Forest inventories are largely neglected in the debate of national parks selection in Guyana (and probably elsewhere). Because taxonomic data are often scant and biased towards are as of high collecting effort, large scale forest inventory data can be a useful tool adding to a knowledge database for forests. In this paper the use of forest inventories to select national parks in Guyana is assessed. With the data of a large scale inventory five forest regions could be distinguished and two were added on the base of existing other information. Forest composition in Guyana is largely determined by geology at a national level and soil type at regional level. Species diversity is higher in the south of Guyana, possibly due to higher disturbance and is also higher on the better soils. It is concluded that a selection of national parks in Guyana should include a sample of all seven regions, including as much soil variation as possible. Because of land use conflicts in central Guyana, this area is in need of quick attention of Guyana's policy makers.  相似文献

Summary Yellowish compact callus, induced from cowpea hypocotyls on Murashige and Skoog(MS) medium (1962) containing 0.2 mg/l(0.93 μM) kinetin and 0.4 mg/l (1.81 μM) 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), was subcultured on MS medium containing cytokinin alone, auxin alone, or auxins plus cytokinins in order to determine the effect of cytokinins on root organogenesis in callus cultures. The callus actively proliferated on the same medium but did not show any organogenic activity macroscopically as well as microscopically. On medium with N6-benzyladenine (BA) and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), the yellowish compact callus first changed to pale green compact callus and then many green spots appeared on its surface under light culture. But the yellowsih compact callus remained yellowish and white spots appeared on its surface in dark culture. These spots gradually became white nodular structures. Adventitious root formation from the nodular structures occurred not only on the same medium, but also on medium with either auxin or cytokinin but not both. Yellowish compact callus on medium with auxin alone was transformed to yellowish friable callus, which did not develop adventitious roots. The yellowish friable callus could gain rhizogenic activity only after morphological modification to pale green compact callus on medium with auxin plus cytokinin. The modified callus did not form adventitious roots on medium with auxins but only with cytokinins. Therefore, it is suggested that cytokinins have stimulating effects on root formation from callus that previously did not show rhizogenic activity on medium with auxins alone. In addition, the rhizogenic potential of cowpea callus was discriminated from that of leaf explants, which formed adventitious roots directly on medium with auxin alone.  相似文献

Because of the water-limited nature and discontinuous plant cover of shortgrass steppe, spatial patterns in ecosystem properties are influenced more by the presence or absence of plants than by plant type. However, plant type may influence temporal patterns of nutrient cycling between plant and soil. Plants having the carbon-3 (C3) or carbon-4 (C4) photosynthetic pathway differ in phenology as well as other attributes that affect nitrogen (N) cycling. We estimated net N mineralization rates and traced nitrogen-15 (15N) additions among plant and soil components during May, July, and September of 1995 in native plots of C3 plants, C4 plants, or mixtures of C3 and C4. Net N mineralization was significantly greater in C3 plots than in C4 plots during both July and September. C3 plots retained significantly more 15N in May than did mixed and C4 plots; these differences in 15N retention were due to greater 15N uptake by C3 plants than by C4 plants during May. There were no significant differences in total 15N retention among plant communities for July and September. Soil 15N was influenced more by presence or absence of plants than by type of plant; greater quantities of 15N remained in soil interspaces between plants than in soil directly under plants for July and September. Our results indicate that plant functional type (C3 versus C4) can affect both the spatial and the temporal patterns of N cycling in shortgrass steppe. Further research is necessary to determine how these intraseasonal differences translate to longer-term and coarser-scale effects of plants on N cycling, retention, and storage. Plant Functional Type Effects on Trace Gas Fluxes in the Shortgrass Steppe   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Plant community structure is expected to regulate the microbial processes of nitrification and denitrification by controlling the availability of inorganic N substrates. Thus it could also be a factor in the concomitant release of NO and N2O from soils as a result of these processes. C3 and C4 plants differ in several attributes related to the cycling of nitrogen and were hypothesized to yield differences in trace gas exchange between soil and atmosphere. In this study we estimated fluxes of NO, N2O and CH4 from soils of shortgrass steppe communities dominated by either C3 plants, C4 plants or mixtures of the two types. We collected gas samples weekly from two sites, a sandy clay loam and a clay, throughout the growing seasons of 1995 and 1996. Plant functional type effects on gas fluxes at the clay site were not apparent, however we found several differences among plant communities on the sandy clay loam. CH4 uptake from atmosphere to soil was significantly greater on C4 plots than C3 plots in both years. NO fluxes were significantly greater from C4 plots than from C3 plots in 1995. NO fluxes from C3 and mixed plots were not significantly different between 1995 and 1996, however fluxes from C4 plots were significantly greater in 1995 compared to 1996. Results indicate that under certain environmental conditions, particularly when factors such as moisture and temperature are not limiting, plant community composition can play an important role in regulating trace gas exchange.  相似文献

