Adult female sea otters ( Enhydra lutris ) were instrumented with implanted radio-transmitters in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska, and survival rates were estimated for their dependent pups. Overall, 94 of 141 (67%) of the pups studied survived to a minimum age of 120 d and were assumed to have successfully weaned. Survival of pups in six cohorts ranged from 53% to 88%. The mean interval between successive visual observations was 12.5 d. For these calculations, the assumption was made that pups were successfully weaned if they accompanied mothers for at least 120 d. Estimated survival rates were different when this assumption was changed to either 90 d or 150 d (73% and 52%, respectively).
Females were palpated for pregnancy when instrumented. Of 19 believed to be pregnant, 17 were subsequently seen with young pups giving a detection rate for births of 89.5%. When the above observed survival rate of pups was adjusted for undetected births, the estimated overall survival rate for the study population was 60% (120 d minimum dependency).
Survival rates of pups in PWS and a population at Kodiak Archipelago (KOD) (Monson and DeGange 1995) were compared with that of pups in the population in California (CA, four studies). These data did not support the hypothesis that survival rates were lower in California (CA: 103/160, Psurv. 0.64; PWS: 94/141, Psurv. = 0.67; KOD: 19/23, Psurv. = 0.83; pairwise comparisons, X2, P > 0.05). Comparison of pup survival rates among studies was hindered by small sample sizes, methodological differences, and lack of detail about assumptions underlying estimates.  相似文献

Stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes are used frequently to describe the trophic ecology of top marine mammal predators. Australian sea lions (Neophoca cinerea) are one of the world's rarest otariid seals and exhibit the highest levels of natal site philopatry of any seal. We report the development of a screening technique to identify different foraging ecotypes and assess their relative frequencies in Australian sea lion breeding colonies using stable isotope ratios in pups. Geospatial and dive data from 15 adult females at three breeding colonies revealed alternate foraging strategies (inshore and offshore foraging) that were reflected in significant changes in δ13C and δ15N. Isotope fractionation from mother to pup was validated using paired whisker and blood serum samples with no significant difference between δ13C and δ15N enrichment of +1.27‰ (whiskers) and +1.92‰ (blood serum) from mothers to pups. Isotope ratios from whisker samples representing over 50% of pups born at three colonies revealed significant intercolony differences in maternal foraging ecotype frequencies. These results are unique in that ecological partitioning over such a small spatial scale has not been described in any other otariid species.  相似文献

At four temperatures ( T= 15, 20, 25 and 28° C) swimming performance of Dicentrarchus labrax was significantly correlated with total length (23–43 mm L T); r2=0.623–0.829). The relative critical swimming speed ( RU crit= U crit L T−1), where U crit is the critical swimming speed, was constant throughout the L T range studied. The significant effect of temperature on the relative critical swimming speed was described binomially: RU crit=−0.0323T2+ 1.578 T −10.588 (r2=1). The estimated maximum RU crit (8.69 L T s−1) was achieved at 24.4° C, and the 90% performance level was estimated between 19.3 and 29.6° C.  相似文献

Two key factors influence the diving and hence foraging ability of marine mammals: increased oxygen stores prolong aerobic metabolism and decreased metabolism slows rate of fuel consumption. In young animals, foraging ability may be physiologically limited due to low total body oxygen stores and high mass specific metabolic rates. To examine the development of dive physiology in Steller sea lions, total body oxygen stores were measured in animals from 1 to 29 months of age and used to estimate aerobic dive limit (ADL). Blood oxygen stores were determined by measuring hematocrit, hemoglobin, and plasma volume, while muscle oxygen stores were determined by measuring myoglobin concentration and total muscle mass. Around 2 years of age, juveniles attained mass specific total body oxygen stores that were similar to those of adult females; however, their estimated ADL remained less than that of adults, most likely due to their smaller size and higher mass specific metabolic rates. These findings indicate that juvenile Steller sea lion oxygen stores remain immature for more than a year, and therefore may constrain dive behavior during the transition to nutritional independence.  相似文献

The effect of 1,3;1,6-beta-D-glucooligo- and polysaccharides with different structures (from 1 to 10 kDa of molecular mass; from 10-25% of beta-1,6-linked glucose residues content) on the developing embryos of sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus intermedius, was evaluated for the screening of potential positive stimulants. 1,3;1,6-beta-D-glucans with a molecular mass of between 6-10 kDa and at concentrations of 0.05-0.25 mg/ml shown the best modulator effect on the sea urchin embryos. 1,3;1,6-beta-D-glucans increased the survival of the sea urchin embryos up to 2.5-fold compared with the control animals.  相似文献

