The conversion of natural habitats to human land uses often increases local temperatures, creating novel thermal environments for species. The variable responses of ectotherms to habitat conversion, where some species decline while others persist, can partly be explained by variation among species in their thermal niches. However, few studies have examined thermal niche variation within species and across forest‐land use ecotones, information that could provide clues about the capacity of species to adapt to changing temperatures. Here, we quantify individual‐level variation in thermal traits of the tropical poison frog, Oophaga pumilio, in thermally contrasting habitats. Specifically, we examined local environmental temperatures, field body temperatures (Tb), preferred body temperatures (Tpref), critical thermal maxima (CTmax), and thermal safety margins (TSM) of individuals from warm, converted habitats and cool forests. We found that frogs from converted habitats exhibited greater mean Tb and Tpref than those from forests. In contrast, CTmax and TSM did not differ significantly between habitats. However, CTmax did increase moderately with increasing Tb, suggesting that changes in CTmax may be driven by microscale temperature exposure within habitats rather than by mean habitat conditions. Although O. pumilio exhibited moderate divergence in Tpref, CTmax appears to be less labile between habitats, possibly due to the ability of frogs in converted habitats to maintain their Tb below air temperatures that reach or exceed CTmax. Selective pressures on thermal tolerances may increase, however, with the loss of buffering microhabitats and increased frequency of extreme temperatures expected under future habitat degradation and climate warming. In many lineages of algae and land plants, photosynthesis was lost multiple times independently. Comparative analyses of photosynthetic and secondary nonphotosynthetic relatives have revealed the essential functions of plastids, beyond photosynthesis. However, evolutionary triggers and processes that drive the loss of photosynthesis remain unknown. Cryptophytes are microalgae with complex plastids derived from a red alga. They include several secondary nonphotosynthetic species with closely related photosynthetic taxa. In this study, we found that a cryptophyte, Cryptomonas borealis, is in a stage just prior to the loss of photosynthesis. Cryptomonas borealis was mixotrophic, possessed photosynthetic activity, and grew independent of light. The plastid genome of C. borealis had distinct features, including increases of group II introns with mobility, frequent genome rearrangements, incomplete loss of inverted repeats, and abundant small/medium/large-sized structural variants. These features provide insight into the evolutionary process leading to the loss of photosynthesis.  相似文献

The effects of selection on variability at linked sites have an important influence on levels and patterns of within-population variation across the genome. Most theoretical models of these effects have assumed that selection is sufficiently strong that allele frequency changes at the loci concerned are largely deterministic. These models have led to the conclusion that directional selection for selectively favorable mutations, or against recurrent deleterious mutations, reduces nucleotide site diversity at linked neutral sites. Recent work has shown, however, that fixations of weakly selected mutations, accompanied by significant stochastic changes in allele frequencies, can sometimes cause higher diversity at linked sites when compared with the effects of fixations of neutral mutations. This study extends this work by deriving approximate expressions for the mean conditional times to fixation and loss of mutations subject to selection, and analyzing the conditions under which selection increases rather than reduces these times. Simulations are used to examine the relations between diversity at a neutral site and the fixation and loss times of mutations at a linked site that is subject to selection. It is shown that the long-term level of neutral diversity can be increased over the purely neutral value by recurrent fixations and losses of linked, weakly selected dominant or partially dominant favorable mutations, or linked recessive or partially recessive deleterious mutations. The results are used to examine the conditions under which associative overdominance, as opposed to background selection, is likely to operate.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Banding penguins is controversial because bands can alter the survival, reproduction, and behavior of marked individuals. The effects of bands are not consistent among band types and, although stainless steel is thought to be better than other materials, tests of the long‐term impact of bands on tag‐loss rates and the reproduction and survival of individuals are needed. We tested three types of external tags on Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) to measure band effects and tag‐loss rates. In 1993, we double‐tagged 300 penguins with aluminum flipper bands, stainless‐steel flipper bands, or small (2 mm × 10 mm) metal tags attached to foot webbing. We searched for double‐tagged birds for 13 of 15 yrs (1994–2008). Aluminum bands deformed, caused feather wear, injured and killed some penguins, and were lost more often than stainless‐steel bands or web tags. During the first 2 yrs of our study, at least nine penguins lost one aluminum band (N= 71 penguins resighted), but no penguins lost a stainless‐steel band (N= 84) or a web tag (N= 88). During the next 13 yrs, five penguins lost one of their two web tags (N= 89), but none lost a stainless‐steel band (N= 84). Females laid eggs of similar size before they carried a band and in the year following tagging (P= 0.09). The type of tags a female carried did not significantly change egg size (P > 0.22). During the first breeding season after tagging, penguins with aluminum bands had lower reproductive success than penguins with stainless‐steel bands or web‐tags (P= 0.04). The annual survival of females with two stainless‐steel bands was lower (0.79) than that of males with two stainless‐steel bands or males and females with two web‐tags (0.87). Aluminum bands injured Magellanic Penguins, were lost at high rates, and should not be used. Double stainless‐steel bands had no apparent effects on adult male Magellanic Penguins, but reduced survival rates of adult females. A single stainless‐steel band would likely have less impact than two bands, and our results suggest that the impact of a single band would be difficult to measure.  相似文献

