Pilot studies demonstrate evidence that the electrophysiological processes associated with flash stimulation of the central nervous system (CNS) of rats, as seen in the recordings of visual-evoked potentials, may also be detectable using an ultrahigh frequency electromagnetic field (UHFEMF). Patterns of amplitude modulation of an applied UHFEMF, when recorded and averaged, show strong correlations with simultaneously recorded evoked potentials. The data support the hypothesis that the UHFEMF amplitude is altered in a dynamic fashion by the tissue's electrophysiological processes that are involved with the generation of CNS electric fields.  相似文献

SUMMARY The effects of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and temperature on the photosynthesis of two Vietnamese brown algae, Sargassum mcclurei and S. oligocystum (Fucales), were determined by field and laboratory measurements. Dissolved oxygen sensors and pulse‐amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry were used for the measurements of photosynthetic efficiency. A Diving‐PAM revealed that underwater measurements of the effective quantum yield (Φ PSII ) of both species declined with increasing incident PAR, with minimum Φ PSII occurring during noon to early afternoon. Φ PSII recovered in the evening, indicating photo‐adaptation to excessive PAR. In laboratory experiments, Φ PSII also decreased under continuous exposure to 1000 μmol photons m?2 s?1; and full recovery occurred after 12 h of dark acclimatization. The net photosynthesis – PAR experiments of S. mcclurei and S. oligocystum conducted at 28°C revealed that the net photosynthetic rate quickly increased at PAR below the saturation irradiance of 361 and 301 μmol photons m?2 s?1 and nearly saturated to maximum net photosynthetic rates of 385 and 292 μg O2 gww ? 1 min?1 without photoinhibition, respectively. Gross photosynthesis and dark respiration experiments determined over a range of temperatures (12–40°C), revealed that the maximum gross photosynthetic rates of 201 and 147 μg O2 gww ? 1 min?1 occurred at 32.9 and 30.7°C for S. mcclurei and S. oligocystum, respectively. The dark respiration rates increased exponentially over the temperature ranges examined. The estimated maximum value of the maximum quantum yield occurred at 19.3 and 20.0°C and was 0.76 and 0.74, respectively. Similar to the natural habitat of the study site, these two species tolerated the relatively high temperatures and broad range of PAR. The ability of these species to recover from exposure to high PAR is one of the mechanisms that allow them to flourish in the shallow water environment.  相似文献

Tonometry-based devices are valuable method for vascular function assessment and for measurement of blood pressure. However current design and calibration methods rely on simple models, neglecting key geometrical features, and anthropometric and property variability among patients. Understanding impact of these influences on tonometer measurement is thus essential for improving outcomes of current devices, and for proposing improved design. Towards this goal, we present a realistic computational model for tissue-device interaction using complete wrist section with hyperelastic material and frictional contact. Three different tonometry geometries were considered including a new design, and patient-specific influences incorporated via anthropometric and age-dependent tissue stiffness variations. The results indicated that the new design showed stable surface contact stress with minimum influence of the parameters analyzed. The computational predictions were validated with experimental data from a prototype based on the new design. Finally, we showed that the underlying mechanics of vascular unloading in tonometry to be fundamentally different from that of oscillatory method. Due to directional loading in tonometry, pulse amplitude maxima was observed to occur at a significantly lower compression level (around 31%) than previously reported, which can impact blood pressure calibration approaches based on maximum pulse pressure recordings.  相似文献

为获得斜生栅藻(Scendesmus obliquus)的氮生态幅,研究根据中华人民共和国地表水环境质量标准磷浓度界定,利用谢尔福德(Shelford)耐受定律进行曲线拟合对斜生栅藻在低磷(0.02 mg/L)、中磷(0.2 mg/L)和高磷(0.4 mg/L)三种不同磷浓度下氮的生态幅进行定量表达,获得三种磷起始条件下斜生栅藻生长的最佳氮浓度、氮适宜生长范围和氮耐受范围。研究表明,在三种磷条件下斜生栅藻生长的最佳氮浓度分别为1.02、8.91和18.05 mg/L,对应的最大比生长速率分别为(0.1420.006)、(0.3140.002)和(0.3460.007) /d,氮适宜生长范围分别为(0.521.52)、(4.4813.34)和(11.7224.38) mg/L,氮耐受限度分别为(0.022.02)、(0.0517.77)和(5.3930.71) mg/L。这表明富营养化水体可能引起斜生栅藻的大量生长、繁殖,也暗示了斜生栅藻能作为高氮水环境的一个良好指示生物。    相似文献

