Most mammals have deformable bodies, making it difficult to measure the size of living or freshly killed ones accurately. Because small rodents are common prey of many snakes, and because nearly all snakes swallow their prey whole, we explored four methods for determining the ingestible size (the smallest cross‐sectional area that the largest part of the rodent can be made into without breaking bones or dislocating joints) of 100 intact rodents, including 50 Musmusculus and 50 Rattus norvegicus. Cross‐sectional areas derived from maximal height and width of specimens at rest or the same specimens wrapped snout to pelvic girdle are roughly 1.5× higher than areas calculated either by the height and width of the same specimens rolled into cylinders or by volumetric displacement. Rolling rodents into cylinders reduces cross‐sectional area by straightening the vertebral column, lengthening the abdominal cavity, elevating the sternum, compressing the thoracic cavity, and protracting the shoulder joint, that is, changes similar to those seen in rodents eaten by snakes. Reduced major axis regression of the smallest attainable cross‐sectional area, y, on mass, x, shows that y (in log mm2) approximates 1.53x (in log grams)0.69 for rats and 1.63x0.64 for mice. Our results suggest that visual cues provided by live rodents might lead most predators, like snakes, to overestimate ingestible size and hence rarely attack prey too large to ingest. J. Modeling the two‐locus architecture of divergent pollinator adaptation: how variation in SAD paralogs affects fitness and evolutionary divergence in sexually deceptive orchids 下载免费PDF全文
Divergent selection by pollinators can bring about strong reproductive isolation via changes at few genes of large effect. This has recently been demonstrated in sexually deceptive orchids, where studies (1) quantified the strength of reproductive isolation in the field; (2) identified genes that appear to be causal for reproductive isolation; and (3) demonstrated selection by analysis of natural variation in gene sequence and expression. In a group of closely related Ophrys orchids, specific floral scent components, namely n‐alkenes, are the key floral traits that control specific pollinator attraction by chemical mimicry of insect sex pheromones. The genetic basis of species‐specific differences in alkene production mainly lies in two biosynthetic genes encoding stearoyl–acyl carrier protein desaturases (SAD) that are associated with floral scent variation and reproductive isolation between closely related species, and evolve under pollinator‐mediated selection. However, the implications of this genetic architecture of key floral traits on the evolutionary processes of pollinator adaptation and speciation in this plant group remain unclear. Here, we expand on these recent findings to model scenarios of adaptive evolutionary change at SAD2 and SAD5, their effects on plant fitness (i.e., offspring number), and the dynamics of speciation. Our model suggests that the two‐locus architecture of reproductive isolation allows for rapid sympatric speciation by pollinator shift; however, the likelihood of such pollinator‐mediated speciation is asymmetric between the two orchid species O. sphegodes and O. exaltata due to different fitness effects of their predominant SAD2 and SAD5 alleles. Our study not only provides insight into pollinator adaptation and speciation mechanisms of sexually deceptive orchids but also demonstrates the power of applying a modeling approach to the study of pollinator‐driven ecological speciation. 相似文献

The photosynthetic pathway of plant species collected at Menyuan, Henan, and Maduo sites, east of Tibetan Plateau, China,
during the growing season were studied using stable carbon isotopes in leaves. The 232 samples leaves analyzed belonged to
161 species, 30 families, and 94 genera. The δ13C values (from −24.6 to − 29.2 ‰) indicated that all the considered species had a photosynthetic C3 pathway. The absence of plant species with C4 photosynthetic pathway might be due to the extremely low air temperature characterizing the Tibetan Plateau. The average
δ13C value was significantly (p<0.05) different between annuals and perennials at the three considered study sites. Hence the longer-lived species had greater
water-use efficiency (WUE) than shorter-lived species, that is, longer-lived species are better adapted to the extreme environmental