This study provides the first evidence of pronounced temporary laryngeal descent in a bovid species. An elaborate acoustic display is prominent in male courtship behavior of polygynous Mongolian gazelle. During rut, rounding up of females is accompanied by continuous head‐up barking by dominant males. Throughout the rut their evolutionarily enlarged larynx descends to a low mid‐neck resting position. In the course of each bark the larynx is additionally retracted toward the sternum by 30% of the resting vocal tract length. A geometric model of active larynx movements was constructed by combining results of video documentation, dissection, skeletonization, and behavioral observation. The considerable distance between resting position and maximal laryngeal descent suggests a backward tilting of the hyoid apparatus and an extension of the thyrohyoid connection during the retraction phase. Return to the resting position is effected by strap muscles and by the elastic recoil of the pharynx and the thyrohyoid connection. An intrapharyngeal inflation of the peculiar palatinal pharyngeal pouch of adult males is inferred from a short‐time expansion of the ventral neck region rostral to the laryngeal prominence. The neck of adult dominant males is accentuated by long gray guard hairs during the rut. The passive swinging of the heavy larynx of adult males during locomotion gives the impression of a handicap imposed on rutting males. Apparently, this disadvantage becomes outweighed by the profits for reproductive success. J. Morphol., 2008. © 2008 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Four plant functional types (PFTs) were used to compare the vegetation structure of an alien-invaded Acacia nilotica savanna with one of negligible invasions. Heights, canopy covers and species richness of three native PFTs (woody plants, grasses and herbs) and one alien PFT (woody plants) were measured in 14, 1-m2 quadrats sampled in a stratified-random pattern in a 400-m2 plot demarcated in each savanna. In the uninvaded plot, mean heights of native PFTs were stratified. In the invaded plot, the mean height of aliens extended into the native woody stratum with the lower range of native woody PFT heights reduced to the grass stratum. Discriminant analysis of canopy covers and species richness of the four PFTs revealed significant differences in composition between plots with the alien PFT being the most important variable correlated with these differences. Univariate analysis confirmed the dominance of alien woody plants in the invaded plot but also showed significant reductions in the canopy covers and species richness of native herbs and grasses compared to those in the uninvaded plot. These results suggest that PFTs can rapidly measure small-scale, spatial differences in the physiognomy, composition and species richness of A. nilotica savannas when invaded by alien woody plants.  相似文献

Three principally different sites of action have been reported for proinsulin C-peptide, at surface-mediated, intracellular, and extracellular locations. Following up on the latter, we now find that (i) mass spectrometric analyses reveal the presence of the C-peptide monomer in apparent equilibrium with a low-yield set of oligomers in weakly acidic or basic aqueous solutions, even at low peptide concentrations (sub-μM). It further shows not only C-peptide to interact with insulin oligomers (known before), but also the other way around. (ii) Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of C-peptide shows detectable oligomers upon Western blotting. Formation of thioflavin T positive material was also detected. (iii) Cleavage patterns of analogues are compatible with C-peptide as a substrate of insulin degrading enzyme. Combined, the results demonstrate three links with insulin properties, in a manner reminiscent of amyloidogenic peptides and their chaperons in other systems. If so, peripheral C-peptide/insulin interactions, absolute amounts of both peptides and their ratios may be relevant to consider in diabetic and associated diseases.  相似文献

