The second heart field (SHF), foregut endoderm and sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway are all reported to associate with normal morphogenesis and septation of outflow tract (OFT). However, the morphological relationships of the development of foregut endoderm and expression of SHH signaling pathway members with the development of surrounding SHF and OFT are seldom described. In this study, serial sections of mouse embryos from ED9 to ED13 (midgestation) were stained with a series of marker antibodies for specifically highlighting SHF (Isl‐1), endoderm (Foxa2), basement membrane (Laminin), myocardium (MHC) and smooth muscle (α‐SMA) respectively, or SHH receptors antibodies including patched1 (Ptc1), patched2 (Ptc2) and smoothened, to observe the spatiotemporal relationship between them and their contributions to OFT morphogenesis. Our results demonstrated that the development of an Isl‐1 positive field in the splanchnic mesoderm ventral to foregut, a subset of SHF, is closely coupled with pulmonary endoderm or tracheal groove, the Isl‐1 positive cells surrounding pulmonary endoderm are distributed in a special cone‐shaped pattern and take part in the formation of the lateral walls of the intrapericardial aorta and pulmonary trunk and the transient aortic‐pulmonary septum, and Ptc1 and Ptc2 are exclusively expressed in pulmonary endoderm during this Isl‐l positive field development, suggesting special roles played in inducing the Isl‐l positive field formation by pulmonary endoderm. It is indicated that pulmonary endoderm plays a role in the development and specification of SHF in midgestation, and that pulmonary endoderm‐associated Isl‐l positive field is involved in patterning the morphogenesis and septation of the intrapericardial arterial trunks.  相似文献

According to the “nocturnal visual predation hypothesis” (NVPH), the convergent eyes and orbits of primates result from selection for improved stereoscopic depth perception to facilitate manual capture of prey at night. Within primates, haplorhines share additional derived orbital morphologies, including a postorbital septum and greater orbital convergence than any other mammalian clade. While the homology and function of the haplorhine septum remain controversial, experimental data suggest that septa evolved to inhibit mechanical disturbance of the orbital contents by the anterior temporalis muscle during mastication. According to this “insulation hypothesis,” haplorhines are particularly susceptible to disruption of the orbital contents because they have large and highly convergent eyes and orbits. However, comparative tests of the insulation hypothesis have been hindered by the morphological uniqueness of the haplorhine septum among mammals. Among birds, owls (Strigiformes) exhibit an expanded postorbital process that may be functionally analogous to the haplorhine septum. Here we present a comparative analysis of orbital morphology in 103 avian species that tests two hypotheses: (1) large, convergent orbits are associated with nocturnal visual predation, and (2) the strigiform postorbital process and haplorhine postorbital septum similarly function to insulate the eyes from contractions of mandibular adductors. Strigiforms, as nocturnal visual predators, possess relatively large orbits and exhibit the highest degree of orbital convergence in our sample. Notably, orbital convergence does not scale with orbit size in birds as in mammals. Owls are also unique among the birds examined in possessing extensive, plate-like postorbital processes that largely isolate the orbits from the temporal fossae. Furthermore, dissections of four owl species demonstrate that the expanded strigiform postorbital process deflects the path of mandibular adductors around the eye's inferolateral margin. These findings provide further comparative support for both the NVPH and the insulation hypothesis.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of two species of the Neotropical genus Ceratostema (Ericaceae) was examined by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The Ceratostema species examined have 3-colporate pollen grains united in permanent tetrahedral tetrads that show a common condition encountered in the Ericaceae. But the septal exine was absent between two neighboring grains in each pollen tetrad of Ceratostema. The pollen tetrads without septa are the first report for the Ericaceae as well as other angiosperm families.  相似文献

The septal organs are islands or patches of sensory epithelium, located in the ventral parts of the nasal septum and innervated by the olfactory nerve. The septal island in dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) was unusually located in the rostro-dorsal part of the nasal septum, where the ethmoidal branch of the trigeminal nerve provides innervation to the island mucosa. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to reveal the microscopic and ultrastructure of this island and to explain the probable functions. Twelve septal islands from 12 healthy male camels were used. Unlike the olfactory epithelium, which has a pseudostratified structure, the island neuroepithelium had a true neural lamination. Furthermore, in electron micrographs, the receptor, bipolar, and basal cells were connected with an orderly, organized network of cell–cell communication, which had some spine synapses. This network substituted the absence of supporting cells, maintained the shape of the tissue, and held the cells together. Moreover, the receptor cells were not similar to any of the different types of olfactory sensory neurons. Instead, they possessed the apical domain that might be specialized for the detection of chemical stimuli. Interestingly, a resident population of immune cells, namely mast cells and macrophages, was observed. The probable functions were discussed based on the cellular context and architecture. The nasal septal island in dromedaries may have a role in pain perception. The receptor cells most probably work as nociceptive cells that interact with the resident immune cells to coordinate pain signaling with immune response.  相似文献

How bacteria coordinate cell growth with division is not well understood. Bacterial cell elongation is controlled by actin–MreB while cell division is governed by tubulin–FtsZ. A ring‐like structure containing FtsZ (the Z ring) at mid‐cell attracts other cell division proteins to form the divisome, an essential protein assembly required for septum synthesis and cell separation. The Z ring exists at mid‐cell during a major part of the cell cycle without contracting. Here, we show that MreB and FtsZ of Escherichia coli interact directly and that this interaction is required for Z ring contraction. We further show that the MreB–FtsZ interaction is required for transfer of cell‐wall biosynthetic enzymes from the lateral to the mature divisome, allowing cells to synthesise the septum. Our observations show that bacterial cell division is coupled to cell elongation via a direct and essential interaction between FtsZ and MreB.  相似文献

