The effects of ethylene oxide (EtO) on survival of soil microflora and on selected chemical properties of a sandy-loam soil
were examined.
Soil sterilization was achieved after 8 hours exposure to EtO. Ethylene oxide treatment increased soil pH and organic matter

Summary The alder has a perennial nodule cluster. The nodule amount on the roots increases with tree age. The N2-fixing activity of nodules decreases with nodule age. Purple coloured soils with various soil pHs and CaCO3 contents are, in the main, the ones which influence nodulation and N2-fixing. Higher N2-fixing capacity existed in the neutral and low calcium soils. High calcium soils and acid soils can restrain nodulation and

A continuous nutrient flow system has been developed to measure microbial activity in soil with various concentrations of
added substrate. The system consists of a thin soil layer through which substrate was added continuously over periods up to
4.5 days. Substrate utilization was determined by effluent analysis. Respiration was measured manually by injecting a sample
into a gas chromatograph or automatically by coupling the growth chamber to a computer-controlled gas sampling valve. This
permitted respiratory CO2 to be measured by the gas chromatograph at intervals selected by the investigator. Software controlling the valve and gas
chromatograph not only automated gas phase sampling, but also provided a scan of CO2 evolution and a preliminary data summary. This included the date and time of sample, peak height, and percent CO2 in the gas phase. Data for growth on glucose using a microbial population native to a California annual grassland soil demonstrated
that the direct cell count and respiratory techniques for biomass estimation give comparable results. This procedure provides
the potential for detailed analyses of substrate utilization in studies of the growth and maintenance of soil microorganisms. 相似文献

Summary Cucumber seedlings were grown in a Portsmouth soil-sand system to study how varying soil clay and organic matter content might
modify cucumber seedling response to ferulic acid, a reported allelopathic agent. Leaf area expansion of cucumber seedlings,
soil respiration, and soil solution concentrations of ferulic acid were monitored. Leaf area, mean absolute rates of leaf
expansion, and shoot dry weight of cucumber seedlings were significantly reduced by ferulic acid concentrations ranging from
10 to 70 μg/g dry soil. Ferulic acid was applied every other day, since it rapidly disappeared from soil solution as a result
of retention by soil particles, utilization by microbes and/or uptake by roots. The amount of ferulic acid retained (i.e., adsorbed, polymerized,etc.) by soil particles appeared to be secondary to microbial utilization and/or uptake by roots. Varying clay (5.3 to 9.8 g/cup)
and organic matter (2.0 to 0.04g/cup) contents of the soil appeared to have little impact on the disappearance of ferulic
acid from soil solution under “ideal” growth conditions for cucumber seedlings unless larger amounts of ferulic acid were
added to the soil; in this case 200 μg/g. The addition of ferulic acid to the soil materials substantially increased the activity
of the soil microbes. This latter conclusion is based on recovery of ferulic acid from soil solution and soil respiration
measurements.

Five plant species were cultivated on a soil from the Neckar alluvial fan near Heidelberg (FRG) polluted by the emissions
of a cement plant. Thallium, cadmium and lead concentrations in seedlings and mature plants were determined by atomic absorption
analysis. AdditionallyBrassica napus L.napus was grown on soils containing 5 different concentrations of heavy metals, achieved by mixing two similar soils, from the
same area but with different metal concentrations.
Thallium and cadmium were shown to be taken up by roots whilst lead which was also absorbed, was deposited mainly on the plant
surface. However during cultivation in the winter months, a remarkable deposit of lead via the roots was found. Thallium in
the soil from a anthrorogen source was more available to plants than thallium of geological origin.
During the lifetime of a plant concentrations of thallium and cadmium were always highest in the seedling. The decrease in
metal concentration with maturity depended on the plant species and the element, but was not a function of the metal concentration

The nitrendipine receptor associated with the voltage-dependent calcium channel in rat brain was solubilized by detergent extraction and sonication. The detergent solution used for extraction consisted of 10 mM 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (CHAPS), 0.25% (wt/vol) polyoxyethylene 20 cetyl ether (Brij 58), and 0.025% (wt/vol) polyoxyethylene 17 cetyl stearyl ether (Lubrol WX) in the presence of 30% (wt/vol) glycerol as a stabilizer. The molecular weight of the receptor was estimated to be 1,800K by Sephacryl S-500 gel filtration and 800K by sucrose density gradient sedimentation. The equilibrium dissociation constant of [3H]nitrendipine to the solubilized receptors was 5.6 nM, which is approximately 10 times that of the membrane-bound receptor. The binding of nitrendipine to the receptor was inhibited noncompetitively by the structurally unrelated calcium channel inhibitors verapamil and prenylamine; their concentrations for 50% inhibition were both 1.0 X 10(-7) M, and they caused maximal inhibitions of 70 and 100%, respectively. 相似文献

Synopsis The caloric density of stomach contents in juvenile chinook salmon,Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, was not affected by gastric evacuation, suggesting a constant caloric density of stomach contents during evacuation. Differences in the caloric density of prey consumed did affect caloric density of stomach contents over a 24-h period. Consumption of the amphipodCorophium sp. was associated with reduced caloric densities of stomach contents. During periods whenCorophium contributed more than 4% of the stomach contents, average caloric density declined from 5.56 to 5.33 kcal g–1. Summary An electron-microscopical study of locust thoracic ganglia reveals that synapses in the neuropily are morphologically heterogeneous. In addition to the conventional dyadic type described frequently in the literature, there is a second type with a complex arrangement of presynaptic dense material and a non-dyadic postsynaptic configuration. Serial-section analysis of these synapses suggests that the presynaptic structures include irregular or curved bars, and small projections.Although the proportion of non-dyadic synapses in the neuropile as a whole is small, a substantial number have been found on the branches of an identified flight motor neurone, labelled intracellularly with metal ions in conjunction with silver intensification. Samples from the arborization of this neurone give some indications of the distribution of non-dyadic synapses on it.The results are discussed in the context of distribution of synapses on other identified locust neurones, and the functional morphology of synapses in other phyla. 相似文献

Interaction between nitrogen and photon flux density in birch seedlings at steady-state nutrition 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Birch ( Betula pendula Roth.) was investigated under steady-state nutrition and growth at different incident photon flux densities (PFD) and different relative addition rates of nitrogen. PFD had a strong influence on the relative growth rate at optimum nutrition and on the nitrogen productivity (growth rate per unit of nitrogen) but little effect on the formal relationships between nitrogen and growth, i.e. PFD and nitrogen nutrition are orthogonal growth factors. At a given suboptimum nitrogen (the same distance from optimum), increased PFD increased the relative growth rate and, therefore, the relative uptake rate and the required relative addition rate in accordance with the theoretical equality between these three parameters at steady-state nutrition. Correspondingly, at a given suboptimum relative addition rate, increased PFD decreased nitrogen status (larger distance from optimum) at an unchanged relative growth rate. Nutrient uptake rate, dry matter content, and partitioning of biomass and nutrients are strongly influenced by nitrogen status. PFD influences these characteristics, but only to an extent corresponding to its effect on the nitrogen status. The influence of PDF on the relative growth rate at optimum and on nitrogen productivity is well described by hyperbolic relationships, similar to reported PFD/photosynthesis relationships. These expressions for plant growth as well as the productivities of leaf area and quantum appear to be valuable characteristics of plant responses to light and nutrition. Although the calculated PFD/growth relationships indicate saturation at high values of PFD, a more realistic estimate of PFD at which saturation occurs is about 30 mol m−2 day−1 , where the highest relative growth rate and nitrogen productivity were experimentally determined.
