Abstract Lesquerella stonensis (Brassicaceae) is an obligate winter annual endemic to a small portion of Rutherford County in the Central Basin of Tennessee, where it grows in disturbed habitats. This species forms a persistent seed bank, and seeds remain viable in the soil for at least 6 years. Seeds are dormant at maturity in May and are dispersed as soon as they ripen. Some of the seeds produced in the current year, as well as some of those in the persistent seed bank, afterripen during late spring and summer; others do not afterripen and thus remain dormant. Seeds require actual or simulated spring/summer temperatures to come out of dormancy. Germination occurs in September and October. Fully afterripened seeds germinate over a wide range of thermoperiods (15/6–35/20°C) and to a much higher percentage in light (14 h photoperiod) than in darkness. The optimum daily thermoperiod for germination was 30/15°C. Nondormant seeds that do not germinate in autumn are induced back into dormancy (secondary dormancy) by low temperatures (e.g., 5°C) during winter, and those that are dormant do not afterripen; thus seeds cannot germinate in spring. These seed dormancy/ germination characteristics of L. stonensis do not differ from those reported for some geographically widespread, weedy species of winter annuals and thus do not help account for the narrow endemism of this species.  相似文献

We propose a nomenclature for the genes encoding the chlorophylla/b-binding proteins of the light-harvesting complexes of photosystem I and II. The genes encoding LHC I and LHC II polypeptides are namedLhca1 throughLhca4 andLhcb1 throughLhcb6, respectively. The proposal follows the general format recommended by the Commision on Plant Gene Nomenclature. We also present a table for the conversion of old gene names to the new nomenclature.  相似文献

Herbaceous lomas in the Peruvian coastal desert, of South America establish in spring, and its habitat is limited to the southern or southwestern slopes along the coast that are affected by thick fog. The time of appearance, the duration and the thickness of the fog vary greatly from year to year, so the lomas can grow only in habitats with enough water to, sustain seed germination and plant growth. This paper studies the species composition and density of the buried seed population, of the herbaceous lomas of Loma Ancon in order to clarify the mechanisms of the lomas' establishment. The mean number of species with viable seeds was about, 12 spp. m−2 and that of dead seeds was about 22 spp. m−2. The dominant species wereSolanum tuberiferum, S. pinnatifidum andNolana humifusa, both in viable and dead seeds. Viable seed density was about 5000–8000 seeds m−2, which is comparable with the seed densities of other herbaceous communities. Dead seed density was about 15000–27000 seeds m−2, or nearly three times the viable seed density, because the rate of decomposition was slow in the extremely dry conditions. The net increase of viable seeds by seed production was estimated at about 5000 seeds m−2 in 1980, and the increase in the number of dead seeds was 2200 seeds m−2.  相似文献

Preharvest seed infection byAspergillus flavus and aflatoxin contamination in selected groundnut genotypes (fourA. flavus-resistant and fourA. flavus-susceptible) were examined in different soil types at several locations in India in 1985–1990. Undamaged mature pods were sampled at harvest and seed examined forA. flavus infection and aflatoxin content in two or more trials at ICRISAT Center on light sandy soils and red sandy loam soils (Alfisols), and on Vertisols, at Anantapur on light sandy soils, and at Dharwad and Parbhani on Vertisols. Rainy season trials (1985–1989) were all rainfed. Post-rainy season trials were irrigated; late-season drought stress (90 days after sowing (DAS) until harvest at 125 DAS) was imposed in the 1987/88 and 1989/90 seasons.A. flavus infection and aflatoxin contamination levels were much lower in seed of all genotypes from Vertisols than in seed from Alfisols across locations and seasons. Vertisols also had significantly lower populations ofA. flavus than Alfisols. There were no marked differences between light sandy soils and red sandy loam soils (Alfisols) in respect of seed infection byA. flavus and aflatoxin contamination. Significant interactions between genotypes and soil types were evident, especially in theA. flavus-susceptible genotypes. Irrespective of soil types,A. flavus-resistant genotypes showed lower levels of seed infection byA. flavus and other fungi than didA. flavus-susceptible genotypes. The relationship between biocontrol activity of Pseudomonas putida strain N1R against Pythium ultimum on pea and soybean seeds and the reduction in ethanol evolution by imbibed seeds was investigated under different treatment conditions, including temperature and numbers of seed‐applied cells of the bacterium. Treatment with strain N1R increased emergence at all temperatures, except for soybean at 12 °C and reduced ethanol concentration in the spermosphere of imbibed seeds at several temperatures. The concentration of bacterial cells in the seed treatment suspension also significantly affected biocontrol efficiency and reduced ethanol production, especially in pea seeds. In contrast, the duration (0–7 h) of submergence of seeds in bacterial suspension had little effect on biocontrol activity of N1R, although submergence of soybean seeds reduced their emergence even in the absence of the pathogen or biocontrol agent. Competition for seed‐derived compounds, including ethanol, is suggested to be one possible mechanism of biocontrol of Pythium by strain N1R, which is not known to produce antifungal antibiotics.  相似文献

