The influence of structural complexity on the foraging success for host eggs (Ephestia kuehniella Zeller) by Trichogramma minutum Riley was investigated in the laboratory. Naive females were released into arenas with structurally different paper models or foliage (simple: trembling aspen Populus tremuloides Michx., complex: balsam fir Abies balsamea L.). Observations of individual females were made every 15 min and searching success was measured by the number of host egg clusters found and the amount of time taken to find them, within a period of 196 min. Females found significantly more egg clusters and were quicker at finding them on the sample paper and foliage surfaces than on the most complex paper or foliage surfaces. Older females (2–3 days) were more successful and searched quicker than younger (<24 h) females on all paper surfaces. The timed observations suggested that wasps which spent more time walking had a significantly decreased probability of finding an egg mass and were significantly slower at finding them. Females that spent more time on paper surfaces had an increased probability of finding an egg mass. The significance of searching differences is discussed in relation to the potential effects of plant surfaces on Trichogramma movements and to the physiological readiness of the wasp.  相似文献

This paper provides an overview of the research that has been carried out in Sheffield over the last decade into searching techniques for databases of three-dimensional (3D) chemical structures. A 3D structure or query pattern is represented by a labelled graph, in which the nodes and the edges of the graph are used to represent atoms and the associated inter-atomic distances, respectively. The presence of a pharmacophore in each of the structures in a database can then be tested by means of a subgraph isomorphism algorithm, the computational requirements of which are minimized by the use of an initial screening procedure that eliminates the majority of the structures from the subgraph-isomorphism search. Analogous graph-based representation and searching methods can also be used with flexible 3D structures: in this case, the edges of the graphs represent inter-atomic distance ranges and a final conformational search needs to be carried out for those molecules that match the query pharmacophore in the subgraph-isomorphism search. The paper also reviews related work on the automatic identification of pharmacophoric patterns and on 3D similarity searching.  相似文献

Although female parasitic wasps are known to learn to associate odors with hosts and food, the ability of males to learn and detect odors has been neglected. We conducted laboratory experiments to compare the detection ability of learned odors between males and females in the larval parasitoid Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). We first conditioned males and females to associate sucrose water with methyl benzoate, 3‐octanone, or cyclohexanone, and then observed their behavior toward various concentrations (40 ng l?1?4 mg l?1) of the trained odors. Conditioned male wasps responded as well as female wasps to various concentrations of the three odors. Response times by wasps to these three odors were not significantly different between sexes. For the three odors, response times of both sexes were longer at the intermediate concentrations (40–400 µg l?1) than the higher or lower concentrations. The present study suggests that M. croceipes males can learn and respond to the three chemicals tested as well as the females, and conditioned males are as sensitive to learned odors as conditioned females. By using their sensitive learning and odor‐detection capabilities, M. croceipes males could search for food sources as efficiently as females under natural conditions.  相似文献

Although many predators and parasitoids are known to respond to odours produced by plants infested with their prey under laboratory conditions, there are actually few studies that show that this response leads to higher numbers of predators or parasitoids on the plants under natural conditions. Here we study the response of predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, Acari, Phytoseiidae) to odours from cucumber plants infested with two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch, Acari, Tetranychidae) in greenhouse release experiments, where predators were released in the centre of a hexagon of cucumber plants. Forty to 57% of all predators released were recaptured on plants within 7 h. Of these, an average of 79.5% were found on infested plants, indicating that these attract about 4 times as many predators as do clean plants. Hence, the blind predatory mites were guided to the plants with prey by herbivore-induced odours produced by the plant, as was indicated by olfactometer experiments, where it was found that P. persimilis preferred odours from infested cucumber plants to odours from clean cucumber plants. The long-range searching behaviour of P. persimilis is discussed.  相似文献