The pleiotropic effects of the Rld1-O/+ mutation of Zea mays (Poaceae) on leaf phenotype include a suppression of normal transverse unrolling, a reversed top/bottom epidermal polarity, and an apparently straighter longitudinal shape. According to engineering shell theory, there might be mechanical coupling between transverse and longitudinal habit, i.e., the leaf rolling itself might produce the longitudinal straightening. We tested this possibility with quantitative curvature measurements and mechanical uncoupling experiments. The contributions of elastic bending under self weight, mechanical coupling, and rest state of leaf parts to the longitudinal and transverse habit were assessed in Rld1-O/+ mutants and a population of sibling +/+ segregants. Elastic bending and curvature coupling are shown to be relatively unimportant. The Rld1-O/+ mutation is shown to alter not only the unrolling process, but also the developmental longitudinal curving in the growing leaf, leading to a straighter midrib and a rolled lamina. The Rld1-O/+ mutant is thus a suitable model to study the relation between tissue polarity and differential curvature development in the maize leaf. Since on the abaxial side of the leaf, more abundant sclerenchyma is found in +/+ than in Rld1-O/+, a gradient in sclerification may contribute to the development of midrib curvature. 相似文献

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been proposed as a promising new class of antimicrobials despite warnings that therapeutic use could drive the evolution of pathogens resistant to our own immunity peptides. Using experimental evolution, we demonstrate that Staphylococcus aureus rapidly evolved resistance to pexiganan, a drug-candidate for diabetic leg ulcer infections. Evolved resistance was costly in terms of impaired growth rate, but costs-of-resistance were completely ameliorated by compensatory adaptation. Crucially, we show that, in some populations, experimentally evolved resistance to pexiganan provided S. aureus with cross-resistance to human-neutrophil-defensin-1, a key component of the innate immune response to infection. This unintended consequence of therapeutic use could drastically undermine our innate immune system's ability to control and clear microbial infections. Our results therefore highlight grave potential risks of AMP therapies, with implications for their development. 相似文献

Two pairs of stable diploid clones were obtained as aberrant forms among F1 progeny of an intragroup (intraspecific) cross between R-11-4 (mating type +) and M-16-4b (mating type -) of Group A of Closterium ehrenbergii Menegh. Each pair was derived from the two germination products of a single zygospore, and both clones were mating type minus. The cell size range of these four diploid minus clones was considerably above that of normal (haploid) Group A clones. Chromosome counts at the second meiotic metaphase indicated that these clones were diploid with approximately 200 chromosomes, which was double the number for normal Group A clones. Diploid minus clones conjugated normally with any haploid Group A plus clones, and yielded many triploid zygospores. Triploid zygospores germinated normally as did intragroup diploid zygospores. In metaphase I preparations, only bivalents were observed except on a few occasions where some uni- and multivalents were also detected. Viability of F1 progeny from triploid zygospores (55–74%) was somewhat lower than from diploid zygospores of Japanese Group A populations (65–90%), but higher than intergroup (interspecific) hybrid zygospores from Groups A, B and H (0–12%). In addition to lower viability, some F1 progeny from triploid zygospores exhibited slow vegetative growth. Almost all pairs of F1 clones from single triploid zygospores were of opposite mating type, similar to normal diploid zygospores of the intragroup cross. Morphological variability of F1 progeny of triploid zygospores was great. The apparently normal meiosis of triploid zygospores and the high viability of F1 progeny suggested that the genome of Group A contains several sets of chromosome complements with mechanisms by which bivalents are regularly formed in the first meiotic division. 相似文献

Fragment shape and tree species composition in tropical forests: a landscape level investigation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fragmentation of tropical forest alters community composition as a result of changes in forest shape. This paper uses 22 hypotheses to test the effect of fragment shape on tree species composition in Ghana, West Africa, within biological categories of regeneration guild, rarity, phenology and dispersal. For both regenerating and mature trees, relationships between species composition and the shape of forest fragments were complex; almost half were significant but many failed to support the established hypotheses. Irregular shaped fragments had high proportions of regenerating, light‐demanding pioneers and mature, animal‐dispersed species. Species common to Ghana formed the foundation of communities in fragments of all shapes. Investigation at the landscape level indicated broad patterns of species change. Rigorous hypothesis testing is needed, following extensive demographic work on the ground, before population dynamics within tropical forest fragments can be comprehended fully and applied to conservation management. 相似文献
