Summary The present experiments report differences in in vitro nuclear binding affinity for L-tryptophan 1) between livers of young (6 1/2 weeks old) and older (30 weeks old) NZBWF1 mice, but not so in similar aged Swiss mice, and also, 2) in livers of hamsters compared to livers of guinea pigs. In vitro hepatic nuclear specific binding affinity after tube-feeding L-tryptophan (520mg/100g body weight) to mice 1 h before killing revealed less in young than in older NZWBF1 mice, comparable to the above in vitro assay studies. In vitro nuclear binding affinity for L-tryptophan of livers of hamsters was significantly less than that of livers of guinea pigs or Swiss mice. In general, the degree of stimulatory effect on hepatic protein synthesis, as measured by in vitro [14C]leucine incorporation into protein using microsomes of animals tube-fed L-tryptophan 1 h before killing compared to that of animals tubefed water, correlated with the basal nuclear specific binding affinity to L-tryptophan of the animals (ages and species) used.This study was supported by U.S. Public Health Service Research Grant DK-45353 from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.  相似文献

Summary The behaviour of eleven Saintpaulia ionantha (H. Wendl.) genotypes in protoplast culture was compared. Isolation of protoplasts from young shootlets regenerated in vitro on leaf explants, yielded 0.7 to 1.8 × 106 protoplasts per gram fresh weight. In all cultivars and breeding lines tested, cell divisions were observed. The mean division frequencies varied between 1.0 and 5.0% after 14 days, and between 6.4 and 13.8% after 24 days of culture. In ten genotypes callussing and shoot regeneration were achieved. The difference between the genotypes in shoot regeneration rate, between 2 and 68%, was more pronounced. Abstract.
  • 1 Spatial and temporal variation in body size of yellow dungflies, Scatophaga stercoraria, gathering on and around cow droppings was studied in an Icelandic population in order to elucidate the effect of male and female size on male mating tactics.
  • 2 Males copulating on droppings were on average larger than males copulating in the grass, but of similar size to males guarding ovipositing females. Males searching on droppings were smaller than males copulating or guarding females on droppings but larger than males copulating in the grass. No such differences were found in female size.
  • 3 Resource-holding power of males (RHP, i.e. male: female size ratio) differed between the three mating groups and was highest for males on the droppings. Size and RHP clearly affect the tactics of copulating males. Males with low RHP tend to copulate in the grass in spite of the cost of longer copulation duration. We argue that this is caused by risk of takeovers from large searching males.
  • 4 There was no change in male size with the age of individual droppings. Contrary to what might be expected, large searching males are not predominantly found at fresh droppings when the probability of catching unpaired females is highest. We suggest instead that good prospects in taking females over from other males must make the strategy to search for females on older droppings profitable.
  • 5 RHP did not change with age of dropping in the three mating groups. The size of ovipositing females increased with age of dropping, probably reflecting longer copulation and egg-laying times of large females.
  • 6 We found an overall positive relationship between sizes of male and female partners. This correlation was highly significant for copulating pairs in the grass. This is probably a consequence of males with low RHP copulating in the grass and fights in which larger males take over females from smaller males. A weaker, but significant, correlation was found amongst ovipositing pairs. This must be due to take-over effects. No size correlation was found for pairs copulating on droppings.

Abstract.
  • 1 This paper examines the calling behaviour and spatial distribution of male Sciarasaga quadrata Rentz (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), a bushcricket that is subject to attack by an acoustically orienting parasitoid fly, Homotrixa sp. (Diptera: Tachinidae: Ormiini).
  • 2 Checks on calling activity in populations of S.quadrata confirmed that calling began 2–3 h before sunset and continued well beyond midnight. Calling activity was not restricted by temperature with males calling over air temperatures of 10.6–24.2°C.
  • 3 Nearest-neighbour analyses, within the sampled areas, revealed that the spacing between calling males was random and the minimum distance between calling males was 3.74 m. Mean distances between calling males varied between 9.2 m and 23.0 m and significantly changed as male density, which peaked at 0.36 calling males per 100 m2, declined over the calling season.
  • 4 Males showed no preference for any one plant species, with their distribution across bushes not significantly different to the frequency of the plants within the habitat. The perch height of calling males was on average half way up the height of a bush and was significantly influenced by the height of the bush. Perch height was not significantly influenced by proximity to calling males or by whether or not males were parasitized.
  • 5 Site fidelity of males was low with only 0–10% of bushes occupied by calling males over successive nights. Males, though flightless, moved on average 6.70 m and up to 26.56 m per night.
  • 6 No evidence was found for the use of aggregation in S.quadrata as a primary defence against ormiine attack. Commencing calling prior to sunset, frequent movement, and a lack of association with any particular plant species, although possibly relevant to ormiine attack, could also be explained in terms of other activities such as male-male interactions and mating behaviour.