While searching for food, prey can use cues associated with their predators to select patches with a reduced predation risk. In many cases, odours indicate the presence of both food and predators. Spider mites are known to use odours to locate food and mates, but also to avoid interspecific competitors. We studied the response of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, to cues associated with the presence of their predators, the phytoseiid Phytoseiulus persimilis. We found that the spider mites strongly avoid plants defended by this predator, but do not avoid plants with another predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus. Since P. persimilis is commonly used in the greenhouse where our strain of T. urticae was collected and strains of this pest are known to adapt to greenhouse environments, we hypothesize that there has been selection on the pest to recognize its enemy. We further hypothesize that there has been no selection to recognize N. californicus, as it has not been used against two-spotted spider mites in the greenhouse where our spider mites were collected. We discuss the implications of avoidance of predation by spider mites and non-lethal effects of predators for biological control of this pest in greenhouses.  相似文献

Anagrus atomus L. is an important egg parasitoid of the green leafhopper Empoasca decipiens Paoli. In this study the ability of the parasitoid to locate and parasitize its host was investigated on four host plants, i.e., broad beans (Vicia faba L.), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), and French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). For each plant species, the behavior of the parasitoid was observed on E. decipiens infested and noninfested plants. Searching and oviposition behavior were characterized by drumming, probing, and resting. Parasitoids spent significantly less time on non-infested than infested plants, 274.5 and 875.7 s, respectively, and no probing behavior was observed on non-infested plants. Frequency of resting behavior was significantly greater on non-infested than on infested plants. Total foraging time was significantly longer on infested than on non-infested plants, indicating that A. atomus females can efficiently discriminate between leaves with and without infestation. Parasitism of A. atomus was influenced by parasitoid density, with the highest parasitism rate (64.0%) obtained at a density of 10 A. atomus females/0.1356 m2 but the number of parasitized eggs per female and the searching efficiency decreased with increasing parasitoid density.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The effect of experience of plant cues at emergence on searching behaviour and parasitism was investigated in two strains of Trichogramma nr. brassicae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).
2. Wasps reared on Sitotroga cereallela were allowed to emerge on a tomato plant or in a vial, with or without food. For one of the strains, females emerging on tomato searched significantly longer on a tomato seedling than females emerging in a vial.
3. The experience effect lasted between 1 and 2 days. It involves associating plant stimuli with the remains of the host, because females emerging from their host on a tomato plant had an increased searching response to tomato, but females transferred to the plant immediately after emergence did not.
4. The effect of emergence environment on parasitism of the host Helicoverpa punctigera on tomato and lettuce seedlings was tested. Wasps were allowed to emerge on seedlings of tomato or lettuce, or in an empty vial. For one strain, females experienced with tomato at emergence parasitized significantly more hosts on tomato than did females emerging on lettuce or in a vial. Parasitism on lettuce was not influenced by the treatments.  相似文献

Using energy minimization and cluster analysis, we have analyzed a 1020 ps molecular dynamics trajectory of solvated bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor. Elucidation of conformational sub states in this way both illustrates the degree of conformational convergence in the simulation and reduces the structural data to a tractable subset. The relative movement of structures upon energy minimization was used to estimate the sizes of features on the protein potential energy surface. The structures were analyzed using their pairwise root-mean-square Cα deviations, which gave a global measure of conformational changes that would not be apparent by monitoring single degrees of freedom. At time scales of 0.1 ps, energy minimization detected sharp transitions between energy minima separated by 0.1 Å rms deviation. Larger conformational clusters containing these smaller minima and separated by 0.25 Å were seen at 1 ps time scales. Both of these small features of the conformational landscape were characterized by movements in loop regions associated with small, correlated backbone dihedral angle shifts. On a nanosecond time scale, the main features of the protein energy landscape were clusters separated by over 0.7 Å rms deviation, with only seven of these sub states visited over the 1 ns trajectory. These substates, discernible both before and after energy minimization, differ mainly in a monotonic pivot of the loop residues 11–18 over the course of the simulation. This loop contains lysine 17, which specifically binds to trypsin in the active site. The trajectory did not return to previously visited clusters, indicating that this trajectory has not been shown to have completely sampled the conformational substates available to it. Because the apparent convergence to a single region of conformation space depends on both the time scale of observation and the size of the conformational features examined, convergence must be operationally defined within the context of the simulation. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
