The effects of 60 Hz magnetic fields of 5 μT (50 mG) or less on biological structures holding magnetite (Fe3O4) are shown to be much smaller than that from thermal agitation; hence such interactions cannot be expected to be biologically significant. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Experiments on the effects of extremely-low-frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields on cells of the immune system, T-lymphocytes in particular, suggest that the external field interacts with the cell at the level of intracellular signal transduction pathways. These are directly connected with changes in the calcium-signaling processes of the cell. Based on these findings, a theoretical model for receptor-controlled cytosolic calcium oscillations and for external influences on the signal transduction pathway is presented. We discuss the possibility that the external field acts on the kinetics of the signal transduction between the activated receptors at the cell membrane and the G-proteins. It is shown that, depending on the specific combination of cell internal biochemical and external physical parameters, entirely different responses of the cell can occur. We compare the effects of a coherent (periodic) modulation and of incoherent perturbations (noise). The model and the calculations are based on the theory of self-sustained, nonlinear oscillators. It is argued that these systems form an ideal basis for information-encoding processes in biological systems. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to understand whether 50 Hz electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are involved in producing bioeffects by exposing human erythrocytes in vitro. The study evaluated some key glycolytic enzymes, glucose consumption, lactate production, energy charge, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, and reduced glutathione levels. all of which are biochemical parameters significant to erythrocyte function. Cells exposed to individual or superimposed EMFs have not shown any significant difference compared with the controls. © 1993 Wiley-Liss. Inc.  相似文献

Flow cytometry (FCM) was performed to monitor the cellular effects of extremely-low-frequency magnetic field on mouse spermatogenesis. Groups of five male hybrid F1 mice aged 8–10 weeks were exposed to 50 Hz magnetic field. The strength of the magnetic field was 1.7 mT. Exposure times of 2 and 4 h were chosen. FCM measurements were performed 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days after treatment. For each experimental point, a sham-treated group was used as a control. The possible effects were studied by analyzing the DNA content distribution of the different cell types involved in spermatogenesis and using the elongated spermatids as the reference population. The relative frequencies of the various testicular cell types were calculated using specific software. In groups exposed for 2 h, no effects were observed. In groups exposed for 4 h, a statistically significant (P < 0.001) decrease in elongated spermatids was observed at 28 days after treatment. This change suggests a possible cytotoxic and/or cytostatic effect on differentiating spermatogonia. However, further studies are being carried out to investigate the effects of longer exposure times. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance guidance in particle therapy has the potential to improve the current performance of clinical workflows. However, the presence of magnetic fields challenges the current algorithms for treatment planning. To ensure proper dose calculations, compensation methods are required to guarantee that the maximum deposited energy of deflected beams lies in the target volume. In addition, proper modifications of the intrinsic dose calculation engines, accounting for magnetic fields, are needed. In this work, an algorithm for proton treatment planning in magnetic fields was implemented in a research treatment planning system (TPS), matRad. Setup-specific look up tables were generated using a validated MC model for a clinical proton beamline (62.4 – 215.7 MeV) interacting with a dipole magnet (B = 0–1 T). The algorithm was successfully benchmarked against MC simulations in water, showing gamma index (2%/2mm) global pass rates higher than 96% for different plan configurations. Additionally, absorbed depth doses were compared with experimental measurements in water. Differences within 2% and 3.5% in the Bragg peak and entrance regions, respectively, were found. Finally, treatment plans were generated and optimized for magnetic field strengths of 0 and 1 T to assess the performance of the proposed model. Equivalent treatment plans and dose volume histograms were achieved, independently of the magnetic field strength. Differences lower than 1.5% for plan quality indicators (D2%, D50%, D90%, V95% and V105%) in water, a TG119 phantom and an exemplary prostate patient case were obtained. More complex treatment planning studies are foreseen to establish the limits of applicability of the proposed model.  相似文献

