This paper presents a further development of the mechanism for the detection of weak magnetic fields proposed by [Lednev (1991): Bioelectromagnetics 12:71–75]. The fraction of excited oscillator states of an unhydrated ion is studied in a dynamic model driven by the predicted (time-varying) transition probability in the presence of thermal noise and an unspecified excitation mechanism. The main results of Lednev are confirmed. In addition, I conclude that ultraharmonic and ultrasubharmonic resonances may also be observed, provided that the response time of the dynamic system is similar to the period of the oscillating magnetic field. I discuss the time scales involved in the mechanism and present theoretical constraints on these parameters. The crucial requirement for the theory's applicability is that the lifetime of the excited states of the affected ion oscillator exceeds the period of the applied magnetic field. Numerical solutions of the dynamic system are given and are shown to correspond well to theoretical expectations. The main discrepancy between the theories of Lednev and of Blanchard and Blackman [Blanchard and Blackman (1994): Bioelectromagnetics 15:217–238] appears to be due to an inconsistency in the latter paper. The general problem of robust analysis of experimental data is discussed, and I suggest a test of compliance with the Lednev model that is independent of all parameters except for the ratio of oscillating and static field strength (B1/B0) for many resonance conditions and experimental models. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A series of four experiments was performed to determine whether acute exposure to a range of 50 Hz magnetic fields had any effect on a learning task in adult male CD1 mice. A radial-arm maze placed within the bore of an electromagnet was used to assess spatial discrimination learning for food reward. Subjects were reduced to 85% of their free-feeding weight and were placed in the maze for up to 15 minutes each day for 10 days. Performance of the task was measured by using maximum likelihood techniques to calculate the probability that an animal would not reenter any given arm of the maze. Experimental subjects were exposed to a vertical, 50 Hz sinusoidal magnetic field at 5 μT, 50 μT, 0.5 mT, or 5.0 mT (rms). Control subjects were exposed only to a background time-varying field of less than 50 nT and the ambient static field of about 40 μT. The variation in the applied magnetic field was less than 5% except at the ends of the arms, where it approached 10%. It was found that all eight groups of subjects (n = 10 in all cases) showed similar increases in performance with testing, and the acquisition curve for each group of experimental subjects was not significantly different from that of their control group (P > 0.05 in all cases). It was concluded that exposure had no effect on learning at any flux density. This result is contrary to the findings of a number of preliminary studies, although other studies have reported that magnetic fields do not affect spatial learning in adult male rodents. It is possible that differences between experimental conditions might explain some of this apparent discrepancy. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Musca domestica flies that were exposed to a uniform vertical 10 Hz electric square-wave field of 1 kVm−1 changed the period length of their circadian locomotor activity rhythm. Under constant conditions, the clock of short-period flies was slowed down by the field, whereas the clock of long-period flies either was affected only scarcely (experiments at about 19°C) or ran faster (experiments at 25°C). If the field was applied for only 12 h daily, then 30–40% of the flies were synchronized. Thus, the field could function as a weak “Zeitgeber” (synchronizer). If the field was increased to 10 kVm−1, then 50–70% of the flies were synchronized. Flies avoided becoming active around the onset of the 12 h period of exposure to a 10 Hz field. The results of these experiments are discussed with respect to similar experiments by Wever on the effects of exposure to a 10 Hz field on the circadian system of man. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In studies investigating adverse reproductive outcomes associated with video display terminal (VDT) usage, amounts of time spent in front of a VDT or magnetic field (MF) levels in front of the VDT are used as surrogate measures of subject's MF exposure. However, the relevance of such surrogates to actual exposures has not been demonstrated, and the validity of the use of such measures as a surrogate for the actual MF exposure is only speculative. This study examines 1) measurements of MFs at frequencies of approximately 30–1000 Hz at a fixed distance from the VDTs, 2) reported hours of VDT use, and 3) reported distance between the VDT and the subject's waist as surrogate measures for the average MF exposure level of a VDT user during one 8 h workday. The results showed a weak correlation between the average exposure level of a VDT user and the MF 46 cm from a VDT (R = 0.52, n = 67, P < 0.001). This study showed no association between self-reported hours of VDT usage, or self-reported distance between waist and VDT, and the average MF exposures. Moreover, individuals' average MF exposures did not seem to be affected by other variables, such as position of a VDT on the desk, hours of desk use, and the VDT type (color vs. monochrome). These findings indicate that VDT exposures within office settings are complex and cannot be easily predicted by surrogates. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

It has been suggested that “double-wound” (bifilar) exposure coils are capable of producing a sham environment in which hum and vibration will be “similar” to the field-exposed condition. We found by direct measurements in a bifilar coil system that vibration amplitude in sham and exposed conditions differed by a factor of 50 when our test system was driven at B = 10 mT. We also found that the normal laboratory environment can include vibrations of an intensity similar to that produced by the exposure system, although not necessarily of similar spectral distribution. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

One critical biophysical feature of environmental-level magnetic field (MF) interactions with biological systems is the time-scale of interaction. A recently proposed fast/slow hypothesis states that a fast mechanism can only sense the instantaneous absolute value of the MF, and that a slow mechanism is potentially capable of sensing features such as frequency and relative orientation and magnitude of the field components. Here we applied the fast/slow hypothesis to a breast cancer model system: A 1.2 μT(rms), 60-Hz field inhibits tamoxifen’s (TAM’s) cytostatic action in MCF-7 cells via a MF interaction. We measured the growth of MCF-7 cells treated with TAM over 7 d, within different MFs: a sinusoidal, 60-Hz, 0.2-μT(rms) field; a sinusoidal, 60-Hz, 1.2-μT(rms) field; and a full-wave rectified version of the 1.2-μT(rms) sinusoidal field. A fast mechanism should not be able to distinguish between the latter two exposures. We observe that the rectified 1.2-μT field does not inhibit TAM’s action, but that the 1.2-μT sinusoidal field does. Therefore, the 1.2-μT MF inhibition of TAM’s cytostatic action operates via a relatively slow mechanism, and we predict that there exists a biologically dynamic complex capable of sensing a 1.2-μT, 60-Hz sinusoidal MF with an intrinsic time-scale of 17 ms or longer, the period of the 60-Hz applied field.  相似文献

