The diaspore of the Australian arid zone shrub Acacia ligulata is dispersed by birds and ants. To investigate the benefits of providing a dispersal structure attractive to both groups, we compared the germination response and viability of seeds eaten by birds, handled by ants or collected from trees to simulated precursors of germination: scarification, fire and rainfall were simulated. Seed germination and viability were related to the degree of preheating disturbance to the seed coat. Heating increased the germinability of seeds not scarified or eaten by birds. In the absence of heating, ingestion by birds increased germinability. Heating increased the mortality of seeds. Our results suggest that ingestion of seeds by birds may break seed dormancy and hence enable some seeds to germinate soon after dispersal. Alternatively, seeds not eaten by birds are likely to remain dormant until sufficiently scarified by soil or stimulated by fire. Consequently, in areas such as the Simpson Desert, A. ligulata may be able to use a range of seedling establishment ‘windows’ provided by monsoon rains, post‐fire environments and unseasonal winter rains, and also spread the risk of unsuccessful seedling establishment by retaining dormant seeds in the seedbank. 相似文献

This paper presents data on the fish populations of temporary lenitic water bodies along the Middle Paraná River in the Santa Fe and Corrientes areas, some 650 km apart, sampled during 1972. Comparisons are made among the fish faunas present in the various ponds in 1972, and also with data collected in the same areas in the previous four years. Differences in population size, structure, specific diversity and dominance of particular species, are established between the populations of the two areas. A new deep water species from off the Chilean coast, Jerrybuccinum kantori
sp. n., is described. The animal is equipped with a large statocyst. Kryptos explorator Fraussen & Sellanes, 2008 from off Concepción is found to be congeneric and transferred to the genus Jerrybuccinum. Differences in size and sculpture serve to distinguish the new species from J. explorator. Both Chilean species are associated with methane seep or low oxygen environments. They are compared with J. malvinense Kantor & Pastorino, 2009 and two still unnamed species from the Falkland Plateau. 相似文献

operation, and application of a diver-propelled net for efficiently collecting many species of benthic fish that reside on
coral reefs and on kelp-forested rocky reefs. The overall size of the net and mesh size of the netting can be adjusted according
to the size and behavior of targeted species to minimize drag and damage to specimens. Altering these dimensions combined
with proper use of the net can result in a high rate of capture success.

Yeast strains isolated from rock samples collected from worldwide cold regions were identified by sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domains of the 26S rDNA gene and the ITS region followed by molecular phylogeny. Over 77 % of yeasts isolates were Basidiomycota. Cryptococcus (orders Filobasidiales and Tremellales) and Rhodotorula (order Cystobasidiales) were the most frequent genera. Glaciers around the globe are melting rapidly, threatening the receiving environments of the world's fresh water reservoirs with significant changes. The meltwater, carried by rivers, contains large amounts of suspended sediment particles, producing longitudinal gradients in the receiving lakes. These gradients may result in changes in the light : nutrient ratio that affect grazer performance by altering elemental food quality. Thus, glacial melting may induce a shift in the phytoplankton carbon : nutrient ratio and hence influence the dominance of herbivorous zooplankton through stoichiometric mechanisms. To test this hypothesis, we combined field and experimental data, taking advantage of a natural light intensity gradient caused by glacial clay input in a deep oligotrophic Patagonian lake. Across this gradient, we evaluated the abundances of two consumer taxa with different phosphorus requirements, the copepod Boeckella gracilipes and the cladoceran Daphnia commutata, using a six‐station transect along the lake. We found significant differences in light : nutrient ratio and stoichiometric food quality of the seston, together with a switch from dominance of P‐rich Daphnia in low carbon : nutrient stations to dominance of low‐P copepods in high carbon : nutrient stations. The laboratory experiments confirmed that the difference in the carbon : nutrient ratio across the gradient is sufficient to impair Daphnia growth. The overall patterns are consistent with our prediction that shifts in the environmental light : nutrient ratio as a result of glacial melting would contribute to shifts in the dominance of stoichiometrically contrasting taxa in consumer guilds. 相似文献

Climate warming alters plant composition and population dynamics of arctic ecosystems. In particular, an increase in relative abundance and cover of deciduous shrub species (shrubification) has been recorded. We inferred genetic variation of common shrub species (Alnus alnobetula, Betula nana, Salix sp.) through time. Chloroplast genomes were assembled from modern plants (n = 15) from the Siberian forest‐tundra ecotone. Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA; n = 4) was retrieved from a lake on the southern Taymyr Peninsula and analyzed by metagenomics shotgun sequencing and a hybridization capture approach. For A. alnobetula, analyses of modern DNA showed low intraspecies genetic variability and a clear geographical structure in haplotype distribution. In contrast, B. nana showed high intraspecies genetic diversity and weak geographical structure. Analyses of sedaDNA revealed a decreasing relative abundance of Alnus since 5,400 cal yr BP, whereas Betula and Salix increased. A comparison between genetic variations identified in modern DNA and sedaDNA showed that Alnus variants were maintained over the last 6,700 years in the Taymyr region. In accordance with modern individuals, the variants retrieved from Betula and Salix sedaDNA showed higher genetic diversity. The success of the hybridization capture in retrieving diverged sequences demonstrates the high potential for future studies of plant biodiversity as well as specific genetic variation on ancient DNA from lake sediments. Overall, our results suggest that shrubification has species‐specific trajectories. The low genetic diversity in A. alnobetula suggests a local population recruitment and growth response of the already present communities, whereas the higher genetic variability and lack of geographical structure in B. nana may indicate a recruitment from different populations due to more efficient seed dispersal, increasing the genetic connectivity over long distances. 相似文献

Drosophila buzzatii Patterson & Wheeler, a cactophilic species that feeds and breeds in the rotting tissues of various Opuntia cactus species, was inadvertently introduced to Australia from Argentina sometime during the period 1931–1936. After a bottleneck at introduction, its spread through the cactus distribution was probably very rapid as a result of natural dispersal from the site of introduction and from three other foci colonized from the introduction site by human intervention. By 1940, the Opuntia distribution and consequently that of D. buzzatii was reduced to spatially isolated populations, with probable further bottlenecking of at least some of the D. buzzatii populations. Allozyme data (primarily six polymorphic loci) from flies collected during April 1972 to February 1996 at 67 localities were used to examine current population differentiation and relationships, as well as to infer aspects of their demographic history. Although there is significant isolation‐by‐distance, genetic relationships among the populations are not simply related to geographical distance, implying that genetic drift has contributed to population differentiation. However, the biotic and, to an extent, the physical environment are not the same in Australia as in Argentina. Consequently, exposure to novel environments has led to local adaptation and further population differentiation.