In a field trial, done over two seasons, nitrogen and fungicide inputs to winter wheat were varied to obtain a range of yields to study the effects on aphid population development and the aphid-yield loss relationship. In the first year, the maximum density of Metopolophium dirhodum and total aphid index were significantly higher in the plots receiving the largest amount of nitrogen but there were few other consistent effects on aphid population development. In the second year there were no significant effects of either nitrogen or fungicide on aphid population development. Mean yields were high in 1987 and 1988 (7.0 and 8.5 t/ha respectively) with less than a 2 t/ha range in either year. There were no significant effects of aphids on yield in the first year but in the second, aphids caused a significant reduction. Damage per aphid unit did not change with increase in yield. The use of this approach in determining pest-yield loss relationships is discussed.  相似文献

Young female Zucker fa/fa rats of 370-430 g were implanted with osmotic minipumps releasing 3.5 mol/dayúkg of estrone oleate in liposomes (Merlin-2) into the bloodstream for up to 14 days. Merlin-2 induced a sustained loss of appetite, and a decrease in body weight of 3.5%, which contrasts with the 8.2% increase in controls during the period studied. Plasma insulin, glucose and urea decreased, and liver glycogen increased with Merlin-2 treatment. Plasma ACTH and corticosterone increased to a maximum at the end of the experiment. The expression of the ob gene in adipose tissue was unchanged, and plasma leptin levels were also unchanged by treatment. Estrone levels increased more than 1500-fold, and estrone oleate rose 100-fold during treatment. The fact that estrone oleate had no effect on the leptin levels or expression in obese rats, in contrast with the marked inhibition observed in the lean suggests that the functionality of the leptin receptor is essential for estrone oleate inhibition of the ob gene. This also suggests that leptin may control ob gene expression in white adipose tissue and that estrone oleate may activate this process. The slimming effect of estrone oleate is, thus, not directly dependent on leptin, since both normoleptinemic and hyperleptinemic animals lose fat following treatment nor are the effects on appetite and energy expenditure mediated by leptin. However, leptin levels and the expression of the ob gene are directly linked with estrone oleate function. A possible involvement of leptin in estrone oleate action is postulated. The results support the participation of estrone oleate in the control of body weight and hint at the complexity of its regulation by leptin and glucocorticoids.  相似文献

The effects after exposure to two different light intensities (dim, 50 lx and bright, 5000 lx) on thermoregulatory responses during exercise in a climatic chamber (27 degrees C, 60% relative humidity) were studied in nine untrained female subjects, aged 19-22 years. The subjects were in either the dim or bright light intensities from 0600 hours to 1200 hours. They were then instructed to exercise on a cycle ergometer at an intensity of 60% maximal oxygen uptake from 1200 hours to 1300 hours in a light intensity of 500 Ix. The main results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, exercise-induced increases of core temperature were significantly smaller, after exposure to the bright than after the dim light intensities, although both tests were performed in the same light intensity. Secondly, body mass loss after exercise was significantly greater after exposure to the bright light intensity. Thirdly, an increase in salivary lactic acid during exercise was significantly lower after the bright intensity. Fourthly although the salivary melatonin level was not different between the two light intensities both before and after the exercise, it increased significantly during exercise only after the bright intensity. These results are discussed in terms of the establishment of a lower set-point in the core temperature after exposure to a bright light intensity.  相似文献