The effects of different non-bonded parameters of force fields for NMR structure calculation on the quality of the resulting NMR solution structures were investigated using Interleukin 4 as a model system. NMR structure ensembles were calculated with an ab initio protocol using torsion angle dynamics. The calculations were repeated with five different non-bonded energy functions and parameters. The resulting ensembles were compared with the available X-ray structures, and their quality was assessed with common structure validation programs. In addition, the impact of torsion angle restraints and dihedral energy terms for the sidechains and the backbone was studied. The further improvement of the quality by refinement in explicit solvent was demonstrated. The optimal parameters, including those necessary for water refinement, are available in the new version of the PARALLHDG force field.  相似文献

Visual cortical simple cells have been experimentally shown to reveal non-trivial spatio-temporal orientation tuning functions comprising different phases of specifically tuned enhanced and suppressed activity. A recently developed analytical method based on nonlinear neural field models suggests that such space-time responses should be approximately separable into a sum of temporally amplitude modulated Gaussian spatial components. In the present work, we investigate this possibility by means of numerical fits of sums of Gaussians to response functions observed in experiments and computer simulations. Because the theory relates each single component to a particular connectivity kernel between the underlying cell classes shaping the response, the relative contribution of feedforward and cortex-intrinsical excitatory and inhibitory feedback mechanisms to single cell tuning can be approached and quantified in experimental data.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the potential of a permanent magnetic field to inhibit the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) in a canine model. The magnetic field was created by 72 domino-sized ceramic magnets with surface field strength of 1100 G (0.11 T). The magnetic field strength at the surface of the mattress was 450-500 G (45-50 mT) and was equally distributed over the mattress surface. Eighteen animals had closed resection of their right stifle anterior cruciate ligament. Their kennel floors were covered in one of three ways: no floor mattress (OA) (N = 6); a floor mattress with domino-sized ceramic pieces placed between two layers of foam (sham control OA-MAT) (N = 6); or a floor mattress with domino-sized ceramic permanent magnets placed between two layers of foam (OA-MAT-MAG) (N = 6). Animals were kept in their cages except for 4 h of exercise each day. The left stifle of six animals served as the normal control. The stifle joints were examined at 12 weeks for synovial effusion, gross anatomic appearance, microscopic anatomic appearance (Mankin score), and metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and -3. Macroscopically, the OA-MAT-MAG group appeared to have less synovitis, less synovial effusion, less disruption of the cartilage surface, and less cartilage ulceration than did the OA group or the control mattress group. The mean Mankin score for the OA-MAT-MAG group was less than that for the OA group (4.2 +/- 0.8 vs. 6.7 +/- 0.3; P <.05) and the control mattress group (4.2 +/- 0.8 vs. 5.2 +/- 0.8; P >.05), but greater than that for the normal left group (4.2 +/- 0.8 vs. 1.0 +/- 0.4; P <.05). These scores show a trend of improvement for OA-MAT-MAG group but the difference with the sham control OA-MAT group was not statistically significant. In immunohistochemical studies, the OA-MAT-MAG group cartilage was stained less heavily for MMP-1 and MMP-3 than were the OA group cartilage and the control mattress group cartilage, but did not differ significantly in MMP-1 and MMP-3 from the normal left group cartilage. The OA-MAT-MAG group did not differ from the normal left group in MMP-3 as determined by Western blot analysis. The study suggests that OA of the medial femoral condyle developed in a canine model exposed to a magnetic field may be inhibited beyond the benefit provided by mattress. Further studies are needed to delineate more precisely the effect of the magnetic field in reducing the severity of OA.  相似文献

Electromagnetic field exposure and health among RF plastic sealer operators   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Operators of RF plastic sealers (RF operators) are an occupational category highly exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. The aim of the present study was to make an appropriate exposure assessment of RF welding and examine the health status of the operators. In total, 35 RF operators and 37 controls were included. The leakage fields (electric and magnetic field strength) were measured, as well as induced and contact current. Information about welding time and productivity was used to calculate time integrated exposure. A neurophysiological examination and 24 h ECG were also carried out. The participants also had to answer a questionnaire about subjective symptoms. The measurements showed that RF operators were exposed to rather intense electric and magnetic fields. The mean values of the calculated 6 min, spatially averaged E and H field strengths, in line with ICNIRP reference levels, are 107 V/m and 0.24 A/m, respectively. The maximum measured field strengths were 2 kV/m and 1.5 A/m, respectively. The induced current in ankles and wrists varied, depending on the work situation, with a mean value of 101 mA and a maximum measured value of 1 A. In total, 11 out of 46 measured RF plastic sealers exceeded the ICNIRP reference levels. RF operators, especially the ready made clothing workers had a slightly disturbed two-point discrimination ability compared to a control group. A nonsignificant difference between RF operators and controls was found in the prevalence of subjective symptoms, but the time integrated exposure parameters seem to be of importance to the prevalence of some subjective symptoms: fatigue, headaches, and warmth sensations in the hands. Further, RF operators had a significantly lower heart rate (24 h registration) and more episodes of bradycardia compared to controls.  相似文献