Summary Seed plants capture pollen before seeds are dispersed and abort unpollinated ovules. As a result, each seed is associated with an accessory cost that represents the costs of pollen capture and the costs of aborted ovules. Accessory costs may explain the minimum seed size among species, because these costs are likely to comprise a greater proportion of total reproductive allocation in species with smaller seeds. For very small propagules, the costs of pollination may not be worth the benefits, perhaps explaining the persistence of pteridophytic reproduction at small propagule sizes. The smallest angiosperm seeds are much smaller than the smallest gymnosperm seeds, both in the fossil record and in the modern flora. This suggests that angiosperms can produce pollinated ovules more cheaply than gymnosperms. Pollination becomes less efficient as a species decreases in abundance, and this loss of efficiency is greater for species with a higher accessory cost per seed. We propose that the greater reproductive efficiency of angiosperms when rare can explain why angiosperm-dominated floras were more speciose than the gymnosperm-dominated floras they replaced.  相似文献

Polymorphism at the Hor 1 locus of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The Hor 1 locus of barley encodes a group of seed storage polypeptides called C hordein. Two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis of C-hordein fractions from six cultivars with different alleles at the Hor 1 locus showed extensive polymorphism. A total of 34 major polypeptides was mapped, with between 4 and 18 present in each cultivar. There was less variation among the same cultivars in the numbers (6 to 10) of restriction fragments of genomic DNA which hybridized to a cDNA clone related to C hordein. The total number of restriction fragments was also lower (22), and most pairs of cultivars had more restriction fragments than polypeptides in common. A total number of about 20–30 C-hordein genes per haploid genome was estimated. The results indicate that cultivars differ mainly in the extent of gene and polypeptide divergence, rather than in the degree of gene reiteration. They are consistent with the proposed origin of the multiple structural genes at the Hor 1 locus by the duplication and divergence of a single ancestral gene.NACB was supported by a grant from the Home Grown Cereals Authority.  相似文献

Using monogynous and polygynous colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, we developed methodology to determine which behavioural subcaste of workers was responsible for executing unfamiliar queens that were introduced to them. Separation of subcastes and introduction of queens to each of these separately was partly effective, but more accurate results were obtained by removing workers that were in the act of executing queens, marking them individually, and returning them to the colony. Their subsequent behaviour was then recorded to determine whether they behaved like nurses, reserves, or foragers. The results showed that foragers are dominant in execution behaviour and that all morphological subcastes (minors, medias, and majors) are involved. This methodology may be applied to other social insect species.
Résumé A l'aide de colonies monogynes de S. invicta Buren, nous avons testé la sensibilité de deux méthodes: Premièrement, nous avons isolé les trois sous-castes temporelles des ouvrières (nurses, réserves et fourrageuses) auxquelles nous avons introduit des reines étrangères. Nous avons trouvé que les fourrageuses étaient le groupe le plus agressif, exécutant un pourcentage élevé des reines qui leur étaient présentées. Le degré de physogastrie de la reine étrangère, sa colonie d'origine et la présence de couvain n'avaient pas d'effet visible sur sa destinée. La sensibilité de cette méthode était limitée par la difficulté d'une séparation complète des souscastes temporelles.Deuxièmement, nous avons capturé des ouvrières exécutant activement des reines étrangères, après marquage nous les avons remises dans leur colonie pour observations ultérieures. Nous avons remarqué que leur localisation dans le nid et leur comportement correspondaient aux séquences trouvées pour les fourrageuses bien plus qu'à celles des ouvrières réserves ou nurses. Cette méthode est plus sensible. Des mesures de la largeur de la capsule céphalique de ces ouvrières ont montré qu'aucune des sous-caste morphologiques (mineurs, moyennes et majeurs) étaient dominantes dans le comportement d'exécution. Nos résultats indiquent que la sensibilité des ouvrières à certaines phéromones de la reine et odeur de la colonie augmente avec leur âge.

Summary Sixty single seed descent (SSD) lines and about 25 anther-derived doubled-haploid (DH) lines were obtained from two triticale crosses. The frequency distributions of 10 quantitative agronomic traits were compared using parametric and non-parametric tests. A multivariate discriminant analysis was subsequently carried out. Gliadin patterns obtained from each line by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were used to calculate intra- and inter-population diversities from relative dissimilarity indices. It was found that DH and SSD lines show significant differences in frequency distributions of 1000 grain weight in both crosses, of heading date for one cross, and of lodging susceptibility for the other cross. The results of intra- and inter-population gliadin diversity indicate that although the SSD method theoretically provides more opportunity for recombination to occur than the DH method, it did not produce a greater range of recombinants. Since there is no significant difference between SSD- and DH-line distributions for grain yield, anther culture appears to be an efficient method for producing high yielding homozygous lines from F1 hybrids of triticale in a relatively short time.  相似文献
