Although tropical coral reefs are one of the most spectrally complex habitats, there is relatively little known about colour vision of reef fish. In this study, we measured the spectral sensitivity of an endemic Hawaiian coral reef fish, Thalassoma duperrey (family Labridae), and assessed the possible role of visual sensitivity in mediating intraspecific communication. Electrophysiological recordings of compound action potentials from retinal ganglion cells were used to generate spectral sensitivity curves for specific wavelengths (380–620nm). We found at least 2 sensitivity peaks for the on response (max=460, 550nm). The off response lacked a short wavelength mechanism but a medium wavelength mechanism (max=545nm) and a longwave mechanism (max=570nm) were found. To quantify the visual stimulus provided by a conspecific individual, spectral reflectance from the colour pattern of T. duperrey was measured with a spectroradiometer. Luminance and spectral contrast were computed between colour patches of the pattern and between the patches and natural backgrounds (i.e., water and coral). Reflectance from the blue head and contrast from the blue, green and red patches matched the sensitivity maxima of T. duperrey, although this depended on the type of background. Our results indicate that T. duperrey should be able to visually detect the colour pattern of a conspecific fish and that T. duperrey's visual system is designed to enhance target detection in the coral reef habitat with matched and offset cone mechanisms.  相似文献

The calling song of the field cricket, Teleogryllus taiwanemma, is usually considered to consist of sequences of separate chirps. However, sometimes it comprises a phrase of several chirps in a row, with one long chirp (chirp) and a few short chirps (trills). In this study, I compared the phrase containing only chirps with that containing both chirps and trills by analyzing male songs and conducting playback experiments of male songs to females. The song analyses showed significant differences between chirps and trills for all song parameters except bandwidth. To test whether female preference differed with respect to the two phrases, I performed two-speaker playback experiments. When the same numbers of phrases were presented per unit time, females preferred the song with trills to that without trills. This result may reflect female preference for songs with greater sound density. In subsequent playback experiments, I equalized the total sound duration per unit time (duty cycle) in songs with and without trills. The numbers of females that preferred songs with and without trills did not differ significantly. This suggests that trills can attract females like chirps do, even though the two sounds have different components.  相似文献

The production, transmission, and reception of and the behavioral response to long-distance, low-frequency sound by elephants is reviewed. The structure of low-frequency calls generated by elephants is separated into the source and the filter roles played by the lungs, larynx and vocal track, the composition of the expired air and the ambient air temperature. Implications regarding the size, age, sex, sexual and physical status follow from the call structure and detection. Reception of the signal is discussed in terms of the characteristics of the elephants ear with particular attention to the determination of the threshold of hearing and the ability to locate the source of low-frequency sounds. Factors which influence the transmission of near infrasound are related to atmospheric structure. The critical role played by the thermal stratification and vertical gradient and magnitude of the wind in determining both the range and the detection of a signal are discussed for open and closed elephant habitats. Infrasound plays a pervasive role in reproduction, resource utilization, avoidance of predation and other social interactions. Current and future technology can be expected to contribute to the detection and interpretation of elephant communication. This will aid in the understanding of behavior and in efforts to sustain the species.An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Honeybees have a dance language by which successful foragers inform nestmates about attractive food patches. The classical concept of dialects in the dance language of honeybees points to two differences in the dances by different species and races, firstly in the flight distance at which the dancers start performing waggle dances instead of round dances, and secondly in the circuit duration of the waggle dance performed for a given flight distance. However, recent findings have indicated that the dance language is influenced and affected by a number of parameters, both genetic and environmental. The current study was carried out to see whether the distance at which dancers change from round dances to waggle dances is statistically different in two different species, Apis mellifera carnica and A. florea and to develop a set of definitions for such comparative studies. Results show that the two species do not differ in the relative proportion of waggle dances and round dances performed at a given distance. Thus, this study points to the need of addressing the dialect question again.  相似文献