Global climate change is predicted to have major negative impacts on biodiversity, particularly if important habitat-modifying species undergo range shifts. The sea urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii (Diadematidae) has recently undergone poleward range expansion to relatively cool, macroalgal dominated rocky reefs of eastern Tasmania (southeast Australia). As in its historic environment, C. rodgersii in the extended range is now found in association with a simplified 'barrens' habitat grazed free of macroalgae. The new and important role of this habitat-modifier on reef structure and associated biodiversity was clearly demonstrated by completely removing C. rodgersii from incipient barrens patches at an eastern Tasmanian site and monitoring the macroalgal response relative to unmanipulated barrens patches. In barrens patches from which C. rodgersii was removed, there was a rapid proliferation of canopy-forming macroalgae (Ecklonia radiata and Phyllospora comosa), and within 24 months the algal community structure had converged with that of adjacent macroalgal beds where C. rodgersii grazing was absent. A notable scarcity of limpets on C. rodgersii barrens in eastern Tasmania (relative to the historic range) likely promotes rapid macroalgal recovery upon removal of the sea urchin. In the recovered macroalgal habitat, faunal composition redeveloped similar to that from adjacent intact macroalgal beds in terms of total numbers of taxa, total individuals and Shannon diversity. In contrast, the faunal community of the barrens habitat is overwhelmingly impoverished. Of 296 individual floral/faunal taxa recorded, only 72 were present within incipient barrens, 253 were present in the recovered patches, and 221 were present within intact macroalgal beds. Grazing activity of C. rodgersii results in an estimated minimum net loss of approximately 150 taxa typically associated with Tasmanian macroalgal beds in this region. Such a disproportionate effect by a single range-expanding species demonstrates that climate change may lead to unexpectedly large impacts on marine biodiversity as key habitat-modifying species undergo range modification.  相似文献

A subclass of proteins with the SEA (sea urchin sperm protein, enterokinase, and agrin) domain fold exists as heterodimers generated by autoproteolytic cleavage within a characteristic G− 1S+ 1VVV sequence. Autoproteolysis occurs by a nucleophilic attack of the serine hydroxyl on the vicinal glycine carbonyl followed by an N → O acyl shift and hydrolysis of the resulting ester. The reaction has been suggested to be accelerated by the straining of the scissile peptide bond upon protein folding. In an accompanying article, we report the mechanism; in this article, we provide further key evidence and account for the energetics of coupled protein folding and autoproteolysis. Cleavage of the GPR116 domain and that of the MUC1 SEA domain occur with half-life (t½) values of 12 and 18 min, respectively, with lowering of the free energy of the activation barrier by ∼ 10 kcal mol− 1 compared with uncatalyzed hydrolysis. The free energies of unfolding of the GPR116 and MUC1 SEA domains were measured to ∼ 11 and ∼ 15 kcal mol− 1, respectively, but ∼ 7 kcal mol− 1 of conformational energy is partitioned as strain over the scissile peptide bond in the precursor to catalyze autoproteolysis by substrate destabilization. A straining energy of ∼ 7 kcal mol− 1 was measured by using both a pre-equilibrium model to analyze stability and cleavage kinetics data obtained with the GPR116 SEA domain destabilized by core mutations or urea addition, as well as the difference in thermodynamic stabilities of the MUC1 SEA precursor mutant S1098A (with a G− 1A+ 1VVV motif) and the wild-type protein. The results imply that cleavage by N → O acyl shift alone would proceed with a t½ of ∼ 2.3 years, which is too slow to be biochemically effective. A subsequent review of structural data on other self-cleaving proteins suggests that conformational strain of the scissile peptide bond may be a common mechanism of autoproteolysis.  相似文献

In the last few decades, the frequency of the toxic benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata proliferation has increased in the Mediterranean Sea. These blooms are associated with harmful effects on human health and the environment. The present work provides the first long term study on the spatio-temporal distribution of O. cf. ovata in relation to physical parameters in the Gulf of Gabès coastal waters (south-eastern Mediterranean Sea), as well as its morphological, molecular and physiological features. The strains of O. cf. ovata were identified morphologically by light and epifluorescence microscopy. The morphology and the size range of cultured strains were similar to those described regarding O. cf. ovata isolated from the Mediterranean Sea. The ultrastructural analysis of O. cf. ovata cells using the transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of numerous vesicles (VE) containing spirally coiled fibers (SCFs) connected to the mucus canal (CH). The phylogenetic tree based on the internal transcribed spacer region containing the 5.8S rDNA (ITS-5.8S rDNA) revealed that O. cf. ovata strains were placed into the Mediterranean/Atlantic clade. In addition, O. cf. ovata toxicity was evaluated by the mouse bioassay and a dose level  4 × 104 cells was found to be lethal to mice. The examination of the O. cf. ovata occurrence in the Gulf of Gabès at a large temporal scale (1997–2012) revealed a clear seasonal pattern with dominance from midsummer (July) to late autumn (November). Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between the abundance of O. cf. ovata and salinity, whereas no correlation was found as regards temperature. The occurrence of O. cf. ovata was only detected at salinity above 35 and the highest concentrations were observed at 45. Laboratory experiments confirmed such a result and showed that isolated O. cf. ovata strains had optimal growth at salinity ranging between 35 and 45, with its peak at 40.  相似文献

It is now recognized that the late Telychian and early Gorstian sea level changes are, like many others in the Silurian, of world‐wide extent. The 30–50 m deepening events at these times were between 1 and 2 Ma in duration, so melting continental ice caps appear to be the most probable cause. The faunal changes associated with the two events are respectively very close to the base and the top of the Wenlock Series and thus segregate many of the faunas diagnostic of the Llandovery, Wenlock, and Ludlow series. Permanent extinctions (often followed by radiations) are more prevalent in the graptolites, conodonts, and acritarchs, while benthic faunas are more affected by regional shifts in community distributions. This means that, in the benthos, slowly evolving lineages are the only reliable guides to time. Such phyletic evolution, however, appears to have been unaffected by sea‐level events.  相似文献
