Anacamptis pyramidalis is a variable and wide-spread European-Mediterranean taxon. Beside a dominant cytotype with 2n = 36 it includes cytotypes with 2n = 54 and 63 in northern Tuscany (and the Eastern Pyrenees) and one with 2n = 72 on Malta. In contrast,A. urvilleana, formerly often misidentified and included inA. pyramidalis, is a monomorphic and distinct species, endemic to the Maltese Islands. It has 2n = 36, can be clearly separated by morphological and anatomical features and is isolated from partly sympatric populations ofA. pyramidalis with 2n = 72 by differences in chromosome number, flowering time and habitat preference. 相似文献

In his mathematical treatment of Fisher's ideas on sexual selection (so-called runaway selection) Lande (1981) predicted that males may evolve increasingly elaborate sexual characters despite opposing viability selection as a consequence of the associated costs. Lande thereby assumed that female mate preferences are not subject to selection since (1) females are all inseminated and (2) the quantity and quality of their offspring are independent of the female's mate preferences. Kirkpatrick (1985) removed the latter assumption and investigated the consequences for the mean phenotype with respect to both female and male traits. He also explored the dynamics of the (co)-variance matrix by numerical methods. In this paper we consider a simpler model with just two multi-allelic loci. This enables us to derive explicit expressions for (co)-variances under steady state conditions. Rather than assume natural selection through differential fertility (as in Kirkpatrick, 1985), we take sexual selection on females into account by modelling the preference-dependent risk that females remain unmated. We argue that this wallflower effect is a realistic feature of any mating system, since it merely depends on the existence of (1) variation in mating preferences and (2) a finite mating season. Our approach provided an insight into the dynamic behaviour of the means of the phenotypes. This is because the dynamics of the means depend on the steady state (co)-variance matrix. Thus, an insight into the former requires explicit expressions for the latter. Whereas Lande and Kirkpatrick predicted runaway processes, despite opposing viability selection, our model predicts a globally stable steady state, i.e. no runaway, even without opposing viability selection (under the assumption of an asymptotically stable steady state of the (co)-variances. Admittedly, we have no analytic proof of this stability but only support for it, based on simulations.) The absence of the runaway processes in our model is caused by the wallflower effect, since it imposes constraints on the steady state of the (co)-variance matrix. When mutational input applies to female traits but not to male traits, explicit expressions for the (co)-variances under steady state conditions can be derived, and these show that: (1) both the genetic covariance and the variance of male traits are equal to zero, but (2) the variance of the female trait exceeds to zero. Should there be mutational input influencing the male trait, then these results would suggest that the male-to-female ratio of variances is much smaller than unity. The electrical activity of single olfactory receptor neurons in male soybean looper (SBL) Pseudoplusia includens(Walker) and cabbage looper (CL) Trihoplusia ni(Hübner) moths was evaluated in response to stimulation with fixed amounts of the individual components of their respective pheromone blends. In common with earlier observations in the CL, there are at least two classes of morphologically distinct pheromone sensitive sensilla on the antenna of male SBL, each of which contains two olfactory receptor neurons. In both species, one class of sensilla contains an olfactory receptor neuron sensitive to (Z)-7-dodecen-1-ol acetate (Z-7, 12:AC), the major component in each insect's blend, and a companion receptor neuron which is sensitive to (Z)-7-dodecen-1-ol (Z7,12: OH). In both species the second class of sensilla contains an olfactory receptor neuron which is sensitive to one of the minor components of the pheromone blend. (Z)-5-dodecen-1-ol acetate (Z-5,12:AC) is an effective stimulus in SBL, whereas (Z)-7-tetradecen-1-ol acetate (Z-7,14:AC) is an effective stimulus in CL. However, these two stimulatory compounds have been identified only in the female CL gland; neither has been found in the SBL gland. Thus, in contrast to the CL, which has receptor neurons which are responsive exclusively to conspecific pheromone components, the SBL has a class of receptor neurons which is responsive to a minor component of another species' pheromone blend. Field-trapping assays in which Z-5,12:AC is added to the SBL blend suggest that this single CL component is a powerful inhibitor of male SBL behavioral responses to conspecific pheromone blends. The difference observed in the specificity of the receptor neurons in this second class of sensilla are thus believed to play an integral role in the isolation processes that are maintained between these two species and may well account for the observed behavioral differences in their responses to heterospecific pheromone blends. 相似文献

