Photosynthetic and morphological characters of Caragana microphylla in different slope aspects and positions

In order to find out how small scale topographical factors affect growth and physiological characters of Caragana microphylla, which is a widely distributed shrub species and has an important role in restoring degraded grassland in natural ecosystem, a natural population of C. microphylla was chosen in a typical steppe community in June, 2009. The population was 34 km to the southeast of Xilinhot City, China, and a total of 54 shrubs were selected from different slope aspects and positions. We investigated the photosynthetic and morphological characters of these shrubs and analyzed the relationship between plant traits of C. microphylla and soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability. Moreover, the relationship between plant traits of C. microphylla and herbaceous aboveground biomass was studied. (1) The maximum net photosynthetic rate (Pnmax) was significantly lower on shady slopes than that on sunny slopes and higher on upper slopes than that on lower slopes. Stomatal conductance (Gs), net photosynthetic rate/intercellular CO2 concentration (Pn/Ci) and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) under saturated irradiance showed similar trends with slope aspect and position. Likewise, the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), PSII potential activity (Fv/Fo) and the first-year shoot morphological characters of C. microphylla were also correlated with slope aspect and position. (2) Soil nitrogen availability showed no significant effect on photosynthetic or morphological traits of C. microphylla, however, there were several significant relationships between soil phosphorus availability and plant traits. Dry weight, shoot length, compound leaf size, and leaflet length of first-year shoots of C. microphylla were significantly negatively correlated with soil C:P ratio. Though not significant, photosynthetic parameters under saturated light and other morphological characters of first-year shoots were negatively correlated with soil C:P ratio, i.e., these traits increased with increasing soil phosphorus availability. These suggested that the difference of soil phosphorus availability played an important role in making C. microphylla having different photosynthetic and morphological characters on different slope aspects and positions. The individuals grown in relatively P-rich site had longer shoots and larger leaves and grew better. Low phosphorus content was thought to limit photosynthetic activity through several different mechanisms, including both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations, the latter being more likely in the present study. (3) Photosynthetic and morphological characters of C. microphylla were all negatively correlated with herbaceous aboveground biomass, though only Pn/Ci and length of first-year shoot were significantly correlated with it. This indicated that the difference in plant community was a factor making C. microphylla have different growth and physiological characters on different aspects and positions of slope. A number of studies showed that grazing of the herbaceous layer promoted the establishment and proliferation of woody species, and then led to grassland deterioration; but in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, some widely distributed shrub species like C. microphylla created resource islands and provide favorable microhabitat for grass species. In the present study, we found negative correlations between traits of C. microphylla and herbaceous aboveground biomass. We suggested that the removal of livestock grazing result in the decrease of the distribution C. microphylla and increase of grass coverage, and lead to the restoration of the typical steppe. 相似文献

Discriminant analysis was used to analyse the results of 348 bird-feeding trials conducted from 1982 to 1985 in Leverett, Massachusetts. Four size classes, seven appearance categories, and five larval host types, based on 163 species of moths and butterflies used as prey in two or more trials, were selected as predictor variables to discriminate between prey taken and not taken by birds. Discriminant analysis of individual feeding trials correctly classified 97.5 percent of prey taken or not-taken and ranked the predictor variables according to their relative importance in determining prey acceptability. Characteristics most acceptable to birds were: (1) large size, (2) bark-like appearance, (3) warning colouration, (4) woody generalist, (5) dead-leaf-like appearance, (6) woody specialist, and (7) medium size. Characteristics least acceptable to birds were: (1) small size, (2) mimetic appearance, (3) butterfly appearance, (4) herbaceous specialist food type, (5) black-and-white appearance, (6) extra large size, and (7) overall generalist feeder. A summary of the analyses includes a discriminant function based on lepidopteran characteristics that can be used to predict the prey acceptability of species not used in this study. A multiple regression analysis of prey taken revealed that size alone and larval host type combined with other prey characteristics were the most important variables in determining the selection of prey regardless of their abundance in the trials. 相似文献

The Latemar is a mainly aggrading platform, but shows repeated backstepping during its entire development. The behaviour of the slope does not reflect accommodation changes and lateral consistencies of the lagoonal interior; the Latemar contemporaneously reveals different, even contrasting depositional characteristics. The slope of the late stage platform evolution corresponds at least partially to the base-of-slope apron model. Controlling factors on slope evolution are of tectonic (proximity of the Stava Line) and autocyclic (repeated oversteepening) nature. Other factors are insignificant and/or overprinted. The reef-facies at Latemar reveals a complex facies pattern; it varies along and across the margin and is rich in encrusting sponges, corals, biogenic crusts and Microproblematica. Some biota or fossil assemblages—e.g. foraminifers (Abriolina mediterranea, Turriglomina scandonei) or Tubiphytes multisiphonatus thrombolites—have not been described in the Dolomites before. Synopsis To determine whether burbot occupy defined home range in rivers, we radio-tracked individuals in the Ohře River, Czech Republic.
We also tested the hypothesis that the size of burbot home range would correlate with the fish mass. Burbot's strong attraction
to suitable refuges was the basis for our second hypotheses, that its diurnal behavior would reflect refuge availability in
the riverine environment. To test these hypotheses, we analyzed data on fish movements in relation to depth, velocity, substratum
size and river slope. During the night, burbot preferred deeper areas with lower slope and finer substrates than during daylight
hours. The home range was smaller in areas with low or zero slopes, and significantly increased with increasing river slope.
There was no relationship between home range size and fish mass. River slope appeared to be the main predictor of the burbot's

