We observed two free-ranging troops of ring-tailed lemurs at the Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. Kinship affinities in these troops are known only for mothers and their offspring 4 years of age. We attempted to quantify social relationships. Almost all agonistic interactions were dyadic, and triadic agonistic interactions, such as alliances, were very rare. Dominance hierarchies in both sexes in the two troops were not linear. As in cercopithecine monkeys, mothers were dominant over their adult daughters. However, the daughters were not ranked immediately below their mothers. Close proximity and social grooming occurred more frequently between closely related females, such as mother–daughter and sister–sister dyads, than between unrelated females. Frequent-proximity relations also occurred between adult males that had emigrated from another troop and entered the present troop together, even though they did not rank closely to one another. Subordinates were likely to groom and to greet dominants more frequently than vice versa. During group encounters, particular females were involved in agonistic interactions with animals of other troops, regardless of dominance rank. Adult males, regardless of their dominance rank, but not adult females, constantly tried to drive solitary males away.  相似文献

We report the integration of single male crowned guenons (Cercopithecus pogonias) into troops of black colobus (Colobus satanas). We observed one male Cercopithecus pogonias in three troops of Colobus satanas on 30% of observation days (n = 231). Activities of single males guenons did not differ significantly from those of the colobus with which they associated. Moreover, both species performed simultaneously the same activities more often than expected by chance. Interspecific grooming occurred on several occasions. Furthermore, single male guenons spent as much in time social activities when part of a colobus troop, as they typically do when part of a conspecific group. Unlike solitary male crowned guenons, which are silent, a male that is integrated into a troop of colobus is vocal and emits social alarm calls to which colobus monkeys respond. During the single file movements of colobus troops, single male crowned guenons were integrated in the core of the troop and used the same branches at the same height with the colobus. Thus, the life of a single male crowned guenon with black colobus was social. We suggest that the main benefits that he gained is the possibility to live in a social context. Social interactions could be the key element to explain why single males Cercopithecus pogonias join troops of monkeys so different from their natal groups.  相似文献

Feeding and burrowing behavior of the monogamous gobiid fish,Valenciennea longipinnis, were studied on the coral reef at Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. These fish usually live in pairs, the male and female feeding in close proximity to one another upon benthic animals and constructing several burrows cooperatively for purposes of shelter or spawning. Paired females fed more and burrowed less frequently than their mates. Because burrow maintenance was mostly conducted by the latter, the paired females performed work much less frequently than solitary females. Thus, the paired females may be able to allocate more energy toward egg production. The division of labor related to burrowing behavior in this species may be an effective way to increase reproductive success for both sexes. Moreover, the fameles burrowed even less frequently when paired with larger males, probably because burrowing ability may be correlated with mouth size in males. This is a likely reason for the preference of females to mate with larger males.  相似文献

I studied reproductive behavior of females of the gregarious ground-nesting bee Dieunomia triangulifera (Halictidae). During peak bloom of the host plant, Helianthus annuus, some females consistently brought pollen to one nest (provisioning bees), whereas others visited many nests without taking pollen to any (searching bees). Searching bees were more likely to have two or more developed oocytes and crops full of pollen. The ingested pollen probably provided protein for egg production. The differing behavior of provisioning and searching bees combined with contrasting internal morphology, indicated that these two sets of behaviors were alternative reproductive strategies. Three possible explanations for the searching bees' behavior included: usurpation, floating, or intraspecific cleptoparasitism. Each of these is evaluated as a possible function of searching behavior. Given the evidence I conclude that intraspecific cleptoparasitism is the most likely explanation.  相似文献

The ecology of a species strongly influences the strategies with which males and females maximize their lifetime reproductive success. When males and females do not invest equally in offspring, the sex with the higher parental investment becomes a rare resource for the other. The spatial and temporal distribution of the limiting sex forms the basis of the mating system. In nest-constructing Aculeata such as the red mason bee, Osmia rufa, females perform intensive brood care, whereas males do not invest in their offspring but instead compete for access to mates. Receptive females of this species are widely distributed and do not assemble at certain places. Therefore, territorial behavior is not an advantageous mating tactic for males, which instead search for females within individual home ranges usually centered around food plants. The unmarked or defended home ranges of different males may completely overlap. Competitive searching leads to a random distribution of matings among males that is largely independent of body size. The mating system of O. rufa can be described as scramble competition polygyny.  相似文献