Age-related and aged memory deficit changes in Nestin-immunoreactive (Nestin-IR) neurons were studied following recent evidence of distinct Nestin-IR neurons within adult rat basal forebrain. Morris water maze task assessed spatial learning capacity of 3- and 24-month rats (aged-impaired and aged-unimpaired groups). Nestin-IR neuron distributional and morphological features were investigated by immunohistochemistry and positive neuronal number calculation. Nestin-IR neuron number declined with aging, especially aged-impaired. Significant negative correlations existed between average escape latencies and Nestin-IR neuron number in medial septum-diagonal band of Broca (MS-DBB). Correlations of rostral portion [medial septum (MS) and vertical limb diagonal band (vDB)] were higher than caudal portion [horizontal limb diagonal band (hDB)]. Aged-impaired showed reduced complexity of Nestin-IR neuron dendrite arborization and dendritic length. Nestin-IR astrocyte-like cells appeared scattered among Nestin-IR neurons on some aged-impaired slices. In conclusion, aged-impaired rats showed worse cognitive spatial performance and less Nestin-IR neuronal number compared to aged-unimpaired. Nestin-IR neuronal loss and morphological changes are some pathological characteristics of rat aged basal forebrain and may be important in neurobiological mechanisms of brain aging and aged memory deficit.  相似文献

In the following study, we asked which steroid receptors regulate aggression and arginine vasopressin (AVP) immunoreactivity (– ir) in several limbic regions. Using spontaneous mutant and knockout mice, we generated a novel cross of mice whose offspring lacked estrogen receptor α (ERα), androgen receptor (AR) or both ERα and AR. The wild-type (WT) males and females were compared with ERα knockout (ERαKO) male, mutated AR (Tfm) male and ERαKO/Tfm (double knockout; DKO) male littermates. Animals were gonadectomized and treated with 17β-estradiol (E2) prior to resident-intruder aggression tests. WT and Tfm males showed aggression whereas WT females, ERαKO and DKO males did not. In the lateral septum, WT and Tfm male brains had significantly denser AVP-ir as compared with WT females and DKO males. ERαKO male brains were intermediate in the amount of AVP-ir present. In the medial amygdala, brains from all genotypes had equivalent AVP-ir, except DKO males, which had significantly less AVP-ir. Overall, the expression of aggressive behavior coincided with AVP-ir in WT, Tfm and DKO males. However, in ERαKO males and WT females, the amount of AVP-ir was not associated with resident-intruder aggression. In sum we have shown that E2 acts via ERα to regulate aggression in male mice. In contrast both ERα and AR contribute to AVP-ir in limbic brain regions.  相似文献

This paper describes the effects of increased expression of the cell division genes ftsZ, ftsQ, and ssgA on the development of both solid- and liquid-grown mycelium of Streptomyces coelicolor and Streptomyces lividans. Over-expression of ftsZ in S. coelicolor M145 inhibited aerial mycelium formation and blocked sporulation. Such deficient sporulation was also observed for the ftsZ mutant. Over-expression of ftsZ also inhibited morphological differentiation in S. lividans 1326, although aerial mycelium formation was less reduced. Furthermore, antibiotic production was increased in both strains, and in particular the otherwise dormant actinorhodin biosynthesis cluster of S. lividans was activated in liquid- and solid-grown cultures. No significant alterations were observed when the gene dosage of ftsQ was increased. Analysis by transmission electron microscopy of an S. coelicolor strain over-expressing ssgA showed that septum formation had strongly increased in comparison to wild-type S. coelicolor, showing that SsgA clearly influences Streptomyces cell division. The morphology of the hyphae was affected such that irregular septa were produced with a significantly wider diameter, thereby forming spore-like compartments. This suggests that ssgA can induce a process similar to submerged sporulation in Streptomyces strains that otherwise fail to do so. A working model is proposed for the regulation of septum formation and of submerged sporulation.  相似文献

The spatial scaling of 77 hemisutures from 65 species of Cretaceous heteromorphic ammonites was quantified with the fractal box‐counting method. Fractal dimensions within Baculites compressus did not significantly differ between adult hemisutures; however, the juvenile suture of this species did exhibit a significantly lower fractal dimension. This suggests that variation in sutural complexity between explicitly adult ontogenetic stages may not contribute to significant noise in comparisons between other species/morphotypes. High‐spired, three‐dimensionally coiled heteromorphs with a larger degree of septal asymmetry exhibit higher fractal dimensions in outer whorl hemisutures than inner whorl hemisutures due to their elongation and improved space occupation over a larger whorl surface. Three‐dimensionally coiled ammonites also have higher fractal dimensions on average (mean Db = 1.45) with respect to their 2‐D coiled counterparts (mean Db = 1.38). All ammonites in this study exhibit a positive trend between sutural complexity and shell size (proxied by whorl height). These relationships suggest that septal frilling is constrained by shell morphology and whorl section geometry during septal morphogenesis. This, in turn, influences the scaling, space‐filling properties and scaling limits of ammonitic suture patterns. Sutural/septal complexity is also found to positively influence the amount of liquid retained in marginal septal recesses. However, as these septa approach larger scales, less cameral liquid is retained per septal mass. This may further explain the positive relationship between sutural complexity and shell size.  相似文献
