The unfertilized egg of the newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, has a second meiotic spindle at the animal pole and numerous cortical cytasters. After physiologically polyspermic fertilization, all sperm nuclei incorporated into the egg develop sperm asters, and the cortical cytasters change into bundles of cortical microtubules. The size of the sperm asters in the animal hemisphere is ∼5.6-fold larger than that in the vegetal hemisphere. Only one sperm nucleus moves toward the center of the animal hemisphere to form a zygote nucleus with the egg nucleus. This movement is inhibited by nocodazole, but not by cytochalasin B. The centrosome in the zygote nucleus divides into two parts to form a bipolar spindle for the first cleavage synchronously with the nuclear cycle, but centrosomes of accessory sperm nuclei in the vegetal hemisphere remained to form monopolar interphase asters and subsequently degenerate around the first cleavage stage. The size of sperm asters in monospermically fertilized Xenopus eggs was ∼37-fold larger than those in Cynops eggs. Since sperm asters that formed in polyspermically fertilized Xenopus eggs exclude each other, the formation of a zygote nucleus is inhibited. Cynops sperm nuclei form larger asters in Xenopus eggs, whereas Xenopus sperm nuclei form smaller asters in Cynops eggs compared with those in homologous eggs. Since there was no significant difference in the concentration of monomeric tubulin between those eggs, the size of sperm asters is probably regulated by a component(s) in egg cytoplasm. Smaller asters in physiologically polyspermic newt eggs might be useful for selecting only one sperm nucleus to move toward the egg nucleus. Mol. Reprod. Aedes atropalpus is an autogenous mosquito characterized by a first gonadotropic cycle which results in approximately 200 mature oocytes without a bloodmeal. Ovarian development is completely inhibited if these animals are decapitated or ligated between the thorax and abdomen shortly after adult emergence. Injection of 4.8 ng of 20-hydro- xyecdysone into decapitated females 12 h after eclosion restores ovarian development in all females so treated. However, the same amount of 20-hydroxyecdysone injected into isolated abdomens obtained shortly after adult emergence had no discernible effect on vitellogenesis. In contrast, all abdomens which received 0.5 ng of topically applied JH I followed by the injection of 4.8 ng 20-hydroxyecdysone produced mature oocytes. Isolated abdomens were also capable of oocyte maturation when treated with excess amounts of JH alone; JH I was the most effective followed by JH II and then JH III.

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic analysis of vitellin extracted from the ovaries of hormonally-treated animals did not reveal any qualitative differences compared to intact normal controls. However, less yolk protein was present in the former. This was verified by counting the number and measuring the size of ovarian follicles in individual females.  相似文献

Sensitivity of North American sturgeons and paddlefish to fishing mortality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Sturgeons and paddlefish exhibit unusual combinations of morphology, habits, and life history characteristics, which make them highly vulnerable to impacts from human activities, particularly fisheries. Five North American sturgeons (shortnose, Gulf, pallid, Alabama, and green sturgeon) are listed as endangered or threatened by management authorities. Managers have instituted fishery closures for the three other species of North American sturgeons (Atlantic, white, and shovelnose) and paddlefish because of low stock abundance at some point in this century. Reproductive potential in four species I examined (Atlantic, white, and shortnose sturgeon, and paddlefish) is more sensitive to fishing mortality than it is for three other intensively-fished coastal species in North America: striped bass, winter flounder, and bluefish. The sturgeons and paddlefish are generally longer-lived than the three other coastal species, and also have an older age at full maturity, lower maximum fecundity values, and older ages at which 50% of the lifetime egg production is realized with no fishing mortality.  相似文献

Ferretti G., Gabriele F. and Palmas C. 1981. Development of human and mouse strain of Hymenolepis nana in mice. International Journal for Parasitology11: 425–430. An Hymenolepis nana strain isolated from human faeces was transferred in the mouse. At first, the q ratio (the number of parasites to the number of eggs used) was very low. After 10 passages adaptation was complete: when mice of different age and strain (CD1 and BDF1) were infected with eggs of the above strain and eggs of 2 different murine strains, no differences emerged in the q ratio or in the parasite mean dry weight. Survival also appeared the same in the 3 parasite strains, however, human and murine strains live for a shorter time in BDF1 than in CD1 mice. Discussion bears on the hypothesis that the difficulties that emerge during the first passages may be connected to the adult and not to the larval phase.  相似文献

Storing the eggs of T. pisiformis for periods of 0 to 9 days at a temperature of 36–38°C and relative humidity of 87–93 % revealed at least 4 stages in the ageing process. Firstly, a stage in which eggs hatched and activated in vitro and were also fully infective for rabbits. Secondly, a stage in which eggs hatched and activated in vitro but underwent only partial development in rabbits. Thirdly, a stage in which eggs hatched and activated in vitro, and presumably therefore in vivo, but no evidence of infection could be found when they were fed to rabbits. Fourthly, a stage in which eggs either did not hatch, or if they did hatch, the oncosphere was rapidly digested. In vitro techniques for assessing viability of T. pisiformis eggs were not a reliable guide to their infectivity for rabbits. ‘Senescent’ eggs, that is eggs which produced evidence of early infection in rabbits but did not complete their development to cysticerci, failed to produce immunity to challenge infection with T. pisiformis eggs.  相似文献

The relationship between the strontium content of the outer layers of otoliths (an indication of recent marine, estuarine or riverine habitat use) and the strontium content of roe in ripe female brown trout Salmo trutta was examined in fish collected from the Pomahaka River and the lower reaches of the Clutha River, South Island, New Zealand. A close relationship was found between the strontium content of roe and the outer layers of otoliths. This finding suggests that spawned eggs collected from redds could potentially be used to track the extent of upstream spawning migrations by anadromous brown trout.  相似文献

Response of female Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae) to an oviposition attractant and/or stimulant associated with conspecific eggs was investigated in the laboratory. Females of two populations laid significantly higher mean number of eggs on sites with 160 eggs already present than on bare control sites. This response was lost when eggs placed on test sites were previously washed in organic solvents and distilled water. Age of eggs placed on test sites, 1-6 days after being laid, did not seem to affect the oviposition response of the females. Comparing effects of different numbers of eggs, positive responses were obtained when 80, 160 or 320 eggs were placed on test sites. No significant differences between mean egg numbers laid on test sites and controls were detected when batches of only 20 or 40 eggs were used.  相似文献

The calcium wave subsequent to fertilization of the egg is analyzed interms of an electrical equivalent circuit. The circuit consists of aswitch, capacitor, an inductor, and a resistor. The switch symbolizes aseries of chemical reactions initiated by the sperm the lead to thedevelopment of the calcium wave. Its closure signifies the onset of thecalcium wave. The capacitor and inductor represent the endoplasmicreticulum. The capacitive component of the endoplasmic reticulum controlsthe release of calcium ions while the inductive component regulates thesequestration of clacium ions. The resistor represents the inductor andcytoplasm and has very low resistance. The analysis of the circuit showsthat the period of the calcium oscillations is proportional to the size ofthe egg.