A second CT scan of the mummy Djedmaatesankh, which is housed in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Ontario, has been undertaken after an interval of some 15 years. The image data set of her dentition and the associated tissues acquired from 3 mm thick × 3 mm spacing slices was transferred to an ISG Allegro work station where two-dimensional reformats and three-dimensional reconstructions were produced. This non-invasive examination provided information on dental disease that is, in a number of respects, an advance on that which previously could be obtained from mummies by the traditional methods of visual inspection after unwrapping and by two-dimensional radiography. The two- and three-dimensional images reveal that: three molars are missing and the right maxillary canine is impacted; the rest of the dentition is afflicted by severe attrition, caries and periodontal disease; and, of the 28 teeth present in the mouth, 24 exhibit exposure of their dental pulps and 18 are afflicted by periapical lesions including five that could have contributed to a large secondarily infected radicular cyst. The cyst has displaced the maxillary antrum and enlarged the maxilla on its lateral aspect and the vault of the palate on its medial aspect. Pus from the cyst may have drained through five different sinuses. In life, Djedmaatesankh's widespread dental infection probably caused her considerable pain, personal distress and malaise, and possibly resulted in her death. Osteocytes and articular chondrocytes sense and respond to the strains imposed on bones and joints by various activities such as breathing and walking. This mechanoresponsiveness is needed to maintain bone and cartilage microstructure and strength. In bone the large number of osteocytes form a vast osteointernet in which the gap junctionally interconnected members are lodged in an extensive lacunocanalicular network. The much smaller number of articular chondrocytes are not interconnected in a chondrointernet. Instead, they are separately lodged in capsules called chondrons. While there are many possible strain-sensing devices, it now appears that the non-motile solitary (primary) cilia protruding like aerials from osteocytes (as well as osteoblasts) and chondrocytes are switches that when toggled by cyclical pulses of lacunocanalicular fluid or cartilage compression send signals such as Ca2+ surges into the cell to trigger a cascade of events that include appropriate gene activations to maintain and strengthen bone and cartilage. Moreover, the chondrocyte cilium with its Ihh(Indian hedgehog)-activated Smo receptor is a key player along with PTHrP in endochondral bone formation.  相似文献

Eustenogaster nigra in the northern part of Vietnam has a synchronized, bivoltine colony cycle with winter dormancy. The males go through the winter dormancy in an envelope nest together with virgin females, and mating takes place after they emerge from the winter dormancy. The individuals overwintering in a given nest are often non-sibs. Females, including those emerging from the winter dormancy, start their colony singly. These suggest that winter nests function simply as hibernacula. The solitary life in E. nigra in northern Vietnam is discussed in comparison with that of E. scitula in central Vietnam where the mating usually takes place before entering the winter dormancy and only females overwinter. Ectopic accumulation of lipids in peripheral tissues, such as pancreatic β cells, liver, heart and skeletal muscle, leads to lipotoxicity, a process that contributes substantially to the pathophysiology of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, steatotic liver disease and heart failure. Current evidence has demonstrated that hypothalamic sensing of circulating lipids and modulation of hypothalamic endogenous fatty acid and lipid metabolism are two bona fide mechanisms modulating energy homeostasis at the whole body level. Key enzymes, such as AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and fatty acid synthase (FAS), as well as intermediate metabolites, such as malonyl-CoA and long-chain fatty acids-CoA (LCFAs-CoA), play a major role in this neuronal network, integrating peripheral signals with classical neuropeptide-based mechanisms. However, one key question to be addressed is whether impairment of lipid metabolism and accumulation of specific lipid species in the hypothalamus, leading to lipotoxicity, have deleterious effects on hypothalamic neurons. In this review, we summarize what is known about hypothalamic lipid metabolism with focus on the events associated to lipotoxicity, such as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the hypothalamus. A better understanding of these molecular mechanisms will help to identify new drug targets for the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome.  相似文献