The contemporary pattern of intraspecific genetic variation can indicate the relative role of gene flow and local differentiation in shaping the evolutionary history and future trajectory of a species. To assess the recent influence of contrasting life history and demographic characteristics on genetic structure within a group of closely related species, patterns of genetic differentiation (F(ST) and related statistics) and isolation by distance (IBD) were compared among 17 congeneric herbaceous plant species. Data came from 35 published studies of 16 species, and a previously unpublished analysis of chloroplast genetic variation in the rare endemic Silene rotundifolia. Among-population genetic variance was most strongly influenced by the type of genetic marker used; cytoplasmic markers showed larger values than allozyme and anonymous nuclear markers. Other independently significant factors were geographical range size and, for allozyme studies, reproductive system; in particular, endemism and hermaphroditism were associated with higher among-population genetic variance, whereas large native geographical range and dioecy were associated with lower among-population variance. Over equivalent spatial scales, dioecious populations also showed weaker IBD than hermaphrodites, perhaps because increased population transience and/or variance in the spatial pattern of gene flow are more closely associated with dioecy in this genus. Invasive populations had both highly variable among-population genetic variance, and no evidence for IBD, consistent with nonequilibrium conditions. Other analysed factors including predominant pollinator had no discernable influence on genetic structure or patterns of IBD. In general, this comparative approach appears to be valuable for synthesizing the complementary information provided by F-statistics and IBD, and for indicating the relative importance of particular biological factors in shaping genetic variation within different species of a closely related plant group. 相似文献

2009年6月12日,江苏确诊首例甲型H1N1(2009)病例。通过细胞和鸡胚分离系统,我们分离到一株具有较高血凝活性的病毒,命名为A/Jiangsu/1/2009。为了跟踪病毒的变异情况,我们开展了病毒的全基因组测序工作,在此基础上对其血凝素基因(Haemagglutinin,HA)的遗传特性进行了详细研究。分离株HA蛋白不具有多碱基HA裂解位点,具有低致病性流感病毒特点。与参考株A/California/04/2009相比,分离株A/Jiangsu/1/2009HA蛋白的有4个氨基酸发生了突变,但都不在已知的抗原位点上。分离株有5个潜在糖基化位点,这与近年来古典猪H1N1和北美三源重配猪H1病毒完全一致,保留了古典猪H1的特点。与禽流感H1病毒相比,分离株HA蛋白受体结合位点上的E190D和G225D发生突变,这可能成为新甲型H1N1(2009)在人际间传播的一个重要分子基础。此外,其它受体结合位点上相关氨基酸同时具有人和猪流感病毒的特点。本研究首次对早期流行的甲型H1N1(2009)流感病毒的HA蛋白的分子遗传特征进行了详细研究,对进一步监测病原变异具有重要指导意义。 相似文献

We isolated a novel lactic acid bacterium from a Korean traditional fermented food, soybean paste. The newly isolated strain,
dubbed RKY2, grew well on glucose, sucrose, galactose, and fructose, but it could not utilize xylose, starch, or glycerol.
When the partially amplified 16S rDNA sequence (772 bp) of the strain RKY2 was compared with 10 reference strains, it was
found to be most similar toLactobacillus pentosus JCM 1588T, with 99.74% similarity. Therefore, the strain RKY2 was renamedLactobacillus sp. RKY2, which has been deposited in the Korean Collection for Type Cultures as KCTC 10353BP.Lactobacillus sp. RKY2 was found to be a homofermentative lactic acid bacterium, because its end-product from glucose metabolism was found
to be mainly lactic acid. It could produce more than 90 g/L of lactic acid from MRS medium supplemented with 100 g/L of glucose,

