Leaf photosynthesis rate of the C4 species Paspalum plicatulum Michx was virtually CO2-saturated at normal atmospheric CO2 concentration but transpiration decreased as CO2 was increased above normal concentrations thereby increasing transpiration efficiency. To test whether this leaf response led growth to be CO2-sensitive when water supply was restricted, plants were grown in sealed pots of soil as miniature swards. Water was supplied either daily to maintain a constant water table, or at three growth restricting levels on a 5-day drying cycle. Plants were either in a cabinet with normal air (340 mol (CO2) mol-1 (air)) or with 250 mol mol-1 enrichment. Harvesting was by several cycles of defoliation.With abundant water supply high CO2 concentration did not cause increased growth, but it did not cause an increase in growth over a wide range of growth-limiting water supplies either. Only when water supply was less than 30–50% of the amount used by the stand with a water-table was there evidence that dry weight growth was enhanced by high CO2. In addition, with successive regrowth, the enhancing effect under a regime of minimal water allocations, became attenuated. Examination of leaf gas exchange, growth and water use data showed that in the long term stomatal conductance responses were of little significance in matching plant water use to low water allocation; regulation of leaf area was the mechanism through which consumption matched supply. Since high CO2 effects operate principally via stomatal conductance in C4 species, we postulate that for this species higher CO2 concentrations expected globally in future will not have much effect on long term growth.  相似文献

Above ground net primary production (NPP), nitrogen (N) allocation, and retranslocation from senescing leaves were measured in 7 sugar-maple dominated sites having annual net N mineralization rates ranging from 26 to 94 kg · ha–1 · yr–1. The following responses were observed: (1) Green sun leaves on richer sites had higher N mass per unit leaf area than sun leaves on poorer sites; (2) Total canopy N varied much less than annual net mineralization, ranging from 81 to 111 kg · ha–1; (3) This was due to the existence of a large and relatively constant pool of N which was retranslocated from senescing leaves for use the following year (54 to 80 kg · ha–1); (4) The percentage of canopy N retranslocated by sugar maple was also relatively constant, but was slightly higher on the richer sites. Percent N in leaf litter did not change across the gradient; (5) Above ground NPP increased linearly in relation to N allocated above ground. Therefore, N use efficiency, expressed as above ground NPP divided by N allocated above ground was constant; (6) N use efficiency expressed as (NPP above ground/total N availability) was a curvilinear function of N availability; and (7) This pattern reflected a decreasing apparent allocation of N below ground with decreasing N availability.  相似文献

Synopsis Laboratory studies were conducted on 15 schools of blackchin shiners, Notropis heterodon, to determine if they altered their structure in response to changing environmental demands. The hypothesis tested was that fish schools should sacrifice a flat, hydrodynamically efficient structure in favour of an unobstructed visual field in the presence of a predator by staggering in the vertical plane. Ten schools were exposed for two weeks to a simple environment with only a current. For the next two-week period a predator was added. Five control schools were exposed to the simple environment for both two-week periods. Six of the ten treated schools increased their staggering in the vertical dimension as predicted while none of the control schools changed. This result was suggestive that hydrodynamic advantages were sacrificed. Respirometer experiments indicated these fish were capable of achieving some hydrodynamic benefits from schooling but these benefits may be a function of fish size.  相似文献

Summary An atmosphere containing 10% CO2 has been generally accepted as optimal for the growth of Syrian hamster embryo cells in a clonal transformation assay. Data presented in this paper show that 10% CO2 may not be the optimum environment for this assay. Using 10 or 20% (analytically measured) CO2 in air (1 atm pressure), hamster embryo cell pools were examined for clonal growth characteristics and transformability using five known carcinogens and a single noncarcinogenic compound. At 10% CO2, only 2 of 11 pools weee transformed by the five carcinogens but not by the noncarcinogen. At 20% CO2, six of seven pools were transformed by the five carcinogens and not by the noncarcinogen. Further, the transformation frequencies were found to be greater in cultures incubated in an atmosphere consisting of 20% CO2 in air. The data also show that 20% CO2 increased the cloning efficiency of these cells. A comparison of the 10 and 20% CO2 data to results reported from other conflicting interlaboratory results with this assay system may be due, in part, to variations of CO2 concentrations. In some instances, the CO2 levels indicated by incubator flow meters vary considerably from analytically determined CO2 values. To prevent these CO2 discrepancies and their resultant effects on transformation and cloning efficiency, methods for monitoring the CO2 environment other than flow meters are recommended. The observation of increased cloning efficiencies and transformation rates strongly suggests that culture incubation at 20% CO2 is a preferred environment for the conduct of this assay.  相似文献

