Sea ice microalgae are released from their relatively stable light environment to the water column seasonally, and any subsequent growth in a vertically mixed water column may depend, in part, on their photoadaptation rates. In this study we followed the time course of photoadaptation in natural sea ice algal communities from bottom ice and surface ice by measuring their photophysiological response to an artificial shift in the ambient irradiance field. Microalgae from under-ice habitats, were incubated under full sunlight (LL-HL) and microalgae from surface ice habitats were incubated under artificial light to mimic under-ice irradiance (HL-LL). During 3- to 4-day time course studies, opposite shifts in chlorophyll: carbon, α, PBm, and Ik were observed, depending on the direction of the irradiance change. First-order rate constants (k) ranged from 0.0067 to 0.29 h?1 for photosynthetic parameters, although PBm did not always show a clear change over time. Rates of photoadaptation for ice algae are comparable to k values reported for temperate phytoplankton, suggesting that sea ice algae may be equally capable of adapting to the light conditions experienced in a vertically mixed water column. This study presents the first evidence that sea ice microalgae are physiologically capable of adapting to a planktonic life and thus could serve as a seed population for polar marine phytoplankton blooms. 相似文献

Ice diatom assemblages in the Canadian Arctic are dominated by the Naviculaceae, a family which includes the genus Stenoneis Cleve. A taxonomic history of S. inconspicua var. baculus (Cleve) Cleve (including type material of Navicula baculus Cleve) is presented with morphological data including the first SEM views of the genus. Stenoneis inconspicua var. baculus was compared with S. obtuserostrata (Hustedt) comb. nov. (basionym: Navicula obtuserostrata Hustedt). In the SEM, external, short, flattened siliceous ridges were revealed beside the proximal parts of the raphe branches and central pores. This may be a significant taxonomic feature of the genus. Valves of S. inconspicua var. baculus ranged from 40–103 μm in length, 7–11 μm in width and had 17–20 striae in 10 μm, whereas valves of S. obtuserostrata were shorter (27–53 μm), narrower (6–7.5 μm) and more finely striated (24–30 in 10 μm). The pantropical sea urchin genus Eucidaris contains four currently recognized species, all of them allopatric: E. metularia in the Indo-West Pacific, E. thouarsi in the eastern Pacific, E. tribuloides in both the western and eastern Atlantic, and E. clavata at the central Atlantic islands of Ascension and St. Helena. We sequenced a 640-bp region of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene of mitochondrial DNA to determine whether this division of the genus into species was confirmed by molecular markers, to ascertain their phylogenetic relations, and to reconstruct the history of possible dispersal and vicariance events that led to present-day patterns of species distribution. We found that E. metularia split first from the rest of the extant species of the genus. If COI divergence is calibrated by the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama, the estimated date of the separation of the Indo-West Pacific species is 4.7–6.4 million years ago. This date suggests that the last available route of genetic contact between the Indo-Pacific and the rest of the tropics was from west to east through the Eastern Pacific Barrier, rather than through the Tethyan Sea or around the southern tip of Africa. The second cladogenic event was the separation of eastern Pacific and Atlantic populations by the Isthmus of Panama. Eucidaris at the outer eastern Pacific islands (Galapagos, Isla del Coco, Clipperton Atoll) belong to a separate clade, so distinct from mainland E. thouarsi as to suggest that this is a different species, for which the name E. galapagensis is revived from the older taxonomic literature. Complete lack of shared alleles in three allozyme loci between island and mainland populations support their separate specific status. Eucidaris galapagensis and E. thouarsi are estimated from their COI divergence to have split at about the same time that E. thouarsi and E. tribuloides were being separated by the Isthmus of Panama. Even though currents could easily convey larvae between the eastern Pacific islands and the American mainland, the two species do not appear to have invaded each other's ranges. Conversely, the central Atlantic E. clavata at St. Helena and Ascension is genetically similar to E. tribuloides from the American and African coasts. Populations on these islands are either genetically connected to the coasts of the Atlantic or have been colonized by extant mitochondrial DNA lineages of Eucidaris within the last 200,000 years. Although it is hard to explain how larvae can cross the entire width of the Atlantic within their competent lifetimes, COI sequences of Eucidaris from the west coast of Africa are very similar to those of E. tribuloides from the Caribbean. FST statistics indicate that gene flow between E. metularia from the Indian Ocean and from the western and central Pacific is restricted. Low gene flow is also evident between populations of E. clavata from Ascension and St. Helena. Rates of intraspecific exchange of genes in E. thouarsi, E. galapagensis, and E. tribuloides, on the other hand, are high. The phylogeny of Eucidaris confirms Ernst Mayr's conclusions that major barriers to the dispersal of tropical echinoids have been the wide stretch of deep water between central and eastern Pacific, the cold water off the southwest coast of Africa, and the Isthmus of Panama. The Apodida is an order of littoral to deep-sea, largely infaunal sea cucumbers with about 270 extant species in 32 genera and three families, Synaptidae, Chiridotidae and Myriotrochidae. In this study, I perform the first phylogenetic test of the taxonomic and palaeontological hypotheses about evolutionary relationships within Apodida by using cladistic analyses of 34 morphological characters. I introduce several previously unconsidered synapomorphic characters, examine the relationships between all recognized suprageneric taxonomic groups and assess the assumptions of monophyly for each family. Maximum-parsimony analyses of type species from 14 genera and use of three rooting methods recovered identical topologies at the subordinal level and subfamily level within Synaptidae. Overall, the current higher-level classification of Apodida was well corroborated. Within Synaptidae, the relationships (Synaptinae, (Leptosynaptinae, Rynkatorpinae)) are well supported. The monophyly of Chiridotidae was not supported and appears paraphyletic at the subfamily level. Calibrating the phylogenetic hypothesis of Apodida against the fossil record indicated that most higher-level divergences occurred within the Palaeozoic, unlike that of extant non-holothuroid echinoderms, which radiated in the early Mesozoic. Synaptidae appears to have radiated during the Lower Cretaceous. Alternatively, and if one discounts the considerable ghost lineage duration that this hypothesis requires, they may have radiated during the Eocene. 相似文献