Aim:  To determine the structure of the chimeric chromosome X of bottom-fermenting yeasts.
Methods and Results:  Eight cosmid clones carrying DNA from chromosome X of bottom-fermenting yeasts were selected by end-sequencing. Four of the cosmid clones had Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC)-type and Saccharomyces bayanus (SB)-type chimeric ends, two had SC-type ends and two had SB-type ends. Sequencing revealed that the bottom-fermenting yeast strains in this study had four types of chromosome X: SC–SC, SC–SB, SB–SC and SB–SB. The translocation site in the chimeric chromosome is conserved among bottom-fermenting yeast strains, and was created by homologous recombination within a region of high sequence identity between the SC-type sequence and the SB-type sequence.
Conclusions:  Existing bottom-fermenting yeast strains share a common ancestor in which the chimeric chromosome X was generated.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The knowledge gained in this study sheds light on the evolution of bottom-fermenting yeasts.  相似文献

This work sets out to establish ecomorphological and phenomorphological patterns in the constituent flora of an Iberian Maytenus senegalensis plant community in order to relate it with or separate it from other types of Mediterranean vegetation. This plant community contains tall shrubs, scrubs, palms and vines of a variety of families. Typical ecomorphological adaptations to the Mediterranean climate were observed in the community studied: an abundance of thorny species or species with tomentose leaves and photosynthetic stems, small leaves and a high presence of species with organs capable of post-fire regeneration. However, the community also showed hybrid characteristics between scrubland (predominantly malacophyllous leaves lasting 9 months on average and low biomass) and tall shrubland communities (predominance of phanerophytes up to 3 m in height, predominantly smooth bark, periodical reposition of leaves, mean lifespan of plants 25 years and mainly fleshy fruit). The community also presents an outstanding quantity of amphiphytes (29%). From a phenological point of view, the formation of buds in winter, flowering in spring, summer–autumn seed dispersal and leaf shedding in summer are typical of other Mediterranean communities, while fructification and growth lasting three seasons, as in the case of Maytenus shrubland, is not. The RVA phenophasic index (balance between reproductive and vegetative phenophases) with values of 0.4–2 shows an intermediate value between typical shrubland (0.3–1) and forest community (1–2) values. The APC index (period of phenophasic activity of the community) differentiates it from others, since it remains at 100% for seven months, three of which are winter months. Phenophasic patterns (overlapping, or not, of flower bud formation, flowering and growth) show how similar M. senegalensis shrubland is to forests because of the absence of phenophase pattern type A (characteristic in open-scrublands); in addition, we have detected a new pattern (type G), still regarded as exclusive to M. senegalensis. As regards the existence of coenomorphs (group of species with similar morpho-functional strategies), the studied community showed much greater diversity than other communities studied to date, with an Strategies Richness index (SRi) of 0.79 (11 groups covering the 14 species existing), pointing to the co-existence of a great variety of eco-phenomorphological strategies, each with a successful response to the same ecological conditions. Finally, some of the species in the community, e.g. Asparagus horridus, Chamaerops humilis and M. senegalensis, stand out because of their unique ecomorphological and phenological characteristics.  相似文献

1. Three groups of laboratory experiments clarified the role of nematodes as a potential food resource for the triclad Dugesia gonocephala. The first group measured the functional response of adult D. gonocephala feeding on juvenile or adult Caenorhabditis elegans. The feeding rates of D. gonocephala on adult and juvenile C. elegans followed a type II functional response. The maximum number of adult nematodes and juvenile nematodes eaten by a single D. gonocephala individual within 3 h was 94 and 197 nematodes, respectively. 2. A second group of microcosm experiments investigated the effect of D. gonocephala on the density and the vertical distribution of a nematode community in fine sand. The following treatments were performed: (i) microcosms with 400 nematodes and (ii) microcosms with 400 nematodes and one D. gonocephala. After 5 days, nematodes as a group, as well as the dominant species Tobrilus pellucidus and Trischistoma monohystera, showed no significant difference in vertical patterns between the treatments with and without D. gonocephala. 3. The third group of experiments determined whether grain size of the sediment (sand, fine gravel and coarse gravel) altered the ability of D. gonocephala to consume adult C. elegans. Sand and fine gravel reduced the predation effectiveness of D. gonocephala by 100%, whereas the predator consumed nematodes in coarse gravel (19 nematodes within 3 h).  相似文献
