The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in protein expression in the testes of ganders at various breeding stages. A total of nine 3-year-old male White Roman ganders were used. The blood and testis samples were collected at the nonbreeding, sexual reactivation, and breeding stages for sex hormone analysis and proteomic analysis, respectively. The testicular weight and serum testosterone observed for ganders at the breeding stage were higher than those for ganders at nonbreeding and sexual reactivation stages (P?<?0.05). There were 124 protein spots differentially expressed in the testes of ganders at various reproductive stages. A total of 107 protein spots of 74 proteins was identified through mass spectrometry. Most of the differentially expressed proteins were responsible for the molecular functions of protein binding (24%) and catalytic activity (16%). A functional pathway analysis suggested that proteins involved in steroidogenesis, metabolism, and spermatogenesis pathways changed in the White Roman geese at various reproductive stages. In conclusion, ganders at various reproductive stages exhibited different levels of testosterone and protein expression in the testes. The varied levels of the proteins might be essential and unique key factors in seasonal reproduction in ganders.  相似文献

Armadillidium pelagicum Arcangeli, 1955 is a terrestrial isopod endemic to the circum-Sicilian islands and the North of Tunisia. The life cycle and the population structure of this species were studied on a natural population at Aouina, in the surroundings of Tunis, over 16 months from, January 2000 to April 2001, by monthly or semi-monthly samplings. The ovigerous females were present from March/April to the end of August and absent from September to February/March. These observations indicate that A. pelagicum at Aouina has a seasonal reproduction, followed by a sexual rest. The recruitment period is spread from April/May to mid-September. The fecundity, estimated by the number of eggs in the marsupium of ovigerous females, exhibited a great variability, which is related to the weight of these females. The sex ratio underwent fluctuations throughout the sampling period. It was female-biased in most samplings. Mass frequency distribution was analysed and nine cohorts were identified during the sampling period. The field growth rates are high in the first life phase, decrease during winter and increase during spring. The characteristics of the life cycle of A. pelagicum at Aouina may be summarized as follows: (i) Semi-annual species, since females appear to produce up to five broods per year, (ii) iteroparous females, since females seem to reproduce twice or more in life; (iii) bivoltine life cycle, since the population produces two generations per year; (iv) variability of cohorts' life span.  相似文献

Concentrations of the antioxidants ascorbate and glutathione were measured in the apoplast of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) leaves and in leaf tissue. During early leaf development, reduced ascorbate (ASC) was almost absent from the apoplast, whereas levels of oxidized ascorbate (DHA) were high. Less than 20% of the apoplastic ascorbate was reduced. ASC increased towards midsummer, reaching top levels of about 4molm?3 apoplast volume in July and August. Reduction increased to 60–75% in summer. Neither DHA reductase nor glutathione was detected in the apoplast of beech leaves. Levels of apoplastic ascorbate were compared with ambient concentrations of ozone in air. Statistical analysis indicated a significant interrelation between atmospheric ozone and apoplastic ascorbate. In midsummer of 1993, contents of DHA were increased in the apoplast when ozone concentrations were high. Apoplastic ASC was also positively correlated with ambient ozone concentrations, but with a delay of 3 to 7d. In leaf tissue, levels of ascorbate were between 17 and 21 μmolg?1 FW in summer. Except for late April and November, more than 95% of the intracellular ascorbate was reduced. Glutathione contents were lowest during the summer. Oxidation was increased in spring and autumn, when apoplastic ascorbate was also largely oxidized. Usually, 80 to 90% of the glutathione was reduced. During the summer, intracellular concentrations of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were increased, with a delay of about 1d following periods of high ambient ozone concentrations. The transitory accumulation of GSSG may be explained by slow enzymatic regeneration of glutathione.  相似文献

The anatomical distribution and seasonal variations in aromatase activity and in the number of aromatase-immunoreactive cells were studied in the brain of free-living male pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca). A high aromatase activity was detected in the telencephalon and diencephalon but low to negligible levels were present in the optic lobes, cerebellum, and brain stem. In the diencephalon, most aromatase-immunoreactive cells were confined to three nuclei implicated in the control of reproductive behaviors: the medial preoptic nucleus, the nucleus of the stria terminalis, and the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus. In the telencephalon, the immunopositive cells were clustered in the medial part of the neostriatum and in the hippocampus as previously described in another songbird species, the zebra finch. No immunoreactive cells could be observed in the song control nuclei. A marked drop in aromatase activity was detected in the anterior and posterior diencephalon in the early summer when the behavior of the birds had switched from defending a territory to helping the female in feeding the nestlings. This enzymatic change is presumably controlled by the drop in plasma testosterone levels observed at that stage of the reproductive cycle. No change in enzyme activity, however, was seen at that time in other brain areas. The number of aromatase-immunoreactive cells also decreased at that time in the caudal part of the medial preoptic nucleus but not in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (an increase was even observed), suggesting that differential mechanisms control the enzyme concentration and enzyme activity in the hypothalamus. Taken together, these data suggest that changes in diencephalic aromatase activity contribute to the control of seasonal variations in reproductive behavior of male pied flycatchers but the role of the telencephalic aromatase in the control of behavior remains unclear at present.  相似文献