Detailed optical and EPR analyses of states induced in dark-adapted PS II membranes by cryogenic illumination permit characterization and quantification of all pigment derived donors and acceptors, as well as optically silent (in the visible, near infrared) species which are EPR active. Near complete turnover formation of QA is seen in all centers, but with variable efficiency, depending on the donor species. In minimally detergent-exposed PS II membranes, negligible (< 5%) oxidation of chlorophyll or carotenoid centers occurs for illumination temperatures 5-20 K. An optically silent electron donor to P680+ is observed with the same decay kinetics as the S1 split signal. Cryogenic donors to P680+ seen are: (i) transient (t1/2 ∼ 150 s) tyrosine related species, including ‘split signals’ (∼ 15% total centers), (ii) reduced cytochrome b559 (∼ 30-50% centers), and (iii) an organic donor, possibly an amino acid side chain, (∼ 30% centers).  相似文献

In recent years, a growing number of protein folding studies have focused on the unfolded state, which is now recognized as playing a major role in the folding process. Some of these studies show that interactions occurring in the unfolded state can significantly affect the stability and kinetics of the protein folding reaction. In this study, we modeled the effect of electrostatic interactions, both native and nonnative, on the folding of three protein systems that underwent selective charge neutralization or reversal or complete charge suppression. In the case of the N-terminal L9 protein domain, our results directly attribute the increase in thermodynamic stability to destabilization of the unfolded ensemble, reaffirming the experimental observations. These results provide a deeper structural insight into the ensemble of the unfolded state and predict a new mutation site for increased protein stability. In the second case, charge reversal mutations of RNase Sa affected protein stability, with the destabilizing mutations being less destabilizing at higher salt concentrations, indicating the formation of charge-charge interactions in the unfolded state. In the N-terminal L9 and RNase Sa systems, changes in electrostatic interactions in the unfolded state that cause an increase in free energy had an overall compaction effect that suggests a decrease in entropy. In the third case, in which we compared the β-lactalbumin and hen egg-white lysozyme protein homologues, we successfully eliminated differences between the folding kinetics of the two systems by suppressing electrostatic interactions, supporting previously reported findings. Our coarse-grained molecular dynamics study not only reproduces experimentally reported findings but also provides a detailed molecular understanding of the elusive unfolded-state ensemble and how charge-charge interactions can modulate the biophysical characteristics of folding.  相似文献

A robotic fish driven by oscillating fins, "Cownose Ray-I", is developed, which is in dorsoventrally flattened shape withouta tail. The robotic fish is composed of a body and two lateral fins. A three-factor kinematic model is established and used in thedesign of a mechanism. By controlling the three kinematic parameters, the robotic fish can accelerate and maneuver. Forwardvelocity is dependent on the largest amplitude and the number of waves in the fins, while the relative contribution of fin beatfrequency to the forward velocity of the robotic fish is different from the usual result. On the other hand, experimental results onmaneuvering show that phase difference has a stronger effect on swerving than the largest amplitude to some extent. In addition,as propulsion waves pass from the trailing edge to the leading edge, the robotic fish attains a backward velocity of 0. 15 m·s-1.  相似文献

As a result of the global decline of fish stocks, an increasing number of fish species are becoming targets of heavy exploitation, often concomitantly with a lack of biological knowledge on their structure and demographics. Here we present 11 new polymorphic microsatellite loci, isolated from the slinger sea bream (Chrysoblephus puniceus, Sparidae), a relatively recent target of coastal fisheries in eastern South Africa. Levels of genetic diversity were assessed in 39 individuals collected from the KwaZulu-Natal coast (Park Rynie, South Africa). Observed and expected heterozygosities varied between 0.39 and 0.97 and between 0.53 and 0.96, respectively. One locus (SL35) showed significant heterozygote deficiency and linkage disequilibrium was detected between SL35 and SL1. Importantly, five of these microsatellites cross-amplify in Cheimerius nufar, a sympatric species also subjected to exploitation.  相似文献

In Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, the loop domain (aa 1–70) of the phycobilisome core-membrane linker, LCM, was found to interact with the glycosyl transferase homolog, Sll1466. Growth of a Sll1466 knock-out mutant was slightly faster in low light, but strongly inhibited in high light; the phenotype is discussed in relation to the regulation of light energy transfer to photosystem II. At the molecular level, the mutant shows the following changes compared to the wild type: (1) a smaller size and higher mobility of phycobilisomes on the thylakoid membrane, and (2) a changed lipid composition of the thylakoid membrane, especially decreased amounts of digalactosyl diacylglycerol. These results indicate a profound regulatory role for Sll1466 in regulating photosynthetic energy transfer.  相似文献
