The African baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) are drought resistant green-stemmed succulent plants which grow in the arid and semi-arid regions of Africa. Photosynthesis in the stems of green-stemmed plants is known to contribute to plant carbon gain especially during leafless periods. To study the contribution of stem photosynthesis in stem succulent plants, the height and stem diameter of baobab and castor bean plants grown in the greenhouse were measured. The plants were completely defoliated and subjected to different treatments: Watered with open stems (WO), watered and stems covered with aluminium foil (WC) to achieve 100% light exclusion, drought and open (DO) and drought and covered (DC). Stem coverage with aluminium foil resulted in a higher stem height and diameter during drought for baobab with similar trends seen in castor bean. Light exclusion resulted in a significantly lower bud DW production and enrichment in 13C in bud dry matter of castor bean and in stem dry matter of baobab. These show that corticular photosynthesis contributes in carbon gain in these species.  相似文献

The reserve site selection problem is to select sites for the establishment of biological reserves with the goal to maximize the number of species contained in the reserves. When species distributions are known, this corresponds to the maximal coverage problem. In practice, knowledge of species distributions may be incomplete and only incidence probabilities are available. In this case, the goal is to maximize the expected number of species contained in the reserves. This is called the maximal expected coverage problem. This paper describes and illustrates a formal approach to assess the value of information, such as site surveys or species surveys, in this problem.  相似文献

Granivory is an important interaction in the arid and semi-arid zones of the world, since seeds form an abundant and nutritious resource in these areas. While species of the genus Pogonomyrmex have been studied in detail as seed predators, their impact on seed abundance in the soil has not yet been explored in sufficient depth. We studied the impact of the harvesting activities of the ant Pogonomyrmex barbatus on seed abundance in the soil of the Zapotitlán valley, Mexico. We found that P. barbatus activity significantly impacts the abundance of seeds in the soil, which is lower in the sites where P. barbatus forages than it is in sites with no recorded foraging. We also found that P. barbatus distributes intact seeds of three tree species, two of which are nurse plants, and could consequently be promoting the establishment of these species. Using tools derived from graph theory, we observed that the ant-seed interactions exhibit a nested pattern; where more depredated seed species seem to be the more spatially abundant in the environment. This study illustrates the complex foraging ecology of the harvester ant P. barbatus and elucidates its effect on the soil seed bank in a semi-arid environment.  相似文献

Facultative male incubation and allofeeding are thought to be behavioral adaptations by which male songbirds maximize their fitness by reducing the energetic stress of their mates. However, few data are available for most species that exhibit these behaviors so the extent to which they might enhance male fitness remains unclear. Among North American sparrows, male incubation is known in four species, but the relative contributions of each sex have been estimated for only one species. We quantified biparental incubation and allofeeding in Sagebrush Brewer's Sparrows (Spizella breweri breweri) with 24‐h video surveillance of nests (N = 24) at two locations in northern Nevada. We detected biparental incubation at both sites (17 of 24 nests, 71%), and found that mean constancy (i.e., proportion of 24‐h period eggs were covered) was significantly higher at biparental nests than at uniparental nests, and mean recess duration (i.e., when eggs were uncovered) was significantly shorter. Incubation constancy at biparental nests in our study was the highest yet reported in the genus Spizella (range = 0.87–0.96), and constancy at uniparental nests (mean = 0.76, range = 0.71–0.81) was greater than that of congeners where female‐only incubation is thought to be the norm. Biparental incubation was more likely on colder days, but a comparison of models where incubation strategy and its interaction with ambient temperature were included as independent variables revealed that temperature was not the best predictor of constancy. Allofeeding occurred at very low frequency and only at biparental nests (11 of 20, 55%). Biparental nests with allofeeding had more incubation sessions per hour than biparental nests without allofeeding. The recipient usually left the nest immediately after being fed, and the feeding individual assumed the role of incubator. Our results suggest that some factor other than low ambient temperatures favors biparental incubation by Sagebrush Brewer's Sparrows. One possibility is that male incubation and the resulting increase in incubation constancy may better conceal nests and reduce the likelihood of nest predation. The low frequency of allofeeding at nests with biparental incubation in our study suggests that it serves some function other than improving female nutritional status or reducing activity levels at nests. Rather, allofeeding may serve as an intraspecific signal important for maintaining the social bond between mates.  相似文献

We investigated habitat selection of Mus minutoides in northeastern Swaziland. We used powder tracking to determine how M. minutoides selected habitat at a fine scale and a broader path scale. At the fine scale, we measured per cent cover of grass and shrubs, the number of forbs and visual obstruction (VO) at five evenly spaced points along a mouse's pathway and at a paired random location. At the path scale, we calculated the relative displacement (RD) of each path as the ratio of the distance from the start to the end point of the path to the total length of the path (values near one indicate less preference). We found that M. minutoides were positively associated with increases in visual obstruction, grass cover, and shrub cover at the fine scale, but not at the path scale. Our results indicate that M. minutoides selection of vegetative features at the path scale is not as important as their fine‐scale selection of vegetative structure. In addition, the shrub encroachment on our study site may be directly beneficial to M. minutoides at the fine scale. Our results provide us with an increased understanding of the basic ecology of M. minutoides and information on their response to a changing landscape.  相似文献

Background and AimsDifferent seed dormancy classes control the timing of germination via different cues. The ecological dissimilarities between classes therefore suggest that they are likely to be subject to different selective pressures, and that species within each class will have diverse functional responses. We aimed to investigate this by assessing how variation in the distribution of dormancy classes is correlated with regional environmental factors, in particular rainfall seasonality and temperature. Additionally, we compare the relative proportions of species with physiological (PD) or physical (PY) dormancy to assess whether dormancy class influences their ability to persist under different rainfall seasonality regimes.MethodsDormancy class was assigned for 3990 species from 281 genera occurring across two climate regions, with either winter or aseasonal rainfall, across temperate fire-prone Australia. All regions have similar vegetation and fire regimes. Using a Bayesian framework, we compared the distribution of dormancy classes across temperature and rainfall climate gradients, for threatened and common species.Key ResultsA high dormant:non-dormant species ratio highlighted the critical role of dormancy across our study regions. Critically, species showing PD were more likely to be threatened in aseasonal rainfall climate regions.ConclusionsOur results support the assumption that dormancy is favoured in environments with stochastic disturbance  相似文献
