During outbreaks, locust swarms can contain millions of insects travelling thousands of kilometers while devastating vegetation and crops. Such large-scale spatial organization is preceded locally by a dramatic density-dependent phenotypic transition in multiple traits. Behaviourally, low-density 'solitarious' individuals avoid contact with one another; above a critical local density, they undergo a rapid behavioural transition to the 'gregarious phase' whereby they exhibit mutual attraction. Although proximate causes of this phase polyphenism have been widely studied, the ultimate driving factors remain unclear. Using an individual-based evolutionary model, we reveal that cannibalism, a striking feature of locust ecology, could lead to the evolution of density-dependent behavioural phase-change in juvenile locusts. We show that this behavioural strategy minimizes risk associated with cannibalistic interactions and may account for the empirically observed persistence of locust groups during outbreaks. Our results provide a parsimonious explanation for the evolution of behavioural plasticity in locusts.  相似文献

Neural crest (NC) cells are a migratory cell population synonymous with vertebrate evolution. They generate a wide variety of cell and tissue types during embryonic and adult development including cartilage and bone, connective tissue, pigment and endocrine cells as well as neurons and glia amongst many others. Such incredible lineage potential combined with a limited capacity for self-renewal, which persists even into adult life, demonstrates that NC cells bear the key hallmarks of stem and progenitor cells. In this review, we describe the identification, characterization and isolation of NC stem and progenitor cells from different tissues in both embryo and adult organisms. We discuss their specific properties and their potential application in cell-based tissue and disease-specific repair.  相似文献

Encountering mates and avoiding predators are ubiquitous challenges faced by many organisms and they can affect the expression of many traits including growth, timing of maturity and resource allocation to reproduction. However, these two factors are commonly considered in isolation rather than simultaneously. We examined whether predation risk and mate availability interact to affect morphology and life-history traits (including lifetime fecundity) of a hermaphroditic snail (Physa acuta). We found that mate availability reduced juvenile growth rate and final size. Predator cues from crayfish induced delayed reproduction, but there were no reduced fecundity costs associated with predator induction. Although there were interactive effects on longevity, lifetime fecundity was determined by the number of reproductive days. Therefore, our results indicate a resource-allocation trade-off among growth, longevity and reproduction. Future consideration of this interaction will be important for understanding how resource-allocation plasticity affects the integration of defensive, life-history and mating-system traits.  相似文献

I started my scientific carer by investigating the development of the digestive tract in the laboratory of a well-known embryologist, Etienne Wolff, then professor at the Collège de France. My animal model was the chick embryo. The investigations that I pursued on liver development together with serendipity, led me to devise a cell-marking technique based on the construction of chimeric embryos between two closely related species of birds, the Japanese quail ( Coturnix coturnix japonica ) and the chick ( Gallus gallus ).
The possibility to follow the migration and fate of the cells throughout development from early embryonic stages up to hatching and even after birth, was a breakthrough in developmental biology of higher vertebrates.
This article describes some of scientific achievements based on the use of this technique in my laboratory during the last 38 years.  相似文献

Peptides of alternating charge and hydrophobic amino acids have a tendency to adopt unusually stable beta-sheet structures that can form insoluble macroscopic aggregates under physiological conditions. In this study, analogues of a well-known self-assembling peptide, characterized by the same polar/nonpolar periodicity but with different residues, were designed to study the relationship between sequence, conformation in solution and film-forming capacity in saline solution. Peptide conformation, evaluated by circular dichroism, correlated with film forming capacity observed by inverted optical microscopy after addition of saline solution and subsequent drying. We found that polar/nonpolar periodicity of several analogues is not criterion enough to induce beta-sheet and thus film formation and that conformations different from beta-sheet also allow self-assemblage. Furthermore, addition of the short adhesive sequence RGD to a known self-assembling sequence was shown to not prevent the self-assembling process. This finding might prove useful for the design of biomimetic scaffolds. (c) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present study reports on the retention of conformational flexibility of a model allosteric protein upon immobilization on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. Organothiolated SAMs of different compositions were utilized for adsorptive and covalent attachment of bovine liver glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), a well-characterized allosteric enzyme. Sensitive fluorimetric assays were developed to determine immobilization capacity, specific activity, and allosteric properties of the immobilized preparations as well as the potential for repeated use and continuous catalytic transformations. The allosteric response of the free and immobilized forms towards ADP, L-leucine and high concentrations of NAD(+), some of the well-known activators for this enzyme, were determined and compared. The enzyme immobilized by adsorption or chemical binding responded similarly to the activators with a greater degree of activation, as compared to the free form. Also loss of activity involving the two immobilization procedures were similar, suggesting that residues essential for catalytic activity or allosteric properties of GDH remained unchanged in the course of chemical modification. A recently established method was used to predict GDH orientation upon immobilization, which was found to explain some of the experimental results presented. The general significance of these observations in connection with retention of native properties of protein structures upon immobilization on SAMs is discussed.  相似文献

