The environmental conditions in the ocean have long been considered relatively more stable through time compared to the conditions on land. Advances in sensing technologies, however, are increasingly revealing substantial fluctuations in abiotic factors over ecologically and evolutionarily relevant timescales in the ocean, leading to a growing recognition of the dynamism of the marine environment as well as new questions about how this dynamism may influence species' vulnerability to global environmental change. In some instances, the diurnal or seasonal variability in major environmental change drivers, such as temperature, pH and seawater carbonate chemistry, and dissolved oxygen, can exceed the changes expected with continued anthropogenic global change. While ocean global change biologists have begun to experimentally test how variability in environmental conditions mediates species' responses to changes in the mean, the extensive literature on species' adaptations to temporal variability in their environment and the implications of this variability for their evolutionary responses has not been well integrated into the field. Here, we review the physiological mechanisms underlying species' responses to changes in temperature, pCO2/pH (and other carbonate parameters), and dissolved oxygen, and discuss what is known about behavioral, plastic, and evolutionary strategies for dealing with variable environments. In addition, we discuss how exposure to variability may influence species' responses to changes in the mean conditions and highlight key research needs for ocean global change biology. 相似文献

为探明西北旱区甘草Glycyrrhiza uralensis根系深色有隔内生真菌(dark septate endophytes,DSE)生态分布和定殖状况,于2018年7月分别从甘肃安西、民勤和宁夏沙坡头地区采集甘草不同灌丛范围0-10cm和20-30cm土壤和根系样品,系统研究不同样地甘草灌丛内外DSE生态分布及其与土壤因子的相关性。结果表明,不同样地甘草均能被DSE高度侵染,形成典型深色有隔菌丝和微菌核结构。不同样地DSE定殖率差异显著,安西DSE总定殖率(43.34%)显著低于民勤(90%)和沙坡头(88.34%)样地。相关性分析表明,DSE定殖率主要与土壤速效磷、有机碳和碱性磷酸酶显著相关。共分离鉴定11属13种DSE,即Acrocalymma vagum、Alternaria longissima、Alternaria chlamydospora、Alternaria chlamydosporigena、Paraphoma chrysanthemicola、Darksidea alpha、Niesslia aemula、Tricharina ochroleuca、Acremonium nepalense、Fusarium solani、Preussia sp.、Leptosphaeria oraemaris和Ulocladium sp.。其中Acrocalymma vagum是甘草根系DSE优势菌种,为民勤和沙坡头共有种,而安西样地DSE物种多样性最高,共7种。主成分分析表明,安西DSE物种组成在0-10cm和20-30cm不同灌丛范围存在显著差异;单因素方差分析显示,安西和沙坡头DSE菌丝定殖率在距主干0-10cm显著高于20-30cm,说明荒漠环境灌丛覆盖对DSE真菌群落存在显著影响。方差分解结果表明,DSE定殖受样地空间分布、灌丛覆盖和土壤因子共同影响(74.91%),而DSE种类组成更多依赖于样地异质性(84.46%)和土壤养分(87.82%)的作用。研究不同荒漠环境DSE定殖和群落组成差异,有助于充分理解DSE在旱区植物生长和植被恢复中的功能和意义。 相似文献

On the books, the inclusiveness of the Italian framework regulating healthcare access for migrants is indisputable. However, we might wonder how access takes shape on the front-line of the healthcare system, particularly in times of increasingly hostile institutional and discursive environments. By focusing on Italian migration and healthcare policies and the practices of health workers during their encounters with migrants in an irregular situation, this contribution analyses how health workers deal with institutional tensions in the field and how these, in turn, shape their narratives and actions. It suggests that individual positioning plays a major role in favouring the adoption of discretional practices of care or control. Nonetheless, practices are also mediated by the wider institutional and discursive landscape, which has been exponentially characterized by a tension between a medical-humanitarian logic that legitimates providing healthcare to vulnerable migrants, and a control-oriented logic targeting immigration and health expenditure. 相似文献