During the dawn chorus, territorial male songbirds vocalise intensively within signalling range of several conspecific males and can therefore be considered members of a busy communication network. The more or less continuous singing over a long period of time under standardised stimulus conditions makes the dawn song a potentially important information source both for simple receivers and for eavesdroppers. Male blue tits (Parus caeruleus) vary in features of their dawn song, e.g. older males sing longer strophes, and females choose males that sing longer strophes as extra-pair partners. However, so far, dawn song in the blue tit has been investigated separately from other singing behaviour of the same males. In this study, we investigate aspects of blue tit male quality, reflected in dawn song characteristics, and their predictive value for how males behave during singing interactions later in the morning. We acted as simple receivers by recording the singing activity of one male at a time at dawn and compared features of its dawn song, such as onset before sunrise, repertoire size, mean bout length, strophe length and percentage performance time to responses of the same male to a territory intrusion simulated by playback of synthesised songs later during the same morning. We assume that an aggressive response towards an intruder will involve a fast approach to the loudspeaker broadcasting strophes of blue tit song, searching for the intruder (flying around), and a high amount of counter singing and overlapping of the intruders songs. Aspects of vigour of response to the simulated intrusion could be predicted from all five investigated dawn song parameters as well as male age. This is, to our knowledge, the first indication that a simple receiver could extract reliable information from a males dawn singing behaviour about its competitiveness later in the day.Communicated by P.K. We explore in this paper the role of genetic variants that affect cell size and proliferation in the determination of organ size. We use genetic mosaics of loss or gain of function in six different loci, which promotes smaller or larger than normal cells, associated to either smaller or larger than normal territories. These variants have autonomous effects on patterning and growth in mutant territories. However, there is no correlation between cell size or rate of proliferation on the size of the mutant territory. In addition, these mosaics show non-autonomous effects on surrounding wildtype cells, consisting always in a reduction in number of non-mutant cells. In all mutant conditions the final size (and shape) of the wing is different than normal. The phenotypes of the same variants include higher density of chaetae in the notum. These autonomous and non-autonomous effects suggest that the control of size in the wing is the result of local cell communication defining canonic distances between cells in a positional-values landscape.  相似文献

The exploitation of predator signals by potential prey is well researched, but relatively little is known about how predators exploit chemical cues (either deliberate signals or waste by-products) produced by their prey. In Finland, the urine of some small rodents (Microtus spp. and Clethrionomys spp.) is reflective in the ultraviolet range of wavelengths, and diurnal raptors with ultraviolet vision use these urine marks to track their rodent prey. This study examines the potential for such a phenomenon in Australian systems by studying the ultraviolet properties of urine from 13 native and introduced mammal species that are variously preyed upon by raptors. Urine from all 13 species displayed various levels of ultraviolet absorbance in their urine and fluorescence in the ultraviolet range. However, no signs of ultraviolet hyper-reflectance were detected, suggesting that the urine of European voles have unique ultraviolet properties. Ultraviolet-sensitive predators in Australia may be able to distinguish between species based on variation in the ultraviolet absorbance of their urine, but ultraviolet properties did not differ between prey and non-prey species, nor marsupial and placental groups. Moreover, because many natural surfaces are ultraviolet absorbing, it is unlikely that raptors could rely upon the ultraviolet properties of urine to target key prey species.  相似文献

We investigated the relationship between auditory sensitivity, frequency selectivity, and the vocal repertoire of greater spear-nosed bats (Phyllostomus hastatus). P. hastatus commonly emit three types of vocalizations: group-specific foraging calls that range from 6 to 11 kHz, low amplitude echolocation calls that sweep from 80 to 40 kHz, and infant isolation calls from 15 to 100 kHz. To determine if hearing in P. hastatus is differentially sensitive or selective to frequencies in these calls, we determined absolute thresholds and masked thresholds using an operant conditioning procedure. Both absolute and masked thresholds were lowest at 15 kHz, which corresponds with the peak energy of isolation calls. Auditory and masked thresholds were higher at sound frequencies used for group-specific foraging calls and echolocation calls. Isolation calls meet the requirements of individual signatures and facilitate parent-offspring recognition. Many bat species produce isolation calls with peak energy between 10 and 25 kHz, which corresponds with the frequency region of highest sensitivity in those species for which audiogram data are available. These findings suggest that selection for accurate offspring recognition exerts a strong influence on the sensory system of P. hastatus and likely on other species of group-living bats.  相似文献

The pheromones used by several species of stingless bees for scent trail communication are generally assumed to be produced by the mandibular glands. Here we present strong evidence that in Trigona recursa these pheromones originate from the labial glands, which are well developed in the heads of foragers. Analysis of the behavior involved in scent marking shows that a bee extends her proboscis and rubs it over the substrate. A single scent marking event lasts for 0.59±0.21 s while the bee runs a stretch of 1.04±0.37 cm on a leaf. According to choice experiments the bees are attracted by a feeder baited with labial gland extract (84.2±6% of the bees choose this feeder) but repelled from a feeder baited with mandibular gland extract (only 27.5±13.1% of the bees choose this feeder). They do not discriminate between two clean feeders (49.6±3% of the bees at a feeder). 87±5.1% of bees already feeding leave the feeder after the application of mandibular gland extract whereas only 6.2±4.9% and 2.6±4% do so when labial gland extract or pure solvent was applied.  相似文献
