Abstract.  1. Salinity is an important cause of abiotic stress in wetland communities yet little is known about its consequences for freshwater plants and their insect herbivores. The goal of this study was to test the effect of salinity on a leafmining insect, Cerodontha iridiphora , and its herbaceous host plant, Iris hexagona .
2. Leafminer performance was evaluated on irises grown in control and saline treatments, and the effects of salinity and herbivory on leaf quality and mortality was measured.
3. Leafminer density and size were significantly lower on irises grown in saline water compared with freshwater.
4. Both salinity and herbivory accelerated leaf senescence and mortality, and their combined effects increased tissue loss by an order of magnitude compared with controls.
5. Leafminers acted as nutrient sinks. The undamaged regions of mined leaves contained 40% less nitrogen than unmined leaves, providing a mechanism for the premature leaf mortality.
6. Salinity was detrimental to the performance and survival of both the iris leafminer and its host plant. We propose that glycophytic host plants and their insect herbivores will suffer more than halophytic communities from environmental salinity because they lack the adaptive mechanisms to tolerate this potent physiological stress.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Both host plant nutrition and mortality from natural enemies have been predicted to significantly impact host plant selection and oviposition behaviour of phytophagous insects. It is unclear, however, if oviposition decisions maximise fitness.
2. This study examined whether the salt marsh planthopper Pissonotus quadripustulatus prefers higher quality host plants for oviposition, and if oviposition decisions are made so as to minimise mortality at the egg stage.
3. A controlled laboratory experiment and 4 years of field data were used to assess the rates of planthopper oviposition on higher quality 'green' and lower quality 'woody' stems of the host plant Borrichia frutescens . The numbers and percentages of healthy eggs and eggs that were killed by parasitoids or the host plant were recorded.
4. In all years, including the laboratory experiment, Pissonotus planthoppers laid more eggs on lower quality woody stems than on higher quality green stems. While host plant related egg mortality was higher in woody stems, the percentage of eggs parasitised was much greater in green stems. This resulted in a lower total mortality of eggs on woody stems.
5. The results of this study demonstrate that, although Pissonotus prefers lower quality host plants for oviposition, this actually increases fitness. These data seem to support the enemy free space hypothesis, and suggest that for phytophagous insects that experience the majority of mortality in the egg stage, oviposition choices may be made such that mortality is minimised.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression is a major selective force that maintains outcrossing in flowering plants. If the long life and large mature size of trees cause high inbreeding depression via mitotic mutations and half-sib competition, these characteristics may increase inbreeding depression sufficiently to maintain traits that facilitate outcrossing even with high primary selfing rates (proportion of selfed ovules). Here, I report the maintenance of inbreeding depression in a population of a tree (Magnolia obovata Thunb.) with primary selfing rates greater than 0.8 resulting from geitonogamy. The progenies exhibited inbreeding depression for germination, seedling survival, and seedling mass (δ = 0.29–0.38), but no significant difference between crossing type in seedling height. Cumulative inbreeding depression for early survival (from zygote to 2-year-old stage) estimated from these results and from prior data on embryonic survival was high (δe = 0.91). The fixation index at maturity based on six allozyme loci was low (Fis = 0.08), indicating that significant inbreeding depression for late survival results in a low level of inbreeding with respect to gene transmission to the next generation. From these results, I estimated that inbreeding depression for late and lifetime survival equaled 0.69 and 0.97, respectively. These results suggest that M. obovata trees maintain high inbreeding depression at both early and late life stages, resulting in a low level of inbreeding despite a high primary selfing rate. The high inbreeding depression can be explained by previous theories and is consistent with the predicted maintenance of inbreeding depression in highly self-fertilizing tree populations. The inbreeding load due to the high primary selfing rate represents a cost of this tree’s pollination system for outcrossing, which is based on automimicry and mass flowering. 1. Growth models for body mass and length were fitted to data collected from 1842 sea otters Enhydra lutris shot or live-captured throughout south-west Alaska between 1967 and 2004. Growth curves were constructed for each of two main year groups: 1967-71 when the population was at or near carrying capacity and 1992-97 when the population was in steep decline. Analyses of data collected from animals caught during 2004, when the population density was very low, were precluded by a small sample size and consequently only examined incidentally to the main growth curves. 2. Growth curves demonstrated a significant increase in body mass and body length at age in the 1990s. Asymptotic values of body mass were 12-18% higher in the 1990s than in the 1960s/70s, and asymptotic values for body length were 10-11% higher between the same periods. Data collected in 2004 suggest a continued increase in body size, with nearly all data points for mass and length falling significantly above the 1990s growth curves. 3. In addition to larger asymptotic values for mass and length, the rate of growth towards asymptotic values was more rapid in the 1990s than in the 1960s/70s: sea otters reached 95% of asymptotic body mass and body length 1-2 years earlier in the 1990s. 4. Body condition (as measured by the log mass/log length ratio) was significantly greater in males than in females. There was also an increasing trend from the 1960s/70s through 2004 despite much year-to-year variation. 5. Population age structures differed significantly between the 1960s/70s and the 1990s with the latter distribution skewed toward younger age classes (indicating an altered lx function) suggesting almost complete relaxation of age-dependent mortality patterns (i.e. those typical of food-limited populations). 6. This study spanned a period of time over which the population status of sea otters in the Aleutian archipelago declined precipitously from levels at or near equilibrium densities at some islands in the 1960s/70s to < 5% of estimated carrying capacity by the late 1990s. The results of this study indicate an improved overall health of sea otters over the period of decline and suggest that limited nutritional resources were not the cause of the observed reduced population abundance. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the decline was caused by increased killer whale predation.  相似文献