Summary We have developed a novel isolation technique for harvesting human capillary endothelial cells. We compared the use of eitherUlex Europaeus Agglutinin (UEA) lectin or anti-platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM) antibody conjugated to magnetic beads
for the ability to isolate and maintain pure cultures of human capillary endothelial cells. Cells isolated using either method
actively scavenged DiI-acetylated-low density lipoprotein and expressed von Willebrand factor (vWf) up to four passages as
assessed by immunofluorescent labeling. Endothelial cells isolated using the anti-PECAM antibody method maintained these endothelial-specific
properties for up to 12 passages while the percentage of UEA selected cells expressing these properties decreased during increasing
passage number. Furthermore, while both techniques yielded cells that bind UEA at Passage six, only the antibody selected
cells expressed the normal pattern of endothelial-specific cellular adhesion molecules as assessed by flow cytometry. Both
cell isolates were cultured within a three-dimensional matrix of type I collagen, the antibody selected cells formed tubelike
structures within 2 days, while the lectin selected cells did not. The antibody selected capillary endothelial cells were
transduced with a retroviral vector containing the human growth hormone cDNA and were found to secrete growth hormone from
both two- and three-dimensional cultures. We propose that anti-PECAM antibodies linked to a solid support provide a highly
selective step in the isolation and maintenance of pure populations of human capillary endothelial cells from abdominal wall

Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817–1911), friend and scientific confidant of Charles Darwin, lectured in 1866 on ‘Insular floras’ at the Annual Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. His interest and knowledge of islands had been aroused when he travelled to the Antarctic aboard the Erebus under Sir James Clark Ross from 1839–43. On his return, Darwin passed on to Hooker the botanical collections he had made on the Beagle voyage, including those from the Galapagos. Hooker's conclusions from these and from his own material and experiences were important to Darwin as he developed the ideas that culminated in the publication of the Origin of Species. Rapid speciation in Lake Victoria cichlid fish of the genus Pundamilia may be facilitated by sexual selection: female mate choice exerts sexual selection on male nuptial coloration within species and maintains reproductive isolation between species. However, declining water transparency coincides with increasingly dull coloration and increasing hybridization. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism underlying this pattern in Pundamilia nyererei, a species that interbreeds with a sister species in turbid but not in clear water. We compared measures of intraspecific sexual selection between two populations from locations that differ in water transparency. First, in laboratory mate‐choice experiments, conducted in clear water and under broad‐spectrum illumination, we found that females originating from turbid water have significantly weaker preferences for male coloration than females originating from clear water. Second, both the hue and body coverage of male coloration differ between populations, which is consistent with adaptation to different photic habitats. These findings suggest that the observed relationship between male coloration and water transparency is not mediated by environmental variation alone. 从疫病发病严重田块的健康辣椒植株根际分离到98株拮抗菌,从中筛选出两株具有广谱抗性并可在贫营养条件下生长良好的高效拮抗菌株HL-3和LZ-8.通过形态观察、生理生化特性和16S rDNA序列分析,确定HL-3为多粘类芽孢杆菌,LZ-8为短小芽孢杆菌.HL-3和LZ-8对辣椒疫霉菌丝生长抑制率分别为72%和68%.HL-3和LZ-8还对黄瓜枯萎病菌、辣椒枯萎病菌、棉花黄萎病菌、黄瓜立枯病菌、烟草黑胫病菌和番茄青枯病菌具有显著的抑制作用.盆栽试验表明,HL-3和LZ-8对辣椒苗期疫病防治效果分别为72%和83%,且对辣椒生长表现出明显的促生作用. 相似文献