Synopsis Synopsis Pipefishes have rarely been watched in the wild and have never before been followed in their common seagrass habitats. This study explores the reproductive ecology of five species of pipefishes living in a Swedish eelgrass meadow during parts of four breeding seasons, tagging four of the species. Pipefish are remarkable for their specialised paternal care: only males aerate, osmoregulate and nourish the developing embryos. Two of the species (Entelurus aequoreus andNerophis ophidion) have simple ventral gluing of eggs on the trunk while three species (Syngnathus acus, S. rostellatus andS. typhle) have fully enclosed brood pouches on their tails. Males of the former species receive eggs from one female while males of the genusSyngnathus receive partial clutches from several females. Sex ratios of adults on the site differed from equal to male-biased to female-biased, according to species.S. typhle were most numerous and were resighted most often. They were present throughout the breeding season whereas there were temporal shifts in the presence of the other species on the meadow and in some sex ratios. Most species occurred in the deeper, denser part of the meadow but there was some habitat separation by species and sex. All species tended to stay low in the eelgrass, primarily coming up above the eelgrass to display and mate. No species showed site fidelity either to a home range or to the meadow, withE. aequoreus adults spending least time on the meadow. Sexual size dimorphism differed: males were larger inS. rostellatus, the same size inS acus and smaller in the other species. Although the species overlap in habitat requirements and breeding season, the only observed interspecific interactions were abortive courtships betweenSyngnathus species.  相似文献

Summary Adrenal glands of adult male hamsters are larger and secrete more cortisol than those of females. Stereology was therefore used to study zonal and cellular aspects of development of the adrenal cortex of male and female hamsters. Adrenal glands were studied at weekly intervals from day 21 to day 77 of postnatal ontogenesis. Within this period, body weight did not differ significantly between the sexes. During development, absolute and relative adrenal weights were higher in males; their zona glomerulosa (ZG), zona fasciculata (ZF) and zona reticularis (ZR) become markedly larger than those in females. No marked changes in the volume of individual ZG cells occurred although ZF cells and ZR cells become larger in male than female animals. The total number of adrenocortical cells increased within the period studied, a greater increase being observed in ZG and ZF in males. No distinct sex difference was observed in the number of ZR cells throughout development. From day 56 of postnatal life the adrenal cortex of male hamster contained more parenchymal cells than the female gland. These results thus indicate that sex differences in hamster adrenal cortex depend upon changes in number and size of parenchymal cells.Supported in part by a grant from the Committee of Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences  相似文献

Summary Seeds from 27 wild strains (18 tetraploids and 9 diploids) of Glycine weightii were germinated at a pH range of 5 to 8. The differences in germination (%) between all the strains were highly significant but between pH levels they were only nearly significant (P=0.067) with no interaction between pH levels and strains. Mean germination (%) for all tetraploids seems to be slightly higher ( 2%) than that for all diploids, especially at pH's 5, 7 and 8 but this may be due to the significantly longer time ( one day) it took tetraploids to complete germination. The apparent inverse relationship between seed weight and germination (%) was not significant.Mean germination time was highly significant for strains, pH's and their interaction. Increasing mean germination (%) resulted in decreasing mean germination time among strains. Large seeds took less time to germinate especially those from some of the tetraploid strains. This indicates that it is possible to produce a variety with high germination (%), fast germination rate and possibly large seeds. If the marked difference in pH tolerance among strains will prove to be mainly hereditary, then it will be also possible to select for either specific pH tolerance or tolerance at a wide range of pH.  相似文献

The behavior of orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus)was observed in two captive groups (one adult group, one juvenile group). Activity profiles,animal interactions, and compartmental spatial use for both adult-group and juvenile-group individuals were recorded over a 9-month period. Behavioral repertoires for both groups included large amounts of social activity. Equivalent amounts of social activity were found for each group. The social behavior of juvenile animals involved more active behavior such as play. The social behavior of the adult animals was more subtle, involving social monitoring and allogrooming. These results indicate that orangutans, at least when group-living in captivity, exhibit the potential to display social behavior which is apparently of greater frequency and complexity than that which has been observed in the wild. These findings suggest that the solitary behavior of wild orangutans is not a necessary characteristic of orangutan behavior. Under different environmental conditions orangutans appear to readily adapt socially, and, like other nonhuman primates,they have the capacity to exhibit complex and subtle social behavior. Observations on petalial asymmetry for 190 hominoid endocasts are reported, and their statistical differences assessed. While all taxa of hominoids show asymmetries to various degrees, the patterns or combinations of petalial asymmetries are very different, with fossil hominids and modern Homo sapiens showing an identical pattern of left-occipital, right-frontal petalias, which contrasts with those found normally in pongids. Of the pongids, Gorilla shows the greater degree of asymmetry in left-occipital petalias. Only modern Homo and hominids (Australopithecus, Homo erectus, Neandertals) show a distinct left-occipital, right-frontal petalial pattern. Analysis by x2 statistics shows the differences to be highly significant. Due to small sample size and incompleteness of endocasts, small-brained hominids, i.e., Australopithecus, are problematical. To the degree that gross petalial patterns are correlated with cognitive task specialization, we speculate that human cognitive patterns evolved early in hominid evolution and were related to selection pressures operating on both symbolic and spatiovisual integration, and that these faculties are corroborated in the archaeological record.  相似文献
