Inhibitory effects of different quantitative compositions of Hymenaea leaf resins on a generalist herbivore Spodoptera exigua

The hypotheses that quantitative variation in leaf resins in the leguminous genus Hymenaea may partially be a response to insect predation was tested in feeding experiments with the generalist herbivore, the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua Hübn (Noctuidae). Leaf resins of all Hymenaea species are comprised of essentially the same suite of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, but discrete quantitative patterns have been classified as Compositional Types based on the amounts of major components. In this work pure extracts of leaf resins of Type I (high - and β-selinene), Type II (intermediate amounts of -and β-selinene and caryophyllene) and Type III (high caryophyllene) were incorporated into an artificial diet for the insects at 1 and 3.2% (dry wt). Resin Type treatments produced differential dose-dependent effects on growth rate (lower larval weights and increased time to pupation) and in mortality. More significant inhibitory effects occurred in Compositional Types with a predominance of a single compared (i.e. Types I and III). Significantly higher mortality occurring in Type III treatments suggests that caryophllene may have higher potential toxicity than - and β-selinene for S. exigua. These experiments indicate that feeding by generalist herbivores could be a factor determining quantitative compositional variation: (a) among populations; (b) during the development of leaves; (c) in the spatial distribution within the leaves; and (d) between parent tree and seedling progeny.     

Sesquiterpenes from Lactarius blennius

Six sesquiterpene lactones were isolated from Lactarius blennius. The structures of two new sesquiterpenes, blennin A and blennin B were determinated by spectroscopic methods and the structure of the seco-compound, blennin C, is revised. The two known furan sesquiterpenes and lactarorufin A were also identified.     

Isolement du vernodalin et du vernolepin a partir de Vernonia guineensis: Authenticité du squelette elemane

The isolation of vernoladin and vernolepin is reported. The authenticity of the occurrence of the elemane skeleton in nature is discussed, and a biosynthetic scheme concerning the genus Vernonia is proposed.     

Mikanokryptin,a new guianolide from Mikania

The isolation and structure determination of mikanokryptin, a stereoisomer of 11,13-dehydrogeigerin, from what appears to be a previously undescribed Mikania species is reported. Mikania micrantha HBK. yielded mikanolide and dihydromikanolide.     

Biosynthesis of the sesquiterpenoid ageratriol

Ageratriol is biosynthesized from agerol through a diepoxide derivative. Mevalonic acid incorporation revealed that the formation of the isopropenylic double bond is not stereospecific.     

New germacranolides from Liatris species

Three closely related cis-Δ⁴-diepoxygermacranolides were isolated from two Liatris species. Structures of eleganin from L. elegans (Walt.) Michx, and liscundin and liscunditrin from L. secunda (Ell.) Small. were established by NMR spectrometry, chemical transformations and correlation with punctaliatrin previously isolated from L. punctata Hook. Reinvestigation of the latter species yielded another germacranolide liatripunctin whose structure is reported.     

Population studies in Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana: Chromosome numbers and sesquiterpene lactone races

The sesquiterpene lactones and chromosome numbers for three chemical races of Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana have been examined from four populations in western Montana. TLC analysis of the sesquiterpene lactones in the seeds and seed producing parents demonstrated that genetic exchange does occur between sympatric sesquiterpene lactone chemical races. However, other evidence suggests that introgression between these races is restricted to zones of sympatry. There appears to be no correlation between chromosome numbers and sesquiterpene lactone races.     

A glycosidic germacradienolide from Eupatorium altissimum

The isolation and structure determination of a glycosidic germacradienolide from Eupatorium altissimum are reported. Eupatorin and 5-hydroxy-3′,4′,6,7-tetramethoxyflavone were also found.     

Three germacranolides and other constituents from Eremanthus species

The re-investigation of Eremanthus glomerulatus afforded three new germacranolides and a guaianolide, while from E. mollis two known furanoheliangolides and a new phenylpropanol derivative were isolated. The germacranolides most probably are precursors of the widespread glaucolides. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.
