Sediment samples from two locationsin the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) werecollected during periods of maximum and minimumtemperatures for two years. Both sites were rich incarbonate material and inhabited by a diverse benthicinfaunal community. However, Site F exhibited adeeper dwelling faunal community, higher content ofcarbonate minerals, and larger grained sediments thanat site MA, which was closer to shore. Depth profilesof sulfate reduction and potential rates of iron andmanganese reduction were determined together withmeasurements of pore water and solid phase chemistry. Bottom waters at all sites were nearly saturated withoxygen for all of the dates sampled except forSeptember 1993 when bottom waters at site F were lessthan 50% saturated. Sulfate reduction rates were ashigh as 400 nmol ml-1 day-1 during latesummer and fall when temperatures were >20 °C,while rates during March (8 °C) were <30 nmolml-1 day-1. Potential rates of ironreduction, as determined by the accumulation of bothdissolved and acid-soluble reduced iron, were high insurficial sediments at each site except at site F whenbottom waters were partially depleted in oxygen. In the latter instance, sulfate reduction overwhelmedmetal reduction. Although the portion of metalreduction due directly to enzymatic use by bacteriawas not determined, the potential rate data suggestedthat Fe and perhaps Mn reduction were significantcomponents of anaerobic carbon degradation in thesesediments during much of the year. Both sitesappeared to support active metal-reducing bacterialcommunities. However, occasional depletion of oxygenin bottom waters appeared to cause a decrease inirrigation/reworking activity by infauna whichdepressed redox cycling of elements enhancing theimportance of sulfate reduction. A shift from metalreduction to sulfate reduction potentially exacerbatestoxic effects of oxygen depletion on fauna byincreasing the accumulation of toxic sulfide.  相似文献

The fringing reeds (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., Poaceae) at Lake Constance-Untersee were mown or burnt in winter thereby drastically reducing the addition of decomposable organic matter to the sediment. The purpose of this study was to test whether or not this management significantly decreased the contents of organic matter and nutrients in the surface sediment layer and if the oxygen conditions in the withinreed water body improved. Hypotheses were tested by monitoring 6 treated reed beds and 3 reference fields over a period of up to 4 years. The sediment/water system of reed beds was found to be well buffered against the removal of the current year's crop of dead Phragmites straw, because only slight, and mostly insignificant, differences between treated and untreated reeds were detected. Hence, the benefit of winter reed harvesting to reduce nutrient overloading of the reed-belts and the die-back of reeds remains dubious.  相似文献

Investigations into the effects of the heavy metal cadmium (Cd) and low pH upon methanogenesis from anaerobic lake sediments were conducted over the period summer 1978 to early spring 1981 at the Freshwater Institute, Winnipeg, and at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), north-western Ontario. Experiments conducted at ELA consisted of both laboratory and field studies, while those at the Institute consisted of developmental and test laboratory studies. The laboratory studies indicated that dropping the pH of the test system below approximately 5.5 would inhibit methanogenesis. The lowering of pH to approximately 3.5 would result in total inhibition of methane production and visible changes in the sediments. The use of Cd water column concentrations as low as 3 μgl−l was found to be sufficient to cause total inhibition of methanogenesis in the laboratory studies. In the field studies acidification of one test system, to a pH of approximately 4.8, resulted in incomplete inhibition of methanogenesis, reducing the rate of production to approximately 50% of that of the controls. In comparison to the control systems, neither the use of Cd nor Cd plus low pH seemed to have any effect on the rate of methanogenesis in these field test systems. The cause of such differences may be due to factors which lay beyond the control of these experiments.  相似文献

Studies of nutrient loadings, to shallow culturally eutrophied Alberta lakes, suggest internal inputs are significant. In this regard, estimation of bottom sediment P loads to Lake Wabamun (80 km2, 5.5 m depth) were examined. Initially we determined the spatial variability in Total Organic Content (% loss on ignition) and Total Phosphorus, as indicators. Phosphorus fractions and biologically available phosphorus (BAP) were measured at specific stations. These data showed a very uniform distribution in sediment type with a Total Organic Content of 40.6 ± 3.3 (95% C.L.) at the west end, gradually declining to 26.3 ± 0.9 at the east end. Transects performed at routine monitoring stations indicate the representativeness of each station, e.g., station 2, 40.8 ± 1.3 (10 sites). One explanation of this uniformity is provided from210Pb analysis of shallow cores which indicate mixing to a depth of 16 cm. This is also thought to explain the mechanics of P loading to the water phase. Finally, Total Organic Content relates well to BAP (r2 = 0.80). It is hoped that this simple technique may well permit more precise extrapolation to whole lake BAP estimates at least on this lake.  相似文献

