The occurrence and strength of interactions among natural enemies and herbivores depend on their foraging decisions, and several of these decisions are based on odours. To investigate interactions among arthropods in a greenhouse cropping system, we studied the behavioural response of the predatory bug Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) towards cucumber plants infested either with thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)) or with spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae)). In greenhouse release-recapture experiments, the predatory bug showed a significant preference for both thrips-infested plants and spider mite-infested plants over clean plants. Predatory bugs preferred plants infested with spider mites to plants with thrips. Experience with spider mites on cucumber leaves prior to their release in the greenhouse had no effect on the preference of the predatory bugs. However, this experience did increase the percentage of predators recaptured. Y-tube olfactometer experiments showed that O. laevigatus was more attracted to odours from plants infested with spider mites than to odours from clean plants. Thus, O. laevigatus is able to perceive odours and may use them to find plants with prey in more natural conditions. The consequences of the searching behaviour for pest control are discussed.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the role of learning in olfactory host searching by the ichneumonid pupal parasitoid, Pimpla luctuosa Smith. Females learned to associate novel odors such as vanilla and strawberry with hosts when they oviposited in at least several hosts with the odors. Repeated experiences of hosts with an odor increased the response of the experienced odor, and females that had experienced host odor seven times responded to the experienced odors 90% of the time. Although the response by females to a learned odor gradually decreased with increasing host-deprivation time, 60% of the females that had experienced host odor 7 days earlier still responded to the experienced odor. Females also learned two separate odors associated with hosts at a time and responded to both odors without a preference for one odor over the other. When trained two separate odors with hosts, females learned the second odor more quickly than the first odor. After females experienced several stings in simulated hosts with the previously learned odor, they ceased to respond to the learned odor, suggesting that repeated unrewarding experiences cause females to cease to respond to the learned odors.  相似文献

灰白蚕蛾Ocinara varians Walker是近几年来我国南方发生比较严重的园林害虫之一,赤眼蜂是其卵期的一种重要天敌,为寻找灰白蚕蛾有效的生物防治措施,本实验研究了半自然条件下松毛虫赤眼蜂Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura和短管赤眼蜂Trichogramma pretiosum Riley对灰白蚕蛾卵的搜索寄生能力。实验结果表明,在挂卵量相同的情况下,3种不同经历的松毛虫赤眼蜂和短管赤眼蜂对灰白蚕蛾卵的搜索能力都随蜂卵比的减小而降低。在各蜂卵比下,3种不同处理的松毛虫赤眼蜂对灰白蚕蛾卵的寄生率明显高于相应地3种不同处理的短管赤眼蜂。在蜂卵比为1∶1时,具有羽化后学习经历的松毛虫赤眼蜂对灰白蚕蛾卵的搜索能力最强,其寄生率达50.66%,显著高于幼期学习蜂和无经验蜂,而幼期学习经历对其搜索效果无明显地影响。短管赤眼蜂无论是羽化后学习经历还是幼期学习经历对其搜索行为均无明显影响。  相似文献

The presence of nonprey or nonhosts is known to reduce the strength of consumer– resource interactions by increasing the consumer's effort needed to find its resource. These interference effects can have a stabilizing effect on consumer–resource dynamics, but have also been invoked to explain parasitoid extinctions. To understand how nonhosts affect parasitoids, we manipulated the density and diversity of nonhost aphids using experimental host–parasitoid communities and tested how this affects parasitation efficiency of two aphid parasitoid species. To further study the behavioral response of parasitoids to nonhosts, we tested for changes in parasitoid time allocation in relation to their host‐finding strategies. The proportion of successful attacks (attack rate) in both parasitoid species was reduced by the presence of nonhosts. The parasitoid Aphidius megourae was strongly affected by increasing nonhost diversity with the attack rate dropping from 0.39 without nonhosts to 0.05 with high diversity of nonhosts, while Lysiphlebus fabarum responded less strongly, but in a more pronounced way to an increase in nonhost density. Our experiments further showed that increasing nonhost diversity caused host searching and attacking activity levels to fall in A. megourae, but not in L. fabarum, and that A. megourae changed its behavior after a period of time in the presence of nonhosts by increasing its time spent resting. This study shows that nonhost density and diversity in the environment are crucial determinants for the strength of consumer–resource interactions. Their impact upon a consumer's efficiency strongly depends on its host/prey finding strategy as demonstrated by the different responses for the two parasitoid species. We discuss that these trait‐mediated indirect interactions between host and nonhost species are important for community stability, acting either stabilizing or destabilizing depending on the level of nonhost density or diversity present.  相似文献

