The symptoms of possible phytoplasma infection in introduced and local varieties of papaya were first noted in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur (BCS) during field surveys in 2002–2003. Phytoplasma structures were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in phloem sieve elements in diseased papaya plants, but not in healthy plants. They were rounded structures 400–1600 nm in diameter. This is the first report of the possible association of phytoplasmas with diseased papaya plants in BCS. The use of SEM for the primary detection of disease aetiology is discussed. 相似文献

The surfaces of the egg chorion of nine species of Simpsonichthys , two of Nematolebias and eight other species of rivulids were studied with scanning electron microscopy revealing details of ornamentation that were previously undocumented. Surface structures of eggs of Simpsonichthys of the subgenus Ophthalmolebias are described for the first time: eggs of Simpsonichthys constanciae , Simpsonichthys perpendicularis , Simpsonichthys rosaceus and Simpsonichthys suzarti are ornamented with a very characteristic palm-like structure, that is restricted to these species among the rivulids examined. The surface of the egg chorion of Simpsonichthys bokermanni lacks the well-developed palm-like structure, but has a characteristic conical projection, distinct from the structures of other rivulids examined, that is proposed as homologous to the palm-like structure. Simpsonichthys bokermanni shares with Nematolebias papilliferus and Nematolebias whitei the presence of concentric rows of spiny projections around the micropylar region. Species of Simpsonichthys of the subgenus Ophthalmolebias , Simpsonichthys myersi (of the subgenus Xenurolebias ), and N. whitei share the presence of large rounded protuberances on the surface of the egg chorion. The phylogenetic significance of these features are evaluated and discussed in light of current knowledge about rivulid relationships. 相似文献

Suberin lamellae in the hypodermis of maize (Zea mays) roots; development and factors affecting the permeability of hypodermal layers 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
Abstract The development of suberin lamellae in the hypodermis of Zea mays cv. LG 11 was observed by electron microscopy and the presence of suberin inferred from autoliuorescence and by Sudan black B staining in nodal (adventitious) and primary (seminal) root axes. Suberin lamellae were evident at a distance of 30–50 mm from the tip of roots growing at 20°C and became more prominent with distance from the tip. Both oxygen deficiency and growth at 13°C produced shorter roots in which the hypodermis was suberized closer to the root tip. There were no suberin lamellae in epidermal cells or cortical collenchyma adjacent to the hypodermis. Plasmodesmata were not occluded by the suberin lamellae: there were twice as many of them in the inner tangential hypodermal wall (1,14 μn?2) as in the junction between the epidermis and hypodermis (0.54 μm?2). Water uptake by seminal axes (measured by micropotometry) was greater at distances more than 100 mm from the root lip than in the apical zone where the hypodermis was unsuberized. In the more mature zones of roots grown at 13°C rates of water uptake were greater than in roots grown at 20°C even though hypodermal suberization was more marked. Sleeves of epidermal/hypodermal cells (plus some accessory collenchyma) were isolated from the basal 60 mm of nodal axes by enzymatic digestion (drisclase). The roots were either kept totally immersed in culture solution or had the basal 50 mm exposed to moist air above the solution surface. In both treatments the permeabilities to tritiated water and 86Rb were low (circa 10?5mms?1) in sleeves isolated from the extreme base. In roots grown totally immersed, however, the permeability of sleeves increased 10 to 50-fold over a distance of 40 mm. In roots exposed to moist air the permeability remained at a low level until the point where the root entered the culture solution and then increased rapidly (> 50-fold in a distance of 8 mm). Growth of roots in oxygen depleted (5% O2) solutions promoted the development of extensive cortical aerenchymas. These developments were not associated with any reduction in permeability of sleeves isolated from the basal 40 mm of the axis. It was concluded that the presence of suberin lamellae in hypodermal walls does not necessarily indicate low permeability of cells or tissues to water or solutes. Ammineruthenium(III) complexes have been found to act as electron acceptors for the transplasmalemma electron transport system of animal cells. The active complexes hexaammineruthenium(III), pyridine pentaammineruthenium(III), and chloropentaammineruthenium(III) range in redox potential (E
0) from 305 to –42 mV. These compounds also act as electron acceptors for the NADH dehydrogenase of isolated plasma membranes. Stimulation of HeLa cell growth, in the absence of calf serum, by these compounds provides evidence that growth stimulation by the transplasma membrane electron transport system is not entirely based on reduction and uptake of iron. 相似文献

Several geological formations of the Utah-Colorado mining region mined for uranium ore during and after World War II had been
mined earlier for vanadium. Therefore, most miners and millers from that region were exposed to those metals’ ores or tailings
at one time or another. Preliminary investigation to determine uranium and vanadium retained in the lungs of a former uranium
miner and miller from this region, who died of lung cancer (mesothelioma), showed a high nonuniform distribution of vanadium.
This observation led to the hypothesis that the vanadium content in the lungs could be associated with inhaled particles.
Further examination of spectra of characteristic X-rays obtained by scanning particle-induced X-ray emission (microPIXE) of
an autopsy sample of this lung indicated that vanadium was indeed present in localized sites within the 20-μm spatial resolution
of the proton beam. This work points out that the microPIXE-RBS (Rutherford backscattering) test for vanadium can be used
for site localization of inhaled particles retained in the lungs. Further studies are in progress to: (i) locate uranium-bearing
particles in lung tissues of former uranium miners and millers; and (ii) evaluate the local doses of alpha radiation received

Absorbance changes associated with the oxidation and reduction of cytochrome f belong to the classical observations about the interaction of the two photosystems. A complex induction pattern of cytochrome f oxidation results, if both photosystems are excited simultaneously. This indicates a light-modulated regulation of the photosynthetic electron transport, which we examined for intact biological systems of decreasing complexity. The ferredoxin-NADP+-oxidoreductase (FNR) is suggested to be activated by light and inactivated in the dark. This is pointed out by the kinetics of variable fluorescence and by the influence of different artificial electron acceptors on the cytochrome f kinetics. The photoreduction of NADP+ by carefully prepared thylakoids demonstrates the activation process directly.This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. 相似文献