Previous studies have indicated that there is no consensus on the effects of extremely low‐frequency electromagnetic (ELF‐EMF) exposure on the cardiovascular system. This study aimed to explore the short‐term effect of ELF‐EMF exposure on heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV). The sample consisted of 34 healthy males aged 18–27 years. The participants were randomly assigned to the EMF (n = 17) or the Sham group (n = 17). We employed a double‐blind repeated‐measures design consisting of three 5 min experimental periods. The chest region of each individual in the EMF group was exposed to 50 Hz, 28 μT, linear polarized, continuous EMF during the EMF exposure period. HR and HRV data were recorded continuously by using a photoplethysmography sensor. Within‐subject statistical analysis indicated a significant HR deceleration in both the EMF and Sham groups. However, the standard deviation of the NN intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), low‐frequency (LF), and high‐frequency (HF) powers increased only in the EMF group and remained stable in the Sham group. We also compared the same HRV indices measured during the EMF and Sham periods between the two experimental groups. The between‐subject analysis results demonstrated significantly higher SDNN, RMSSD, LF, and HF values in the EMF group than in the Sham group. The LF/HF ratio did not change significantly within and between groups. On the basis of these results, we concluded that short‐term exposure of the chest region to ELF‐EMF could potentially enhance parasympathetic predominance during the resting condition. Abstract

New records of entomogenous fungi. — New records of six entomogenous fungi, three Ascomycetes (Cordyceps lloydii Fawcett, C. memorabilis Ces., C. riverae Pacioni) and three Deuteromycetes (Akantomyces aranearum (Petch) Mains, Hirsutella citriformis Speare, Troglobiomyces guignardii (Maheu) Pacioni) are given. The new records allow to expand the known area of distribution of these parasites, to confirm the particular condition for fructification needed by some of them and to give new details for the less common species.  相似文献

In recent years, the exposure of organisms to static magnetic fields (SMFs) is continuously increasing. Thus, we investigated the effect of chronic exposure to a 2 mT SMF on in vitro cultured swine granulosa cells (GCs). In particular, the culture expansion (cell viability and doubling time), the cell phenotype (cell morphology and orientation, actin and α-tubulin cytoskeleton), the cell metabolism (intracellular Ca2+ concentration [Ca2+]i and mitochondrial activity) and the cell function (endocrine activity) were assessed. It has been found that the exposure to the field did not affect the cell viability, but the doubling time was significantly reduced (p < 0.05) in exposed samples after 72 h of culture. At the same time, the cell length and thickness significantly changed (p < 0.05), while the cell orientation was unaffected. Evident modifications were induced on actin and α-tubulin cytoskeleton after 3 days of exposure and, simultaneously, a change in [Ca2+]i and mitochondrial activity started to become evident. Finally, the SMF exposure of GCs longer than 72 h determined a significant alteration of progesterone and estrogen production (p < 0.05). In conclusion, our results demonstrate that the chronic exposure of swine GCs to a 2 mT SMF exerts a negative effect on cell proliferation, morphology, biochemistry and endocrine function in an in vitro model.  相似文献

Understanding the biological mechanisms by which extremely low-frequency (ELF, < 300 Hz) magnetic fields (MFs) interact with human brain activity is an active field of research. Such knowledge is required by international agencies providing guidelines for general public and workers exposure to ELF MFs (such as ICNIRP, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection). The identification of these interaction mechanisms is extremely challenging, since the effects of ELF MF exposure need to be monitored and understood at very different spatial (from micrometers to centimeters) and temporal (from milliseconds to minutes) scales. One possibility to overcome these issues is to develop biophysical models, based on the systems of mathematical equations describing the electric or metabolic activity of the brain tissue. Biophysical models of the brain activity offer the possibility to simulate how the brain tissue interacts with ELF MFs, in order to gain new insights into experimental data, and to test novel hypotheses regarding interaction mechanisms. This paper presents novel hypotheses regarding the effects of power line (60 Hz in North America) MFs on human brain activity, with arguments from biophysical models. We suggest a hypothetic chain of events that could bridge MF exposure with detectable effects on human neurophysiology. We also suggest novel directions of research in order to reach a convergence of biophysical models of brain activity and corresponding experimental data to identify interaction mechanisms.  相似文献