The pore fluids of the sediments collected at the deepest point of Lac Léman (Switzerland) are supersaturated with respect to vivianite and siderite. In the presence of sulphide, the iron solubility is controlled entirely by the amorphous iron sulphides. As the iron (II) becomes dominant, the formation of siderite occurs and evidence of this, in the solid phase, can be obtained by the use of M?ssbauer spectroscopy and some sequential chemical extractions. The amount of ‘siderite iron’ decreases from about 10% near the sediment surface to a few percent in the lower levels of the sediment (<10 cm). Evidence for vivianite formation could not be obtained even in the lower layers, despite the precautions taken to avoid oxidation. Although the trace metal behaviour in the solid phase is well correlated with the iron and manganese, availability in the pore fluid is dependent on the adsorption on, or co-precipitation with, finely dispersed colloids, which pass through a 0.45 μg filter. Trace metal concentrations in pore fluid were not directly related to total elemental concentrations in the solid phase, and did not reflect cumulative trends associated with anthropogenic enrichment.  相似文献

This review addresses three of the possible mechanisms by which trace metals can be concentrated by sediments and suspended particulate matter. These are physico-chemical adsorption from the water column, biological uptake particularly by bacteria and algae, and the sedimentation and physical entrapment of enriched particulate matter. The relative importance of these three mechanisms will be different, depending upon the aqueous system, but there have been insufficient studies to allow the establishment of even rule-of-thumb guidelines, as yet, about their quantitative importance under different conditions.The importance of natural organic matter in the cycling of trace metals in aquatic systems has been stressed. This organic matter may complex with the trace metals and keep them in solution, or it may enhance the association of the trace metals with particulate matter by becoming adsorbed to the particulate surface and then complexing with the trace metals in the solution phase. Enhanced metal-particulate associations may also arise if the metal-organic complexes are able to adsorb to the surface.The behaviour of natural organic matter may be the single most important influence on trace metal cycling in aquatic systems and should receive considerably more attention in the future.  相似文献

A Biological assay using Amphora coffeaeformis var. perpusilla (Grunow) Cleve and A. coffeaeformis (Agardh) Kützing was used to investigate the changes in the properties of soluble organic carbon in sediments taken from a coastal wetland. During January to May, sediment extracts became increasingly inhibitory to diatom growth After the onset of the spring rains, the inhibitory properties of the extracts disappeared. Substances capable of promoting mixotrophic growth and heterotrophic growth were found in extracts taken in July to December. These positive responses took place at the time of mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.)leaf-fall.  相似文献

A sensitive modification of the ninhydrin-CO2 method involving the gas chromatographic determination of the total protein and amino acid content of sediment is described. The method gives a linear response over the amino acid concentration range 10–5 M to 4 × 10–2 M. It can be used for whole sediment, hydrolysates and interstitial water. The performance of the method is compared with the fluorescamine method for primary amines.  相似文献

Several sediment parameters were examined in a 40 ha lake with a maximum depth of 9 m and in a 950 ha lake, 26 m deep, from May through October, 1977. Particle size was finer at the deeper stations than at the shallower stations in both lakes. Sediments of the shallow stations generally had a more even grain size distribution. Variation in percent organic carbon and phosphorus among stations of different depths was not significant. However, temporal variation of phosphorus was significant as values increased during summer. Kaolinite was the dominant clay particle in both lakes, but the sediments also included quartz, mica, montmorillonite, and a montmorillonite-vermiculite interlayer. Sedimentation rate was inversely related to depth in the larger lake, while variation among stations in the smaller lake was slight.Research supported with funds from the Office of Water Research and Technology and the Bureau of Reclamation  相似文献