短命植物是荒漠生态系统的重要组成部分。为了解短命植物叶片N、P化学计量特征随生长季变化的特点,选择古尔班通古特沙漠6种优势短命植物(3种一年生短命植物,3种多年生类短命植物)为研究对象,对比了2种生活型短命植物叶片N、P化学计量特征随生长季变化特点。结果表明,3种一年生短命植物尖喙牻牛儿苗(Erodium oxyrrhynchum)、小花荆芥(Nepeta micrantha)以及条叶庭芥(Alyssum linifolium)N含量平均值(±标准差)分别为(11.23±7.16)、(14.11±6.38)和(10.85±6.14)mg·g–1;P含量平均值分别为(2.82±0.73)、(3.12±1.24)和(3.43±0.55)mg·g–1;3种多年生类短命植物独尾草(Eremurus chinensis)、雅葱(Scorzonera pusilla)和簇花芹(Soranthus meyeri)N含量的平均值分别为(19.97±5.94)(15.08±4.01)和(17.94±9.03)mg·g–1;P含量平均值分别为(3.55±0.83)、(2.73±1.11)和(5.03±0.65)mg·g–1。由此可见,短命植物在生长过程中叶片N-P化学计量特征存在一定差异。各物种N、P含量在生长初期都大于其它生长季节,在生长旺季随叶片生物量增加,N、P含量呈下降趋势;而在生长末季N、P含量又有所回升。相关性分析表明,不同生活型短命植物元素间的关系存在差异,但同一生活型短命植物元素间的关系并无显著差异,体现了种内一致性。  相似文献

Most temperate-zone species use photoperiod to coordinate breeding and ensure that offspring are born during favourable conditions. Although photoperiodic influences on the reproductive axis have been well characterized, the precise mechanisms by which photoperiodic information and other seasonal cues are integrated to regulate reproductive function remain less well specified. Two recently discovered neuropeptides, kisspeptin and gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone, have pronounced opposing influences on reproductive function. This paper will review recent evidence for a role of these peptides in seasonal reproduction and propose a theoretical framework by which these novel regulatory peptides may serve to regulate seasonal breeding. Understanding the mechanisms regulating appropriate changes in reproductive status will serve to advance a wide range of life science disciplines.  相似文献

Litter processing was examined in autumn–winter and spring–summer in a second order stream in Galicia (NW Spain). We compared decay rate and nutrient dynamics of green leaves of several deciduous (riparian: Alnus glutinosa, Betula alba and Populus×canadensis; terrestrial: Castanea sativa, Quercus robur), and evergreen tree species (terrestrial: Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus nitens), in addition to ray-grass (Lolium perenne). In the autumn–winter period, the decay rates (–k) ranged between 0.0086 degree-days–1 for poplar, and 0.0019 degree-days–1 for birch leaves. Alder showed the most rapid breakdown in spring–summer (0.0124 degree-days–1), and pine the slowest (0.0016 degree-days–1). Deciduous species exhibited general higher processing rates than evergreen species and ray-grass. The initial nitrogen and phosphorus contents were higher in riparian species leaves and ray-grass, being higher in spring (2.28±0.14% and 0.24±0.04% of nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively) than in autumn (1.88±0.36% of nitrogen and 0.18±0.03% of phosphorus). A significant correlation coefficient was found only between mean nitrogen leaf packs contents during incubation and decay rates (r=0.61; p=0.012).In deciduous species, processing was faster during the spring–summer than in the autumn–winter period, which may be attributed to the greater nutritional value and less consistency of the leaves during this season. Within evergreen species, pine had a significantly faster processing rate in autumn, attributed in this study to greater physical fragmentation of the needles. Ray-grass and eucalyptus did not exhibit any seasonal differences in processing rate.During the spring–summer period, litterfall inputs are quantitatively less important than during the autumn–winter, but due to high retention and fast breakdown during the spring–summer, green inputs should contribute substantially to nutrient incorporation and cycling in benthic communities.  相似文献

It is now known that several population movements have taken place at different times throughout southern Arabian prehistory. One of the principal questions under debate is if the Early Holocene peopling of southern Arabia was mainly due to input from the Levant during the Pre‐Pottery Neolithic B, to the expansion of an autochthonous population, or some combination of these demographic processes. Since previous genetic studies have not been able to include all parts of southern Arabia, we have helped fill this lacuna by collecting new population datasets from Oman (Dhofar) and Yemen (Al‐Mahra and Bab el‐Mandab). We identified several new haplotypes belonging to haplogroup R2 and generated its whole genome mtDNA tree with age estimates undertaken by different methods. R2, together with other considerably frequent southern Arabian mtDNA haplogroups (R0a, HV1, summing up more than 20% of the South Arabian gene pool) were used to infer the past effective population size through Bayesian skyline plots. These data indicate that the southern Arabian population underwent a large expansion already some 12 ka. A founder analysis of these haplogroups shows that this expansion is largely attributed to demographic input from the Near East. These results support thus the spread of a population coming from the north, but at a significantly earlier date than presently considered by archaeologists. Our data suggest that some of the mtDNA lineages found in southern Arabia have persisted in the region since the end of the Last Ice Age.
