Abstract.
- 1 This paper examines the calling behaviour and spatial distribution of male Sciarasaga quadrata Rentz (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), a bushcricket that is subject to attack by an acoustically orienting parasitoid fly, Homotrixa sp. (Diptera: Tachinidae: Ormiini).
- 2 Checks on calling activity in populations of S.quadrata confirmed that calling began 2–3 h before sunset and continued well beyond midnight. Calling activity was not restricted by temperature with males calling over air temperatures of 10.6–24.2°C.
- 3 Nearest-neighbour analyses, within the sampled areas, revealed that the spacing between calling males was random and the minimum distance between calling males was 3.74 m. Mean distances between calling males varied between 9.2 m and 23.0 m and significantly changed as male density, which peaked at 0.36 calling males per 100 m2, declined over the calling season.
- 4 Males showed no preference for any one plant species, with their distribution across bushes not significantly different to the frequency of the plants within the habitat. The perch height of calling males was on average half way up the height of a bush and was significantly influenced by the height of the bush. Perch height was not significantly influenced by proximity to calling males or by whether or not males were parasitized.
- 5 Site fidelity of males was low with only 0–10% of bushes occupied by calling males over successive nights. Males, though flightless, moved on average 6.70 m and up to 26.56 m per night.
- 6 No evidence was found for the use of aggregation in S.quadrata as a primary defence against ormiine attack. Commencing calling prior to sunset, frequent movement, and a lack of association with any particular plant species, although possibly relevant to ormiine attack, could also be explained in terms of other activities such as male-male interactions and mating behaviour.

Abstract A new sulfated, cyclic depsipeptide, called cyanopeptolin S, from Microcystis sp. was isolated from a water bloom in the Auensee/Leipzig (Germany). The depsipeptide had a relative molecular mass of 925 and contained l-arginine, l-threonine, l-isoleucine, N-methyl-l-phenylalanine, a l-glutamic acid-δ-aldehyde ring system and a sulfated d-configurated glyceric acid as a side chain. The structure was elucidated by means of two-dimensional 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, fast atom bombardment mass spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and combined gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. -Mannanase produced by Bacillus sp. W-2, isolated from decayed commercial konjak cake, was purified from the culture supernatant by (NH4)2 SO4 precipitation, adsorption to konjak gel, and column chromatography with DEAE-cellulose, Sephadex G-100 and Sephacryl S-200. Its molecular size was estimated by SDS-PAGE as 40 kDa, and by gel filtration as 36 kDa. The enzyme was most active at pH 7 and 70°C and was stable for at least 1 h between pH 5 and 10 and below 60°C. Its activity was completely inhibited by Hg2+. Summary Rye secalins are a polymorphic mixture of polypeptides which are classified into four major groups. Previous studies have shown that the structural genes for two of the groups (the -secalins and 40K -secalins) are located on the short arm of chromosome 1R and those for a third group (the high molecular weight secalins) on the long arm of the same chromosome. Analysis of F2 grain from crosses between inbred lines of S. cereale shows that the structural genes for the -secalins (designated Sec 1) and the high molecular weight secalins (designated Sec 3) are loosely linked (40.8 ±3.76% recombination, 57.4 ± 11.30 cM). Analysis of wheat rye addition lines shows that the structural genes for the 75K -secalins are present on chromosome 2R. This locus is provisionally designated Sec 2. These genes are probably derived from those for the 40K -secalins by duplication, divergence and translocation. Analysis of secalin fractions from wild species of rye shows that all contain 75K -secalins, indicating that the duplication and divergence, if not the translocation, occurred before speciation of the genus. 相似文献

Summary Thirty two bacteria antagonistic to a number of phytopathogenic fungi were isolated from soil samples. One bacterial strain, designated as M 51, appeared to be particularly active towardsF. oxysporum f. sp.dianthii, in vitro andin vivo and it was inhibitoryin vitro to three otherFusarium spp. used. Tests to find if there was protection against fusarium wilt were carried out by three different methods of inoculation of the cuttings: a) dipping of cuttings for ten minutes in bacterial suspension; b) spraying of suspension on perlite where the rooted cuttings were planted; c) spraying the greenhouse bench rooting boxes, where the non-rooted cuttings were planted, with bacterial suspension. Following this all the cuttings were transplanted into soil naturally highly infested withFusarium oxysporum f. sp.dianthii (3000 units/g). Good protection against fusarium wilt was obtained for cuttings inoculated by method (b). However protection decreased gradually about 60 days after they were transplanted; both control and inoculated cuttings showed a comparable mortality rate. A soluble cytochrome, cytochrome c-551 was purified from an aerobic photosynthetic bacterium Erythrobacter species strain OCh 114 (ATCC No. 33942) by ammonium sulfate fractionation, ion-exchange chromatography and gel-filtration. The cytochrome had absorption maxima at 277, 410, and 524–525 nm in the oxidized form, and at 415, 522, and 550.5 nm in the reduced form. At 77 K, the -band of the absorption spectrum of the reduced form split in two at 547 and 549 nm. The millimolar absorption coefficient at 550.5 nm was 26.8 mM-1 cm-1 in the reduced form. This cytochrome was an acidic protein with an isoelectric point of 4.9. Its molecular weight was determined to be 15,000 by gel-filtration on Sephadex G-100 and 14,500 by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The midpoint potential of this cytochrome was +250 mV at pH 7.0. This cytochrome did not bind CO. 相似文献

The frutescent species of the lichen genusCaloplaca are usually united in sect.Thamnoma, but they do not form a natural group. They are derived from different species groups within sect.Gasparrinia from different parts of the world, presumable from species having scleroplectenchymes in cortex and medulla. The algal cells are concentrated between the scleroplectenchymatic strands in large and dense groups, from where medullary plectenchyme extends to the cortex and forms characteristic pseudocyphellae there.—Most of the species seem to be ornithocoprophilous; they grow on rocks along marine coasts where much fog is induced by cold currents.—Caloplaca cribrosa is endemic in Tasmania and New Zealand,C. regalis and the doubtfulC. ambitiosa belong to the antarctic element.C. fragillima from central Chile seems to be propagated by thallus fragments.C. coralloides andC. thamnodes are endemic to California and Baja California respectively.C. cladodes from the Rocky Mountains deviates in many characteristics from the other species i.a. by it different ontogenetic development, reduced spore septum, and cementing amyloid polysaccharides within the scleroplectenchymatic strands. The African species are characterized by their distinctly dorsiventral lobes and usually possess oil cells in some of the paraphyses.Caloplaca bonae-spei, C. fragillima andC. thamnodes are new to science. 相似文献