It emphasizes the importance and the necessity of political participation in order to restrain the population growth that, in a country such as Kenya, aggravates the existing deficiencies in the field of nutrition and hygiene. The effect of patch demography on the structure of forest tree communities was examined using a patch-age and tree-size structured model of forest dynamics. Changes in abundance of species of different types (four different maximum tree-size classes each in two or three shade-tolerance classes) were numerically modeled in response to changes in the duration of the gap-formation-free lag phase. Average patch mortality was identical in all simulations. Tolerant species were more abundant without a lag phase due to larger variation in patch longevity, while subtolerant or intolerant species were successful when patch longevity was fixed with a long duration of lag phase. Variation in patch-age distribution facilitated species coexistence. Increasing ‘advance regeneration’, or surviving fraction at gap formation, brought about the exclusive dominance of the tolerant species. Results suggest that patch demography plays a significant role in the community organization of forest trees. In species-rich systems like tropical rain forests, longevity or canopy duration of large trees can differ among species, which brings about the variation in patch longevity, thus promoting further coexistence of species.  相似文献

Recent popular works have represented Muslim fertility as dangerously high, both a cause and consequence of religious fundamentalism. This article uses comparative, statistical methods to show that this representation is empirically wrong, at least in West Africa. Although religion strongly inflects reproductive practice, its effects are not constant across different communities. In West African countries with Muslim majorities, Muslim fertility is lower than that of their non-Muslim conationals; in countries where Muslims are in the minority, their apparently higher reproductive rates converge to those of the majority when levels of education and urban residence are taken into account. A similar pattern holds for infant mortality. By contrast, in all seven countries, Muslim women are more likely to report that their most recent child was wanted. The article concludes with a discussion of the relationship between autonomy and fertility desires.  相似文献

Decreased net population growth rates and cellular abundances have been observed in dinoflagellate species exposed to small‐scale turbulence. Here, we investigated whether these effects were caused by alterations in the cell cycle and/or by cell mortality and, in turn, whether these two mechanisms depended on the duration of exposure to turbulence. The study was conducted on the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum Halim, with the same experimental design and setup used in previous studies to allow direct comparison among results. A combination of microscopy and Coulter Counter measurements allowed us to detect cell mortality, based on the biovolume of broken cells and thecae. The turbulence applied during the exponential growth phase caused an immediate transitory arrest in the G2/M phase, but significant mortality did not occur. This finding suggests that high intensities of small‐scale turbulence can alter the cell division, likely affecting the correct chromosome segregation during the dinomitosis. When shaking persisted for >4 d, mortality signals and presence of anomalously swollen cells appeared, hinting at the activation of mechanisms that induce programmed cell death. Our study suggests that the sensitivity of dinoflagellates to turbulence may drive these organisms to find the most favorable (calm) conditions to complete their division cycle.  相似文献

In most egg-laying vertebrates, maternal responses to stressful conditions are translated into the release of glucocorticoid hormones such as cortisol, which are then transmitted to their developing embryos. Although such maternally transmitted hormonal resources have been shown to influence or even interfere with the optimal developmental trajectories of offspring in many taxa, their influence on the dynamics of wild fish populations remains largely unexplored. Here, we examined the extent to which simulated hormonally mediated maternal effects influence the development and early survival of the coral reef damselfish, Pomacentrus amboinensis. Concentrations of cortisol in the eggs were manipulated within naturally occurring limits by immersion. We found that the proportion of embryos that delayed hatching when exposed to high levels of cortisol was considerably lower than in the other two treatments (low cortisol dose and control). High cortisol levels in P. amboinensis eggs resulted in increased egg mortality and greater asymmetry in hatchlings. For embryos that successfully hatched, individuals from the elevated cortisol treatments (especially low dose) survived longer after hatching. Although individuals that originated from eggs with elevated cortisol levels survived longer after hatching, they may not gain an overall survival advantage. Our results suggest that subtle increases in the allocation of maternally derived hormones, such as cortisol, to offspring are a direct way for stressed mothers to endow their young with an immediate survival advantage. We propose that this immediate benefit outweighs the developmental costs which may be expressed as reduced fitness at later life stages. Based on the U.S. Federal Mortality Schedules from the years 1850–1880 infant deaths <1 year were investigated in order to determine whether mortality attributed to “smothering” or “overlaying” followed known SIDS trajectories. By comparing a case sample of 2,236 smothered/overlaid deaths with an age-, regionally and time-matched control sample of all-cause infant deaths (N = 58,293), striking similarities with SIDS became apparent, which were not mimicked in the control sample. These epidemiological traits included a disproportionate vulnerability during the second to fourth month of life (Poisson RR 12.94, p < 0.001), a remarkable birth and death seasonality, as well as pronounced racial disparities. The study could also corroborate sex-specific discrepancies—such as differential impact of month of birth on age-at-death. Results of a Cox regression furthermore indicate that age, sex, race and death season were significant predictors of mortality. This strongly supports the hypothesis that these infant deaths represent empirical evidence of 19th century SIDS.  相似文献