The abundances, biomass, and seasonal succession of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were examined in a man-made, eutrophic lake, Lake Oglethorpe, over a 13 month period. There was an inverse correlation between the abundance of rotifers and crustaceans. Rotifers were most abundant and dominated (>69%) the rotifer-crustacean biomass during summer months (June–September) while crustacean zooplankton dominated during the remainder of the year (>89%). Peak biomasses of crustaceans were observed in the fall (151 µg dry wt l–1 in October) and spring (89.66 µg dry wt l–1 in May). Mean annual biomass levels were 46.99 µg dry wt l–1 for crustaceans and 19.26 µg dry wt l–1 for rotifers. Trichocerca rousseleti, Polyarthra sp., Keratella cochlearis and Kellicottia bostoniensis were the most abundant rotifers in the lake. Diaptomus siciloides and Daphnia parvula were the most abundant crustaceans. Lake Oglethorpe is distinct in having an unusually high abundance of rotifers (range 217–7980 l–1). These high densities can be attributed not only to the eutrophic conditions of the lake but also to the detailed sampling methods employed in this study.The research was supported by National Science Foundation grants DEB 7725354 and DEB 8005582 to Dr. K. In Collembola, pheromones appear to be present in the faecal pellets. Pheromone release after cessation of faeces production points to the digestive tract as a possible site of biosynthesis.During the pre-moulting periods Collembola do not react to pheromones, possibly due to their low activity at that time, whereas the production of the pheromones continues.Starvation periods of up to 14 days diminish pheromone release but do not cause complete cessation. Production per animal seems to decrease at increasing densities.The effect of pheromones on the reproductive efficiency of Collembola is discussed in the context of their physiological and behavioural ecology.  相似文献

Summary A number of unselected potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) clones were grown at two locations (a seed site and a ware site) in three consecutive years. The repeatability of total yield and yield components in the first two clonal years was compared with the same characters recorded in the third clonal year. Selection for yield in the first clonal year was only marginally more effective than a random reduction in number of genotypes, while selection in the second clonal year appeared to be somewhat more effective as judged by performance in the third clonal year. The inefficiency of selection in the first clonal year was ascribed, at least in part, to the inaccuracy of yield assessment as well as the carry-over effect of the mother tubers. Correlations of total yield were higher between different years in the same location than between different locations. Selection under growing conditions suitable for production of seed tubers tended to result in selection of early maturing clones which would not necessarily be optimal for ware growing conditions.  相似文献

A procedure for the culture of Solanum etuberosum mesophyll protoplasts with subsequent shoot regeneration is described. Several factors affected protoplast yield, colony formation, and shoot regeneration from in vitro plants. A protoplast isolation medium with 0.6 M sucrose produced twice the yield as one with 0.3 M sucrose. uowever, a higher concentration of osmoticum was inhibitory to colony development unless it was diluted into a lower osmoticum medium in a bilayer system. A 16 hour light/8 hour dark photoperiod for stock plants allowed twice the protoplast yield compared to plants grown under continuous light but no effect was found on subsequent colony formation or shoot regeneration. The concentrations of four major salts in the protoplast plating medium were critical for a high frequency of colony formation from protoplasts. Levels of 0.25 × or 1 × were considerably better than 4 ×. Fast colony formation, but at a lower efficiency, was obtained with a monolayer plating method. A bilayer plating system allowed a higher efficiency but colonies developed more slowly. For the best treatments, the frequency of colony formation from protoplasts ranged from 2.4 to 3.6 × 10-3 with 37% to 66% of the colonies producing shoots ten weeks after protoplast isolation.Cooperative investigation of the USDA-ARS and the Wisconsin Agric. Synopsis Feeding and growth rates of 1–3 wk old herring larvae from four different stocks were compared in laboratory experiments (8°C). For most of the larval groups, feeding rate was saturated at nauplii (Acartia tonsa, nauplii stages 3–5) densities over 301–1 (5 g d.w. 1–1). Specific growth rate increased asymptotically with nauplii density, and reached about 6% d–1 at densities over 120 nauplii 1–1. The growth rates attained in the laboratory were similar to field measured growth rates of similarly aged herring larvae at comparable food densities. Since food particles were homogenously distributed in the laboratory tanks, patches of dense plankton concentrations are, thus, apparently not necessary for larval growth and survival in the sea. Growth efficiency differed between larval groups, with large sized larvae being the most efficient in transforming ingested matter into growth. The difference probably relates to different sizes rather than to the different geographical origins of the larvae.  相似文献