生物群落中的物种多样性是群落生态学研究的一个基本问题。大量的实验研究表明物种多样性和生境面积的常数次幂成比例,这说明它们的对数数量级呈线性正相关。我们研究了中国境内15块湿地的高等植物和32块湿地鸟类多样性,发现它们分别和湿地面积在对数尺度上呈线性正相关.进一步支持了种数与面积的幂指数关系。我们还借助计算机模拟系统地讨论了产生这种简单规律的生态学机理,包括中性理论、集合种群动态和物种分布的自相似性。中性理论假设了群落中物种的个体之间只有竞争关系,忽略了其它的种间关系。集合种群动态理论考虑的是由多个亚群落构成的集合群落,在研究种数和面积关系时也忽略了种间关系,所以也是中性的。尽管物种分布的自相似性可导致这种面积幂指数关系,但在自然界中自相似性也可能不成立。  相似文献

Objective: This pilot study assessed the short‐ and long‐term effects of a modified cognitive behavioral treatment designed to facilitate obese patients’ acceptance of a 5% to 10% reduction in initial weight. Research Methods and Procedures: Participants were 17 women with a mean age of 46.5 ± 9.7 years and BMI of 34.7 ± 2.9 kg/m2. They participated in a 40‐week program that included four phases. The first discussed the benefits of modest weight losses and the potential adverse effects of unrealistic expectations. Phase II provided instruction in traditional cognitive behavioral methods of weight control Phase III focused on methods to improve body image and self‐esteem. Phase IV addressed skills for weight maintenance. Changes in weight, self‐esteem, body image, and quality of life were assessed at the end of treatment and 1 year later (week 92). Results: At week 40, participants lost an average of 5.7 ± 5.3% of initial weight, which was associated with significant improvements in body image, self‐esteem, and quality of life. Improvements in psychosocial status were maintained at week 92, although mean weight loss at this time had declined to 2.9 ± 5.6% of initial weight. Increased satisfaction with body weight at week 40 was associated with significantly better maintenance of weight loss at follow‐up (r = ?0.70; p = 0.02). Discussion: Having participants seek only modest initial weight losses does not appear to facilitate weight maintenance. However, increasing patients’ satisfaction with their body weight at the end of treatment may help improve weight maintenance. More research is needed on the relation between satisfaction with initial weight loss and long‐term success.  相似文献

Objective: Although self‐efficacy has received increasing attention for its role in weight loss, there is less research examining this relationship in minority samples. The purpose of this study was to determine whether self‐efficacy for weight loss was predictive of weight change in a sample of African‐American women. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects were 106 overweight or obese, low‐income African‐American women participating in a weight management intervention that involved either personalized monthly sessions with their primary care physician or standard care. Weight and self‐efficacy for weight loss were assessed at baseline and at the end of the 6‐month treatment. Results: For subjects in the personalized intervention, baseline self‐efficacy was predictive of subsequent weight change, such that higher levels of self‐efficacy before treatment were associated with less weight loss. In contrast, improvements in self‐efficacy during treatment were associated with greater weight loss for the personalized intervention group. Discussion: Results suggest high self‐efficacy for weight loss before treatment may be detrimental to success, whereas treatments that improve participants’ self‐efficacy may result in greater weight loss. High pretreatment self‐efficacy may be indicative of overconfidence or lack of experience with the difficulties associated with weight loss efforts. Whereas replication is needed, our results suggest that self‐efficacy is an important variable to consider when implementing weight loss interventions.  相似文献