In unifested fields, 80 cassava tips were artificially infested with 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 third instars, and 20 or 100 eggs of cassava mealybug,Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hom., Pseudococcidae). Another 80 uninfested tips served as a control. Tips were arranged in a circle of 28 m diameter, in the centre of which the following exotic natural enemies ofP. manihoti were released:Apoanagyrus (Epidinocarsis) lopezi De Santis andA. diversicornis (Howard) (Hym., Encyrtidae),Hyperaspis notata (Mulsant) andDiomus hennesseyi Fürsch (Col., Coccinellidae), and others. This experiment was repeated six times. During the 4–14 days following release, all experimental tips were inspected at two-hour intervals during each day and the presence of exotic as well as indigenous natural enemies, likeExochomus troberti Mulsant (Col., Coccinellidae), ants and spiders was noted. The experiment was repeated six times measured the aggregative response by the natural enemies to different host densities, achieved through host attractance and arrestment. All exotic natural enemies, except the males ofApoanagyrus spp., were fast attracted to the host colonies. As compared to the control tips, they concentrated on the infested tips about 50-fold for the twoApoanagyrus spp. and 10 to 20-fold for the exotic coccinellids. By contrast, non-coevolved indigenous coccinellids, as well as generalist predators like ants and spiders were attracted to the infested tips only 2 to 5-fold.A. lopezi responded best to different host densities, followed byA. diversicornis and the coccinellids, followed by ants and spiders. None of the parasitoids or predators was particularly attracted to egg masses. These results correspond closely to the known efficiencies of these natural enemies,A. lopezi standing out among all candidates. The results of such aggregation studies are compared with those of life-table studies.  相似文献

DNA barcoding is based on the use of short DNA sequences to provide taxonomic tags for rapid, efficient identification of biological specimens. Currently, reference databases are being compiled. In the future, it will be important to facilitate access to these databases, especially for nonspecialist users. The method described here provides a rapid, web-based, user-friendly link between the DNA sequence from an unidentified biological specimen and various types of biological information, including the species name. Specifically, we use a customized, Google-type search algorithm to quickly match an unknown DNA sequence to a list of verified DNA barcodes in the reference database. In addition to retrieving the species name, our web tool also provides automatic links to a range of other information about that species. As the DNA barcode database becomes more populated, it will become increasingly important for the broader user community to be able to exploit it for the rapid identification of unknown specimens and to easily obtain relevant biological information about these species. The Palaeoarctic parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae) parasitises legume aphids in its region of origin. In Chile, it parasitises both legume and cereal aphids. This special situation was studied at two levels: (i) the host searching behaviour of A. ervi from two different tritrophic systems (Acyrthosiphon pisum on alfalfa and Sitobion avenae on wheat) was investigated in dual choice tests in a wind tunnel between odours from both A. pisum-alfalfa host plant complex (HPC) and S. avenae-wheat HPC, and (ii) the genetic structure of A. ervi populations from both sources using molecular markers. Responses of A. ervi females to volatile olfactory cues emanating from A. pisum-alfalfa HPC and S. avenae-wheat HPC were significantly higher towards the HPC on which they were reared during the last generation before experimentation, regardless of the origin of the parasitoid. As previously described for this parasitoid species, oviposition experience was also of major relevance in the preferences of female parasitoids. On the other hand, variation in mitochondrial DNA segments and RAPD-PCR polymorphism using total DNA showed the absence of host-based population structure and a high genetic homogeneity between these A. ervi populations. These results reject the possible existence of different host-strains of this parasitoid in Chile.  相似文献

A kairomone produced by the rice white-backed planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) for the mymarid egg parasitoid Anagrus nilaparvatae Pang et Wang was investigated. Eggs, female and male adults, nymphs, exuvia, honeydew, nymph-damaged plants and plants with S. furcifera eggs all elicited searching behavior in the parasitoid. Eggs, female adults and plants with eggs were the most attractive, while exuvia and honeydew evoked the weakest responses. The active compound(s) from S. furcifera female adults, nymphs and plants with eggs could be effectively extracted with methanol, acetone, n-hexane, ethyl ether and dichloromethane. Isolation of the active chemical(s) in three solvent extracts, the acetone and n-hexane extracts of S. furcifera female adults, and the acetone extract of S. furcifera nymphs, was accomplished by thin-layer chromatography. Only one fraction was active and had the same chemical properties in the three solvent extracts. Infra-red analysis of this fraction revealed a kind of ester with saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, which was previously found to be active in the same compound as the extracts from the nymphs and female adults of the rice brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), and identified as palm oil. The results are discussed in relation to host location by A. nilaparvatae.  相似文献

Structure- and ligand-based virtual-screening methods (docking, 2D- and 3D-similarity searching) were analyzed for their effectiveness in virtual screening against FFAR2. To evaluate the performance of these methods, retrospective virtual screening was performed. Statistical quality of the methods was evaluated by BEDROC and RIE. The results revealed that electrostatic similarity search protocol using EON (ET combo) outperformed all other protocols with outstanding enrichment of >95% in top 1% and 2% of the dataset with an AUC of 0.958. Interestingly, the hit lists that are obtained from different virtual-screening methods are generally highly complementary to hits found from electrostatic similarity searching. These results suggest that considering electrostatic similarity searching first increases the chance of identifying more (and more diverse) active compounds from a virtual-screening campaign. Accordingly, prospective virtual screening using electrostatic similarity searching was used to identify novel FFAR2 ligands. The discovered compounds provide new chemical matter starting points for the initiation of a medicinal chemistry campaign.  相似文献