The cell division-related gene A (cdrA) of Helicobacter pylori is dispensable in vivo and unique in having a repressive role on cell division and long-term survival. To clarify its role, comparisons of the wildtype HPK5 and isogenic cdrA-disrupted mutant HPKT510 were examined by ultrastructural morphology, PBP profiles, and susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics during long-term cultivation. Ultrastructural analyses revealed that the shorter rods of HPKT510 had a slightly wider periplasmic space between the inner and the outer membrane than those of HPK5. Cell division of HPKT510 cells was complete even under high-salt conditions in which HPK5 cells became filamentous due to inhibition of division. The filamentous HPK5 cells constructed an inner membrane without a cell wall at the presumed division site. After 4 days of cultivation (the late stationary phase), most of the HPK5 cells turned into ghosts and aggregates, while some of the HPKT510 cells remained as curved rods, which coincided with the results of cell viability. HPKT510 cells became resistant to ampicillin killing compared to HPK5 cells, although their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and PBP profiles were not significantly different. These results suggest that the cdrA product represses cell division via inhibiting cell wall synthesis at division site. During infection in both mice and humans, inactivation of cdrA eventually gains biological aspects such as increased viability, long-term survival and tolerance to antibiotics and high-salt condition, which might enhance a persistent infection. 相似文献

Root Morphology and Anchorage of Six Native Tree Species from a Tropical Montane Forest and an Elfin Forest in Ecuador 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Root architecture of tree species was investigated at two different altitudes in tropical forests in Ecuador. Increasing altitude
was accompanied by higher wind speeds and more shallow soils, while slope angles of both sites were comparable (20–50°). Three
tree species typical for the montane forest at 1900 m (Graffenrieda emarginata (Ruiz & Pav.) Triana (Melastomataceae), Clethra revoluta (Ruiz & Pav.) Spreng. (Clethraceae), Vismia tomentosa Ruiz & Pav. (Clusiaceae)) and for the elfin forest at 3000 m (Weinmannia loxensis Harling (Cunoniaceae), Clusia spec. (Clusiacaea) Styrax foveolaria Perkins (Styraceae)) were examined. At 1900 m, 92% of the trees grew upright, in comparison to 52% at 3000 m. At 3000 m,
48% of the trees were inclined, lying or even partly uprooted. At this altitude, all trees with tap roots or with shoots connected
by coarse rhizomes, 83% of the trees with stilt roots, and 50% of the trees in which stems or roots were supported by other
trees grew upright, suggesting that these characteristics were relevant for tree stability. Root system morphology differed
markedly between altitudes. In contrast to 1900 m, where 20% of structural roots originated in the deeper mineral soil, root
origin at 3000 m was restricted to the forest floor. The mean ratio of root cross sectional area to tree height decreased
significantly from 6.1 × 10−3 m2 m−1 at 1900 m to 3.2 × 10−3 m2 m−1 at 3000 m. The extent of root asymmetry increased significantly from 0.29 at 1900 m to 0.62 at 3000 m. This was accompanied
by a significantly lower number of dominant roots at 3000 m (2.3 compared to 3.8 at 1900 m). In conclusion, native tree species
growing in tropical montane and elfin forests show a variety of root traits that improve tree stability. Root system asymmetry
is less important for tree stability where anchorage is provided by a deep and solid root–soil plate. When deep rooting is
impeded, root traits improving the horizontal extension of the root–soil plate are more pronounced or occur more frequently.
Furthermore, mutual mechanical support of roots and stems of neighboring trees seems to be an appropriate mechanism to provide
anchorage in soils with low bulk density and in environments with high wind speeds. 相似文献

采用盆栽控水的方法,研究干旱胁迫(80%FC、60%FC、40%FC和20%FC)及施氮(N0 0 g·pot-1、Nl 1.2 g·pot-1、Nm 3.6 g·pot-1和Nh 6.0 g·pot-1)对麻疯树幼苗叶、茎和根部主要渗透调节物质积累的影响.结果表明: 干旱胁迫条件下,麻疯树幼苗茎和根部的游离脯氨酸、可溶性蛋白和茎部可溶性糖大量积累,叶片中脯氨酸含量也随干旱胁迫程度的增加大幅度上升;Na+、Ca2+和Mg2+在麻疯树幼苗叶、茎和根中大量积累,而K+仅在茎中大量积累,叶片和根部K+含量略微上升.施氮对植株渗透调节物质的影响与干旱胁迫强度和施氮水平有关.在80%FC和60%FC水分条件下,增加N肥施用量能明显促进麻疯树幼苗各组分渗透调节物质的积累;在40%FC水分条件下,Nh处理对渗透调节物质积累的促进作用减弱;而在20%FC条件下,Nl处理植株的渗透调节能力较高,Nm和Nh处理对植株渗透调节的促进作用不明显甚至转为抑制. 相似文献

以胶州湾大沽河口湿地为研究区,利用TM遥感影像为数据源,运用ENVI 4.4软件在GIS技术支持下,提取1986、2002和2010年研究区自然湿地、人工湿地、非湿地3大景观类型的空间信息;运用景观格局指数原理和方法构建生态安全指数,定量分析研究区景观动态变化,阐明景观格局变化下,生态安全状况及驱动机制.结果表明:1986-2010年,研究区在自然与人为双重干扰下陆地面积萎缩,斑块数增多,优势景观消失,景观趋于复杂化、破碎化、分离化;1986-2010年,人类活动对景观干扰愈加明显,景观干扰指数与生态安全指数存在负相关性,研究区各景观损失度上升,生态安全指数下降,其中以自然湿地中河流与河口湿地和芦苇湿地景观的恶化程度最大.基于面积因素构建的各景观生态安全度依次为:非湿地>人工湿地>自然湿地;新建并发育的人工林景观和新整合的少海东湖人工湿地公园,在一定程度上弥补了研究区的生态损失,缓和了生态保护与经济发展之间的矛盾,探索出一条湿地保护新型道路. 相似文献
