianus exhibited less enriched isotopic carbon values. Fish samples from stations under direct influence of effluents from sugar factories exhibited enriched δ¹³C signals. Assuming that this reflects carbon sourcing from riparian C4 plants, it suggests that carbon from terrestrial sources can be a major energy source in some rivers. This heavy carbon enrichment associated with sugar factories was spatially restricted and occurred in all seasons, implying that sub-populations of the two fish species are non-migratory. The large migratory populations of these two species, for which Lake Victoria was once famous, may be no more.     

Ecology and biogeography of plant communities associated with the post Plio-Pleistocene relict Rhododendron ponticum subsp. baeticum in southern Spain

Aims Rhododendron ponticum L. is reputed to be a post Plio‐Pleistocene relict plant species with a disjunct distribution that comprises the Iberian Peninsula to the west and the Euxinian region plus some restricted Mediterranean areas to the east. We analysed the ecological range (of subsp. baeticum) in the western area (Aljibe Mountains, north of the Strait of Gibraltar) to understand the factors determining the present area limitation. Location Sierra del Aljibe, north of the Strait of Gibraltar (Iberian Peninsula). Methods We selected 20 riparian sites where R. ponticum is common, and compiled data on the ecological diversity of associated woody species and ferns. We established a 500‐m main transect in each site, along the stream or river course, in which we placed five 20‐m‐long plots at regular intervals. We recorded physiographic habitat features, woody plants and fern abundance, and the number of R. ponticum individuals. Results Rhododendron ponticum in southern Spain is restricted to riparian forests in acidic soils (pH 4.0–6.4), and is mainly found on the banks of inclined and enclosed streams. In our inventory we recorded 59 woody taxa and 12 ferns, with R. ponticum being the dominant species of the understorey (mean abundance 78.6%). The communities are characterized by a high incidence of the humid warm temperate element, both in number of species (18.8 ± 3.7 per site) and abundance; meanwhile, the presence of the modern Mediterranean element (mean number of species 3.4 ± 3.8 per site) appears to be favoured by disturbance. These ecological–historical groups of taxa also show distinct patterns of typological habit, frequency of endemism, infrageneric diversity and geographical range. Populations of R. ponticum are characterized by a very variable density of seedlings in many sites, and the virtual lack of juveniles. Main conclusions Riparian forests of the Aljibe Mountains constitute a refuge for R. ponticum where the species persists, but populations appear to be in decline. The narrow ecological range of R. ponticum in the area strongly contrasts with its wide amplitude in the eastern natural area, mainly the Euxinian region, where R. ponticum probably finds better conditions due to the environmental heterogeneity of the region, and the lack of a hot dry season.     

Four New Species of Xenylla (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) from Korea

ABSTRACT Four new species of the collembolan genus Xenylla, X. convexopyga, X. longistriata, X. dotata and X. marina from Korea are described. X. convexopyga is characterized by an absence of the dorsal seta m₃ on Th. II-III. While the other three new species share similarities in dorsal chaetotaxic characters. However, they are dissimilar in the following respects: ventral chaetotaxy, body colour, presence or absence of inner teeth on unguis, the length proportion of abdominal segments and thoracic segments, arrangement of anal papillae and the general shape of apical bulb of fourth antennal segment. As a result of this study, a total of 25 species in 6 genera of Hypogastruridae have been recorded from the Korean Peninsula.     

Analysis of mitochondrial DNA from somatic hybrid cell lines of Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane) and Pennisetum americanum (pearl millet)

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from cell suspension cultures of two intergeneric somatic hybrids of Pennisetum americanum (pearl millet) + Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane) was examined by restriction endonuclease digestion and hybridization with sorghum mtDNA cosmids. The mtDNA of one somatic hybrid was indistinguishable from that of pearl millet, while the second exhibited a combination of parental mtDNAs, suggesting mitochondrial fusion. Several novel, possibly recombinant, mtDNA restriction fragments were detected in this hybrid, which may have resulted from intergenmic recombination.Florida Agriculture Experiment Station Journal Series No: 8090.     

Paternal inheritance of chloroplast DNA in Larix

Restriction enzyme analysis was used to determine the inheritance of chloroplast DNA in conifers. The plant material studied included five individual trees of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) and Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis Sieb. & Zucc.) and six hybrids from controlled crosses between these species. The chloroplast DNA fragment patterns generated by Bam-HI and Bcl-I were species-specific. Paternal inheritance of chloroplast DNA patterns was found in most Larix crosses. One hybrid showed maternal chloroplast DNA patterns. In addition, two other hybrids had mixed Bam-HI patterns suggesting recombination between maternal and paternal chloroplast DNA. The mechanisms favoring paternal inheritance in conifers are not known. Paternal inheritance of chloroplast DNA is suggested it to be a general phenomenon in conifers.