In West Africa, the Gulf of Guinea islands are important nesting places for four sea turtle species. The Green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and the Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) turtles nest on Bioko's southern beaches. The Green, Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles breed on Príncipe and São Tomé. The Leatherback turtle nests, at least, on Annobón. The Leatherback turtle is reported on the four islands for the first time, and the Olive Ridley turtle for Bioko. Bioko is probably the most important island in terms of number of species and nesting individuals; the Green turtle being the most abundant species. However, the nesting places are at present restricted to barely 20 km along the coastline. On Príncipe and São Tomé, the most common species is the Hawksbill turtle. Sea turtle nesting populations are being severely depleted on the four islands. The main causes of cverexploitation are the meat and egg trade on Bioko and the Hawksbill shell-craft trade on São Tomé and Príncipe. 相似文献

Energy metabolism in spermatozoa of the sea urchin Diadema setosum of the order Diadematoida was examined. The spermatozoa contained not only several kinds of phospholipids and cholesterol, but also triglyceride (TG). Glycogen and glucose were present at extremely low levels. Following dilution of dry sperm and incubation in seawater, the TG content decreased rapidly. Other lipids, however, remained at constant levels, except for a slight increase in the level of free fatty acid. High lipase activity was demonstrated in the spermatozoa. 14C-labeled fatty acid was oxidized to 14CO2. Ultrastructural study also showed that lipid globules were present at the bottom of the midpiece. After incubation in seawater, morphological changes in the lipid globules were observed and some vacuoles appeared. Thus, the results obtained strongly suggest that D. setosum spermatozoa obtain energy through oxidation of fatty acid from TG stored in the lipid globules at the midpieces. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Summary Cells from the freshwater spongeEphydatia muelleri were isolated by dissociating hatching gemmules. During the first 24 h the cells reaggregated, but the aggregates progressively
disintegrated again to single cells, among which the spicule-forming sclerocytes were recognized. Such cultures were used
to study spicule (megascleres) formation in vitro. The isolated sclerocytes formed the organic central axial filament onto
which they deposited inorganic silicon. The size of the spicules (200 to 350μm in length) as well as the rate of spicule formation (1 to 10μm/h) under in vitro conditions were similar to the values measured in vivo. Immediately after completion of spicule formation,
or even before, the sclerocyte could start formation of a new spicule; 5% of the cells were in the process of forming two
spicules simultaneously. Cultivation of sclerocytes in the absence of silicon resulted in the formation of the axial filament
only. We succeeded in maintaining the sclerocytes in a proliferating and spicule-forming state for up to 3 mo. These results
demonstrate that the establishment of short-term cell cultures fromE. muelleri is possible; however, future studies must be undertaken to identify the growth factors required for a permanent culture of

Atlantic salmon salmo salar smolts of wild, hybrid and farmed parentage were individually tagged then reared in a sea cage for 8 months. The fish were sampled three times during this period. On all occasions, farmed Atlantic salmon displayed the highest abundance and density of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis , whilst no significant differences were observed between hybrid and wild Atlantic salmon. Percentage variation between the lowest and highest infected groups was as high as 175 and 144% for L. salmonis abundance and density respectively (sample 2). The temporal stability of interindividual sea lice infection levels was investigated pair‐wise between samples using correlation (sample 1 v . 2, 1 v . 3 and 2 v . 3). When calculated using sea louse abundance, correlations ranged from r 2 = 0·11, P < 0·01 to r 2 = 0·39, P < 0·001, but, when the effects of fish size were controlled for by converting abundance to density, all correlations were < r 2 = 0·1. Therefore, these data indicate that a fish's relative infection level in one sample was a weak predictor of its relative infection level in another sample. This suggests that identification of individual Atlantic salmon that display reduced susceptibility to sea lice, may be problematic. 相似文献
