North American anthropology had an earlier interest in studies of the United States and in critical approaches than is often recognized. Such interests were pursued before World War II but were set aside during the war and in anthropology's postwar expansion. This perspective on anthropological history was inspired by the work of Hortense Powdermaker, specifically the disjunction between her 1930s research in segregated Mississippi and her pioneering study of Hollywood in the late 1940s. Reexamining that study highlights the theoretical framework that led to omissions in her account of Hollywood, while her explanation of movie content invites a more diachronic approach. Parallels between the history of the movies and that of cultural anthropology from the 1930s through the 1960s suggest how both were shaped by the Depression, World War II, and the Cold War.  相似文献

Question: Can the geographic patterning of endemic plant species inform reserve selection in a region of high endemism? Location: The Southeastern Coastal Plain of North America, focusing primarily on the imperiled longleaf pine (Pinus palustris P. Miller) ecosystem. Methods: We documented the high level of plant endemism in the region, and characterized the endemic taxa into distributional subregions. Results: A total of 1630 plant taxa are endemic to the Coastal Plain, a large proportion of which are endemic to phytogeographical subregions within the Coastal Plain, with particularly large numbers of narrow endemics occurring in the East Gulf Coastal Plain and Florida Peninsula. Conclusions: This pattern of local endemism presents challenges in conserving the full biota of the region: a reserve system focusing on few and large conservation areas has theoretical benefits for long‐term management and viability, but will fail to capture many local endemics. We propose that the dispersed distribution of endemic species will require a mixture of large core reserves and smaller satellite reserves.  相似文献

We herein report the design, synthesis and molecular docking studies of 2,4-thiazolidinedione derivatives containing benzene sulphonyl group which are docked against the Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor (PPARγ) target. Compound 7p was most effective in lowering the blood glucose level as compared to standard drugs pioglitazone and rosiglitazone. Compound 7p exhibited potent PPAR-γ transactivation of 61.2% with 1.9 folds increase in gene expression. In molecular docking studies 7p showed excellent interactions with amino acids TYR 473, SER 289, HIE 449, TYR 327, ARG 288, MET 329 and LEU 228. Compound 7p did not cause any damage to the liver without any noteworthy weight gain and may be considered as promising candidates for the development of new antidiabetic agents.  相似文献

This article assesses the treaty practice of the five Arctic Ocean coastal states and Iceland in dealing with the issue of transboundary hydrocarbon deposits as part of the conclusion of maritime delimitation and other related agreements. That practice suggests a number of different ways in which states deal with the issue of hydrocarbon deposits bisected by a maritime delimitation: (1) silence, (2) a standard unity of deposit clause, (3) more complex variations on the standard clause including framework agreements for the development of transboundary deposits, and (4) a delimitation line with some form of joint development zone. This article assesses the Arctic state practice within this typology seeking to supplement the existing literature which tends to focus on the North Sea and Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Three new species of Swartzieae are described and illustrated:Swartzia alternifoliolata, S. capixabensis, andZollernia cowanii. Swartzia apetala var.blanchetii and var.subcordata are considered to be synonyms ofS. apetala var.apetala, andS. grazielana a synonym ofS. macrostachya var.macrostachya. Although most provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea are regarded customary international law and the United States views most of its provisions as such, the outsider status of the United States causes problems in some areas, especially concerning the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles. Evolution of herkogamy has been ascribed to preventing autonomous selfing within flowers, but this argument has received challenges due to the negative effects of sexual interference on reproductive success of plant species. We examined the effects of the two contrasting modes of herkogamy, detailed by the different patterns of style movement, on the foraging time of pollinators on flowers, pollen removal, and deposition in two Chamerion species. Our results suggested that the duration of foraging time of bumblebees was generally higher in C. angustifolium (L.) Holub than in C. conspersum (Hausskn.) Holub during the male-phase of flowers, but the reverse during the female-phase of flowers. As a result, stigma interfered with pollen removal more in C. conspersum than in C. angustifolium, based on examinations of pollen removal after one visit by a pollinator. However, this negative effect on total pollen removal was covered by the high pollinator diversity and the possible high visitation rate in the study sites. In contrast, we found that almost no difference existed in pollen deposition rate after one visit of a pollinator between the two Chamerion species, and emasculation did not increase the total pollen deposition in either species, indicating that anthers did not interfere with pollen deposition in the two Chamerion species. Our results suggested that, compared with C. conspersum, the derived mode of herkogamy in C. angustifolium reduced interference of stigmas in pollen removal. This might contribute to the wide distribution of C. angustifolium, to some degree, in environments of pollinator scarcity and low activity in newly colonized habitats.  相似文献