AbstractItaly is among the European countries with the greatest plant diversity due to both a great environmental heterogeneity and a long history of man–environment interactions. Trait-based approaches to ecological studies have developed greatly over recent decades worldwide, although several issues concerning the relationships between plant functional traits and the environment still lack sufficient empirical evaluation. To draw insights on the association between plant functional traits and direct and indirect human and natural pressures on the environmental drivers, this article summarizes the existing knowledge on this topic by reviewing the results of studies performed in Italy adopting a functional trait approach on vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens. Although we recorded trait measurements for 1418 taxa, our review highlighted some major gaps in plant traits knowledge: Mediterranean ecosystems are poorly represented; traits related to belowground organs are still overlooked; traits measurements for bryophytes and lichens are lacking. Finally, intraspecific variation has been little studied at community level so far. We conclude by highlighting the need for approaches evaluating trait–environment relationship at large spatial and temporal scales and the need of a more effective contribution to online databases to tie more firmly Italian researchers to international scientific networks on plant traits. 相似文献

Human activities and climate change have greatly altered flooding regimes in many of the world's river deltas, but the impact of such changes remains poorly quantified on decadal to multidecadal timescales. This study identified the response of delta lake primary production (measured as the concentration of sedimentary pigments) to variations in flood frequency using spatial surveys and paleolimnological analyses of lakes in the Peace‐Athabasca Delta (PAD), Canada. Surveys of 61 lakes spanning a range of hydrological conditions showed that those lakes that received flood waters less frequently were associated with elevated algal production (surface sedimentary pigments) and, in some lakes, increased growth of emergent macrophytes and epiphytic diatoms. Paleolimnological analyses of five lakes corroborated the contemporary spatial survey results by showing that production of pigments from most algal groups increased during recent periods of lower flood frequency in the 20th century as determined from increases in cellulose‐inferred lake‐water oxygen isotope composition and plant macrofossils, but remained stable in a ‘reference’ basin. In general, past periods of elevated algal production coincided with the increased abundance of submerged macrophytes or emergent vegetation that provide habitat for attached algae. These results suggest that interdecadal declines in river discharge arising from increased aridity, hydrologic regulation or consumptive water use will cause long‐term increases in primary production and alter ecosystem processes (carbon sequestration, biological diversity) in aquatic delta ecosystems similar to the PAD where lakes become nutrient‐rich in the absence of flooding. 相似文献

Background and Aims There is still debate regarding the direction and strength of plant interactions under intermediate to high levels of stress. Furthermore, little is known on how disturbance may interact with physical stress in unproductive environments, although recent theory and models have shown that this interplay may induce a collapse of plant interactions and diversity. The few studies assessing such questions have considered the intensity of biotic interactions but not their importance, although this latter concept has been shown to be very useful for understanding the role of interactions in plant communities. The objective of this study was to assess the interplay between stress and disturbance for plant interactions in dry calcareous grasslands. Methods A field experiment was set up in the Dordogne, southern France, where the importance and intensity of biotic interactions undergone by four species were measured along a water stress gradient, and with and without mowing disturbance. Key Results The importance and intensity of interactions varied in a very similar way along treatments. Under undisturbed conditions, plant interactions switched from competition to neutral with increasing water stress for three of the four species, whereas the fourth species was not subject to any significant biotic interaction along the gradient. Responses to disturbance were more species-specific; for two species, competition disappeared with mowing in the wettest conditions, whereas for the two other species, competition switched to facilitation with mowing. Finally, there were no significant interactions for any species in the disturbed and driest conditions. Conclusions At very high levels of stress, plant performances become too weak to allow either competition or facilitation and disturbance may accelerate the collapse of interactions in dry conditions. The results suggest that the importance and direction of interactions are more likely to be positively related in stressful environments. 相似文献

Humans are characterized by a suite of traits that seem to differentiate them profoundly from closely related apes such as the gorilla, chimpanzee, and orang‐utan. These traits include longevity, cooperative breeding, stacking of offspring, lengthy maturation, and a complex life‐course profile of adiposity. When, how, and why these traits emerged during our evolutionary history is currently attracting considerable attention. Most approaches to life history emphasize dietary energy availability and the risk of mortality as the two key stresses shaping life‐history variability between and within species. The high energy costs of the large Homo brain are also seen as the central axis around which other life‐history traits were reorganized. I propose that ecological volatility may have been a key stress, selecting in favor of the suite of traits in order to tolerate periods of energy scarcity, and increase reproductive output during periods of good conditions. Theses life‐history adaptations may have preceded and enabled the trend toward encephalization. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献