Abstract: Identifying and managing Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) habitat has been an important wildlife issue for many years on the Tongass National Forest of southeastern Alaska, USA. We evaluated habitat selection of Sitka black-tailed deer in the central portion of the region during a winter with snowfall 43% above average using telemetry relocations from 30 individuals that survived the winter. Ivlev indices for habitat selection within home ranges indicated that deer used less than expected, based on availability, north, east, and west aspects, areas >244-m elevation, noncommercial forests, and the low-timber volume stratum while selecting south aspects, areas <153-m elevation, and areas within 305 m of saltwater. Deer used less than expected moderately coarse-canopied forests in the medium- and high-timber volume strata typically found on north slopes while selecting moderately fine-canopied forest in the high-timber volume stratum on south slopes. The lower than expected use of higher volume gap-phase old growth was likely because these were on north aspects where snow accumulated and persisted due to protection from maritime storms. Point relocations suggested less use than expected in clearcuts <41 years of age, while data from 7.2-ha error polygons showed deer were neutral to clearcuts. This suggests that if deer do avoid clearcuts they remain close to the forest-clearcut edge. Of 4 habitat-mapping methods evaluated, the method that incorporated timber volume strata and a wind disturbance-related aspect had greatest utility in identifying areas selected for or used disproportionately little by deer during the deep snow winter. We found that deer exhibited marked changes in habitat use during deep snow conditions compared to a low snow winter, and we agree with previous researchers that providing habitats selected by deer during deep snowfall is an important consideration in Sitka black-tailed deer habitat management.  相似文献

Forest regrowth after cropland abandonment and urban sprawl are two counteracting processes that have influenced carbon (C) sequestration in the southeastern United States in recent decades. In this study, we examined patterns of land-use/land-cover change and their effect on ecosystem C storage in three west Georgia counties (Muscogee, Harris, and Meriwether) that form a rural–urban gradient. Using time series Landsat imagery data including MSS for 1974, TM for 1983 and 1991, and ETM for 2002, we estimate that from 1974 to 2002, urban land use in the area has increased more than 380% (that is, 184 km2). Most newly urbanized land (63%) has been converted from forestland. Conversely, cropland and pasture area has decreased by over 59% (that is, 380 km2). Most of the cropland area was converted to forest. As a result, the net change in forest area was small over the past 29 years. Based on Landsat imagery and agricultural census records, we reconstructed an annual gridded data set of land-cover change for the three counties for the period 1850 to 2002. These data sets were then used as input to the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM) to simulate land-use effects on C fluxes and storage for the study area. Simulated results suggest that C uptake by forest regrowth (approximately 23.0 g C m−2 y−1) was slightly greater than the amount of C released due to deforestation (approximately 18.4 g C m−2 y−1), thus making the three counties a weak C sink. However, the relative importance of different deforestation processes in this area changed significantly through time. Although agricultural deforestation was generally the most important C-release process, the amount of C release attributable to urbanization has increased over time. Since 1990, urbanization has accounted for 29% of total C loss from the study area. We conclude that balancing urban development and forest protection is critically important for C management and policy making in the southeastern United States.  相似文献
